NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"The Breakers was a staple of the Williamsburg late night dance scene, and it really was a bummer when they closed. We’re happy to report Animal is taking its place. It’s a queer bar that promises DJs, a disco ball, classic cocktails, and a wide open dance floor." - will hartman

Im coming here every week. Music can be terrible or terrific!! It’s lottery. Really depends of the choice of the DJ. Yesterday night it was awful. I talked with many guys agreeing the music was so bad. Last week was fabulous. How can it be so variable ??

this place is honestly one of the best new bars/clubs in New York. Located off Meeker Avenue in Williamsburg near Greenpoint., this former Breakers location has been remodeled to a fun but chic aesthetic. The music lineup is always solid so look for great house or techno music. They’ve gotten great DJs that typically would play at Basement or Good Room. The staff is not pretentious and the crowd is a fun interesting mix of different ages..

Popular gay club with a nice selection of cocktails and an outdoor space, which is great for summer nights. It gets pretty crowded on the weekends, and the DJ can be hit or miss.

It is a decent gay bar. It has a beautiful outdoor seating. But I feel personally the vibes are chiller relatively, which I appreciate. Friendly staff that make you feel welcomed especially with good prices drinks!

Exciting to go, dreadful once you’re there. Half the night is spent in a line—getting in, ordering a drink, finding the bathroom. The vibe is lost in a blur of chopped-up techno and aimless standing around. The pieces are there for something great, but the fun never materializes personally. Would I go back? Maybe—but only with a patience reserve.

I’m reading some of these ⭐️ reviews and wondering who hurt them as children, because clearly they’re delusional. Animal has no food, though it does feed the soul. Animal is all about the Alphabet soup, in staff and patrons. Animal bartenders stay serving alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks at the pace that all Queens expect. Animal’s DJs are a masterclass of queer dance scene. Yes, Friday and Saturday evenings are unruly - but if that’s not what you’re into, you shouldn’t be out in the city during the weekend. Animal builds community, supports local artists, and is generally a great space. It’s my local, and the staff is like family. The people who are missing my experience likely showed up on the busiest night expecting to be treated like a VIP, and were disappointed when that didn’t happen. Now, order a mezcal margarita, frozen espresso martini, or a dirty martini and make a friend.

There’s this male assistant at the bar who just disposed of my drink while I placed it visibly and reasonably within my reach with a reasonable impression to an ordinary person that I was still working on it. After I confronted him, with no apology or acknowledgment, he threatened to evict me from the establishment and said to me “this is my bar. Get out.”

After hearing so much hype about Animal, I decided to check it out last weekend—and wow, what a letdown. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this place has some serious issues to work through. The line situation was absolute chaos. Despite waiting for nearly an hour, I watched as countless people with "guest list" status bypassed the entire queue. Even more frustrating was seeing others simply walk right in without any staff intervention. The door policy seems completely arbitrary and disorganized. Once I finally made it inside, things only got worse - The layout is poorly designed, creating bottlenecks everywhere and making it nearly impossible to move between areas. It was unbearably hot—like sauna-level hot—with apparently no functioning air conditioning or ventilation. Getting a drink was a hopeless mission. The bars were understaffed and overwhelmed, resulting in 20+ minute waits just to order. For a club, the dance floor situation was pitiful. The space was so crowded and poorly arranged that actual dancing was out of the question. The energy was off. Between the frustration of getting in, the discomfort of the venue, and the inability to actually enjoy the music properly, it created a tense atmosphere rather than the fun night out I was hoping for. Animal needs to seriously reconsider their entire operation—from entry procedures to interior layout to basic amenities like proper cooling and bar service. Until they make some major changes, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for your night out. Definitely not worth the cover charge or the hassle.

Yelp
A great addition to the neighborhood, from the owners of the Exley comes Animal. The bar has an outdoor area, indoor area with big windows and the main dance-floor. Service is a bit slow depending on the crowds but once you are served the drinks are decent (most things are on tap). The music leaves a lot to be desired but hoping this will be improved as the venue becomes more popular. Overall, I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
All the hottest gays are here. Turn off your grindr and go OUT. The drinks are great. Indoor/outdoor space and a dark small back room for more intimate conversation.

Yelp
I'm so happy this place is here, it's more of a bar than a dance club, even though they have a DJ. I appreciate the Exley-style menu of cocktails instead of just dive bar options. They let this (unusual) space just do its thing and it works, there are lots of bar seats and tables and (unlike the Exley) it never feels claustrophobic, but even boasts an outdoor area. Their hours are also gay-customer-conducive, so you can hop on over after brunch, they open at 2 pm on weekends and 4 pm on weeknights to hit that Happy Hour sweet spot.

Yelp
The space is beautiful, and the sound system is equally beautiful. The music has been great every time I've visited. You can tell they take sound seriously. The energy livens more and more the later it is. It's a smooth pace. The drinks are delicious and served by bartenders who work their butts off to get through the crowd as quickly as possible while maintaining a welcoming vibe. Kudos to the bar owners for creating such a cute spot. A lot of thought went into it.

Yelp
Watch your credit card on file. They will overcharge you and you will be stuck with a bigger bill. I went in and they charged 2 extra drinks. I went up to a bartender and he said he fixed it but it was never changed.
