The Ultimate Guide to Mexican Antojitos in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"On the quieter corner of Mercado Olympic, a family from Puebla turns out quesadillas, gorditas, huaraches, and tlacoyos with pure elongated masa diamonds filled with requesón or refried black beans and a nearby condiment stand for shredded lettuce, cream, queso cotija, and a variety of salsas." - Bill Esparza

I have dined in at this restaurant on multiple occasions. The food is excellent, and the price is fair. Their aguas frescas are top notch, and their tamales never disappoint. There is a brisk carry out business which can sometimes interfere with the regular service, causing it to be scattered or slow at times. The restaurant has dive bar energy, in the best way. Overall, I always have a positive experience and will continue to visit this restaurant at every opportunity.

Google
We stopped here since it’s close to the highway and we were so pleasantly surprised. We ordered la torta milanesa de pollo, chicken fajita, and the beef fajita and everything was SO GOOD! The food was also done very quickly which was amazing since we were very hungry. The prices were definitely very affordable for all the food you were getting. I’ll definitely be stopping here again in Paterson!

Google
I’m a regular customer and usually enjoy ordering from your restaurant, but I’ve been disappointed with the way the phone is answered. The person who usually picks up is consistently rude and doesn’t show basic courtesy when taking orders. It’s frustrating, and honestly, it’s making me consider not ordering anymore, even though I really like the food. I hope this can be addressed, because good customer service is just as important as good food.

Delicious food and reasonable prices. The staff is great. Love this place.

Antojitos Poblanos in Paterson, NJ is hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the area. I've been a regular patron for quite some time now, and it never fails to impress. The authenticity of their dishes is unmatched, and my personal favorite is the chaufa de camarones – a delightful blend of flavors and textures that keeps me coming back for more. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with attentive and friendly staff who go above and beyond to make your dining experience enjoyable. The menu offers a wide variety of options, ensuring there's something for everyone, whether you're a fan of tacos, burritos, or traditional Poblano cuisine. The ingredients are always fresh, and you can taste the care and dedication that goes into every dish. If you're a fan of Mexican cuisine or simply looking for a memorable dining experience, Antojitos Poblanos is the place to go. I highly recommend giving it a try, and I'm sure you'll become a regular just like me! Favorite Mexican restaurant! Great food.

Yelp
The food took really long to come out and it was freezing in this restaurant. as soon as I got my food it was instantly cold. I tried asking the employees for their manager and they told me they could not give me any information or name of the manager. I asked the waitress again for their manager she just ignored me and walked away. Terrible service

Yelp
A true gem! Love this place! It's authentic, heart warming food. I love their Chilaquiles verdes, Huevos Rancheros and The Fajitas Mixtas!

Yelp
I was around the area and deciding to dine here on a Saturday night. It wasn't busy and sat at the counter. The phone was non-stop and the orders kept coming it. The waitress was overwhelmed but was able to expedite my order to come together. I ordered the alambre tacos and a Polzole sp? soup. The soup also came with bean (veggie) tostada. I had no idea that came they cam with the soup. The tacos was very rich because it was steak and bacon. I liked that it comes with 4 tacos compared to other places. The tacos didn't come with radish or grilled scallions I expect from the really good mex places. The soup was kinda bland to me but it was still well done with real stock. What's great is that they serve Inca Kola like every other restaurant in P-Town. There's a small Peruvian dishes but I would skip those dishes. CC accepted, i think the are open very late. Not sure about bathroom. The place is tiny. The door is heavy and I kept looking back every time someone entered. Felt like the swat team was coming to get someone when the door busted opened. Plenty of street parking in front of Dr. Cave's during certain hours.

Yelp
Ordered chicken flautas, were good. A little dry... until I bite down and almost break my teeth on a tooth pick. Why is there tooth pick in my flauta...

Spain M.

Yelp
Food was horrid no flavor bad customer service never going there again honestly employees gave attitude
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
Good food, and I love that they deliver and accept cards. Believe it or not there are still some places that don't. I highly recommend. They make all types of traditional authentic Mexican dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Used to be good spot. Now more expensive, and under-staffed. Kitchen looks dirty. Food takes way tooooo long to prepare. Not going back after many years of loyal customer.

Yelp
Wow! very authentic Mexican hole the wall sort of spot... They took an old restaurant from 50's turned into place serving authentic Mexican food... I love it! I hope Paterson can keep revitalizing with great authentic ethnic food like this from all over! I ordered the chichorron chalupas and the steak gorditas.... delicious :) Very large portions I had to take some home. The lady working there is so friendly and helpful with the menu. You will definitely want to go back and try different things off the menu Large selection variety.
google avatar

Santiago K.

Yelp
Delicious food! The place itself it's small and diner style. Old fashioned and it looks ugly/old from outside but don't let that fool you. I ordered steak fajitas (Skirt steak) that came with rice, fried potato, cheese, guacamole, shrimp and tortillas and costed $12. My fiancé ordered breaded fish with rice and beans and costed $10. The water juices are also fresh and delicious, $3 for a 12oz cup and $4 for a mini jug. I'd deff come back if I'm around. Also prices varies between $5 to $15 per plate.
google avatar

Mucio L.

Yelp
Not fancy, but food is delicious. Make sure to ask if the food is spicy because most of it is made with hot sauce or spicy peppers the way it should be. Because this is a true Mexican spot, their degree of spiciness/Capsaicin is one level higher than your normal wanna be chain stores or tex mex places. So their Mild is Medium and their Medium is hot and their Hot is Super Hot. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Yelp
What can I say. My date was craving tacos. It was after midnight and the bar where we were's kitchen was closed. Hmmmmm. What to do. She jumps on yelp and finds Antojitos Poblanos. Crisis averted. We were in Clifton so it took only 5-7 minutes to get there. Are these the best tacos I've had? No, not even close. But they were solid tacos. The service was friendly, and they are open 24hrs on the weekend. Enough said. You can't beat that. They get the full 4 stars because I can go at 4am and eat good food. This place is NO FRILLS. And that's kind of what I like about. Love hipsters, but I assure you there will be none here. It is an experience and a meal. There is a strip club across the street, so you might have a dancer or two go eat during/after their shift. Chances are that a few drunks will come in and be loud and drunk (of course.) All of these things might turn some people off, but they add character to this divey joint. Craving Mexican and it's 3 am on Friday night? GO HERE!! you'll be happy. ENJOY!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hands the best Mexican food ever. You must try they following 1. Tacos 2. Flautas 3. Tostadas de pollo. 4. Flan

Yelp
Best tacos in Paterson. The tamales were amazing I got rajas and queso. Everything had a homemade taste. Except the horchata I could tell it was not homemade. But the agua de fresca was perfect. I'm 5 months pregnant and it satisfied every craving.
google avatar

Lee C.

Yelp
Wow! What a find - thanks, Yelpers! Stopped in for lunch, ordered the Tacos Campechanos (Campeche style with mixed meats - chorizo, bistec, chicharron) and a green (chicken) tamale. Those may have been the best tacos I've ever had - so flavorful - 4 for $8 - good deal. The tamale was good, too - better than those at most Mex places - IF they even have them. Parking can be tough in that area - street parking only - but be patient - it's worth it.

Yelp
I wish that I could give them 0 stars. First of all the manager at this restaurant is very rude. We spent over 100$ at this restaurant and upon receiving my order it was completely incorrect. I placed an order and explained word for word what we wanted for each meal. They added numerous items to each meal after we specifically asked for what we wanted in each meal. & when we went back to the restaurant to see if they can accommodate us for the incorrect meals. We were told that they can not help us & that what kind of people are we if we don't know what comes in the meals. I have worked in the food industry for many years & have never experienced such horrible customer service before. The customer is always right. & I didn't not appreciate being spoken too as if we are dumb and should automatically know what eat items comes with. They repeated my order word for word & still never told me that these meals came with additional items.
google avatar

Rosa M.

Yelp
Their tacos are very good, they're agua frescas felt fresh . Nice small spot. Felt like homemade food. Thank you.
google avatar

Madeleine V.

Yelp
After a night out dancing there usually aren't many places open to eat besides diners so I was so happy when we found this little spot! We tried the (I'm really gonna mess up the name please forgive me) almoharas? Not sure if that's it but it's a steak cheese peppers and bacon taco...and HOLY CRAP it was amazing! Thought the combination sounded a bit strange but I would definitely go back just for these. We also had the chicken flautas, and although they were perfectly crunchy, they were dry. I felt like it needed something else inside besides the chicken like a sauce ...but no worries, we added some of the green sauce they provided and they were tasty as well. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
If I could give them no stars I would! I order tacos of bistec and carnitas and the lady on the phone was talking to someone else and messed my order and kept saying it was my fault. Honestly, I loved this place but their staff and customer service are HORRIBLE and I will not be ordering from here anymore!
google avatar

Dewan A.

Yelp
Probably the best Mexican restaurant around. 1) I got the Mexican breakfast, Huevos Rancheros. Best! 2) The horchata was awesome, the size was huge. 3) Service is fast and awesome.
google avatar

Ibrahim O.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've ever had. The triple fajita plate is one of the single greatest orders you can get in Paterson. Just try it.
google avatar

Wilkania R.

Yelp
Best Mexican food i've tried in Paterson ! Tacos are delicious & Authentic! The prices are not bad at all & they are open until late which is the best part since a lot of food places around here close early !
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Loved this place since as long as I can remember. People if you want legitimately fair priced , good quality food please come here. I have been to many cantinas and Mexican themed and or TexMex places. But nothing compares to this place. It feels as if you were actually in Mexico. PURE, Legit and Genuine Mexican food here!!

Matias M.

Yelp
To start off, you gave like no lettuce and tomato. Also in the taco orders like one slice of cucumber for 4 tacos. Had a big order and you can see them cutting costs. I'd rather be charged more then getting subpar food.
google avatar

Angelina L.

Yelp
My favorite taco spot in Paterson, so far. Great tacos and amazingggggg hot sauce. I also like their empanadas!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
I was in town for a basketball game when hunger struck. Unfamiliar with the area, of course I turned to YELP. The place looks like one of those old school, train car style diners, which was neat. The staff was very friendly, so were the customers either eating at the counter or waiting for their food. You get a lot of food which tasted good for the price you pay, which is not all that much. I'd definitely go back if I've ever in the area again!
google avatar

Gabbie P.

Yelp
Tacos. Were. Amazing. As someone who hardly goes out of their way to have tacos for lunch I throughly enjoyed the Tacos de Bistec (steak tacos). The tacos al pastor are by far the best i've had to date. Service is just what you'd expect; nothing to complain about. The only thing keeping me from giving this place 5 stars is the horchata. It could just be personal preference but the horchata here seemed a bit watered down. Again, could just be my tastebuds. All in all, I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
I'm definitely ordering from here again.prices are great and the food is authentic with great taste..they delivered the food and it was still hot like it just came out of the kitchen.i recommend that everyone try this place out.thanks again.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for a while now, starting about 3 years ago. Many taco Tuesdays, a Cinco de Mayo, and random Mexican cravings. The service is always decent, and they're open late, 24 hours on the weekend. The food is definitely a solid option to satiate those Mexican cravings. The tacos de bistec and pretty good. The tostadas are usually on point, and the torta de milanesa is serviceable. This place might have gotten 4 stars but horchata is a life passion of mine. I honestly question if places without horchata are even truly Mexican. It is a culinary crime of the highest degree. It is not so much as they don't have horchata. It is that they don't have horchata and lie about it! When you order the horchata, you don't get the sweet nectar sent from the heavens from the Aztec gods! You get some store bought powder mixed with water. A tear falls from my eye as I write this. Apologies for my rant, but horchata is life.
google avatar

Bria B.

Yelp
Amazing, I always go to this place if I want some home cooked Spanish food, fast too!!!
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Talk about authentic Mexican food. This place is tiny not fancy but cozy. Everything is made fresh to order the service is great considering they are always busy with take outs and walk-ins. We've tried lots of items on the menu and can honestly say everything is delicious. If you like spicy get your guacamole with fresh jalapeños it's amazing.
google avatar

Shaina S.

Yelp
Tacos, sopes, and horchata.. That's all I need to satisfy a late evening craving for Mexican food!
google avatar

Tatiana T.

Yelp
My sister took me and my son for the first time to Antojitos Poblanos and we both loved it! Now I know where to go when we're craving tacos late at night! The flautas, spicy tacos and tamales are great! Can't wait to go back!!! FYI the mango smoothie is delicious! Their lemon juice is great too!! Great customer service!
google avatar

Chantel M.

Yelp
The food was horrible! We saw the place was packed and the phones ringing off the hook when we arrived so we were ready for the food to be amazing. My family is Mexican so we're wanted good Mexican food. The horchata tasted like the water from boiled rice. The empanadas were dry and seemed like they'd been refried from an earlier time. The mole didn't have salt or seasoning. It tasted like something you'd buy in a supermarket. They said the tortillas were handmade they were clearly packaged flour tortillas. The sopes were so bad there are barely words to describe them. There was a soggy sope topped with wilted lettuce, grainy beans and only a dusting of cheese on top. The sopes were completely inedible. The only reason they are getting 1 star is that they had bottled coke from Mexico and the torta de semita was decent. The torta was nothing to write home about but it was seasoned and edible. I will NEVER come back here.
google avatar

Benjamin R.

Yelp
EXCELLENT Mexican food! I went to the highschool just up the street from this place and would always come here after school. This was a nice place to grab quick bite with a few friends! They make great Cemitas, and tasty Mole!
google avatar

Yann F.

Yelp
Real bummer!, my wife wanted to treat me for some authentic Mexican breakfast, and after looking in her iPhone, we found that place in Patterson, Called them ahead, one spoke spanish one spoke English. No problemo, place looks like an old diner train car style like, it was expensive and not really typical Mexican B'fast, We ordered Huevos rancheros and huevos a la Mexicana, not suave at all. watered down beans, with yellow rice and chopped eggs with tomatoes and onions. We'll pass by next time.
google avatar

Ana V.

Yelp
This is probably my first 5 star rating. In fact I don't rate much, but when I do I either really hate the place or really love the place. It was amazing. The fact that it's open until 6am (God bless the workers) is impressive. But even then the quality that the food is given during after hours its phenomenal. The staff is dealing with drunk people and have so much composure. I truly respect that. Then eating food like I'm in Texas or Mexico. Can't wait to go back.

Luz S.

Yelp
Was not happy at all. The food is honestly not even that good.. they barely put any meat in the tacos. They put 80% cilantro and onions and 20% meat. I've been to places where the tacos are way more delicious and much cheaper!

Mahwish Z.

Yelp
Delicious! Best authentic Mexican food I had in this area so far! I ordered huevos rancheros and cheese fluatas and I loved it!!
google avatar

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Love this place! Their tacos de carnitas and cecina asadas are always on point. My daughter loves the pozole and the beans with tortillas. Hubby always orders the adobo verde but he's been branching out and trying new things and so far so good. The chile is extra spicy so be careful not to out too much. They're open until late and on weekends open (gasp!!!) 24hours. The delivery wait can sometimes be long but the food always comes hot. Only complaint are the prices. $9 for all the soups? I bit much so that's why this is a once a month treat. In Passaic we found a new spot with cheaper prices but this place delivers so oh well.

Pierre F.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place I ordered the quesadilla with bistec they were really good
google avatar

P. Andrea A.

Yelp
While searching for a place that delivers I came across this little gem, food was amazing good, portions were large fresh and good quality skirt steak and the price was right. Good, cheap and delivery very hard to find.

Brandon G.

Yelp
Yo everything here is bomb! If you're around the city and you want some AUTHENTIC Mexican food this is the place!
google avatar

Jose A.

Yelp
Excellent I stopped by to eat at this restaurant and it's really good the food is amazing and the staff are really friendly. I came to buy something all the way from Lakewood nj and I got hungry so I stopped at this restaurant and I'm glad I did excellent.
google avatar

Big S.

Yelp
These people are really respectful and courteous, they attend all your needs in a fashionable manner , not to mention their food is better then then the customer service so that means the food is above excellent if thats possible

Fatima S.

Yelp
One of the best authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to! My coworkers and I regularly order takeout from here. Service can be a little slow during lunch time, but the food is always fresh! The tacos are ok but their flautas and quesadillas are amazing. Decent smoothies too. They are open 24 hours on the weekends so if you're ever craving late-night Mexican food, this is your spot.

Graph M.

Yelp
Tacos were made to order, as in I picked the exact ingredients I wanted, with the help of a friendly waitress. They were excellent as was the guacamole and salsa verde! And do not forget -- THEY DELIVER!
google avatar

Kristina V.

Yelp
I've eaten there twice..The First time we ate inside the restaurant as far as the decor is needs major renovations. We waited 30m for 2 orders of tacos and a quesadilla... We quickly got over it bc they tasted so great with that green sauce!!! We happen to live LESS THAN 4minutes from there so we ordered take out (This time only 2 orders of tacos with extra green sauce) My husband called 45min in and they said delivery just went out 20m later the food came---Everything took OVER an HOUR, and no extra sauce lol- The delivery guy apologized for the lengthy preparations-once I brought it to his attention etc. Yummy tacos though just order waaaayyyy in advance.

Yelp
I am from Bergen County and have not found real ethnic latino/Mexican cuisine. So i decided to go for a Mexican breakfast on a Sunday morning after visiting yelp. The place from the outside resembles and old school railroad car diner. Same goes for the inside. It was cozy. I ordered some (4)tamales and huevos rancheros with a fresh squeezed orange juice. It was delicious ($21 total plus tip). The huevos ranchero plate was oversized. It came with refried beans, rice and the eggs fried medium over tomatoes salsa and thin tortillas. Very tasty. I will admit I was expecting more of a puree sauce were this one was a chunky tomato and onion salsa. Overall was very good. The tamales were not as spicy which I preferred and the masa had great taste. They were reheated (microwave maybe) but not too warm, could have been hotter for my preference. Price was high for the area in my opinion but overall cheaper than any other place near Bergen County. All and all I would go back but maybe to go. Probably not a good area to be in late in the day.

Divairy A.

Yelp
I LOVE this place, have been going to them for years. The sopes, tacos, quesadillas I mean everything is to die for. My wife and I usually go every Saturday night between 11 to 1am because yes they are open 24 hrs Friday and Saturday. Brenda is alway there and her customer service is amazing.
