The Best Wineries and Wine Tastings in the Columbia River Gorge | Eater Portland

"This renovated barn-turned-winery is a stunning place to taste wine, with a jaw-dropping view of the Columbia River Gorge from its casual outdoor tables. Wines here are fun and approachable, but nowhere near simple or sophomoric: the Baba Yaga features Yakima Valley grenache for a vibrant white, while the Peaseblossom blends dolcetto, chardonnay, and pinot noir for a fruity glass of bubbles on a summer day. AniChe is kid- and dog-friendly and open for walk-ins or reservations." - Molly Allen

Very cute winery with a great view of Columbia River. Staff were super friendly and helpful. The wine itself was a bit light bodied to our taste but we really enjoyed the view and the atmosphere here. Very relaxing and chilled.

Google
Absolutely the best wine tasting experience!! I went in the fall of 2022 and it was spectacular!! The view was amazing , you can see across to Hood River. I still think about this wine and day! 🍷🫶🏻

Google
This winery is wonderful! Queer friendly and amazing wine. The staff is friendly and helpful. The indoor decor is a bit cringe though with limited indoor seating. There is a nice outdoor seating area for the colder months. The outdoor seating could use a bit of renovating to make the experience even better. Overall, I will 100% be returning and ordering more wine from them online!

It was an excellent vineyard for a glass of wine 🍷after a day of windsurfing. The host was really lovely, and the views and atmosphere were fantastic. It was a little off the beaten path, but I really enjoyed the late afternoon. Would recommend a visit if you get the opportunity.

Google
As others have said, cozy, so much to see, very friendly and personable owners, and the wine tasting was great - all were delicious! They served a little plate of cheese and sausage with the tasting. We ordered the dolmas which were the best I've had.

Google
Setting is beautiful with views of the Columbia river. There are nice tasting areas outdoors or inside. Very cute inside, looks artsy with a little typewriter museum. However the wines are not great. Didn’t buy any. Gift shop is heavy on Tarot cards and psychic tea reading manuals. Signs says they are a company of misfits. Can anyone really be a misfit in the greater portland area? I don’t care how quirky a person is (whether that’s good or bad) if the wine isn’t good.

We loved our snowy winter visit! The service was great even though they were juggling a lot of customers, and we loved snuggling up under a blanket and doing our tasting while looking out over the snowy mountains. Delicious wines, beautiful cat, great vibes. Really appreciated the welcoming environment for queer people.

This was the cutest find we had today!! Such great wine and an absolutely beautiful area!! Atmosphere 12/10!! Joseline was sooo friendly, sweet, and knowledgeable! She made us enjoy our time there so much!

Yelp
Beautiful view of the Columbia River, friendly, great service, delicious wines, and tasty bites to pair with the wines! AniChe is great for a wine-tasting day trip.

Yelp
I like the seafina white wine and the Malbec! Bought them. Others was so so. Your tasting comes with a mini charcuterie plate which was lovely. Good espmanarion. It's very inclusive environment.

Yelp
We also stopped at Aniche Winery that has stunning views of the river, and a unique, quirky vibe. It's up on the hills of Washington's Columbia River Gorge. Inside, the decor is an eclectic mix of vintage flair, with old typewriters and other antiques scattered throughout the space.

Yelp
Always great wine and service. We love the property and the view. It's always relaxed and approachable. I love a winery that makes everyone feel welcomed and appreciated.

Yelp
Cute little winery on the Washington side. A good variety of wines from the flight and complimentary snacks pairing. The view is great which is a huge plus. Everyone working there was super friendly.

Yelp
Between the wine and the fun factor ( especially for member parties) it doesn't get any better than Aniche.

Yelp
Great views, the snacks were good, but the wine was bad. The flights are $25 per person and the amount of wine was so small it was BARELY a taste. I also didn't enjoy any of the wine. It tasted pretty off and you could taste the alcohol more than the wine. Most of it was pretty astringent. Over all I'd say it wasn't a great value but the views are pretty beautiful so there is that. And the dog there is sweet and friendly so one star for that as well.

Yelp
Perched on a hill overlooking vineyards and the magnificent Columbia River, spending time at AniChe is a must for anyone visiting this area. It's not just wine tasting, it's an experience! The barn with bright red doors is the inside tasting room with lots of intimate Seating areas, party lights, and unique decor. While it's quaint and quirky, the real star is the outdoor seating, and if you are lucky, the gazebo looking out over the river. Buteven the side patio, or Adirondack chairs in front of the barn, and various intimate seating areas sprinkled throughout the grounds are wonderful. So relaxing and peaceful. Now to the wine. It's very different from any wine I have had before; they do blends combining grapes that typically are not put together. For example, the Puck 2020 combines Albariño and tempranillo. For me, they didn't work. The tasting had five wines and the only one that I would order a glass of is the Three Witches, a red blend of French grapes: Mourvèdre, Counoise and Cinsault. Along with the flight, they provided a little tasting dish consisting of a slice of cheese, some dried cranberries and white and dark chocolate. Nice touch. Service is warm and welcoming. And the vineyard dogs add to the charm! I'll definitely be back and will bring friends to relax in the heavenly space they created, sipping a glass of Three Witches. While the wine didn't appeal to my taste buds, I can't deduct a star for that. Wine is very personal so it is not their fault it didn't work for my palette. Everything about the vineyard and experience was wonderful. If you are wine tasting on the Washington side, make reservations and stop here. Or make it your destination.

Yelp
Beautiful views and beautiful people. The wine was also quite nice. Worth the drive. Watch closely for the entry drive. The sign was kind of hidden.

Yelp
My friend and I had such a great time. I can't stop talking about it and recommending it to others. I'll be back for sure! We went on a cold and rainy day so I can't wait to experience it in the summer. The staff was very friendly and the wines were very good.

Yelp
This little winery has it all. Views, a laid back casual vibe and amazing wines. The interior is quirky, the garden is lovely & the staff are super knowledgeable & kind. Can't wait to go back!!!

Yelp
Nice, somewhat eclectic winery with great views and outdoor seating that takes advantage of that. Nice place to enjoy a bottle of their wine and some food pairings.

Yelp
Could've sworn I'd reviewed AniChe before, but apparently not. Sorry to have delayed my recommendation for this terrific spot. We live far enough away that it's impractical for us to be wine club members, but any time we're visiting the Gorge, we make it a point to visit. The location is stunning - with the production facility and the outdoor seating looking east down the river below. Couple this with a glass of wine and you have a wonderful place to spend part of an afternoon and to pick up a few bottles to take home. We are primarily red wine drinkers, but in my opinion, the standout here is a white Albariño variety. It's mostly found in Northwest Spain, but was a pleasant surprise to find it being made locally. Unless you cross the river near Portland, there are toll bridges involved in visiting AniChe, but a few bucks extra is well worth it for good wine and glorious views. FYI - if you crossed the river from the city of Hood River, and are headed back towards Portland, taking Rt 14 along the Washington side of the river and either crossing back at the Bridge Of The Gods, or going all the way to I 205 is a great drive.

Yelp
I am in love! This place is so warm, welcoming, and both my partner and I felt extremely comfortable enjoying a super positive wine tasting experience.

Yelp
Absolutely exceptional wines! AniChe Cellars specializes in blends. We opened the 2015 Goat Boy yesterday. It's a blend of Cab, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. It was spectacular! The best wine I've had in recent memory. We recently enjoyed the less expensive 2017 Inferno made from that year's "smoke kissed" harvest. It was VERY good. I look forward to trying the other four bottles I had shipped to my home. I haven't had the pleasure of visiting the Winery; I live in another state. Wanting to support small businesses during the pandemic, and having met the owner MANY years ago, I decided to take a flyer and chose six bottles of wine, untasted. I'm glad I did. The wines are exceptionally good. BRAVA!
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
Driving around the area (thankfully I wasn't driving), we stopped here for some beautiful scenery, a few hula hoop attempts (not pretty), and shared a bottle of nice red. Nice bathroom too! If they give tastes, it wasn't obvious. We just bought a bottle and shared it.
google avatar

Naty M.

Yelp
Ii came here with my girlfriend. She lives out here and I just came because she recommended it. I'm going to be honest I am not a wine person so I can't say anything about the wines because I don't know anything g about them. But what I can tell you it that the view is beautiful and the host is so welcoming. I had a relaxing fine and it was very peaceful. Before dealing we did some hula hu and that was fun.

Yelp
One of my all-time favorite wineries in The Gorge. The wine is divine, views are spectacular, vibe is just right and the charcuterie boards are delicious.

Brian L.

Yelp
Great visit as always! The people, wine, and charcuterie board were wonderful. Our server/ attendant/ information officer, Kelly, was over the top. Excellent information and conversation. We joined the wine club a couple of years ago even though it's several hours away because we loved the wine and location, hoping to attend some of the events. While we haven't made that happen yet, we still keep it on our radar.

Yelp
We came toward the end of the day on a Thursday; the tasting room was relatively open. The view of the gorge from the outside patio is incredible. Women-owned and managed. Be aware the Hood River bridge toll is $2 each way (not one way like the Bridge of the Gods). The wines are creative blends and varietals that I wouldn't normally have an opportunity to try. What will bring me back however, is the unique experience that they pair each taste with a small bite of food. Really brilliant concept, and one I wish more wineries would consider. You can also order more food of course, but having a small bite included in the tasting fee was well worth it for me.

Kent R.

Yelp
Tasting was excellent with good service snd nice ambiance. Also very convenient from Hood River snd surrounding area.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
This is my girlfriend's favorite winery and now it's mine. The family that owns and runs it are amazing. They share so many crazy fun interesting bits of information. About wine, food, literature and the lists goes on creates and environment of relaxed conversation. The wine is mostly blends in Italian and Spanish styles. I love the reds. Nothing like grabbing a glass and relaxing with a view down the gorge or grabbing the hula hoop and raising your heartbeat.
google avatar

Corrie H.

Yelp
So, how have I not written a review of this place? I mean, seriously! AniChe is my favorite tasting room ever. Oh, that's why. I don't want to share it. It's too pretty, too unpretentious and awesome, too delicious, and far too tiny for there to be room for you there. So, do me a favor, and don't go. You don't want to sit on an Adirondack chair, looking out over a beautiful gorge view, drinking wine on your birthday. You really don't. It would suck for you. 'kay?

Regina B.

Yelp
What a gorgeous evening at Aniche. Our server, Jocelyn, was an absolute delight. We had a few small children with us and she knew just what to do. Providing us with bubbles, chalk and laughter. Diego and Umi (the wine dogs) also made for great cuddle buddies. The wines were delicious and the view fantastic! Thanks for a wonderful time!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful spot overlooking the mountains. Patio seating surrounded by luscious garden with a under flowers - bee picturesque. Good prices, we had a flight for $10 which comes with 6 tastings (3 white and 3 red) and a little food sampling plate to go with it. Love that it is women run and supports local artists inside their shop.

Yelp
So one word of warning to any future out-of-towners like us: this winery is actually 4 dollars more expensive than it appears if you're coming from Portland, because the only way in and out is a toll bridge that charges 2 dollars each way. Just thought I'd make that clear, because I totally missed that until I got there, and at that point I was committed. Not that the winery gets those extra 4 dollars, but it's still the same price to you... I also figured I'd check out a couple other wineries in the area while I was here that I saw on google maps, but one of them was only open Friday through Sunday, and the other was only open "by appointment", so it was just this one and then back over the stupid toll bridge. My verdict: still totally worth it (though obviously ideally you'd get more value by popping over the bridge when other wineries were also open). I had heard that the view from this winery was excellent, and that was not wrong. Sadly, the view from right where tastings are done is basically "the side of a barn", but happily, take your wine glass and walk like 10 feet with it out of their tasting room, and boom, gorgeous river vista from a perfect vantage (and also a gorgeous view of the bridge, complete with reminder of how you paid 4 more unexpected dollars to get here :p. It is a pretty great view of the bridge, though.) Without that view I dunno if I'd say it was worth the extra bridge charge, but it would still certainly have been worth the $10 that goes to the winery itself. First off, it was gloriously laid-back and anti-pretentious, it really felt like you were tasting wine right in the winery (which you are! There are wines aging right in front of you in barrels, or in a couple cases, literal jugs! Super neat!) Secondly, of the 6-that-turned-into-7 wines we got to taste, we agreed that the 2 whites we tried were kind of flabby, but that all 5 of their reds more than made up for it in being exactly the opposite of that - really big bold reds with a lot going on, perfectly balanced tannins and just generally a lot of fun. Thirdly, yes, you totally get a free pairing of little bits of cheese, salami, chocolate and fig bits. Tiny bits, obviously, not even enough to be a snack, but that's not the point, the point is it's more fun tasting wine when you have all the right things to pair with it, and they provide that for you, which is a really nice touch. Was all pretty high quality, too. Finally, and I know this is not as important as everything else, but they have this one medium sized white dog roaming around, that *really* wants all the attention, and will prance about hilariously until he gets it. So that was also fun to watch.

Yelp
We had a nice visit last Saturday. We came early and were able to get a seat. We were served quickly and the wine came at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow. We got the information we needed. This place blends their wine. They make good choices. Their prices are very fair. We came here five years ago thought the wine alright. They are now very good. We purchased the Three Witches. It is a great wine for the price, smooth on the palate and full in the mouth. Great flavor. We like all of their reds and place to return. This is a good spot. I like the idea they blend their grapes. We will come back.
google avatar

Abraham A.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal service. Staff was super kind, accommodating and hospitable. The reservation strategy leaves you feeling comfortable and the grounds are not crowded. We couldn't stay as long as we wanted, but we will absolutely be back next time we're in the area. Check them out!
google avatar

Tamera K.

Yelp
The views from the outdoor seating area are breathtaking! We received our first pour inside but they brought the rest to us where we were snuggled under a wool blanket enjoying the views and sunshine. Wines were tasty and paired well with the food samples they provided. Worth the drive and the tolls if you're staying in Hood River!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Joined my first wine club here, half way through my tasting! Have been back multiple times. Great place to hang out for a leisurely taste with views of the River. Staff is always knowledgeable and friendly and I love the small bite with every taste. Their release parties are great and I love getting my wine shipment quarterly.

B H.

Yelp
Love the location and their wines are great. They also have a great variety of wine with different taste profiles to try.

Yelp
A must stop on the tour of Gorge Wineries! It was Valentine's Day and there was a special event happening - lots of little sweet treats to pair with the fabulous wines! We really enjoyed the view and the eclectic ambiance of the winery. The reds were really good. Especially the Moth and Three Witches. We will definitely be back on future wine tours of the Gorge.

Yelp
A drizzly early February Sunday drive takes us an hour outside of traffic burdened Portland. A $2.00 toll bridge and a change of states brings us to a classic Volvo, marked with a simple sign reading, "Winery" in a hand painted font, marking the turnout to AniChe Winery. We ignore the gps as soon as we spot the yurt atop a moderately graded gravel driveway. Unlike the pretentious, grandiose hilltop mansion wineries that adorn the Willamette Valley to the south, AniChe evokes memories of childhood visits to the fun aunt's, Pacific Northwest rainforest home. An aged white dog, unfazed by it's soggy fur, greets us as we saunter up to the barn doors of the tasting room/barrel cellar. An unconventional surprise for a winery to pour the reds right next to the barrels they inhabited two years prior. We let the wild rumpus start as we look at Maurice Sendak inspired paintings through our glasses of 2016 Bombadil white. The contents of our glasses graduate from a light shade of oak, to a deep rich garnet color. The barrels stained slightly from the overspill of young merlot grape juice on its journey to become one of the prominent flavors in their BeHolden red. This all female driven winery has proven year after year that they know the grapes, region, and art of blending the flavors of the humble grape into a world class wine. No other winery in the Columbia River Valley produces the quality of wines that AniChe does. A winery should anyways be centered around the wine it produces, not a twenty thousand square foot tasting facility with an exit through the gift shop. AniChe would make the wine makers of Bordeaux and Rhône proud, and the share holders of the Napa mega vineyards scared. Bravo AniChe, bravo.

Yelp
I really must have missed the memo on this one. The only thing this winery had going for it in my opinion was the view. I felt like the sommelier didn't explain to us what was going on. Maybe she assumed we already knew? She brought us a plate of what appeared to us as snacks which we gobbled down. Then as it turns out those were for tasting with the wine, and when they brought another wine to taste they began with saying "this wine goes well with such-and-such item IF you still have it on your plate" which to me was rather rude. Maybe if we knew that beforehand the wines would have tasted better. Maybe it was just the whole experience that led to me not liking any their wines. We left this place without a single bottle. Parking is also confusing and difficult for a first-timer, but apparently they have an unmarked parking area up on top of the hill by their building. Better signage would have been nice. If we ever return I guess now we know the ins-and-outs of this place and might have a better experience, but I'm not sure when or if that will ever happen.

Yelp
I was in Portland on a sat and was heading out to the Columbia Gorge AVA to check out some wineries. So I decided to call a few to make sure that they were open since it was in Feb and a lot of wine makers take their vacations in the low season. I first spoke to Rachael of Aniche cellars. She politely told me that they were closed but gave me some recommendations on other places to go that fit my taste in wines. We chatted for a while and I mentioned that I do wine education part time at home in Chicago. Then she relented and told me that I was welcome to stop by and try a few of their wines that were already open as she'd be working in the cellar anyway. I accepted her kind offer and was on my way. I took US 84 which follows the Columbia river which was a wonderful drive. Then I crossed the bridge over the Columbia at Hood River, OR which was an awesome crossing. I was using a Garmin navigation system and it had me going up Hwy 141 alternative on the east side of the White Salmon River. I got lost, but what a wonderful area to get lost in. I eventually stopped by a home and a very friendly old couple explained how to get to the winery on the west side of the river. They told me about the blowing up of the 100yr old dam in order to let the salmon run up stream. Rather controversial. But I digress. I finally found the winery and Rachael with two other tasters. I tasted two reds and two white. I bought the two whites, an Alberino and a Marsanne/Rousanne mix. I also got to try a barrel sample of their Sangiovese rose which was very nice but not for sale at the time. I brought the Marsanne/Rousanne mix to a blind tasting and people really liked it. It was great to talk to Rachael about her wine making philosophy. I learned a lot. If I ever get back to the area, I'm stopping by again for sure.

Yelp
Wonderful wines, great service. Looking forward to visiting again in Spring/Summer for the amazing view!

Michelle S.

Yelp
this was one of the most amazing wineries I have ever been to. The view is spectacular and the wine is very good! The tasting was nice because they pair each pour with a piece of food (fig, salami, chocolate). This is a woman run winery and I love what these ladies are doing. If you are in the hood river / Columbia gorge make sure you check it out!!

Yelp
We stumbled onto this winery as we were looking for a place to picnic with a bottle of wine and Syncline was closed (we were there on a Wednesday). AniChe was open so we figured what the heck, we'll give it a try. I was a little hesitant as their web-site said they had a lot of different varietals and their wine went well with food. Two red flags for me - this often means the wine maker doesn't necessarily do anything well - and the wine isn't all that great - so they say "it's meant to be had with food." Wow was I pleasantly surprised! When they say "served with food" - their wine tasting, which consisted of 5 wines for a $5 fee; they brought out a lovely little plate of foods to taste with each wine. There was a piece of cheese, a piece of chocolate, a dried fig, a piece of salami - and one other item I can't remember. The pairings were very well suited and the wines were impressive. There are 3 women who are all wine makers (which explains to me at least why they have so many varietals they work with). They have picnic tables with umbrella shades outside where you can buy a bottle and have a picnic outside - very nice. Staff was all very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. And of course they had a cool wine dog there. Have to have a wine dog at a winery. We had the kids with us and they made us feel very welcome. I even joined the wine club - the wines were that good. I'm so happy to have found another really good winery in The Gorge. My other favorite is Syncline, which we have been customers of since 2003. I hope AniChe continues to produce the quality of wines we tasted during our visit. I love supporting local businesses like this - and with wines this good, we will give them plenty of support!

Yelp
This place was so great! We randomly stumbled upon it after staying in White Salmon. It's in the hills, and the views of the gorge are fantastic! The ladies serving wine were very friendly. We opted to just get a glass of wine (around $9/ea) instead of the tasting. The barn you taste in is very cute, or you can sit outside and enjoy the view. The wine and view were great! You should check this place out if you're in the area.

Yelp
Holy amazing view batman! There are tons of places in the Gorge with beautiful views, but I have not quite experienced a spot in the Gorge quite on par with this view. It is mesmerizing and I found myself just staring off into the great beyond the whole time we were there. The wine. Delicious. I first heard of this winery when I received a bottle of 7 Gables for my birthday from a friend (who is a member here). I had been saving it for a special occasion, but now that I know how delicious it is, I will probably need to go ahead and drink it up in the VERY near future. The tasting was great and the fees were waved because we all bought bottles. I especially took a liking to Goat Boy and chose that one to take home with me. We decided to drink a bottle there and got a cheese and fig platter. We wanted to sit outside and enjoy the AMAZING view, but it was a bit windy and cooling off quickly on that day. We asked if there was any way we could get a fire started in one of the fire pits. They were very accommodating! She had a fire started for us in no time! One thing I would recommend is coming on a warm (or at least sunny) day. There was no seating inside the tasting room (if sitting down at any point is your thing). If you are going to want to hang out outside.... the sun will be your friend. The great wine, paired with the amazing view, joined by the friendly and accommodating staff..... this might be my favorite winery. It has won my heart. It was our last and 6th stop on the day we visited and what a way to end the day! If you are out exploring wineries in the Gorge and you don't stop here... you're doing it wrong!

Yelp
Our final stop on our wine tasting trip left something to be desired. We were thrilled that unlike most wineries, AniChe stayed open until 6pm and we raced to get here in time to try a flight. Unfortunately, the girl working the tasting room was not as thrilled as we were that we showed up at 5:45pm. I know, I get it, it sucks that we got there when we did but honestly just let us know that you are done for the evening rather than rush us through a tasting. We received very brief descriptions of the wines and despite probing questions it was obvious that she just wanted us out of there. When I purchased a bottle of the Three Witches I asked if there is a preferred year that I should open and was told that "they wouldn't sell a bottle of wine if it wasn't ready to drink". Yes, I get that it is going to be fine to drink but I also know that there is going to be a peak year in which I should drink it. If the answer to that question is 2013 then just tell me 2013 without being snotty about it. To top off our brief time here, this was the only winery that, even though we both purchased a bottle of wine were still charged the tasting fee. This was a first for me when wine tasting in the Columbia Gorge and irritating when comparing the experience to the other wineries that we visited on the day who did not charge us.

Yelp
Fantastic wine made by fantastic folks. Go up to the Underwood location for stellar views from a lovely farm. Each tasting comes with a food pairing that is always a crowd pleaser. This is also the best wine club in the Gorge with hella fun parties!

Daphne T.

Yelp
I had a extremely pleasant experience at this winery! Cozy, Unique, AND accommodating. The very nice lady (her name escapes me but she was wearing a dress? with a silver print and had wavy long hair) was amazing. She was very knowledgeable and so sweet... she even offered us blankets because it was cold. I came with my two friends and their 2yo daughter. There was a small play area for kids in the corner and about half a dozen tables to sit and enjoy our wine. There was a self-serve charcuterie spread available as well which was great. Theres small tables with local craft goods featuring jewelry, tapestries, clothes, and other artisanal artifacts. Can't wait to return and join their wine club!

Josh R.

Yelp
Worth the trip! First time stopping in and the women of Aniche were great. Great wine, great views, I can't wait to visit again.

Dawn G.

Yelp
What a great winery! It is family own and they make great blends!!! The owner/mom Rachel is a font of information and a great cook and writer. Ani is a joy. You are always greeted with a big welcoming smile and a little giggle that would brighten anyone's day. The view is fantastic. I highly reccomend

Sweet place. All female wine makers who name their wines after literary characters. Live bluegrass and brats surrounded by grapevines and overlooking the gorge. Great experience!

Yelp
Beautiful view, so-so wine. If you are wandering through the area, absolutely stop in! They do charge for tasting unless you buy two bottles. And my palette just couldn't find two worth buying. The people and property are great!
