Yelp
Anko in Koreatown, Los Angeles, is a delightful destination for anyone with a sweet tooth, particularly those who appreciate the art of Asian desserts. The café garnered high praise for its shaved ice, known as "bingsoo" in Korean, which is definitely a standout in its menu.
The cafe was started by a humble Korean woman who used to be a server at a restaurant and saved up to open this cafe. This is a prime example of someone who worked diligently, took a chance to open their own business, and succeeded. I highly recommend you consider visiting this family-owned business for the following, but not limited to, reasons:
The Injeolmi Bingsoo, featuring a soft, snow-like texture with a generous dusting of powder on top and inside, has always been one of my favorites. Its unique preparation ensures a consistent flavor in every spoonful. 5/5.
Another must-try is the Strawberry Bingsoo, praised for its authenticity and the use of real strawberries, offering a fresh and natural taste. This dish is carefully layered, ensuring the strawberry flavor is present throughout the shaved ice rather than just on the surface. Unlike other bingsoo cafes in LA, Anko is the most generous with its portions. 4.5/5.
The Mango Bingsoo is another notable mention, particularly for its balance between icy and snowy textures. The layering technique used in Anko's bingsoo preparation ensures a consistent distribution of mango, offering a delightful taste in every bite. *ONLY* order this when it's in season. This goes to all cafes that offer mango on- and off-season. 4/5.
Besides bingsoo, Anko's taiyaki (붕어빵) is also highly recommended. It's definitely one of the better taiyakis I've had in LA, as it stands out for its flavor and texture, making it a must-try item. Sometimes portions can be a miss, with hardly any filling, but usually, it meets expectations! 4.5/5.
In terms of ambiance, the café tends to be lively, especially on weekend evenings. This bustling atmosphere, while energetic, can also make the space a bit loud. However, this vibrancy is part of the charm of Anko, contributing to its authentic Koreatown experience. It reminds me of the bingsoo places I've visited in Seoul - simple, small, but homey. 5/5,
The service at Anko is careful attention to detail, especially in preparing orders. While there may be a wait, especially for their popular bingsoo, the quality, and care in each order, make it worth the time and far better than other places nearby. 5/5.
