The 38 Essential Milwaukee Restaurants

"Anodyne continues to quietly fine-tune small batch single-source roasts in the quest to become the ideal neighborhood cafe with the perfect pour. Stockpile beans and homebrew accouterments, catch a show at the Bruce Street roastery, sip a nitro-line cold brew (arguably the most potent and heat-beating non-alcoholic beverage in town), or grab a wood fire-kissed Neapolitan pie out of the Stefano oven at the bustling Bay View outpost." - Todd Lazarski

Google
Well this was hands down the best cup of coffee that I’ve had while visiting Milwaukee, IL. I had the drip coffee Brazil de Finca and the notes hit my tongue so smoothly. Definitely check out this location when in the area. The ambiance is so inviting I wish I had time to just sit down and enjoy the art work.

Google
Stopped by Anodyne last week, I do like their roast but havent been to one location before. Service normal not the friendliest but ok. The turtle mocha was good but the nutty coldbrew was too watery. Probably going to stick with using their coffee at home.

Leah Scheurer

Google
Just don’t order a breakfast sandwich. Nice place and staff but the breakfast sandwiches are microwaved. At first it was too scalding to hold but when I did take a bite, the middle was icey and bacon was raw. My sister’s sandwich was the same. Not one to typically write reviews but for $10 that was really disappointing. As far as drinks, honey bee and bee sting were a bit too sweet for my liking but that’s on me.

Google
The sausage (I had w/out egg and cheese) is actual sausage and comes in something like an English muffin but better. Food/Staff=awesome.

Lisa Jones

Google
my sesame bagel was great, perfectly toasted but k think it's cheap of them to offer EITHER butter or cream cheese. really? one tiny butter schmear will break your budget? the creme cheese was especially delicious but i had to spread it on dry bagel. meh. also the egg sandwiches are overpriced because they're served on English muffins. not worth $12. geez. also no paper in printer, so no receipt. overpriced but I still prefer it to Starbucks because I prefer to support local biz.

Google
We chose their Frosty and Half Caff Mocha both iced, and they were exceptional. It's a very cute space, and the drinks were delightful. Definitely will go back.

Google
Best coffee in town, been using their beans for espresso and coffee for over a decade. Their coffee drinks are well made, service is always good. Really good cold brew and SPORTea on a tapper. Great atmosphere if you hang around and want to get some reading or work done.

Jiri Anderko

Google
Had a great time visiting the Bayview Anodyne. Coffee was good as were the everything bagels. Very inviting atmosphere and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend this location and plan on going back in the future.

Yelp
Anodyne is one of the best coffee shops in Bay View. It's light and bright with a relaxing playlist and friendly staff. There's plenty of seating and it's a great place to chat with friends, get some work done, or grab a copy of a local publication to browse as you sip your beverage. The beverage menu is large and varied. The honeybee latte is delicious, as is the iced chai (but you can't exactly mess that up). Their bakery selection is a bit smaller than other area shops, but the deliciousness makes up for it. While the blueberry muffin is a classic, I'd recommend the cinnamon chip scone. It's perfect for people who want a little sweetness with their beverage, but not too much sweetness. You'll really feel the warm, spiced cinnamon flavor. As for the price, you'll be paying a little bit more than other nearby national or local chain franchises. But, in my opinion, it's worth it.

Yelp
We had an excellent cappuccino in our quick jaunt through Milwaukee proper. An excellent cup...

Yelp
This is a great place to come and read or have a nice chat. The coffee is always great and the staff are always friendly.

Yelp
Favorite coffee shop, my go to matcha spot! What I love about anodyne is that you can have coffee in the morning while working and stay for dinner with some of ghee best wood fired pizza! It's a local favorite which great service always.

Yelp
Love this place. Not sure why you changed the aesthetic of the place though (firewood) it had a warm ambience. Only thing I'd suggest is drinks that are served hot or cold to put a H or C or H/C on the board.

Yelp
This is a great coffee shop. Good music, comfortable seating, delicious coffee and pizza. The baristas are friendly and helpful. They also serve beer and wine! What else could you want?

Yelp
Made a road trip to Milwaukee before a Bucks game, and got a pregame meal here. A coffee shop that makes pizza is definitely a unique combo. Ordered 2 pizzas over the phone and was ready within 25 minutes. Upon arriving, I asked for a coffee recommendation and got the Maple Pie Syrup Latte, one of their seasonal drinks. The latte was amazing. Definitely can taste the maple in the latte, but it wasn't overpowering sweet. It was good. The pizza was superb, both of em. The Jimmy Mac is a unique one for sure, pizza with no cheese, but it was good with quality ingredients. The Southside salami was a solid second pizza option. Service overall was great. Everything was prepared promptly and friendly when asking for recommendations. It does have your typical coffee shop atmosphere. Free street parking too. Would definitely recommend for those in the Milwaukee area if you want pizza and coffee at the same time!

Yelp
Best iced mocha I've had to date and made the way I asked it to be. Pleasant staff, great coffee shop environment.

Yelp
The service is amazing always great employees. but I think they should start making their pizza and salads before 4pm. Otherwise they have amazing food and drinks I recommend this spot for tourists in Milwaukee.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this location for doing work or hanging out! It has great lighting and plenty of seats. On top of coffee, they serve food and pastries as well.

Yelp
Great setting. Attentive staff. Outstanding product. Pastry, coffee, tasty stuff. Highly recommended

Yelp
What a delicious cortado today over here at Anodyne. I got mine with soy and lately at another Cafe I frequent they have been burning the milk. It sure was yummy to have the soy creamy and the right texture. High five to the barista. It's a cute spot and the coffee is fresh roasted and done right. They have indoor seating and a cute bar. Next time I'm trying the pizza. It's a concept I never imagined but usually after coffee and Journaling I leave to grab food now I can do both in one cozy spot.

Alex W.

Yelp
Normally Anodyne is on point but today at the Walker's Point location it was terrible. Ordered 2 lattes to go and the milk was spoiled. Seriously, that is inexcusable for a place like this. I'm not a fan of Starbucks so I prefer to go to local places like this. Very disappointing.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Coffees are good but pizza is spotty. Tonight I had a feta and lamb Greek pizza, that was horrible! Lamb was burned, there was no cheese, no mint, and no sauce, it was dry. Think again about trying their special pizzas. This isn't the first time I was disappointed. Does anybody from the restaurant try them before they sell them?

Yelp
Ohh. My. Gaud. Five frigging stars no problem, no question. Food was great. Customer service was great. Vibe was great. Prices were cool. I can't think of a single criticism. Okay, yeah. The bathroom was cold. Whooptie doo. I lived. They went out of their way to make a drink that isn't exactly listed on the menu. And they didn't get all stressed out about it. Yeah, sure. We can do that. Cool. They carry Rishi tea and have a big selection. Legit, I was humming and singing along to the music. It was a cool 80's vibe, very chill. Starship, Wham...ahh my youth. I wanted to ask what station it might have been but didn't knowing that I'd immediately be adding ten years to my age and I'd be required to get a Vera Bradley purse and a mini van. Ohh, an the jeans with white stitching and sequins and bling on the butt pockets. On Mondays the appetizers are a $1 off. These crostini are super worth it even if it's not a Monday. The garlic was my favorite! There is table and chair seating and a counter that abuts a window looking out onto the sidewalk. I am envious of their wiggly succulents in the corner of the counter. The pizza was really, really good! An incredibly fresh and bright tomato flavor. There is a bottle of olive oil, the good olive oil, that I dipped the crust into. The desserts here are from The Cake Lady. Do you know her? The baked goods are money! Usually, I can take or leave cake. Because I love pie. But this cake was complex, flavorful and full of moisture. I don't much care for frosting because it's so sweet. But with this cake I ate an entire fork full of just frosting. Yep. A fork full of frosting. I love that you can sit in front of the window and watch the world go by. It's an introvert's jam. They have tables and chairs on an outdoor patio, I'm looking forward to sitting outside and watching the world go by. After winter. Thank you Anodyne, I left full and very relaxed.

Yelp
Really nice location, conveniently along KK near Outpost Coop. A good spot to stay & hang out. The inside of the café is welcoming & comfortable, down to the professional, polite staff.

Yelp
I found out about Anodyne when the Stoughton Coffee Break Festival was in town this summer. I was in love when I sipped their Midnight Oil Blend. So when I was in town, I decided to check out their nearest location (I believe four came up on the map, but I could be wrong.) Super neat environment, none of the stuck up Starbucks crowd you might instantly think of when you think of a coffee shop. I saw they make pizza, though I didn't catch when they bake it. This time, I tried an Iced Red Eye with an extra shot of espresso. Whoa. I've never had a sour and bitter coffee, but something about it was unlike anything I've ever had, and would most definitely try it again next time I go. Definitely my new go-to for coffee. Too bad I have to order their coffee online, but it's worth the wait.

Yelp
Anodyne Cafe was my first indie cafe chain to visit after I landed at Mitchell International in Milwaukee (2/16/20). I liked the atmosphere and vibe. Folks there were totally laid back, no snotty hipster nonsense which I greatly appreciated. Very personable baristas. Tasty 8 oz mocha. Wished I could have had one of their hand tossed pizzas, smelled so good inside that my grumbling stomach started to protest. But alas, my MKE host had made dinner reservations for us elsewhere.

Yelp
If you want great vibes, friendly people and great breakfast/lunch spot, you have to come here! I've had their iced coffee, chai turmeric latte and their cake and it was all spectacular! This location is great with a trendy feel to it and great decor and decorations on the wall. The chai turmeric latte was the best I've ever had (better than Starbucks, Colectivo, stone creek) while I saw delicious pizza being made in a pizza fire maker. The vanilla and chocolate banana cake had great unique flavor that was moist and fresh and paired very well with the chai latte I had. Lastly, it's average priced with most drinks costing $4 which is the norm. Overall, it's a must go!

Yelp
Coffee is amazing! Me and my boyfriend love the bee stings with oat milk. Service is always super fast and the calling in for order pick up comes in clutch when there's the "just-dropped-the-kids-off-at-school" rush. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Terrible company. Let's count the ways. 1. Horrible to their employees. VERY low pay rate and they don't trust the hard working baristas enough to cash out their coin tips at the end of the day, so everyone walks home with $10-35 worth of coin change at the end of their $8 an hour/9 hour shift. I guess they think everyone can afford a car. Breaks are suggested to be "for the weak" in this work climate and if you ask for/take your regular 10 minutes every two hours everyone rolls their eyes. 2. Dull and loathsome owners. They opened the new "music venue" location but then said live music is just "too much" and that live music/bands are "obnoxious." When they opened their Public Market location they greeted everyone with a scowl (making fast enemies all around) and insisted on not having any music for customers or employees because they were "just looking forward to everyone working in silence." Employees were encouraged to not smile or be overly cheerful to customers because it was "shopping mall cheesy." 3. The coffee/espresso sucks. Every one of their roasts tastes like a watered down light roast coffee with a hint of lemongrass and metal. Lighter roasts should have MORE caffeine, but customers have said that they had to order 2 times the amount of shots in their morning black eye to get the same kick as the other espresso kiosks in the area. 4. Again, horrible to their employees. Unless you are higher up in the company they don't bother to learn your name and won't hesitate to say sharp witted digs regarding things out of your control, because your poor. If you have a family emergency or are late more than twice a year they fire you. They don't miss a beat pointing out how much milk they "give" you to train you- many times- as if you should pay them back?! If you don't NEED a job and your parents are paying your bills and you have the nonchalant attitude of Billie Eilish on a Sunday afternoon and possess complete disregard of other people and don't like good coffee and hate music you might just fit right in

Yelp
Good sit and sip coffee spot in Bay View. Outdoor sitting spots available during the spring / summer months in MKE

Yelp
Coffee so good. Bagels on par. Service could be less chill. Clean and always friendly. Have to try the turtle mocha iced coffee

Yelp
I had some time to kill on a Friday afternoon and stopped in at Anodyne Coffee Roasting to get some work done. There was free street parking (bonus!). I entered and was able to quickly order. Customer service was good. I had a beautiful (it really was pretty!) almond milk latte in a mug and a warm olives appetizers. The olives were okay, but the latte really made the trip. It was super thick and really flavorful. I worked there for about an hour. They were playing some fun hip hop music. Several families came in with their kids for dinner. I didn't try the pizza, but it looked like a big hit with the kiddos. It was cool to see families enjoying time there together. I liked my visit and it was a cool environment to work in. I'm definitely going to head back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Anodyne bayview is more than just a coffee shop. Coffee, pastries, beer, and pizza! What more can you want? I often come to study here because I know I can get more sustainable fuel midway through the day. Today I got the arugula and prosciutto pizza and it is great! Cooked to perfection, the crust is crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. I also took the recommendation of the barista for a unsweetened tea and it is delicious (although I forgot the name of it). Staff is very friendly and they always have a killer playlist on. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Best coffee duh! BUT AMAZING PIZZA NOW? Had their pizza last week. Authentic Naples like pizza. Incredible crust and super fresh ingredients. Loved every bite and was so affordable. Best pizza in Milwaukee, or ever? They are open tues-sat 4:30-9 for pizza. 10/14/19 Amazing as ever. Love to see an all female pizza staff as it's always been. I even tipped the ladies ;)

Yelp
While perusing wedding venues, we were given a list of local bakeries that were great cake options. We looked up the bakeries and sure enough, a coffee shop about a mile from where we were having lunch sold cake by of the bakers. Jackpot! Impromptu cake sampling on a Friday afternoon? Yes, please. The coffee shop was buzzing with people; lots of space for working, studying, and hanging out, wifi available as well. We were really there for the cake but ended up getting some coffee too. What a happy accident! I had the Honey Bee Latte - a latte with local honey and vanilla. SO AMAZING. I wish I could remember to sweeten all my coffee with honey; it was so different and you could really taste the honey. My fiancé drank cortado which he enjoyed. The cake was good - orangey and vanilla. I really enjoyed that local bakeries selling their products so we could try something local sweets.

Yelp
I try to support local businesses whenever I can so giving 2 stars isn't an easy thing to do. But, in this case, it's all I can give them. I've been coming in mid-afternoon for a couple of months and each time I hope the crew of barista's is heads up enough to create an ambiance of a young, urban cafe. That includes the sound level of whatever choice of music they prefer. Sadly, they do not. Excessive loud music is perfect when the cafe is closed and the crew is cleaning and closing up. It is not good when customers, who are paying to enjoy a coffee or tea drink while talking with their friends find themselves shouting back and forth. That's fine if you're in a club, drinking & dancing. It's not good for a cafe. If the goal of the owner/management is to move customers in and out quickly, then they are doing an excellent job. If the goal of the owner/management is to create a loyal customer base while expanding that base with excellent reviews and recommendations, that most likely wont happen. I truly hope the owner/management reads and responds to this review and at the very least, reminds their crew that customers do come first when you're working at a customer service job. Just to offer a little background on this reviewer, my son has been in the entertainment business for more than 30 years, performing at venues all over the world. I have been to more concerts and clubs than I care to mention so I do understand the difference between loud music and excessively loud music...when and where it's appropriate and when and where it is not. A cafe serving coffee, tea and pizza is not the environment for the latter.

Yelp
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures but this place is amazing. The service is always prompt and friendly. Their coffee is outstanding. The honey bee latte is sooo good! I also love their pizzas; especially trying the new weekly/monthly specials. They have city market power scones that are delicious too! Their covid safety procedures have also been great!
google avatar

Tessa M.

Yelp
The pizza was incredible! Perfect size for two hungry people. Fast and friendly service and willing to customize for my picky partner (:
google avatar

Amber Z.

Yelp
Got the pizza special of the day which was the "Totally Radish-ical man" which had radishes and some sort of greens. Awesome name and unique flavor idea but somewhat underwhelming pizza. I was expecting the crust to be real nice and crispy since being made in a wood fired oven but it was somewhat chewy and limp. Decent flavor. I also feel their drink selections are kinda limited. Cool concept to serve pizza in a coffee shop just not the greatest pizza I've had.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
I honestly have never tried the coffee or even sat inside and stayed for awhile. I come for the wood fire pizza! Holy delicious! Whenever I am in the mood for a take-out Arugula and Prosciutto pizza, this place is it! I can't get enough of it! I am in the process of changing gyms for a bigger workout because I'm addicted to this pizza. Ha! I've also tried the Margherita and The Spice and both are great. The Margherita is a fresh and simple taste and The Spice is definitely spicy...delicious, but very spicy. Give it a try! The main reason I don't come here and have coffee is that I will literally sit there and have to order the pizza every time because It smells amazing inside. I'm sure the coffee is great too, but I can't speak on that behalf. Get the pizza......and I will try the coffee eventually!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Came for a light lunch and afternoon coffee. Overall the place had a fun vibe and the service was good. The barista helped me understand what their specialty drinks were and pick something out -- it was good but a little sweet for my taste. I also got a sampler of bruchetta. I was excited to try them all but in the end they we're not all that special. I would come back for a coffee & the vibe but would probably skip the food.

Joshua W.

Yelp
The pizza here is better than it has any right to be and the employees are angels. Stopped in shortly before closing after a miserable car ride into town from Chicago. They saved dough for 2 pizzas after we called to be sure they were still open. I love that each Anodyne has its own unique vibe and I particularly love this one.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I want to give it five, but lately feeling like they have been watering down their coffee. I do enjoy the place.
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for pizza at the moment in this area. Love the wood-fired veggie pizza. The place has such a friendly ambience, and the baristas are friendly and efficient too. I had the best Rishi tea.

Yelp
This is a review of their food experience. This quiet, yet efficient coffeehouse in Bay View is a great place to come, kickback, and relax. You can enjoy great coffee and or pizza, that is as good as any in Milwaukee. It has has an eclectic clientele of locals, Hipsters, yuppies, and business women doing deals. All come here for the coffee, the vibe and good eats. After enjoying a bike ride on the South Shore Bike path, we were ready to put calories back on, and decided to get pizza and salad for lunch. We started with a simple green salad, mixed with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It came with raw sunflower seeds, red onions, tomatoes and chickpeas, and nearly overflowed out of the bowl. There was enough salad to share with three people. Next we ordered 2 pizzas. First, the basic Margherita pizza. It was loaded with a light red sauce, fresh basil and drops of mozzarella. The crust was crunchy and the pizza dough was moist, but not undercooked. We also got the Veggie pizza (sans the olives) that included red sauce, red onion, red peppers, mozzarella, and broccoli. Again, edges of the crust were blackened (how we like it) that gave a crackle with each bite. It was just a lazy lunch after an energetic bike ride. As my daughter commented..."is there any reason we continue to order chain pizza? I mean really, why go back?!?" Well said. Although we live out in the burbs, we will make the trek back again for the great handcrafted pizza, the atmosphere and the nice staff.

Yelp
In what looks to be a cute location. Great space inside. AH-mazing pastries and cookies (from a nearby bakery, so my local friends told me). I'm not a big coffee drinker and got an Italian soda, which was quite good. My friends I was visiting buy their ground coffee for at home, and I tried some of that the day before and it was lovely. A nice local coffee shop.
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
Great coffee options and bakery but get there early before the bakery sells out. Nice outdoor seating nice neighborhood

B L.

Yelp
By far my favorite of the local roasters. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, coffee is always delicious, and their spaces have a nice vibe. Been to a couple shows at the Bruce st. location and I highly recommend.
google avatar

Nick L.

Yelp
Who doesn't love Anodyne? Coffee so strong your spoon stands up, fabulous wood-fired pizza, and now Purple Door ice cream! Perfect for a swift cortado or a lazy weekend lunch-plus-study-sesh.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed visiting this great neighborhood cafe during our stay this weekend in Bay View. We did coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and cookies. My cortado was made right each time, and very flavorful, high quality brew. Didn't have a chance to try the pizza, maybe next time. Highly recommend stopping here.
google avatar

Rohan D.

Yelp
They used to the coffee roasting here, but they moved that operation elsewhere so they had all this space and decided to start making Italian style wood-fire oven pizza. Great idea! Unlike the evil Transfer place, they always treat me with respect here, and the pizza combinations are pretty Italian. Lots of good non meat combinations, I like the anchovies and hot peppers combo myself. Good coffee, good service, maybe the seating could be more comfortable but otherwise it's a good place to get some work done if you don't get pizza sauce on and in your keyboard.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
I wanted pizza but I also REALLY needed some tea in my life. This place is the best of both worlds. Ordered the special pizza Ms. Figgy (figs, cheese, arugula etc) for $18. It was delicious I could order that again and again it was sooooo good. I also ordered a ginger chai tea and this is the best tea I have had in ages. The ginger was just the right bite not over powering. Parking was easy right outside and the atmosphere instead was awesome. Extra points for the good music being piped throughout this location. I would go out of my way to stop here again.
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
Is their coffee still the best in the city? Yes, yes it is. Are their South/Central American roasts still some of the best I've ever *ever* had? Yes, yes they are. Am I currently writing this third review update from Andoyne while listening to Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Sr.? Yes, yes I am.
google avatar

Helen N.

Yelp
The coffee is great - but I also love the fact that I can go in there on my own and enjoy a glass of wine and some really good pizza! Really enjoyed and felt relaxed - which is not always the case going into a bar by yourself!
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Flavorful and complex, Anodyne coffee is becoming one of my favorites in and around the city. After a recent trip to Portland and Seattle I was spoiled by french press and pour-over coffee. Anodyne seems like it is a bit ahead of the curve on this and will be "there" soon. The cafe is quiet and cute and I never have experienced a line. They have quite an assortment of coffees and their staff is very helpful and will explain the different options or even provide you with a taste before making your selection. They always have wonderful looking, handmade desserts to nibble on in the case. I've been able to resist...for now. If you like a bland cup of coffee or enjoy Folgers crystals, this may not be your favorite place. If you think coffee can be as complex as a fine wine, you should be pretty excited. Art Nerd Note: They have some handmade Anodyne coffee mugs for sale that are very, very cute. The one with the stars is my favorite if anyone wants to buy me a present. :-)
google avatar

Heidi P.

Yelp
Mostly obsessed with this place. Since we moved to Bay View about a stone's throw from this Anodyne, my husband and I wish we could have it every day. We get lattes (with whole milk, which is the way they make them normally, gotta love it) and they're always consistently delicious and the perfect non-burnt temperature. We add a little honey and cinnamon at the mixing station. Shout out for the free honey, we super appreciate it. The coffee shops back in Michigan always charge for it. Everyone here is always super friendly too. Also love that they have metal spoons for stirring. Reduce and reuse!

Yelp
With so many coffee shops in Bayview, it's a challenge to be the best, and Anodyne is meeting that challenge and aspiring to surpass it. The company has an admirable policy of support the local community, and non-profits in general. I've been to many charity events that offered the opportunity to bid on gift certificates and cool gift packs from Anodyne. And that unwavering support should certainly be recognized, if only in this review. On to the actual coffee shop: Quick service is essential to my routine morning stops and it is stellar enough here for me to go a little out of the way. The baristas are always welcome and cheery while operating at maximum efficiency. Tea has always been my drink of choice, and Rishi is the pinnacle, which they proudly serve here. My favorite fruit tea, Scarlet, is usually on the menu and provides a great caffeine free morning boost. The warm rich scent will waken your taste buds which will surely be pleased by the deep full bodied tastes of sweet blueberries and robust cherries. Or when caffeine is a necessity, the Rishi Masala Chai is a great option. It's a very balanced blend of strong black tea laced with robust Indian Spices. It's one big HELL-O in a cup. And it can be crafted with cow or soy milk. And while I don't personally drink coffee, my friends and family that partake regularly absolutely rave about their blends. And judging by the rich and intoxicating smell of their beans upon entering, this is one of the best.
