Where To Dine Along The Metropolitan Line

"Seafood lovers can revel in quality fish and shellfish here, from premium langoustines and lobster to top‑notch, often Cornish fish presented in dishes like wild turbot with squid ink noodles and monkfish with parmesan gnocchi. Perched atop the South Place hotel, the room has its own bright personality, complete with a mirrored ceiling." - Andrew Young

"Top-drawer fish, treated with the culinary skill it deserves, is the main attraction at this restaurant on the top floor of the South Place Hotel. The chefs have the confidence to know that when seafood is this good, it needs little in the way of adornment, and the pared-back cooking allows exceptional produce like roast Newlyn cod to shine through. Dishes are attractively presented and so is the room, with an ornate ceiling and inviting roof terrace." - Michelin Inspector

Google
Angler, a Michelin star seafood restaurant cervical British cuisine. Elegant decor and ambience. Very simple menu to choose from. We left satisfied but not convinced, with mixed feelings. The dessert, however, was outstanding.

Google
Truly enjoyed the tasting menu. Wonderful in every detail. Generous portion or, in fact, this is setting a good standard that any restaurant needs to give the dish substantial form and food to eat in order to taste and enjoy when providing a multiple course tasting menu. Lobster ravioli was my favourite. Pasta was al dente, and lobster meat inside was full of flavours and textures. The lobster bisque had a Thai style hint to it and some vege at the bottom to balance it out. Lamb main with the lamb sausage was a bit too strong in taste for me, but I liked it for the fact that the tasting menu was an experience to try out the chef's specialities. The pre-dessert was phenomenal and was my second favourite for this menu. Welcome snacks and petit four had shown the chef had put in a lot of effort and creativity to make the meal memorable and fun.

We went À la carte as I wanted to have the Turbot main. The sommelier was fantastic, pairing the wines with the dishes we chose. The plates were presented beautifully and tasted just as good. I thought it was suitably priced.

Google
Tasty food for sure. The eight course menu is great. Ambience and service are ok… Nice for a business dinner.

Google
Absolutely exquisite! 8 course tasting menu was one to remember. It’s also rare to find a Michelin star restaurant in London with such great lighting and a view. 10/10 would recommend.

Google
A 5 star Michelin starred hidden gem in the heart of the City! Excellent service, a relaxed vibe, great menu, food presented beautifully, incredible flavours. I have been to dinner there as a couple and returned as part of a group for a private dining experience. Excellent wine menu.

Google
Best meal we have in London during this trip! We chose to come here because despite their Michelin star, they have choice of "tasting menu" or "a la cart". And we did not regret. Impressed with every dish especially their courtesy appetizers, very interesting and delicious. We would love to come back if we have a chance.

Well thought through and well presented dishes! The place is not too crowded, and luckily relatively quiet. Finally a Michelin experience that one does not need to book weeks in advance.

Yelp
It's always fun to eat at Michelin star restaurants! Angler had great service. They check in your coat for free. The waitstaff are quick to refill waters, remove empty plates/silverware, and clean up breadcrumbs. The food came out quite slowly (the tasting menu was a 2.5-3 hour experience). For me, since the portions are small, the pace at which the dishes arrived could have been quicker. My favorites were the sea bass tartare, the turbot, and the crispy pig's head. The dishes were presented beautifully, especially the Black Forest dessert. Most of the dishes I would rate a 4/5. Since there are so many items on the tasting menu, it's hard to love every single one of them, but the experience was still very enjoyable. Of note, the still water was an extra cost. They also charged an additional fee of 1 pound as a donation to the prostate cancer society.

Yelp
4.5 stars and rounded up. Service 5 stars. Food/drinks 4.5 stars. Ambience 4 stars. Dined end Sept 2019 with a party of three at around 7pm on a Friday evening. Arriving to the location, there is another restaurant on the ground floor, but in noticing the name wasn't correct, I asked for directions and they directed me upstairs via elevator. Upon entering Angler, they check if you have reservations, followed by an optional coat check. My friends had already arrived so the staff promptly ushered me to the table. The atmosphere is contemporary and spacious, with floor to ceiling windows but not especially high ceilings, giving a feel of horizontal breadth. Dining tables are located generously distant from other tables to allow for a feeling of privacy while dining. Attire fell mainly in the business casual-formal range, with many gentlemen sporting jackets. Conversations were subdued and tame, there's a definite formal air in the room. Service was very polished and hospitable. First course of business was drinks, and we each got a different one, enjoying two out of the three--the Ginger Bloody tasting a bit like cough syrup wasn't our favorite, but I thoroughly enjoyed my Purple Garden with rice crisp printed butterfly garnish. Since they require the entire party to do the same tasting menu, we all got the smaller of the two, which was £70 for 6 courses plus snacks prior and petit fours post-meal. The other option was £100 for 8 courses plus snacks and petit fours. The staff inquired about any food allergies and since one of my friends had many allergies, they were very courteous to swap out a couple courses to accommodate her. It's been a while since we went, so I'll just say overall impressions were the starters stood out more than the mains. Everything was executed superbly and presented beautifully; the flavors and inventiveness of the starters just outshined the mains. Being a seafood focused restaurant, glad to see all mediums were cooked perfectly. The desserts were very good, along the lines of traditional flavors presented with a twist of technique. We enjoyed the entire meal and felt quite full afterward. If anything would love to see a bit more variety to the mains, but overall felt quite satisfied with the experience, an A+ for the service.

Yelp
A fine dining experience at the best seafood restaurant in London. The Lemon sole is worth a trip to this restaurant alone. 10/10

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant on top floor of South Place Hotel near The City of London area (generally). Excellent lunch service. The langoustine and crab appetizers are delicious. The cod entree is highly recommended. Service and ambiance are top notch.

Yelp
If you have a very special occasion to celebrate (and appreciate fine dining), this is probably one of the best places in the City in which to do it. I've had the pleasure of dining here around 7 times over the last year, and on each visit I've been impressed by the ambience, service, quality of staff and of course calibre of menu (the execution of which being excellent, too). The sommelier we tend to always have for the evening is excellent - knowledgeable, witty and welcoming. An easy 5/5.

Yelp
Great service, good recommendation of the wine to go with the choice of food. I ordered the three course meal but with the extra snacks, it ended up being more like 4.5 course meal. The food was well balanced and the flavour was great. I really enjoyed the experience. The only downside is that the restaurant was relatively noisy and I felt like I had to shout to make a conversation - maybe our seating location wasn't the best so the acoustics was poor.

Yelp
I think I expected something more special for a 2 Michelin restaurant. It was a nice restaurant but it's nothing special. We got the 3-course menu with champagne. The food was alright, although I did especially enjoy their chocolate profiterole dessert! Also there isn't much of a view despite the lovely windows and interior design

Yelp
Venue - 5 Service - 4 Food - 4 Value - 4 Overall 4 We had the tasting menu. The food overall was good quality, although there wasn't anything unique or extraordinary. I was expecting larger portions of the seafood especially but was underwhelmed. My friend did not enjoy the pre-dessert and they made us a new one specifically which was extremely accommodating of them. Overall, an enjoyable meal in a beautiful ambience.

Yelp
We were at the Angler in a group of 8 people and had a most wonderful experience on that evening. All of us had the "Chef's view" menue, which was dominated by different fish dishes, but the chef was flexible enough to also take care of people with diatery requirements (yes, there was one in the group who is allergic to fish and raw seafood). Lots of little dishes were testing our taste buds. Unexpected combinations of fish with vegetables , little spots of aromatic sauces - all very wonderfully combined to a firework of different tastes. The voting amongst the group finally revealed the favourite dish: rabbit agnolotti and the Early Grey cream dessert. Having had a view into the kitchen we had a glimpse on the crew of chefs preparing all the delicacies we had over the course of the evening. The service was attentive and wonderfully unpretentious, occasionally on the slow side. We enjoyed the relaxed and warm atmosphere in this nicely and modern decorated venue. The price was certainly adeqate for this type of upscale restaurant.

Yelp
The restaurant is in a great location on the top floor of the South Place Hotel, a short walk from Liverpool Street. It looks like a modern, crisp place. The outside deck looks like a cool spot for some drinks with friends. We had a warm welcome from everyone - right from the ground floor until we were lead to our table. The surroundings raised our expectations: the white linen tablecloth and the comfortable booth. We actually came here to have the 3 course set menu, but we changed our minds after browsing the a la carte menu. They have a "Crustacea" section at the start. We ordered two Orkney Island langoustines and two Cherrystone clams. I don't know what I had been expecting, but I was impressed with the display of fresh seafood when it was brought to our table with all of the accompaniments. The langoustines perched on the crushed ice, the lemon wrapped in gauze and the different condiments below. I had no idea how to properly attack my langoustine, but it was fun to try! I pretty much snapped it in half and isolated the tail. I carefully peeled off the shell segments and after a minute of this, I was holding a tasty morsel of langoustine. I squirted some lemon juice over the piece and devoured it. I still had the carnage of ripped-apart crustacean on my plate. But I had reached a dead end for eating it, based on my limited skills. We also ordered the shellfish ravioli with tomato & chive butter and ginger slaw to share for an entree. It was delicious, but you only got one of them. Note to the restaurant: ravioli is the plural of raviolo, you need to update your menu. We both had fish courses for mains as we expected this would be their strength. I had roast halibut with brown shrimps, capers, butter and parsley. The waiter warned me that there would be bones in mine, so I was getting prepared for the careful process I would need to follow with my cutlery. (I even quickly looked up a video online with my mobile!) When the dish came out, however, it was clear that there would be no such hassle. True, there was a big bone down the middle, but this was very easily negotiated. We had sides of chips and cabbage and the whole dish was delicious. My wife had the roast fillet of turbot, which came with red wine braised squid, fennel puree and sea purslane. It was nicely cooked and also tasted good. We each had a dessert: the apricot parfait and the hazelnut cake. They were well presented. Nothing special, but good solid desserts. There was confusion over the bill. It was obvious that they had charged us £30 each for the set menu plus what we had ordered off the a la carte menu. There was no argument when we brought this to their attention and the bill was amended.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of dining at Angler 3 or 4 times in the past 6 months. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the East End and it never disappoints. The menu changes every few weeks. Last night, I had an absolutely amazing meal. The Cornish blue lobster appetizer was presented chilled as a soup with melon, aioli and chilled avocado cream. Accompanying this dish was a lobster spring roll with mint, which was a nice touch. The service is always spot on and I plan to return in a few nights before leaving London!

Yelp
Restaurant in the South Place hotel. Good solid Conran food. Nice fish, and good meat

Yelp
Had dinner there Friday the 16th. 8th floor rooftop restaurant. Very attentive staff. Well prepared food and tasty. The wait was a bit long for the courses. Price is modestly expensive but there is a less costly set menu I'll have to try. Michelin Star? Reservations make sense. Terrace is very nice for afternoon coffee/cocktails if the weather is good.

Yelp
Very good tasting menus . I had Christmas special and a bit of warning don't get this tasting menu if you are in a rush. The courses overall is about 3 hours. Great wine selection. Always a good few bars in southplace hotel after dinner too.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of staying at the South Place Hotel on one of my recent trips to London and had a business dinner at Angler. Located on the top floor of the hotel, the restaurant is frequented mostly by hotel guests and their business guests but Angler doesn't feel like your typical hotel restaurant. Well known for its locally sourced ingredients and clever twists on traditional European fare, Angler holds its own in the London restaurant scene. The wine list was unexpectedly extensive, especially with mid-range French selections. We went with a 2010 Saint Emilion and were not disappointed. I had the Dover sole with vegetables and it was the perfect first meal after a long flight in from the States. Very light but full of flavor- the sole itself was flaky and doused in just enough sauce to give it some extra oomph. My colleagues joined me in ordering the sole and others got the lamb, which judging from their clean plates was delicious as well. Angler was a nice venue for a convenient business dinner and I would suggest it to clients in the future. I think there are more "adventurous" and "hip" restaurants in London but the quality of food and service at Angler is high in every regard.

Yelp
This place is beautiful and the food is fantastic. The roof deck is fantastic for a drink while you are waiting for seating. Had a large party and everything was perfect.

Yelp
Excellent food - was a nice surprise to discover this in the area since good restaurants are somewhat lacking near Liverpool St. I had the set menu for lunch - crab, apple and celeriac salad starter with a pork loin main. Both were delicious. Great place for business lunches but would definitely go back on my own time.
