Metro Detroit’s Best Lebanese Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"With four locations in Southeast Michigan, this casual Lebanese restaurant serves delightful lunch fare like shawarma bowls, falafel sandwiches, salads, and even a lamb burger. The AK Takeaway outpost downtown leans more fast-casual with bowls, salads, and handhelds, but the original Ferndale restaurant is a full-service spot open for lunch and dinner with beer, wine, and cocktails. Online ordering and delivery is available." - Danny Palumbo

Fast-Casual Spinoff of Anita’s Kitchen Aims for June Debut in Detroit - Eater Detroit

"AK Takeaway, the anticipated fast-casual spinoff of Anita’s Kitchen, is making big strides towards opening day in downtown Detroit. The new location will feature a counter service format focused on carryout for breakfast and lunch. Google
Great place for lunch if you work downtown. •Atmosphere• This restaurant is very clean, has good seating options and really has a great downtown vibe. Easy to access and has a great location right by the people mover. •Service• They have fantastic service. They are friendly , professional, and helpful but best of all they are accurate in making sure that their orders come out correct and with the proper utensils needed to enjoy your meal. Love their online ordering option! •Food• Their food comes out hot and fresh and is a decent portion for the price! No complaints here, I really enjoy their Shawarma. All in all I give this restaurant a 3.9/5 flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Would recommend you give it a try, might try it out again if I am in the area.

Google
This place was super-crowded because of some AI convention going on down the corner. By the grace of angels, we found a place to sit down and enjoy. What makes Anita's even better is that Detroit does not have a fantastic food scene. Hopefully, the city continues to enjoy a resurgence and that this place is E pluribus unum.

Google
Grabbed lunch here while in Detroit for a conference. Chopped salad was fantastic. Fresh tasty ingredients. Perfect salad for a warm day. I love Mediterranean food and I will definitely be back again. The place was packed at lunch time which tells you something. However the salad came out quick. I was there for less than 10 minutes to order pay and leave with my excellent lunch.

Google
We had this for a small corporate lunch and I was very impressed. Everyone ordered different items and no one had a single complaint. My Chicken Gyro was delicious and had a lovely sauce that balanced it all out. The pricing also looked very good for what you got!

Google
Thank you Anita's Kitchen for catering an amazingly healthy lunch for my company meeting today in Downtown Detroit! The food was truly authentic and very fresh. My guests all enjoyed and even went back for seconds. Highly recommend!

Google
During my recent conference trip, we had our lunch multiple times here. It was greatly satisfying and also moderately priced. The only downside is they close at 3:00 p.m. and also not open on weekends.

Google
I was upset with the portion sizes for the fries with the lamb burger. For the price of the burger and the inability to sub for a soup I would have thought there would be more than 15 fries that are might I add cold. And the burger is cold to the touch. Food doesn’t even mirror what’s on the website which is disappointing.

Google
Just not sure why the chicken is grey on some photos and my order but not in all the reviews. I guess you’d have to dine in to get fresh chicken. Also - this delivery was on its way less than 15mins from ordering. I’m not feeling confident that any of this food was cooked fresh.

Yelp
We were here on a Friday night. We had to wait maybe 5-10 minutes for a table. We got a little high top in the bar which was fun because there was a nice crowd of people to watch. We were able to carry on our private conversation even though it was a little loud. The food was excellent. I ordered a glass of Pinot noir, lemon lentil soup and the falafel entree. It was a fun place to be on a Friday night. I will definitely be back. I'm looking forward to eating on their patio when the weather is nicer.

Yelp
Today we catered lunch and it was so yummy. We got the shawarma bowl set up, fattoush salad with feta and the eggplant salad. (Get the eggplant salad!) The hummus is perfect and creamy with lots of tahini flavor, the chicken was well-seasoned, and all the salads were super fresh. The fattoush salad dressing is the best I've had, and the eggplant salad is amazing, trust me. I make something similar, and this was just as good! Delivery was on time and the staff was professional and friendly the whole way through the process. Can't wait to order again!

Yelp
We enjoyed a light lunch here before the Detroit Free Press marathon. The service was quick and we enjoyed what we ate.

Yelp
When we worked in the Ferndale area, Anita's was one of our regular spots for lunch. It was there that I discovered my long-standing love for garlic sauce; one that turned into an obsession. So, when I learned that another location of this fantastic restaurant was less than 10 minutes away from my current office - I was eager to visit. While this is more of a quick-casual restaurant, think Panera, than the location in Ferndale, it is perfect if you are looking for something grab-and-go. You can order the meal online and pick-up the meal from a separate entrance, which was my routine. When I first started ordering from here, I thought it was the ideal place for when I had back-to-back meetings and can only spare 30 minutes for your mid-day meal. I've had many delicious take-out lunches here, including: Greek salad with chicken shawarma - The bowl included diced tomatoes, cucumber chunks, feta crumbles, briny black olives, sweet beets, thinly sliced red onions, and a good amount of chickpeas. It was so much better than the salads that I make for myself daily. The chicken shawarma was well-seasoned and warm. I nibbled on the salad for most of the afternoon - it was that good that I was always thinking of my next visit here. Greek bowl that included lamb gyro meat served with rice, hummus, salad, and tzatziki sauce and the chicken feta fattoush bowl. The latter is similar to the Greek bowl, no beets though, with chicken. Yum and yum. Gyro sandwich with extra sauce - well-seasoned gyro meat on a warm pita. Mediterranean bowl - Falafel and meat grape leaves were served with mujadara, hummus, and tabbouleh. I typically don't care for falafel but these were delicious. I've also sampled the baklava and banana bread - thumbs up for both of them. Since the new year, perhaps because more and more offices have implemented return to work, turnaround times have been very slow. So now, I'm packing a salad again rather than eating out because of the inconsistent service (hence the lower rating). Which is a shame. I love the food here but I have limited patience for waiting. Incidentally, I liked the overall design aesthetics of the space. It was bright and spacious with good flow between those there to place an order and those there to pick up an order.

Yelp
Food is not the same as the one in Ferndale, food has a weird nutmeg taste, doesn't taste fresh and the eating space is small overcrowded and uncomfortable.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
I come here quite often. I absolutely love the chicken fetoush salad. The meat is well seasoned and the salad dressing that is out of this world. I can't help but to think about the oatmeal cream every time I come in here because those small delights were soooooooooooo good! I miss you oatmeal cream pie. The rice pudding is good, just need some cinnamon on top. I like the lemon tart pie as well. Get here soon!

Yelp
I love Anita's Kitchen! This location in downtown Detroit is probably the one I frequented the most given its ease of ordering and proximity to the place where I used to work. The food here is so so good, but my main complaint is how poorly the food travels. Most of the time, I am carrying out from here, and their food is hot and within a matter of minutes the condensation from the food sort of crumples the container it's in as well so everything just gets soggy and doesn't travel well. Other than that, the service here is great, online ordering is your best friend, they will typically always finish an order earlier than the time you set it to for pick up as well, so take that into consideration as you're placing your order. They have a very modern, fast casual set up of tables and chairs set up inside the restaurant for you to sit and eat at, just making note that it'll probably be pretty jam-packed on weekdays during the lunch rush given its location!

Yelp
I love the food. It was quick and delicious. I enjoyed the outdoor seating in the summer. Perfect. Happy tummy. Happy me.

Yelp
The location of Anita's Kitchen is great, with it being really central downtown Detroit, only a few minutes walk from Campus Martius park. It's a really great place for lunch, with really good portions that end up giving me enough food for two meals. It's a quick place to grab food and has seating inside as well. I think it's a solid go-to place for lunch, especially if you work downtown, and would recommend it if you're in the mood for healthier food or something more middle eastern.

Christopher R.

Yelp
I can see why this place is popular - the food is fresh and fast. The reason for the 3 star review, however, is based on my recent chicken shwarma order. The good - lots of chicken and garlic. The bad - one wilted piece of lettuce and one shriveled pickle slice (not the Arabic pickle spears, like authentic shwarmas). So, I'll go back since it's a block from my office, but I'll sure to insist on inclusion of veggies.

Yelp
Perfect spot for a quick lunch. I dropped by this place while attending a conference at the Cobo Center. I really have no complaints about AKtakeway. During my visit, I ordered a lunch bowl (about 12 bucks), which came with quite a bit of food. Actually, the shawarma lunch bowl could be divided between two people or two separate meals (lunch and dinner). I would not say that the place is top notch in terms of Middle Eastern food, but it gets the job done. The service was pretty fast, and the workers were really nice. The restaurant is a bit on the small side so there may not be ample seating if you are grabbing lunch during a lunch rush. I guess that's why the restaurant is a called AKtakeaway . . . they want you to take your food away. ;)

Yelp
Although this is a bit expensive this place is amazing!! The best hummus ever and the portions for are huge. The shawarma plate is huge and perfect with all the fixings. Also don't forget they have breakfast sandwiches. These are top notch as well. Considering I work next door and walk by this everyday it has become a bit of an addiction. Check it out!!

Yelp
Best mujadra and swarms sandwiches. Lemon Chicken breast very tasty and succulent. No bad choices here.

Yelp
Oh how I have been wanting to try this place! I've had this place bookmarked and haven't stoped in. Well, today was the day I stoped in to try AKtakeaway. Upon entering AKtakeaway I was like "oh this is a cute place to get quick lunch on the go." Also it's clean minimalist esthetic I always appreciate. The way they prepare your food is like chipotle style, but they don't ask you about what you want on your bowl. I felt a little confused like are you gonna ask me as I go or do I go over there and wait like Starbucks. Either way you get to watch your food be made. That is always a plus! I did order the shawarma bowl, which came with chicken, Tabouli, hummus, rice, pickles, and garlic sauce. I will say it looked yummy and it tasted yummy. The only thing that made me feel disappointed was the lack of rice. The way they made the bowel makes it look like a lot of food, but it wasn't. It was just a lot of hummus! The hummus ratio was to much and the gave me barely any rice. A ton of hummus and chicken is a mushy experience. So maybe next time I would ask for more rice. So, for the price you pay for their bowls is and the amount you get is not worth it. Yes, it tasted good, but my portions were not equal. When there are places like freshii or chipotle with cheaper priced bowls and more food it seems better pocket wise to go there. Yes, those place aren't Mediterranean flares, but hey. I would recommend getting their shawarma sandwich it's 6 dollars. Save half your coin! Like I said the flavors were yum yum, just small portions. *Don't be deceived by shawarma bowl picture.*

Yelp
I can't recall how long it's been since this place opened, but it quickly became one of my "go to" spots for lunch. I work right across the street so it is super convenient. Plus, their app makes it so easy to order online and they are frequently providing coupons, so it's hard to beat. the staff is very friendly and efficient and they definitely know how to cater to a work day audience in a busy downtown area. As for the food...it's excellent! One of the reasons I like it so much is that there are so many great choices on the menu. When they first opened, I used to get the Buffalo Blue bowl or the Falafel bowl all of the time. More recently I've become a fan of the spinach pie and their caesar salad. I know a caesar sounds pretty pedestrian, but there's something unique about the dressing that gives it a ton of flavor without feeling heavy. Sometime, if I'm not too hungry, I just opt for some roasted red pepper hummus and pita bread. It gets pretty busy at lunch time, so if you are going to go, I strongly advise you order ahead.

Yelp
I work nearby and I've tried AKTakeaway several times. I really haven't had any memorable food from here, everything's been just so/so. Pros: -Convenient location -Online ordering (and you get a text when your order is ready) Cons: -Groups of employees (identifiable by uniforms) are often huddled nearby smoking cigarettes, kind of gives off a grimy vibe -If you don't place an online order during the lunch rush, you'll wait in line to order forever -I may be the only one that cares about this, but they don't offer sides of rice on their menu -Sandwich quality varies greatly from day to day; some days they're ok, some days they have too much sauce, other days they're not packed well and are hard to eat without making a mess

Yelp
Delicious food, healthy options, nice-sized portions, amazing baked goods, and super friendly service...!!! What else can you ask for!? :) Highly recommended!
google avatar

Julie A.

Yelp
Delicious food. We ordered the lamb burger, grapes leaves with lamb, fries and wings. The lamb burger, wings, and fries were delightful. The lamb burger especially was full of flavor on a nice, soft bun. One order of fries was plenty to split. The wings were hot and spicy (6 to an order). The grape leaves were lackluster. They were freshly made, but were a bit dry. The garlic sauce or yogurt was a helpful resolution. They had a spread of dessert, which looked yummy and pita chips for the taking. This is definitely a nice lunch spot for a fairly quick lunch on the run.
google avatar

Nellie T.

Yelp
Since they opened, I have been here at least twice a week for lunch. Not only is the food good, it's consistently good. I've ordered salads, wraps, and bowls from AK and the food across the board is worth the price tag. It is a little expensive (roughly $10+ per person for lunch), but if you're looking for a healthy and flavorful lunch, it's totally worth it. And, the bowls are super filling -- I can usually get two meals out of them. Pro-tip: You can easily place an order ahead of time, whether on the phone or online, so you can skip the line.

Yelp
This. Place. Is. The. Jam. Always been a huge fan of Anita's Kitchen in Ferndale. Fast casual Mediterranean food is a huge opportunity for Detroit, as it's hard to find something quick & healthy and this place doesn't disappoint. The food is incredible with healthy portions of everything you love. Hummus is the best. Shawarma bowl should win a damn trophy. And can we talk about the fact that there are breakfast options? I just died and went to heaven. Prices are reasonable, staff is super friendly, and the food is 5 stars. VIVA ANITA!
google avatar

Susie A.

Yelp
My update for my experience is based on requesting for a freshly prepared tabouli salad and being declined. The team member kept referring to one that was made in the the morning . I would have taken it but I don't like the fact that it was sitting there and may have been touched by many people before consuming it . The first time I went there the service was a bit better but I just wouldn't want to go back at this point .
google avatar

Varun R.

Yelp
I work next door and couldn't be happier with the service here. They are probably the best place downtown to get quality food quickly. I came in at lunch rush and my sandwich was ready in 5 minutes, even with a high volume of phone orders coming in. I got the Super Falafel sandwich and house fries. Pretty filling and I couldn't even finish. The fries are well seasoned and come with garlic butter. It's not just any garlic butter, it's got some other interesting flavors in it - super good. Would recommend to anyone downtown in need of something quick but better than Jimmy Johns.
google avatar

Rafael G.

Yelp
Extremely clean, order-at counter lunch place. The ingredients are on display and it's pretty clear that they're fresh. On top of all that the food is fan-fucking-delicious (does that work? Now that I wrote it out it seems like it could be misinterpreted). And to prove that this is a real review, I'm going to tell you about something I didn't like. The House Potatoes are like soggy french fries (do you capitalize the French in fries?).
google avatar

Christopher G.

Yelp
I just ordered the Roasted bowl for the 2nd time. The first time which was a couple of months ago, it was AMAZING and well work the $13.00. Today, It was: 1. Thrown together 2. A this slice of overcooked Salmon 3. Every ingredient was skimped including the slimy asparagus...HORRIBLE I'm imagining the have a new low quality chef, since the last time I was there. Nevertheless, I refuse to take the chance of that happening again..the price is too high to roll the dice like that. There are too many great choices Downtown Detroit
google avatar

Bradleigh M.

Yelp
All my lunch problems, have just been solved. This place is great. I came in the first week they opened and have been in every week since. I've been a long time customer of their place in Ferndale, so when I saw this was open I had to try it. They have everything you need; soups, sandwiches, salads, bowls, breakfast. What else do you need?? Im always looking for healthy lunch options and sometimes struggle to find one that is both affordable and tasty. AK Takeaway has it. The first thing I tried was the roasted bowl. It has roasted veggies, brown rice, black beans, salmon with their dill tahini sauce- $13. It was so good and I was able to stick to my diet. Since discover AK downtown I have spent way to much money on eating out, but I don't mind cuz I love it!

Yelp
I am visiting Detroit and happened to find this place to take cover during a random rain storm. The food is amazing! The hummus and pita chips are so good... but pretty much everything ordered in our party was delicious. I'll be back to visit before heading back home.
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
I have always loved Antia's in Ferndale, so when I heard they were opening a fast casual place downtown I just assumed it would be amazing. And they did not disappoint! The food is outstanding, the staff are welcoming and well trained, and I did not expect the baked goods to be as PHENOMENAL as they turned out to be. Highly, highly, highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
So, I go here at least once a week. 1. Because it's right by my office and super fast and 2. Because it's delish. My two go to orders are the chicken feta fattoush salad and the chicken shawarma bowl. The salad is pretty straightforward and here is what I will say about their shawarma bowl: - chicken is good and flavorful - rice is meh. Definitely not the rice you get at a traditional middle eastern restaurant (which I LOOOVE). - I keep forgetting I don't like tabbouleh - so it is 100% my bad that ordered this bowl and not asked for that to be left out; I did mix the hommus bc I love the garlic - the people who work here are pretty much the best. Nice, helpful and pretty darn fast. I've been there when it's busy and again when it's not and they're always upbeat. 5+++++ stars for them - dessert. OMG. Their desserts. I have had their oatmeal cream cookie deliciousness (so sugary and blissful) and the magic bar and tahini brownie are amazing.
google avatar

Nathan P.

Yelp
Hit and miss, mostly miss. I would only recommend lunch sandwiches. This omelette is a prime example of how this place can only do a sandwich (and only a mediocre one). My omelette was over cooked and basically just a bunch of potatoes with eggs on the side. I paid for an extra egg and extra sausage and not sure I got either (update: definitely didn't get either). Incredibly disappointing is an understatement for this omelette. This place should be ashamed of putting out that product. I don't put ketchup on a good breakfast. Doused this one. Don't do breakfast here, unless something drastic changes. This place is right next to my office, so I am likely to give it one more go. Hopefully they can change my mind, but I feel like I've been burned on a couple of their items (there is much better fattoush and falafel nearby).

Artishia L.

Yelp
Excellent take out and eat in restaurant. Breakfast was great, pastries were even better. Great place to checkout when in Detroit
google avatar

Samrat B.

Yelp
The ambience is little confusing for sit down but the chicken shawarma bowl is great not as authentic Mediterranean as there was no hot sauce to pair it with. But I would order again for a quick takeaway.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
This is my favorite lunch spot downtown. I recommend a Lebanese salad topped with chicken with a side of rice and garlic sauce.
google avatar

Mark K.

Yelp
Amazing food, every bit as good as their Ferndale location, and is a wonderful addition to downtown.
google avatar

Leigh K.

Yelp
Excellent! As a huge fan of Anitas Kitchen's other location in Ferndale, I was thrilled to see this location open up in downtown Detroit. Love the new menu items, and their fast, friendly service. It's easy to eat healthy with so many great choices on the menu.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
One of the newest eateries in downtown Detroit. You will love everything about this place from the food to the hospitality of the staff! The owners are friendly and visible to the customers. I eat here at least twice a week. They have the freshest salads, in house made pastries, great lemonade and delicious bowls and sandwiches! Not to mention the cleanliness of the place! You will not be disappointed. Don't forget to try the breakfast menu too.

Vincent T.

Yelp
Great flavor! Hummus was delicious and the Shwarma. But one star deduction for tables that needed to be wiped down and the employees weren't friendly. They weren't mean or rude, but definitely weren't trying to engage any customers

Ana D.

Yelp
I love this spot! If you're looking for good and quick Mediterranean then this is your spot.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I love the food here! It is alway so fresh. Even if it is busy, the lines move quickly because it is always well staffed. The staff is friendly and willing to answer questions regarding ordering and the food. They will even make suggestions if you ask. This is my new GOTO for lunch. They never disappoint! Thanks AK!

Laura S.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch while working downtown. Simply cannot say enough about the food here. Wonderful, fresh, modern takes on fabulous, traditional Middle Eastern food. Rarely can you find a delicious, fresh, satisfying meal that at the same time feels healthy and doesn't weigh you down. Will stop here every time I am in town and I think I would eat here every day if I worked close by.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Omg!!! This place is amazing. The menu is so unique and healthy and has something for meat eaters or plant based. The staff was so helpful and friendly. I even was greeted by the owners...(lovely couple). I only wish I went downtown more often to try each and every lunch bowl. Servings are very generous so I always have leftovers. Gonna try and go earlier next visit to try their breakfast bowls.

Pat W.

Yelp
My compliments to the "CHEF"!!! I frequented this place before they remodeled and so glad the same chef is here. He is a great cook and Lebanese food has to be just right. He is over and above the best cook and he knocks it out of the park every time!!! I believe his name is chef Dave. I can't wait to come back for lunch again soon. Thanks for a great meal.

Doreen C.

Yelp
After waiting for service at another restaurant and not happening, decided to try AK's since it was nearby and looked very inviting. Glad we did! Loved our falafel bowl and falafel sandwich. The hummus was so creamy and delicious. All the food was, it was fresh and bright tasting. We just had to buy some tahini sauce, hummus and falafel chips to take home. Place was impeccable, right down to the restroom, service was great and the owner was so nice and helpful. For our short stay in Detroit, happy we dined here

Abe M.

Yelp
Very inconsistent with order and portions. . Gave A.K. Multiple chances and they failed each time. 1st time I went, I ordered via Ritual app the Anitta chopped salad. I ordered no bacon, and I paid extra to add cucumbers. They gave me a salad with bacon. Second time; they remade my salad and this time they forgot to add the cucumbers. Although they made a couple of mistakes, their portions were nice for a $13 salad; with that I decided to give them a final try today; when I called I asked to speak to the manager directly and request she oversee my order. This time all the topping were correct but I received 1/4th the amount of chicken I received the previous two orders. For $13 I got a bowl half filled with lettuce with a few pieces of chicken on top. I showed people in my office and they all agreed when they saw my salad that it was poorly made and the protein portion was exceptionally small. I would have been better off getting a full meal anywhere else. I see a lot of opportunity for A.K. and they have the idea right. If they Implement my feedback and use it as a growth opportunity, then I may consider returning back as a customer and update this review. Feel free to email me with any questions barhooma2@gmail.com.
