Where to Eat, Drink, and Relax on East 28th’s Restaurant Row

"This old-school neighborhood pub spills out into the street’s pedestrian courtyard on sunny weekends for families to enjoy blue cheese and fig burgers, mahi mahi tacos, and weekend brunch classics. The spot also works for dates and friend groups to catch up over spicy watermelon margaritas, frozen mojitos, and shareable appetizers like crimini mushroom toasts, rosemary duck fat fries, and cauliflower elotes." - Thom Hilton, Nick Woo

Google
Love this spot. Go here for brunch or dinner a couple times a month. Staff is awesome, food is great, drinks are great (both beer from Gorges, and cocktails). All around great spot. Lots of patio seating for nice days, some inside for cold ones. They just updated their menues too so lots of new stuff to try.

Initially, I didn't like ordering thru my phone im a bit old school. But it saved time and service was super fast. The bloody marys were great and the food was so good our table was silent. Yummy. Fully loved it.

Google
Came here for happy hour. Great idea!!! Well drinks are $5, Caesar salad is $5, cauliflower elote is $5!!! And the portions were HUGE!!!! Would definitely return here any day!!!

Hannah Mountford

Google
Got the burger and it was huge and delicious. Not a big menu but all the food was great. They customize orders and everything is ordered through the app. Reasonably priced and love the outdoor seating.

Google
I was staying in the area for a work trip and came here 4 times in a week. The food was great the service was excellent. Not only did I find it cozy, but the staff members that varied from each visit were extra friendly. It was never really packed which in this neighborhood seemed odd. The fish fry was one of the best I have ever had. They also carry a great beer selection including Coaltion's 2 Flowers. Thanks Travis and all your staff.

Google
A blackend chicken club that w/ flavors that will make your tastebuds do the tango! Featurimg tasty perfect bacon. Tip get theire fry sauce and theire kiwi jalapeno hot sauce ( not spicy silly tany tantalizing!!) The mushroom barley stee is at least 2 meals* get the bowl for $7 u can't beat it anywhere!!!! Plus happy hour burger is hooked up!!! So worth it. Great drinks! The only thing reason I don't give it 5 stars is the salad on happy hour $6 small nothong to it and not organic. Service is great!!! Thid is a hidden gem!

Google
Get the nachos and a slushy. You can also order from Gorges brewery across the street from the convenience of your picnic table. The whole street is blocked off with spacious seating. The servers are super nice.

Google
Great brunch experience especially for large groups! You pay with the QR code which makes it easy to split bills and pay/leave whenever you’re ready. Food was amazing and quick to be brought out. Brunch drinks were also delicious. Highly recommend the pink lady and ankeny coffee. Would definitely come back again to try the other brunch options! Plenty of space to sit indoors on a rainy day.

Yelp
The food was good - a burger and a mushroom melt, both with fries. There was only one wait staff for all of outside and it was a nice day. So when we ordered a second beer, we waited a half hour. It has to come from across the street or something. I think the order wasn't entered. Mistakes happen - but some kind of acknowledgement, such as, I'm so sorry you had to wait so long, that beer is gratis! would have been appropriate. But in typical Portland customer service style, we received a puzzled expression, as if a half hour to deliver one beer is normal. A brief chat at the next staff meeting could fix this :)

Yelp
To owner: I mention in my review each time I've been here I've been the only person inside or outside or one other party on the patio max. Maybe train your staff to offer service when it's totally dead like it's been each time I've been here. I did say the food is good I just feel draft cocktails shouldn't be 12 dollars (I know you say who cares but people do care how their cocktails are made) and 15 dollars for 3 tacos with not much carnitas in them is overpriced. I've lived in multiple much bigger cities with much more Mexican food than PDX and that's a bit much for what you get here. I do like the carnitas tho. Yelp is a place not just to vent but give genuine feedback based on your dining experience and sad to say the 3 times I've been here the experience was not great hence my honest review.

Yelp
We stopped in on Saturday night because everything else in the neighborhood we wanted to go to had like a two hour wait. I got the fig burger and upgraded to rosemary and duck fat fries. I have no regrets. It was a solid burger and they didn't skimp on the bacon. There was a pretty good sized group ahead of us so I was expecting a long wait for food but it all came out pretty quickly. It was a pretty chill and laid back vibe, not overly loud, we could hold a conversation, but not dead either. I would definitely be willing to come back. The fries were good but honestly a little overly greasy. But what did I expect ordering duck fat? I think they could've used a bit more salt.

Yelp
Great spot for a post work beer. Can't beat a great IPA for $6.50 these days. Cool vibe and good service.
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Cool spot serving up good burgers, cocktails, and Gorges brews. The street they're on, the rainbow road, is closed to cars and creates a large and cool outdoor dining area. Super fun vibes, and a popular bike through area. They also have seating inside both on the main floor and upstairs. I've been here a couple times when visiting Portland and have enjoyed it each visit. I've had a different burger/sandwich and cocktail each time I've come and have liked everything I've had. Food and drink menus aren't too expansive, but I like that they have some more unique burgers along with the more traditional one, and some fun sides. They serve up beer from Gorges across the street. You order at Ankeny, and they bring it over from Gorges, pretty cool concept, unsure if they do it on rainy days too.

Yelp
Adorable public house in a cute area of Portland (that would cringe, I'm sure, with both adjectives I just used). Ordering process is a bit harried but the staff are wonderful and the food is delivered perfectly, so it doesn't really matter. Food and drinks are on point and I love the open indoor-outdoor concept that seems to celebrate the summer.

Yelp
The fries were phenomenal. Detailed breakdown below: **Service, 5/5** Our waitress was really sweet and did a fantastic job of answering all my questions. I ordered on my phone and wanted to replace the greens in my BLT with shredded lettuce, but she also went to ask the chef what options I'd have for substitutions. **Decor & cleanliness, 5/5** Dark and moody, but plenty of seating with additional room upstairs if you want to watch games. **Price & portion, 5/5** For the portion size and quality of the food, I definitely thought it was worth it. **Presentation, 5/5** The presentation was cute as well as practical. The fries came in a wire basket which allowed them to vent and not get soggy. **Taste, 5/5** I got a BLT and upgraded to rosemary fries. The BLT had such flavorful, crispy bread that was absolutely packed with filling and held up well. And OMG the fries!! SO crispy, fantastic aromatic rosemary flavor, and perfectly seasoned. These might've been some of the best fries I've ever had. **Other notes** They have a collaboration with a nearby brewery -- when we got a beer flight, we literally saw a staff member walk across the street to pick up the beers. Gender-neutral bathroom was very clean and well maintained.

Yelp
Mixed review here. Food was kind of mediocre. The fries were good but the burger was cold, fell apart that easy, and simply not that amazing. As a bar or place to hang out though, I enjoyed it. Outdoor tables in the sun, TV inside. Would come back for drinks. Probably not food. Food also takes a long time (wasn't even busy).

Yelp
This place looked great at first. Dog friendly, outside seating, etc. QR code to order and pay for everything. The problem is, they were out of half of the menu: French fries, chicken strips, grilled cheese, eggs... then the real tragedy: 3 tacos for $17. No sides even. And if you want carnitas? $5 up charge. That's $22 for 3 ala cart tacos. Insanity.... (Fyi only sides avail were coleslaw and kale salad). I have a hard time spending $$ at this price point for so little service or food. On another note, this drink was good.

Yelp
Really poor service last night. I placed an online order at 6pm for 7pm for pick up. At 7:05 or 7:10 I arrived. They were moderately busy. I waited for the guy to deliver food, He had ZERO eye contact with me by the way. I initiated, "hey hi I'm here for a to go order" He replied, "oh, you're Lisa? Well that order window online was supposed to be shut down bc we were getting busy. Don't know how you got it through. It's going to be about 5 or 10 more minutes. 7:23 the kitchen brings it out and sets it on the stand. He sees it, keeps making a drink, passes me and I stop him to say, "this for me, right:?" He looks, "oh yeah, there are some bags there or you can wait a minute and I can put them in there for you, or you can". I didn't wait and bagged my own food and out the door I went. It will likely be a long long long time before I go there again, if ever

Yelp
I likely would not have found this place on my own. I am not in this area often and this is a true hidden gem - especially the amount of space they have between the inside and outside. We took over the outer patio area for my friend's birthday gathering and it holds quite a crowd with a very open fee yet not open to the street and tucked back. I was planned to just drop by but then I met a bunch of fabulous people, was bought a drink - how can I refuse. I had their Pretty in Pink which they normally make with gin. This was vodka with Elderflower liquor, grapefruit juice and sparkling rose.... Orange rind - delicious! Here's the thing Portland bars - what is with the gin craze? I can't be mad at it - I just wonder what happened during lock down that everyone came out of the gate drinking gin... Sorry kids but I am a vodka gal and with that said ... the Pretty in Pink is delicious with vodka but probably delicious with gin too. Their food looked pretty great but I had just eaten so I will have to go back since their menu looks pretty great. This is a happening part of town so fair warning about the parking situation - maybe you could bike or ride a thing.

Yelp
I'm pretty indifferent about this place. The style is very independent and help-yourself. My friend and I seated ourselves and viewed the virtual menu. It wasn't busy, but it was somehow still loud and it took some time before we were greeted. After viewing the limited menu and being told there was a strict no substitutions policy (my friend had a food allergy that they could not accommodate) we opted to leave before ordering. We found a restaurant that was a little more flexible a few blocks down. If you're looking for a casual dining spot, this could be an option. It wasn't horrible and the staff members weren't rude, but it felt a little detached and they were unable to meet our fairly low-maintenance needs, so I can't say I'm a fan.

Taylor H.

Yelp
I really want to love this place. The location and ease of outdoor seating are ideal. There are limited food choices and everything is overpriced. Like, minimally topped nachos with two small tablespoons of dried out pulled pork cost $17. If there were more options with better quality or lower prices, it'd be a 5 star place. Here's to hoping they make some adjustments cuz I'd really like to make this a regular spot. Also, please don't put coffee in glass... it's chic, but hot and cumbersome.

Sophie L.

Yelp
Blackberry Frozen Margaritas 100/10. Gluten free buns and options! Great outdoor seating!
google avatar

Pratima M.

Yelp
A cute neighborhood spot on Rainbow Road in Laurelhurst. They have the COVID experience down to a tee -- the tables are spaced apart and you order via your phone by scanning a QR code. They have a wide selection of pub foods and beers. I also loved the option for a half-pint as well! We got the Cauliflower Elotes to share which were fairly tasty! The pieces with the sauce tasted much more flavorful than the others, which could be a tad bland, but overall the dish is great to share. I got the North Zest IPA and really liked it -- wasn't too bitter but still had the IPA feel that I enjoyed. Overall, a super cute bar-restaurant that's worth the visit if you're in the neighborhood!

Yelp
If you're going for just drinks, this place is perfect. You choose a table, order via a QR code, and drinks are brought out within 10-15 min. We made the mistake of ordering food. I'm assuming they're under staffed, but it seems like they also may have too many tables? Essentially every table outside, they serve. Our food took an hour to get to us. We ordered 2 things. And it was cold. Asked if they could just heat it up, because I get it. Understaffed. Rush of people. Whatever, no big. Then they brought it out, and the plate it was on was hot, but the food was not lol. Not sure. Good all around vibe, but not great on the food front. Staff is kind though.
google avatar

Cindy I.

Yelp
Solid flavorful burger and soft bun. I actually liked the home fries when normally they are not my thing. Travelled well 10-15 min home. Nice outdoor seating when the weather gets better. They closed off the street to cars. Didn't try any drinks since we got it to go.
google avatar

Yelp
So yum! House salad was filled with flavor. We paired with A-Z sparkling rose and a San Juan peach rose hard seltzer. I recommend!
google avatar

Erika R.

Yelp
Food is delicious, but service is bad, my hamburger was cold and you need to wait long time for food

Yelp
Ankeny Tap & Table has perfected the no contact Covid experience. With plenty of tables distanced out on the closed off rainbow street, you just sit, scan the QR code and order from your phone. You can get drinks and food from Ankeny Tap & Table, while beer comes out from Gorges Beer. I hope they keep this process in the future, because it's so much easier than crowding around a bar or trying to list off a long order to a server. I love it. My group got several cocktails (they have a slushee cocktail too!). We also got plates of food to share, including fries, a bomb kale caesar, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Food was good, drinks were good and the staff bring our orders were pretty friendly. I'll be back!
google avatar

Cheryl M.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place. - The staff is so sweet and helpful. - They have a covered outside seating area. No heaters but we won't need them much longer. - My dog loves it here. He usually meets a new friend. - They know how to make kale actually taste good. Like, ridiculous good. I've tried to recreate at home but it still tastes like lawn clippings. - omg the cauliflower bites. Amazing. I'm moving out of the area but this will be a go to when I visit.

Yelp
I live right down the street and love having this spot so close. Everyone is very nice and the food and drinks are great. Highly recc!

Yelp
BRUNCH! Hands down best breakfast sandwich in Portland. The Brekky Sammy is godly. 10/10 I haven't tried anything else on the brunch menu because this scrumptious sandwich lures me back into her arms every time. Excellent vibes on rainbow road. Can't go wrong grabbing brunch here on the weekend.
google avatar

Jen N.

Yelp
My bf demanded that I gave 5 stars! The lamb burger really stood out in the menu, so we had to try it. It had arugula and goat cheese, yum! The fries were thinner and crispy too, double yum! The blueberry fields forever was a refreshing cocktail! They have a wide selection of cocktails and drinks. Their beers are from Gorges, so if you order a beer, someone from the brewery across the street will bring it out to you. Also very friendly staff from both!
google avatar

Nate W.

Yelp
Such a cute outdoor seating area. You pick a table and order from your phone. Delicious food that isn't too heavy. The chicken tacos and Brussels sprouts were fantastic.
google avatar

Jason Y.

Yelp
Alright to be honest I was going to Screen door as a recommendation, when I saw the crowd outside i immediately said screw that and looked around, Ankeny came up. Ohh my.... the best Bloody Mary I've had in along time. A bit spicy for most but the consistency and flavor were on point. I told Corey our bartender/waiter this and he gave me the opportunity to try his jerk and Chile verde. Very unique in a good way. I had the Pork Pozole for breakfast and that was incredible. Then the $2 Rainier to top it off. Great service great food, no complaints on praise. Maybe Screen Door May come back on the list...
google avatar

Tevvy H.

Yelp
Outdoor tables amazing service local beer maybe the best fries I've ever had we will be back!
google avatar

H G.

Yelp
Really nice people, fun service w the beers coming direct from the brewery next door. Duck fat fries were pretty epic, and my wife got the romesco chicken sandwich that was very tasty. We'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to watch a playoff basketball game while we were visiting the area. We saw on Yelp that they had a TV, but when we arrived we found out that it was upstairs in an area they weren't using at the time. Cory (sp?) very graciously showed us upstairs and handed us the remote to watch the game, with sound! Everyone else was just as friendly. The beers and drinks were well priced and delicious.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
We had our little "holiday happy hour" here before Christmas. It was great and the drinks were even better.
google avatar

Jillian E.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick bite, loved the QR code option to order since I'm an introvert and sometimes dread the thought of talking to people lol. Portions were huge, we could barely get to half of it! Also liked the outside seating option, since it was a nice day. The location is in a nice quiet area as well.
google avatar

Gerald M.

Yelp
This an amazing place for breakfast! The portions are large but the quality is also amazing! We ordered the breakfast Sammy, eggs benedict and biscuits n gravy. All of these dishes came with breakfast potatoes. I could eat their breakfast potatoes all day as they are made perfectly! They are fresh, crispy and full of great seasoning. The Eggs Benedict are perfectly cooked and I love the high quality canadian bacon on them. The breakfast Sammy is without a doubt one of the very best breakfast sandwiches I've ever tasted. There are so many amazing flavors but I really loved the bacon, arugula and cheddar especially. They also use a fantastic sourdough bread that is deliciously crispy. The Mimosa is outstanding as they used fresh squeezed orange juice. I also really enjoyed the house made blackberry sage soda. The biscuits and gravy rank as one of my top choices as the biscuits are clearly homemade and the gravy is phenomenal with exciting flavors in addition to very high quality sausage. The environment was incredibly relaxing as they have a wonderful and large outdoor seating patio. Ordering was a breeze, just scan the QR code for the online Ordering process and the server will bring out whatever was ordered. It was a very convenient and easy to use system and you can even keep your tab open in case you want to order more before closing your tab. The service was awesome. Kendra was so friendly and welcoming she really was super nice and made our experience very memorable and wonderful. The food and ambience here is fantastic and we will definitely recommend this perfect place for some amazing food!
google avatar

Sonny S.

Yelp
Come hang out on the rainbow road and enjoy the ambiance. Lots of outdoor tables, twinkle lights. Had the kale chicken Cesar, it was great! Good service, loved coming here on a warm spring evening.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
The Goose across the street was packed, but this place provided a quiet vibe. The "Figgy Pudding" beer was sweet as molasses, I really enjoyed it. Four people for $30, not bad.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
our new favorite neighborhood joint. breakfast sammy fantastic, everything else great. Dinner was great too
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
This place was amazing! Their cauliflower elote is the best appetizer. The cauliflower is cooked to a perfect crisp and then combined with their sauce and pickled red onions. I also really loved the burger and fries too. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Andie J.

Yelp
Wow. What a great spot!Tiny little spot but boy was it impressive! Corey was our waiter and he was fantastic! Great attitude and took the time to not only chat with us but interact with every table in the place- so personable! Awesome happy hour deals. Ankeny burger is definitely is my top five best burgers I've ever had. Cook just right. Delish. But what really took the show was the Cauliflower "Elote!" Explosions of flavor. I could have eaten my body weight of just the cauliflower elote. Good beers on tap. Go here people!!!
google avatar

Khrystine C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I randomly stumbled upon this place on yelp while searching for food in the area. I was hoping to try the cauliflower elotes, but I didn't realize they only had brunch offerings on the weekend. I personally didn't mind, but I think my boyfriend was brunched out.. I had the Ankeny Hash which was basically eggs over bacon and vegetables and toast. I was delightfully surprised by how much I loved my dish! I got my eggs scrambled and they were perfectly cooked! I like mine slightly runny, by the way. I think my favorite part of the dish was the cauliflower. I believe it was roasted? Maybe in balsamic? I'm not sure, but whatever they did to it, was amazing! I should've just asked for all cauliflower.
google avatar

Yelp
Coalition Two Flowers IPA is infused with cannabiod CBD oil and a cold one is thirst quenching! Brew with weed without the munchie craving, how cool is that? Very! This brew puts the R---E---L---A---X in the word relax. It's a tasty bitter and floral West Coast citrus style IPA on a rotating tap list that really got my attention. The pub is a hole in the wall, in a good way, with the rollup door in the up position. Take a look inside all on the way back past the comfy tables with in-tight atmosphere to the bar at the end and everything therein invites you to come on in and relax. Get the cannabiod brew! Whew good! There are sidewalk tables and a nice new custom patio to chill out on. The place has a very cool vibe worth checking it out again. The potato bravos at happy hour were tasty in a zesty tangy sauce.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Great feed and take COVID extremely serious. All ordering is done from a QR code from your table outside. Staff is friendly and attentive. Can't wait to check this place out when under nor Al circumstances. P.s. they have boozy slushees too!
google avatar

Thy T.

Yelp
We came for brunch on Sunday and was happy that we didn't have to wait in line for food. We sat outside in the patio which the weather was nice. For starters, we had churros with the caramel sauce. The sauce was good! We also had a pitcher of mimosa which was neat because they brought out a bottle of bruit and OJ. Then you mix it accordingly to your taste. I had the filet mignon with eggs and that was fulfilled me. The meat was soft and juicy. I like the potatoes too. I wasn't a huge fan of the horsey sauce but if you do like horseradish, that sauce is for you. Our waiter was super helpful and nice. We had a good time catching up here and enjoyed our meals. Come check out the restaurant if you're in the area!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
The food is good but the service is sauce. For example tonight I waited 45 minutes for my food. There's no telling how long you'll wait
google avatar

Victor B.

Yelp
I've been coming here since before the pandemic. I love what they have done with the outdoor seating and ordering via QR code. I've had such a positive experience with the food, drinks and service. Thanks for su ch a great space with tasty food and drinks!
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
I don't usually seek out dog-friendly restaurants but I had a visitor in town who had their dog with them and this option popped up on yelp. This place has nice outdoor seating both along the front of the restaurant and to the left a patio with four picnic tables. The brunch menu had about 3-4 items I wanted to try (so I guess I'll be back) but I went with my usual of eggs Benedict or called saison Benedict on the menu. I would say their potatoes could use a little more flavor but other than that the meal was delicious. The service was great! Worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I love that you can order from your table. The food is great. We got chicken nachos (to die for), cauliflower elote with carnitas , Brussels sprouts and chicken sandwich. Everything was delish. They have a very large drink menu which caters to all tastes. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Angela Z.

Yelp
Delicious and really really good service! If you like cauliflower get the elotes, the burgers were very good! Drinks were also very good! 5 stars for sure for us!

Jason H.

Yelp
Great place!! Awesome food! Stopped here for brunch. Wonderful Biscuits & Gravy! Top notch!! Great service too. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Stopped in for a few pints and a great lunch. We shared a Spicy chicken sando, mc n cheese and carnitas tacos. Service was nice, food tasted great!
google avatar

Kendall D.

Yelp
Honestly just wasn't extremely impressed with any of the food, but it's a pretty standard little bar/restaurant. The service was attentive, thoughtful, and super friendly. The beer options were pretty good. The mac and cheese was labeled as poblano so maybe we should have known but it had a strong pepper/spicy flavor that took away from the cheeziness. The burger was a pretty basic and solid burger! Fries were mostly on the squishier side and just ok. The nachos with carnitas came as a huge mountain and were pretty good! No complaints other than how full I was at the end of the meal (maybe that's what I get for ordering an app as a meal, but it was the smaller size!).
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
Wow the service and food was so amazing. Great atmosphere and very welcoming feel. I really recommend this place, great drink options and the food was so absolutely amazing. My friend Deb and I will for sure be back.
