Anthony’s Seafood Market and Restaurant Review - Middletown - Newport - The Infatuation

"Anthony’s in Middletown serves some of the island’s best seafood, and you’ll most likely always encounter a line. Place your order, and then make your way over to the first-come, first-serve picnic tables and enjoy the bustling fishmarket-meets-beachfront lobster bar. All the fish is fresh and delicious, whether you’re in the mood for lobster, scallops, and steamers. There are a few solid kid- and land-lover-friendly options on the menu, too, but you're really here for some classic New England seafood." - Danielle Rose

"For lunch, we stopped at Anthony’s Seafood in Middletown, Rhode Island. Had clam chowder (solid!), onion rings (have you ever met an onion ring you didn’t like?), a stuffed quahog (this was new to me — basically just a clam shell filled with stuffing — a taste of Thanksgiving on a 96-degree day!), coleslaw, and a lobster roll."

Anthony Seafood in Newport, Rhode Island, is a must-visit spot! They’re the local wholesaler for fresh seafood, and they also have their own restaurant. You can always count on the seafood to be the freshest in town, making it the best choice for any seafood lover. And let me tell you, the seafood nantucket is absolutely incredible! Even though the fried seafood is a bit over-the-top, it’s worth trying. Oh, and don’t forget to try the Portuguese clam chowder - it’s a must-have! I drive three hours just to eat here, and it’s worth every mile.

Google
I’ve been coming to Anthony’s over the last few years and the food is always delicious and fresh. It’s a no frills spot where you order and grab a table (or take out if you want). I love their calamari and fried scallops - these will always be my go to. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for fresh seafood and a fun spot. Looking forward to coming back soon!

Google
I came in today for the first time ever 3.8.25 with my family I have seen a lot of reviews and people on the island mention Anthony’s Seafood on social media. Wow they weren’t KIDDING!!! As soon as you come in you get hit with fresh seafood counters with an array of different seafood options. This place has a line you form into while you figure out what you’re going to orden in and then a separate line for takeout. Anthony’s has great seats, good environment and swift service! & DELICIOUS 🤤 FRESH SEAFOOD!!! I really enjoyed our time here tonight we will DEFINITELY BE BACK! Worth every penny!!

Google
Anthony’s seafood was quick and by far one of the best restaurants I visited on my trip to Rhode Island. The Lobster Roll was to die for. The Rhode Island Clam Chowder was also a delight though if you’re looking for a creamy Clam Chowder I’d go for their other options as this is more of a broth. Even though I was accompanied by a large party they were able to seat and manage the group really well. I would put this on a go-to list if you’re passing through as it was a dish I ended up telling people about over and over.

Google
Hot lobster roll was lacking butter and the roll was not buttered. The lobster meat was cooked well but the watery juice it was in caused the bread to separate with the first bite. The fried cod was very good.

Google
Best lobster roll, fried flounder and clam cakes! So delicious! Fresh and hot!! Could eat there every single day if lived in the area

Google
No one is coming for the french fries, but that’s the weakest part of the meal (factory made/ from frozen). aside from that, Lobster salad roll and clam chowder terrific! I beat the dinner rush by arriving at 5:15pm!

Google
We had a very pleasant experience. Nice atmosphere with indoor/outdoor seating. You order first then sit. Chowder was ready instantly, the Portuguese fish chowder was delicious! I would definitely eat here again!

Yelp
Stopped in on short trip to Newport. Really no frills and great seafood. We had the Shrimp Cocktail and fried shrimp and they were both excellent. My wife raved that the New England Clam Chowder was the best she had in a long while.

Yelp
I like to eat at seafood markets that having dining cause I know the seafood is fresh. Anthony did not disappoint. Get the clam chowder. Both the creamy style and the RI style with clear broth were delightful. Family shared the fried fisherman platter which had scallops, shrimp, whole belly clams and cod. I had the lobster roll which was on the small side but it had large chunks of buttery lobster. Super casual place where you order at the counter and they bring the food to you.

Yelp
We walked in and the place was spotless. Very clean and a very nice first impression. We read the menu and walked up and the girl took our order. We ordered steamers, fried shrimp and a 2 lb lobster. The whole process lasted 5 minutes and we went and sat down. We waited approximately 18 minutes and two guys dropped off our food. The booth was comfortable and the dining area was fine. The food - steamers were good Lobster was fairly tough, but overall good. The fried shrimp were ok, but had a lot of breading in them and I was full / sick with only eating 10 shrimp. I would not recommend the fried shrimp. I was disappointed about nobody asking how our meal was. No extra napkins or want some water. On our way out, u saw the self serve water jugs by the door. I was very unimpressed with the overall experience. If I go back again, I will try during season and try something better than fried shrimp. I will also not tip 20% for zero service. It was like being at McDonald. The overall reviews seemed better - we will try again in the summer. Maybe.

Yelp
Went there on my brother's recommendation and it did not disappoint. I loved the Portuguese chowder. So tasty. The New England clam chowder was ok but the Portuguese was delicious. We shared a fisherman platter and it was enough food for the two of us with leftovers. The scallops were spot on. Everything was good. It's a small place with indoor And outdoor seating. You order at the counter and go sit down. Very soon they bring you the feast. Cute no frills spot with solid seafood. You exit through the seafood store and it's hard to resist. Definitely a thumbs up

Yelp
Great seafood here, the fish tacos were great, nice a crispy and fully loaded the tortilla. Here you order your food at the counter and they bring it to you. The New England Clam Chowder was tasty too. If anything, you gotta check out the MASSIVE jumbo shrimp. Biggest shrimp I've ever seen. Inside gives a casual seafood restaurant vibe.

Yelp
Couldn't leave RI without writing a review for Anthony's Seafood! Absolutely delicious, fresh seafood! We greatly enjoyed the lobster rolls, clam chowder (so flavorful!), fried shrimp, fish and chips, tartar sauce, the half and half (lemonade and iced tea) was the best without being overly sweet! We ate here twice on our short stay and this last time I ordered the baked Nantucket something that had cod, shrimp, scallops with bacon bits, bread crumbs and an incredible lobster sauce! Great cozy place with friendly staff. First place we'll visit when we return to RI is Anthony's!

Yelp
Anthony's Seafood in Rhode Island is a must-visit for seafood lovers in the area. They have a wide range of offerings, and while the fried seafood is solid, the real star is the clam bellies--tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The chowders are rich and tasty, though they can sometimes lean a bit potato-heavy. The fish tacos are fresh and well-balanced, a definite win on the menu. The lobster roll is also good, with sweet, well-prepared lobster, though the bread could use a lighter hand on the butter. Overall, Anthony's delivers a classic, satisfying seafood experience with plenty to enjoy!

Yelp
Although a little hard to find / off the beaten path Anthony's has a cute location near a harbor; offering both outdoor and indoor seating. My only complaint is the lack of shade (umbrellas) on a sunny day. We came here with a party of 6 and we're quickly seated in a direct sunlight table. After getting our waters another table left and we asked to move to the table in the shade which made our experience way more enjoyable. Friendly service. I absolutely love that they have a menu just for dogs! I had the fish and chips which was a massive portion! I subbed the friends for sweet potato tots which was pretty good also. Actually 4 people at our table got the fish and chips and we all enjoyed the meal. My dad got the BLT wrap on a spinach wrap, he said that was pretty good also. I'd recommend stopping here if in the Newport area

Yelp
I was in Newport for a training and did not want to miss the opportunity of having some quality lobster rolls. They 100% exceeded my expectations on how delicious they were. The guy at the cash register was very patient in my multiple questions and it made the experience feel less daunting . I would come back to Newport and eat here based on the price point and the quality of their cold lobster roll.

Yelp
When a restaurant is featured on food network, you know it is the real deal. The seafood at Anthony's is so fresh and all the food we ate here (from their main dishes, sides, and drinks) were SO good. This place deserves all the praise! My friends and I ordered kung pao calamari, stuffed quahog, baked scallops (which comes with 2 sides of your choice) and lobster roll (which comes with fries). My faves were the kung pao calamari (love how they infused calamari with familiar Asian flavors) and the lobster roll (the lobster was SO fresh and the serving of lobster was very generous). I would also recommend getting the stuffed quahog, since it is a speciality here and was one of the dishes featured on food network! They also have a selection of various alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to pair with your meal. No seafood meal is complete without a good ole beer or sweet lemonade or tea. I love how they had some locally made drinks on the menu as well. All in all, really dug this place. It's has the accolade of being featured in food network but still maintains its vibe as a local,down-to-earth joint. No frills or thrills, just good ole seafood!

Yelp
Good chilled lobster roll. The ri clam chowder was lacking in the clams. ~70% potato. The French fries were excellent. Be aware that not all of their seafood is domestic.

Yelp
Clam cakes - Awesome! Fish and chips - Almost perfect! Oil temp was off - batter too oily! Quick service. Kraft Mac & Cheese - gross! Had someone who wasn't feeling like seafood today so Mac & Cheese was ordered. Sadly it was just the boxed stuff. Not what we had expected. Asked for BBQ sauce, we were given cocktail sauce. Not a perfect experience but mostly very good.

Yelp
Came on a busy day during the 4th of July weekend, and we were not disappointed. Service - 10/10 They take the orders at the counter, and the seating and water was self-serve while we were there. We had two dogs with us, and they were very accommodating to allow the dogs to sit with us as we sat outside. The food came out very quick (less than 10 minutes). Food - 10/10 Clam Chowder: Very good, had a nice consistency and good portion size. Fish & Chips: Lightly breaded, fell apart quite nicely, really good. Felt like on the oil and went down smoothly. One of the best fish & chips i've had so far. Fisherman's Platter: Really good, everything was organized neatly and easy to tell what each portion was even with the breading on. Like the fish & chips, food wasn't oily and was lightly fried with good quality. Overall a wonderful location and will be coming back whenever I visit the Newport area again.

Hi T.

Yelp
We were visiting the Providence - Newport area in late December. It rained all day and put us in the mood for some delicious seafood. We wanted to eat where the locals eat. So we headed to Anthony's, which was featured on Food Network. There is a fresh fish counter for take home as well as a dining counter that offers a variety of seafood appetizers, fried and steamed options. Dine-in customers will have their food taken to their table. The dining space is homey and on a first come basis. The service was welcoming and quick. We recommend the Kung Pao calamari that was deep fried in a light batter and tossed in kung pao sauce. The fried seafood platter for two served with fries had scallops, shrimp and calamari. The apps and entrees did not disappoint. Anthony's is a gem. Make sure to visit when you're in the area.

Yelp
Lightly battered, cooked perfectly whole belly clams plate! And perfect fish & chips! And Anthony's has that good grinder salt& pepper!! Love the off street easy parking! Away from the Newport downtown crowd. Staff is on top of things! Always smiling, keeping things clean and working hard!

Yelp
There is no trip to Rhode Island without eating fresh seafood at Anthony's Seafood. It's a very simple place with great food! You enter and line up to their counter and order what you want. Their menu is simple but make sure you read their daily specials written on the board to the right of the line. Don't forget to get their clam chowder and their fish and chips! Their lobsters are the best. Sweet and tender never rubbery. Lemon butter is provided but their home made vinegar is the best too! You will never be disappointed when you go to Anthony's. Great place and very good seafood
google avatar

Amir M.

Yelp
Super fresh and amazing tasting sea food, prices were very reasonable, hot sauce was amazing and locally made, super friendly staff and really good fries. Better than most other spots in the area
google avatar

Theresa R.

Yelp
Upon entry you are greeted by the fresh seafood market that looks like they have a nice fresh selection to indulge in. The restaurant is immediately to the right with no partition between the two. We ordered hot lobster rolls and New England clam chowder. Overall the food was fresh and tasty. The chowder is a must try (especially on a chilly Fall night). The lobster roll had tender pieces of lobster with no fillers. Just a bun and lobster meat which is completely fine with me. The fries are special. They were hot, well-seasoned and perfectly crispy. The service was pleasant, the place was clean and the bathroom well kept. I'd come back next time I'm in the area for sure!

Yelp
4 stars Anthony's Seafood: A Hidden Gem for Casual Eats - no beach but great food! After the closure of Easton's Beach Snack Bar, we were on the hunt for a new casual spot with great seafood. Anthony's Seafood turned out to be just what we were looking for! The atmosphere is no-frills - you order at the counter, grab your own water, and eat off cafeteria trays. But don't let that fool you. The food here is outstanding and reasonably priced. I tried the Kung Pao Calamari based on Yelp recommendations, and it did not disappoint. Perfectly fried with a delicious flavor, it was easily one of the best calamari dishes I've had. My wife's fried clam strips were crispy and nostalgic, reminding her of childhood summers at the Jersey shore. While there's no ocean view, the attached fish market ensures everything is fresh. The place is clean and well-maintained, which is always a plus for casual eateries. If you're looking for a laid-back spot with excellent seafood at good prices, Anthony's is your place. It may become our new go-to for that beach casual vibe we've been missing since Easton's closed. We'll definitely be back to try more of their menu! I can highly recommend the Kung Pao Calamari.

Yelp
Delicious!! We ordered fried scallops and fried shrimp! Portions were large and the breading on the fish was light! Plus - the fries! Oh yum! Food was fab, ambiance okay, staff was pleasant and restaurant was clean!
google avatar

Yelp
Liked this place a lot. Food was served out quickly and tasted great. Lobster rolls were delicious and full. Clam chowder was solid. Littleneck clams were fantastic, very fresh. Chicken tenders were actually really good too, better than your avg tender. Overall worth coming back and trying some more items.

Elijah W.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the view was incredible. I would have probably preferred if the lobster roll had used a true roll for the bread instead of a hamburger bun, but it was still great. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Anthony's is a place where you go for the food. It has a wide assortment of fresh, reasonably priced seafood for eat-in or take-out, along with seating, both indoors and outdoors. You order and pay at the counter and your meal is delivered to your table. The restaurant is open Thursday thru Sunday. Anthony's also has a seafood market, open Thursday thru Tuesday, I believe. I recommend it for excellent seafood. Sometimes, during the winter, when I am staying in Naples, FL, I crave an order of fried shrimp from Anthony's.
google avatar

Kathy K.

Yelp
Order and you are given a number and it is brought to your table. Inside seating or the Outdoor tables are on crates and pool seats. Portuguese fish soup was fantastic. Fish tacos and fish sandwich with a couple of beers were delicious. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
If you're staying in Newport, leave town and come here for the best fried seafood and lobsters and for the best prices. No frills. Order at the counter and they'll bring it to you at one of the restaurants indoor or outdoor tables. Beer, wine, spiked seltzers and Prosecco available. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Vijay S.

Yelp
Got the lobster roll from here for lunch. They have a separate take out line. They also sell fresh fish here. The warm lobster roll was good (not great); there were some big chunks of lobster in there. Service was bit slow. The daily rate was 26$ for the roll. Casual ambiance. Overall decent experience.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
The food was decent. Seafood was fresh but was definitely a heavy meal. Really enjoyed the Portuguese seafood soup
google avatar

Susan N.

Yelp
We went for the lobster rolls! They had a sign covering that selection stating there was a shortage of lobsters... in Rhode Island?!? So we decided on scallops. Portions were definitely plentiful. But the clam chowder lacked clams. The scallops were bland, dry and covered with plain bread crumbs. We had to request melted butter to make them flavorful enough to eat after paying $28 per each meal. The ketchup was generic for the fries and gross. No one stopped at our table to see if we needed anything or to inquire if things were to our liking. Would not visit again EVER!!
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
Did a day trip to Newport, RI. This place was on my ToDo list. Ordered 3 Spicy Stuffies, the Kung Po Calamari and the Whole Belly clams (large) - came out to just over $75. Drive home was 4 1/2 hours. Thank god I brought a cooler lol. 20 minutes in the oven and it was time to eat. Everything was absolutely yummy. Wife liked the calamari and I thought the whole belly clams were delish - order was huge but I'm sure that's why the bill was so high. Next time I'll need to dine in to enjoy it to the fullest.
google avatar

Clare C.

Yelp
A group of us came here for dinner on a Friday evening! Loved it here! The atmosphere is nice with lots of seating, some inside and outside. The workers were we nice. Lots of parking available. You order and then find a table. I ordered the lobster roll and an appetizer. They were both great! The portions were great and a very fair price! Great lobster and filling! Diner drive in and dives was also here which was so good!! Food came out in about 15 minutes! Great experience!

Lori R.

Yelp
I loved eating at Anthony's. So many fresh fish and seafood options it was hard to de use what to eat. Portions of food were plentiful and the service was very good.

Yelp
We came here during our trip to Rhode Island for a late lunch one day and ordered the oysters, fishermans platter, a cup of Rhode Island clam chowder and a bottle of half & half. So you basically order your food, and they give you a number to place on your table, and they will find and deliver the food to you, which seems to be common in a lot of restaurants these days. When we placed our order, we got the cup of soup and found a seat outside. From what we noticed, the food comes out as it's ready, so you'll get plates here and there. We ended up getting a second cup of soup that basically was on the house because the server left it before we could say we had already got the one we ordered. We thought the Rhode Island clam chowder with the clear broth was flavorful and had a good amount of potatoes and clams, and it tasted even better because one cup was free. The oysters also tasted fresh. The fishermans platter came with clams, shrimp, scallops, calamari, and we got the cod instead of flounder and everything was fried. Everything on the platter tasted fresh and wasn't oily. They give you cocktail sauce and tarter sauce with the platter.
google avatar

Joanne D.

Yelp
Got take out (baked cod) and the to go container leaked all over my car. The fried clams were fine but the fish was soggy and made a mess. Won't get take out again Maybe triple containers
google avatar

Patricia W.

Yelp
Repeat customers here each vacay at Newport. Delicious fish, fresh oysters, best lobster roll and French fries crispy and hot. Don't go for the ambiance (very casual) but the service was great. Long lines were expected. We choose to take out most visits., great fish at fair market prices.
google avatar

Moe E.

Yelp
This place was pretty good overall. We walked in and ordered, and our food came out very quickly. The calamari was really good (the one with the thai sauce and peanuts). That dish was definitely the highlight of the meal. We got a lobster roll and chicken tenders (small) and they were both good. The honey mustard was excellent!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Fabulous, varied seafood menu - and more! Fried, baked, boiled, raw. We chose the lobster dinner - perfection. Great first dinner in Rhode Island! Simple, welcoming seating area; order at the counter; choices of fresh fish and other dishes to take away, as well as a variety of cooking staples for sale in retail. Best place for quality food!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Great chowder and lobster roll - could be a little bit bigger in size but that is how things are nowadays. Would def come back and recommend!

Edward A.

Yelp
Lobster roll and fish and chips were prepared perfectly. Service works. Order at the counter and they bring it out hot. It a seafood joint. Sat on the patio and dogs were allowed.
google avatar

Edgar H.

Yelp
The selection was large and excellent for both pick up and sit in. Great service, by fall one of the best while we were in RI. Extremely friendly staffs. While you're there you might want to see their fresh seafood department to fill up your cooler or ice chest for your drive back home. Would definitely go back!!
google avatar

Catherine A.

Yelp
Solid seafood joint in Newport. The clam chowder was great and the lobster roll was stuffed with lobster. We opted for the cold rolls and weren't disappointed. I appreciated the table service and friendliness of the staff. The large parking lot is great as I imagine this place gets busy with a store front and restaurant. I'm not a huge seafood consumer outside of lobster and oysters, but if their menu is as good as the lobster roll, you can't go wrong.
google avatar

oralia l.

Yelp
Delicious lobster roll with a very size ale amount of lobster. Today's price was $26 for the roll and fires. They sell beautiful, fresh seafood And have a menu of those offerings.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
My favorite place while visiting. Foods always fresh and taste good. We ordered different type of oysters they had.

Maureen H.

Yelp
This restaurant is unique to me in that you wait in line to order. After ordering you are seated by the hostess and then they bring you your food. This is important just to set your expectations correctly! The food is top quality. Clam chowder, fish and chips, and a lobster roll were all 5 star. If you like seafood, and a casual atmosphere, this is definitely a place to visit soon!

Jose B.

Yelp
Had the clam chowder, kung pao calamari, and lobster roll with fries with my partner and it was some of the best food we had while in RI. She normally hates clam chowder but ate the whole thing here, which just comes to show how good the food is. Not only can you eat here, but it's also a seafood market. From ordering to getting food was less than 10 minutes! Super Quick, food tasted FRESH, and food is DELICIOUS! Servers were very respectful and it definitely gives mom and pop shop vibes. 10/10 recommend.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
This the best lobster roll we ever had. The buns was perfect. Toasted and just enough butter. Lobster was so much muscles. $23 seasonal price. Definitely worth it. Everything else was good also. The fisherman's platter have 7 pieces of scallops. Yes we counted. And of course the calamari was the best in Anthony's and it is. So good.
google avatar

Natasha I.

Yelp
This is my number 1 go to place for lobster rolls and clam chowder. Hands down the best I had in Newport area. Everything is really fresh. The price is right and the staff is awesome.
google avatar

Art R.

Yelp
Came for lunch with my wife and daughter after church. The restaurant side opens at 12 and we were first in line. We had a dozen variety oysters. Fresh from the water, shucked on the way to the table. So clean and good. Being from the gulf coast area I love how clean and salty the oysters are here. I had the spicy stuffy - great. We split the flounder and chips - the fish was very crispy. Yum. My daughter had the lobster roll. I normally prefer hot buttered, but this was the best lobster salad lobster roll ever. Lots of big hunks of meat and the bread was split thick buttery and toasty. Yum! Give it a try!
google avatar

Nan T.

Yelp
Fantastic!!!!! Indebted to my Airbnb host for recommending this spot while visiting Newport. Employees were so nice and the food was AMAZING and such a great price point for high quality seafood. I will be dreaming of this meal for months. Worth the trip and will be back next time I'm in the Newport area.

Yelp
Fish & chips so good I am still thinking about it hours later. Mind blowingly fresh cod. Best in Rhode Island. Second only to fish and chips I had in Portland, Maine.
