New Orleans’s Most Iconic Diners | Eater New Orleans

"If you’re looking for a diner with Creole flavor, Anita’s is the place. It’s a treasure in every sense, loved for so many things — savory, buttery grits topped with two slices of American cheese, calf liver and eggs, pork chops, and hot sausage po’ boys, to name a few. Expect a warm reception and friendly banter at the wraparound lunch counter at this enduring, decades-old fixture of Tulane Avenue." - Eater Staff

Checked out Anita's for the 1st time. The new spot will definitely be a plus for business. Attended for an office get together. The hashbrowns are definitely a must. The grits were good and the biscuits were amazing. I definitely recommend. Some people were complaining there wasn't enough commotion but I never experienced the old spot to compare. Parking can be an issue due to the meters and limited space but 1 hour was enough time on the meter with no worries.

Google
Unfortunately it was a bad experience for us. We sat at the table for 20 minutes before anyone said a word to us. It wasn’t until she saw my frustration that she even came to our table. Then sat another 35 minutes before we got our food. BOTH orders were wrong (but the server did apologize twice). Eggs were cold, the rest was warm at best. Not to mention witnessing two separate arguments amongst the servers. Lastly I asked for orange juice and was brought some cheap knock off brand of a juice mix. It was just bad all around.

Wow! THE ALL NEW ANITAS GRILL NOLA! With the old location demolished. It has been relocated to the iconic Howard Building at 833 Howard Avenue in the CBD. All the equipment, furniture and fixtures are new and very clean. The atmosphere is amazing, large glass windows give way to beautiful views of the city life and it’s capacity is more than doubled from the old location! Check them out!!! Opening soon!!!

Everyone was great! I fresh off a flight so excited to experience Anita’s and it has been years since I’ve had a chance to eat there. Everything was still wonderful I enjoyed it.

Google
My liver was overcooked and hard eve. Either the gravy, my husband steak was overcooked asked for medium and got it well done. My son grit bowl came out 10 minutes after our food was on the table. Fogot to get a pic of his grit bowl as i didn't get to the table with our food.

Google
It has “world famous” on the sign which makes it seem appealing but it did not live up to its name. The place can use an update, cleanliness is questionable and the food was not the best. 2/3 pancakes were burnt and the sausage wasn’t cooked fully so I ate around the rim. My husband enjoyed his omelette and the waitress (Danielle) was really good.

Always heard about this place. I finally had the pleasure of eating here. Atmosphere feels like an old school diner. The workers were so friendly and the portions were generous. I am very picky about my pancakes, but those buttermilk pancakes were delicious! My husband enjoyed his ham and cheese omelet, with his side of grits. Next time I'll try the grilled pork chop. It seemed to be very popular and it looked scrumptious.

Google
The setting was nice. The waitress service was not bad. I came with a party of 6. Unfortunately everyone at the table got their food and finished their plates before we even got our food. Mind you we only ordered bacon, eggs, and pancakes. Everyone else ordered steak and eggs.

Yelp
Man I had a taste for breakfast and this place here does me right every time I'm come!! Smothered Liver with onion and gravy with grits and scrambled eggs and a pancake on the side OMG!! I left happy and content! The waitress was sweet and funny the atmosphere remind me of a breakfast spot on the go..

Yelp
Went to Anita's this past Sunday! It's been around for years and sometimes my mom gets nostalgic and wants to go. She loves the liver and onions here. I enjoyed my pancakes and I also got fried chicken tenders which were seasoned well and fried fresh to order. Ambiance wise it's a greasy spoon. Nothing fancy or pretentious but you're going for the food. My 1 complaint is it was HOT! No AC in 90°+ temperature was nearly intolerable for me. The service was kind of slow but that could be due to the chicken being fried to order. Last thing to know is they are a cash only establishment. There is an ATM available on site

Yelp
Went in this morning to get some breakfast. Service was pretty slow but I wasn't in a hurry. Then I start hearing 2 waitresses and another male employee start yelling at each other. It escalated into full on yelling, name calling, curse words, other employees begging them to stop. Once the male employee went back into the back, the two female employees followed and kept yelling, and it got started up again. It went on for at least 10 minutes. I do not go to restaurants to be stressed by other people yelling at each other.

Yelp
This was my first time here, but won't be my last! Located on the corner of Tulane & Galvez, this gym is directly across from UMC. I've always passed them and never knew their hours, so I didn't stop. Today I had time and I'm glad I spent it ordering from the them. The restaurant had the ambiance of a classic diner. It was a very friendly environment and the waitress was ready to take my order. There was a slight wait because the food is made completely fresh (I love that). I ordered the hamburger steak meal and as I write this, take bites every other sentence. The food is soooo good Im saying "mmm" after every bite. I ordered to go and my bag had all the condiments, jelly, napkins, and salt. I love that they do that without asking, because I always forget to ask. The food is very reasonably priced, which is amazing even with their fame and well known status. I love that they stay true to their formula and stand out from other breakfast places here!

Yelp
While enroute to another breakfast location, our Uber driver recommended that we eat at this restaurant over our first choice due to the long lines in the heat. She was absolutely correct. This is a mom and pop restaurant that has been around for years. It's located in a neighborhood and I would say a local favorite. My friends and I did not have to wait more than 15 minutes to get a table. I was able to order the steak and eggs with hash browns with a pancake on the side. Everything was seasoned very well and the flavors reminded me of when my grandmother would cook me breakfast on a Sunday morning before church when i was a child. My only complaint was I requested my steak be cooked to medium and it was cooked well done. Other than that, all my friends enjoyed their meals. I thoroughly enjoyed sampling the liver and onions. This place is definitely a keeper and a New Orleans gem.

Yelp
My first time at Anita's before going to the Saints game on Sunday. Instantly when you walk in, you smell the food. I ordered the eggs and bacon. The eggs and bacon comes with two eggs, three strips of bacon, hash browns, and toast. And it was delicious! The staff was friendly and the service was quick, but it is cash only. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
The fried chicken, the hamburger steak was out of this world It felt like eating at grandma's house
google avatar

Denise T.

Yelp
Not a whole lot of seating and not as charming as it was before that tv show remodeled the place. It's NOT 24 hours and only takes cash but there is an ATM. It is, however, the only place I've found that does chunky hash browns. The food is good and reasonably priced. The menu is pretty varied as well. It's not a fancy place but it will fill you up right.

Yelp
Best place for down south cooking and southern hospitality. My hubby and I are here the weekend before Christmas. The portions are generous and the food is delicious! I had 3 breakfasts from my one plate. My favorite item is the smothered potatoes. I highly recommend and will be back!

Valencia M.

Yelp
Thank you Mrs. Danielle! The food and service was amazing. Enjoyed the hamburger steak breakfast and the hubby loved the fried pork chop breakfast. Definitely coming back every time we are in the area!

Les C.

Yelp
I have passed on trying this business numerous times, primarily because of the dilapidated appearance. My loss. I buried my bias this morning and had a great breakfast with friendly people. Unlike the outside, it is spotless inside. Don't let looks deceive you! Ask for Allison (I should have asked the correct spelling), her friendliness made my day.

K Anthony T.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Real eggs and tasty pork patties and grits. My wife ordered liver, onions and grits. They also give you nice portions It took a few minutes for our order to come. Cash Only

Vanessa S.

Yelp
Anita's have been around for a long time food is good but the employees need to wash hands and also wear gloves dealing with people food. I have seen them collect money and immediately go and make a sandwich. Money is dirty.

Indya L.

Yelp
Classic I had the crab omelette. The fresh juices are bomb I love the set up will be back again soon

Yelp
Great food always have to stop by when I visit Great service and great people.Always a smile and a good conversation.

Yelp
Good basic breakfast. Everything cooked as ordered. My wife loved her veggie omelet with grits. Hot sausage quality could have been better. Good hash browns, worth the .85 up charge as I don't eat grits. Friendly service, clean place, easy parking, open at 7 am. We will return

Yelp
This is the best place to grab food no matter what the occasion. The food is comforting and so good, I always get the steak and egg with hash browns and it never disappoints. The workers are also the sweetest people in the world they make you feel like family. It really is like eating at your grandparents house or something, I genuinely have so much love for this place.
google avatar

Natasha C.

Yelp
We were looking for a quick breakfast place on our way home from New Orleans and this place delivered on service, and flavor. The western omelette was delicious and full of fillings. The hash browns are more of skillet potatoes but are sooo good! A friend got chicken and waffles he said they were very very good. Not a person at our table was able to finish our entire plates. The staff was friendly and efficient. This is a must try if you love diner type breakfast.
google avatar

DiAndra H.

Yelp
We enjoyed every second at this restaurant. The staff was amazing and you know your back home when people walk in and speak or just say good morning. Food was delicious, staff was prompt and funny, if your new going just follow the driveway on the side for parking.
google avatar

Mindy W.

Yelp
This place was an awesome find for breakfast! The kitchen is out in the open and it was like 3 grandmas were cooking for their families simultaneously. My chicken and waffles and grits were delicious and everyone enjoyed their entrees: steak and eggs, omelet, and liver and eggs. The service was incredible and I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup! One drawback was the ladies bathroom was dirty...but 10/10 would go back!
google avatar

April A.

Yelp
Perfect breakfast spot. Food was delicious. Very casual Cash only. Southern cooking at its finest.

Latoya J.

Yelp
If you want some real home style breakfast you have to come here. I mean everything I had was so good. Danielle was amazing( I even gave her a nick name " the flash") she was hosting, serving and cooking. She really made my dining experience a good one. You have to try the liver and the pork chops everything was seasoned so well. It takes a while to get the food but it is worth the wait because EVERYTHING is made fresh to order. You have to get gravy on everything lol. Our trip to New Orleans was a good experience because of this place!

Yelp
Getting a COVID booster at the downtown New Orleans VA musta given Ric and appetite. So we crossed the street and stopped at Anita's on Tulane. The gal who greeted us was also our waitress. Furthermore, she did the safe distance guidelines and protocol with such a sweet attitude! (Other eating places could learn from these ladies). The three staff members out front keep it running. I had the sausage biscuits... yumm. And Ric, being a ham and egg kinda guy..well.... So if you're in the nabe, do stop by.
google avatar

Manman L.

Yelp
This is historically one of the best diners in the city of New Orleans walked in and was not greeted at all.. Tables was packed and I told at least 30 minutes outside and nobody still wasn't eating
google avatar

Yelp
We arrived in New Orleans early & Anita's was the suggested restaurant to get a good breakfast. Upon arriving it instantly reminded me of Waffle House. Everyone in my group ordered the Chicken & Waffles i was the only one who chose white mean instead of strips. The waffle was exceptional it tasted the the batter was homemade. The chicken batter was exceptional however, once i ate the batter off, the meat tasted spoiled & it had a strange smell to it underneath the batter so i stopped eating it. I ate a strip from someone in my group & wished i would have gotten the stripe instead. I let the waitress know but by then i was full. The waffle pretty much filled me up & i had lots of coffee since our flight was early. Everything was great.

Yelp
Our uber driver recommended this place to us. It was fantastic breakfast food!!! Super friendly, family oriented place. Loved every bit of it!
google avatar

Christian J.

Yelp
So this place definitely hit the spot after a long night of drinking and partying. The building reminds you of a Waffle House or a classic diner but has more of a Mom and Pop family vibe. They serve breakfast all day as well as southern staples fried chicken, fried fish and fried pork chops. I had the the eggs Home fries with eggs and cheese with bacon I also had pancakes. I highly recommend the pork chops also.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Just stopped in for breakfast. Good simple food, fast service and very friendly staff. Estelle was my waitress and very friendly and outgoing!

Desma C.

Yelp
Food here was delicious definitely reminded me of the food grandparents would cook as a little girl. Very satisfied

Yelp
Was recommended by a family member BUT I must say she must not know what caliber of a pallet that we posses. So when you walk in, you better fend for yourself to find a seat because you will be standing there looking lost. Ordered a Western Omelet and pork chop, eggs, and hash potatoes. Had no idea how long it would take but had to imagine a long one. So our food finally came and the pork chops was dry and under seasoned. Yaull know better than this! The cook was hacking and coughing all over the grill but what the hell....the heat will kill it! Oh wow toast finally showed up and I didnt know how to act. Omelet was moist and good which earned 4 stars until it was time to pay. What is Browns for grits? There is two charges added on my receipt for this and one , I didnt order any grits, and two, I dont like gravy. I didnt order this and sure enough she took her tip! $1.70 all for you.

Yesica N.

Yelp
Must stop there for breakfast! Had scrambled eggs, ham and grits. Was excellent, hit the spot, along with awesome cup of coffee.

Yelp
Excellent food. Roast beef poboy was on point. Great, friendly staff and service and a pleasant dining atmosphere. Definitely not a tourist trap, just great food. I will definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
Good cash only, old greasy where the ladies behind the counter know everyone sitting opposite them. Ordered the hamburger steak and eggs and hash browns with onion gravy. Probably insanely unhealthy and it put my to sleep for the day (which was the point because I had to work night shift). The place keeps odd hours being open daytime during the week and til the early morning hours on the weekend. Despite their hanging sign saying 24 hours. This is one of the restaurants that helps service some of the hospital crowd and like I said, The people behind the counter were friendly and knew a lot of the clientele. To the point where they were asking after family and personal matters they had obviously discussed st recent visits. It had been awhile since I had visited and while they looked at me like a new face, they were incredibly friendly and pretty efficient. I was in and out of there in as much time as I needed.
google avatar

Devona M.

Yelp
Good food. You gotta wait for the waiters they take Forever to place your order. But overall I always come back. Ain't nothing like a good ole southern diner! It get packed on the weekend mornings so be prepared to wait

Coreiona G.

Yelp
Amazing service. COVID19 procedures were in place. Temperature check and sanitation upon entry. Seating area cleaned in between costumers. Food was seasoned to perfection.
google avatar

Shane W.

Yelp
It's an old school diner. Think Waffle House, but more authentic. I ate eggs, ham, grits and toast w/coffee. It was perfect. Nobody is in a hurry so just relax and enjoy your coffee w/ the paper and listed to the locals talk about football etc. I would definitely come back. It's great to see shops like this still in business. It's real Americana. Be polite and mind your manners....your grandparents work here. "Yes ma'am...No ma'am...please and thank you". Enjoy.

Yelp
I have been coming here for breakfast for over 25 years. I used to recommend it to people. Lately they are running a booming carry out business. The phone rings constantly and orders are taken while a dozen in house customers sit being ignored. I have had to give up and walk out the last couple times I tried to eat here. I always tipped around 30% in the days when I could place an order. They can make phone in carry out orders top priority if they want to but most people don't tip much when they pick up their own food. Seems like a foolish business choice to me. If you are determined to eat here, bring your cell phone and call in your order while you're walking in or waiting (and waiting...) to get someone to notice that you want to spend money here. Or if you are really hungry you can do what I did today and go down the street to Los Catrachos and get grilled skirt steak and scrambled eggs and fresh house-made tortillas. You'll be finished eating before anyone at Anita's would have taken your order.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Good, old fashion breakfast menu. The liver was a little overdone, and my over easy eggs were as well. Everyone else's food was tasty and well executed.
google avatar

T. Y.

Yelp
From the time we stepped I could smell how good the food was if that makes sense. The customer service was great. Our waitress was on us as soon as we stepped in which I loved. I ordered grits/eggs/and chicken my mom had a ham omelette which was huge and she loved it. I enjoyed my food also and the laughter and vibe of Anita's. I'll definitely come back here whenever I visit New Orleans. Good people and good food...
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
Such an awesome find because it's not far from where I live! Some of the best fried chicken and waffles I've had in a long time!!! The hash browns were delicious as well! The service was great and everyone was smiling and having a great time! We went super late night but it wasn't super crowded even though people were coming and going! I can't wait to go back and get the fried chicken again!!!!
google avatar

Rikers E.

Yelp
The food was delicious. Ordered breakfast, Grits and Eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. Everything was tasty, service with a smile. Parked out front, not sure if there is additional parking out back.
google avatar

Helen M.

Yelp
Boy this place awesome. THEY TCB! Take Care Of Business. The food is delicious. It smells delicious. The aroma of a steak and seasoned omelets slaps you across the face when you walk in the place. It reminds me of my mommy house. That good aroma just like home. I just hate that it takes so long for food, but if my food gonna be the bomb I will wait. Lol. I had grits and cheesr, , d & d smoke sausage , and a biscuit. Creamy grits, and crispy smoke sausage just the way I like it. Just time to prepare it takes so long. I feel like I've been waiting for ever. But o enjoyed my meal so I can't complain!
google avatar

Coco N.

Yelp
Super impressed to with their adherence to the CDC guidelines to make me feel safe! I was graded as soon as I walked in the door and they took my order right away after they took my temperature and required that I wear a mask. They also had me sanitize my hands and sign my name into a book. Not really sure why I had to sign my name into the book but I'm OK with it and the friend chicken was very tasty!!
google avatar

Speaks H.

Yelp
I'll keep it short. Food: it was ok. Not bad not the best. Place: small, gets crowded and stays crowded. Service: kinda slow. They need to hire more people to help. Price: reasonable It's CASH ONLY BUT has an ATM inside with a ATM fee of $3.00
google avatar

Lori P.

Yelp
First time to visit and I'm hooked! We walked in and were seated by the delightful Ms. Diane, who gave us our menus and treated us like royalty. I I IMMEDIATELY spotted, "Liver and eggs." I quickly read the description while hoping against hope that it was what I thought...SCORE! Traditional liver and onions with 2 eggs and grits!! Delicious!! Acvording to our wonderful Ms. Diane, that is Anita's signature dish. Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Katelyn H.

Yelp
Omg this place has horrible service the workers are rude and are not concerned with your needs I sat at a table 20 mins and never was greeted and when I did get greeted they took forever to take my order I decided to leave don't eat here if you expect good attentive service and not to mention the prices are ridiculous.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Yum, yum, yum! A great spot to come in for breakfast. We came in right off the flixbus from Texas. I had the steak and eggs and it was lovely. The three women working were very busy but were on top of everything and I don't have a single complaint about the service. Food was awesome, especially the hash browns. If you're in the area come check it out!
google avatar

Lenea M.

Yelp
OMG!!!!!!!! PLEASE TRY.... if you are a out of towner please go here. Went for breakfast almost everyday I was there. I had fried catfish and grits. The next day I had fried pork chops and grits. This brought me back to my child hood... for all my coffee lovers better than McDonald's. This place is reasonable and you see your food getting cooked right in front of you. If you are looking for a place to soak up all the fish bowls and hand grenades this is it... good comfort food for the soul.... ohhh btw the biscuits are addictive....
google avatar

Tamathra M.

Yelp
Short but sweet review. Great old school hole in the wall cash only cafe in the heart of New Orleans Great place to people watch and try and understand the locals that are packing the place yucking up the days events.
