San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings

"Open for breakfast and lunch, Anja’s is a German cafe in Berkeley with golden potato muffins, macaroni with smoked salmon, and cannellini bean soup. There’s space for a few people inside, but the rose garden in the back (shared with The Butcher’s Son and Chocolaterie) looks like the best space to enjoy a stein of witbier. Google
The eponymous Anja's is a quaint restaurant that focuses on German cuisine with California ingredients. Everything is delicious and lovingly crafted. My husband had the schnitzel sandwich which was golden brown and perfectly seasoned. The smell of golden butter was intoxicating. I had the delicious porridge with coconut and fresh fruit. We took home a stollen which is delightful, toasted with butter! We would 1000% go back!

Google
Absolutely adorable little cafe with a magical back patio and garden. The lady (I assume she's Anja) is super sweet, and this is a hidden gem definitely worth checking out!!

Google
A pure delight. Terrific homemade food that is fresh and filling. I love the rockfish sandwich, which I order open-faced next to a seasonal salad and a fat slice of cake. The coffee is strong and they also serve beer and wine. I can’t wait to try a warm plate, there is schnitzel, kugel, pasta … A little piece of me died when Gaumenkitzel closed, but my heart is healing at Anja’s.

Google
Sweet restaurant, a haven in the middle of crazy downtown Berkeley. Wonderful, warm, welcoming proprietor. The smoked salmon is amazing, baked goods are homemade and tasty. The rose-filled back patio is truly a haven. Bring a book, have lunch or coffee and dessert (or both, like I did), and escape from the world for a bit. I plan to return soon to try more dishes and bring friends!

Google
Came for a quick breakfast and enjoyed smoked salmon open sandwich with coffee then had a delicious poppyseed pie for dessert. Looking forward to coming back and trying other things on the menu! Lovely garden seating in the back and few tables inside. Loved being greeted with “Guten tag” — Made me feel like I’m back in Germany for a moment.

Google
The best German food in Berkeley. Anja is the warmest, kindest, and most caring chef in the world! She and her team turns out pastries that are not too sweet, and her dishes are always sourced locally to be the freshest! I can always count on Anja’s to walk out with a smile :)

Google
The most beautiful outdoor patio in Berkeley. It feels like a private rose garden. The food is always well cooked, made with fresh ingredients, and clearly traditional German food made with love. Lots of good dessert and beer options as well if you just want a treat to sit outside. It’s a good sized menu for such a small kitchen, making me excited to come back already!!!!

Google
This place is the real deal. The food is delicious. It’s clear they use fresh, high end ingredients. The menu is also incredibly creative and thoughtful. And they’re zero waste. They’re definitely one of the good ones. And the ambience is absolutely amazing. Their back patio is a garden oasis in a world of box crates seated on pavement. This place is an absolute standout. One of my new favorites. I’ll definitely be back.

Yelp
This is a tiny place, with only one employee: the owner is the chef, and server, and dishwasher, etc. We thought we'd order the eggs and spinach, but Anja said she didn't have any spinach left, so we shared the chicken and spinach special, which came with potatoes. The chicken was a little overcooked, but ok. The spinach and potatoes were tasty and filling. We also shared the French toast, which was magnificent. Custardy, topped with just a slight dusting of cinnamon sugar, not to be missed. My friend had the chicory coffee; I enjoyed a nonalcoholic Hefeweizen. We sat inside, but there's a nice sunny back patio. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
After reading Berkeleyside's article earlier this month about Anja's, the new cafe named after the chef and owner of the now closed Gaumenkitzel, I put it on my calendar to walk over and check out the food. (I always meant to dine at Gaumenkitzel, but just never made it over.) I neglected to take a pic of the menu posted in the window, but it had breakfast items such as oatmeal, muesli, and I think yogurt & granola parfait. The menu also had different salads and at least one soup. (Some items were marked coming soon. Today was their opening day.) I make myself granola & yogurt at home, and wasn't in the mood for a salad, but some pastries inside caught my eye before I could walk on. I think it was Anja's husband who warmly greeted me, and offered me samples when I was trying to decide on a pastry. I tried a sample of their almond cookie, which I have a weakness for in general, and it was incredibly soft, and definitely a winner. I ended up getting the "Vanilla-Cinnamon Almond Cookie" ($3.50), and "Egg & Golden Potato Muffin" ($5). (The muffin is essentially a sizable quiche bite. They had some with gruyere and one with cheddar.) There were also two types of bar cookies in the case, apple and poppy seed. The space had a some seats in the front, offering a nice spot to enjoy a light lunch. Anja made eye contact with me from her work spot at a food counter in the open kitchen and wished me a happy Tuesday. She was very warm and welcoming. I'll definitely be back to try more of their pastries, and I'll bring friends next time!

Yelp
We were walking on University in Berkeley today and almost passed Anja's. We were heading to lunch at another place but stopped to check the menu. Seeing that it was German food (with German draft beer), we went in and were pleased to find that the owner/chef was formerly of Gaumenkitzel, one of our favorite restaurants which has since closed. As they had outdoor seating in the back (and draft REAL German beer) we decided to make it our lunch destination. The food was excellent as expected, as was the beer. We will be back again and again and again!

Yelp

Yelp
Cute little German inspired cafe that recent took over the soup/sandwich spot next to Rose Pizza on University. Friendly owner at the front to take your order while she's setting out the yummy looking pastries. We had the curry wurst, bay shrimp salad and the poppy seed strudel and everything was delicious! The salad didn't look like much when it arrived at the table, but was bright, punchy, and flavorful. The currywurst was comforting, familiar, and filling, and though I have not been to Germany, it was exactly what I would imagine curry wurst to be. We were almost done devouring the strudel before I had a chance to snap a photo which is always a good sign. we grabbed an extra piece to go. + Has great outdoor patio seating in the back among rose bushes. Can't wait to come back and try more items.

Yelp
Hidden gem, close to downtown. Tried the curry sausage, which was quite authentic, just like in Germany. Place looks small from outside, however features a huge (dog-friendly!) beer garden ("Biergarten") in the back. Friendly service, too.

Yelp
Have a little taste of Europe on University Avenue. We popped in for lunch and enjoyed a bean soup, a gluten-free egg and potato tart and one of their chicken entrees. They share a back garden patio with several nearby eateries so we were able to have our dog with us.

Yelp
This place is impeccable. Quality, wholesome, healthy food, a beautiful, clean, and organized environment, warm and friendly service.

Yelp
Cute space with a rose garden out back. Tasty food and drinks, that are clean, minimally processed, and homemade. Owners and staff are really nice.

Yelp
Great food and amazing desserts! Love the venue with tables out back. Service was great. Had the currywurst which was very good and will be back for more stollen before the holidays are over!

Yelp
Wonderful, food reflective of northern Germany. Especially appreciate the knowledge of serving organic, pastured, wild, and sprouted products. Tasty German breakfast pastries (low sugar) you won't find anywhere else. Vielen Dank fur das gesunde, leckere Essen.

Adrian F.

Yelp
Very friendly service. The food was excellent with solid and interesting choices. There are daily items not mentioned in the on-line menu so you can indulge your sweet tooth or go for savory tasty salads, or muffins. I went for the smoked salmon, salad and muffin combination. Everything is very fresh. We ate in the delightful, quiet rose garden behind the cafe. My wife said her coffee was very flavorful and she appreciated it being served in a mug instead of a paper cup. We plan to bring friends next time who drink because they will enjoy exploring the interesting German and Austrian wine selection.

Yelp
Sweet indoor space with a great back area within a rose garden. The coffee and food are terrific and an amazing value. I appreciate the mini-muffin option as a way to taste their terrific baked goods ( made on site!). The people working there are friendly and the food came out freshly cooked and hot.

Yelp
Super cute German cafe! Had the house salad with goat cheese & it was really good, the pastries are delightful as well. The owner is very kind and friendly & I will definitely be going here regularly.

Yelp
Delicious home made style food. Friendly service. The rose garden patioisa treat. Recommend strongly.

Yelp
Oh my. We have waited for Anja to come back into our lives, and it was worth the wait. My husband and I ordered our dinner menu (for two nights -- it lasts that long when you are old!), ready for us cold (as we wished) close to closing. Completely amazingly delicious chicken and fish dishes, beautifully prepared, with adjustments for the dietary needs of my husband, lovingly done by Anja. And, lo and behold! The carrot thyme salad side. Yum. We can't wait to join at the rose garden behind! Our daughter works in the area and loves the food and the space. Our dietary needs (old, right?) mean we can't indulge the amazing baked goods -- well, unless there's stollen around Christmas time. I want to add that Anja and Kai were our saviors during the pandemic with their amazing offerings from Gaumenkitzel. We will always be grateful not only for the food but also the warmth and kindness, and can't wait to savor again.

Elaine F.

Yelp
Excellent food!! Excellent service!! Very cozy! Beautiful rose garden! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Delicious streusel and a wonderful cup of chicory "coffee". Other items on the menu look enticing Don't miss the phenomenal rose garden seating in the back. Anna is a lovely host who is very pleasant and welcoming. Homemade jams and canned items create a warm and cozy environment.
