11 Affordable Takeout Restaurants in Houston | Eater

"At Antone’s, the po’ boy remains true to its roots as an extraordinarily hefty sandwich wrapped up and served to-go, but with a Houston twist, of course. The bestselling original po’ boy (a favorite here since 1962) has tangy chow chow dressing up a stack of cold ham, salami, provolone, and dill pickles. You’ll also find gyros and hummus on the menu, alongside other takes on po’ boys — hot chopped beef brisket is a hit — and classic New Orleans fare." - Vox Creative

"Antone’s Famous po’ boys have been a Houston favorite for over 50 years. Hot and cold style sandwiches are served on local Slow Dough or Royal Bakery bread. Antone’s options include fried seafood, roasted pork loin, beef brisket, and deli meats and cheese slathered in their signature chow-chow." - Baylea Jones

My favorite sandwich shop for decades! Plus, I lost my drivers license yesterday - panicked, then called this store just in case. They had it behind the counter, saved for me! I’m so grateful to the store’s employees who found and kept my license for me! Made my stupid mistake a non-event instead of a disaster!! Thanks a million!!!

We ordered lunch from Antone’s two days in a row to feed our estate sale crew, and everything was a hit! The sandwiches and salads were fresh, delicious, and enjoyed by everyone. On the second day, Carlos delivered our order—he was prompt, courteous, and a pleasure to work with. Whether you're ordering one sandwich or twenty, Antone’s offers great value with quick, friendly service. From our team to yours—thank you!

Today was a good one! I like the new thing you all are doing. Adding the ticket to the sandwich with the person's name is awesome! So let me send a Shout Out To "BRANDY" for making an A #1 Original sandwich for me. The bread was fresh. The chow chow spread was fresh and bright in flavor and color. All of the meats and cheeses were fresh had an incredible bite. Every bite was like a dream. Every pillowy bite of the bread was amazing. Before I could take a first pic of this amazing memorable creation , Brandy so lovingly put together, I had eaten half of it. I was so happy! My taste buds were cheering because the flavors were superb. Thank you guys so much. See y'all soon

Google
I have eaten at Antone's numerous times before. It was easier to find them when they had more locations. My go-to has always been the Original or the Super Original if I'm really hungry. I have tried the Tuna on a previous visit and it was okay. My most recent visits I ate the Cubano and the Tex Mex Cheesecake. The Cubano was okay but my favorite was the Tex-Mex Cheesecake. Both were made to order and hot off the grill. If you like Zappos chips they do carry them. The service is always good and the restaurant is clean.

Google
Sandwiches are good. You can actually find their classic sandwiches at Krogers all over Texas. I ordered the warm shrimp po boy. Customer service was slow, even though the store was empty.

Yelp
I think youre either a fan or not. I personally like the chow chow on the original and the taste and flavor are predictable and reliable. I like the super with extra meat. Perfect every time. Service was quick and restaurant is very clean every time weve gone. Bonus starbucks next door!!

Yelp
A few minutes before 7 I called to see if they were open. Closing in 4 minutes and they offered to do an order for pickup. Amazing. They made fresh sandwiches and met me at the door 10 minutes later. That's good customer service!!

Yelp
This was my second time in eating here and the reason we tried it again was that the first experience with the Oysters poboys was so heavenly. Unfortunately, something def has changed. From when we entered the restaurant, we could see the tables weren't bussed, napkins and food on the floor and basically didn't look like there was anyone cleaning up behind the crowd in the restaurant. We were starved and made an effort to get to this side of town and were pretty tired after a day of shopping so we decided just to stay put and decide to take our chances. As we were in the line, we were hopeful that the food would makeup for the messiness in the dining area. We ordered 3 simple sandwiches, 2 Vietnamese Bahn mi, 1 Cuban, truffle fries and 3 fountain drinks. The sandwiches came out quickly and the emphasis is on quickly and looked like they were sloppily made. According to my friend the Cuban was basically tasteless and cold. My friend shared that it tasted like next day sandwich left on the coldest shelf in the refrigerator. Ouch. I'm not going to go any further because we all know what that experience is like. When it came to my Bahn mi, I'm not sure I did the right thing by ordering a specialty sandwich like that in at a non Vietnamese restaurant. There literally was no filling. The sandwich was poor in presentation, barely any meat filling with no taste to the sandwich. I basically nibbled on two pieces of soggy bread. The only thing the three of us ate were the truffle fries and even that wasn't done right because there was only truffle on one side of the order LOL. Don't know how to explain it except that for a $45 plus lunch, there are much better places to eat at in the Galleria. PRO TIP: Handicap parking right in front of the restaurant

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Houston!!! come here at least once a week and it's always fast and delicious.

Noreen F.

Yelp
Always my favorite sandwich is the original. It's always fresh and delicious. I buy an extra one and put it in my freezer.

India R.

Yelp
Held my daughter's Prom Send-off and we ordered 2 sandwich trays were absolutely marvelous! I do recommend this place very accommodating and Carlos was amazing to work with over the phone!!

Jonah M.

Yelp
This is the worst place I've ever eaten. All my food came out cold and was chilling forever. Don't come here. The service is terrible because no one comes here. The ambiance looks nice but it's a crap whole. Don't come.

Yelp
Great food and quick service ! Will recommend to others as well. nice and clean inside too

Yelp
I love the Chow Chow. I have only had the super sub. Never disappoints. I will venture out and try other items this years

Tj P.

Yelp
These may have been OK back in the day, but they are just plain nasty now. I am being as nice as I can about this. Gag bad.

Kristin N.

Yelp
Eat here with caution. I picked up a sandwich out of the cooler and it was covered in mold. They would not refund me, only offer another sandwich - no thanks, don't think I'll be eating anything else from here.

Beth J.

Yelp
I placed an online order on Monday and called the restaurant 2 hours later to cancel it. The man I spoke to at the Antone's told me that a manager would call me back that night. Not only did I not receive a call back, but I left 2 messages and still did not receive a call. Unfortunately, it was delivered even though we didn't want it. The sad part is that I'm here for work all the time for work lunches and would have loved to try them next time, but I will definitely not be back. I cannot support businesses with such horrible customer service.

Quinn P.

Yelp
Some guy Eric on here complaining how "two slices and this is a sub" . Eric, well here in Texas we call that a fruitcake review you boujie boy! I'll die on this hill called Antones! Greatest thing you can chew on and digest.... Chow chow spread for life. -QP 32 Mustard Battalion

Yelp
Conveniently located off 610 and San Felipe this jewel serves up sandwich perfection every visit! We typically visit twice per month for our favorite sandwiches. The atmosphere is 5/5, very family friendly. The customer service is 5/5 stars. They are patient, friendly, and accommodating. The quality of food is 4.7/5. The food is fresh and combines flavors that are unique! If you are in the River Oaks or Galleria area and need a mid day pick me up, try Antone's! Your taste buds will thank you!

Yelp
Nice staff & food was good I got po boy ate it all up & my homie got something else not sure and it stood no chance !

Yelp
SO GOOD. Been buying Antone's for years when I used to work in downtown Houston, & now buy them at my local HEB & Kroger. The Turkey & Swiss is our fave, but we like the tuna too! The bread & butter pickle slices on both the turkey & tuna are so-o good! Antone sandwiches from the grocery stores are made a little on the dry side since mayonnaise has a shelf life. No worries for us ...we simply add our own mayo at home before eating. THANK YOU ANTONES for your delicious sandwiches, and congratulations on 60 Years in business!!

Yelp
This has always been the PoBoy sandwich to get. Great chow chow sauce and just enough cold cuts.
google avatar

Yelp
This is located somewhere I would never expect to find a good sandwich spot. The fries are a must have and the poboy with hush puppies are my fav. Treat yourself when in the area. Please believe me you will not regret it.

Yelp
I have heard about this place from a lot of people, I've seen the sandwiches in HEB. So today decided to take a trip. From beginning to end the service was great. All employees masks and gloves. Place really clean. Employees very respectful. Food was just a great as the service. I ordered the shrimp PO Boy. My only downfall was the bread got hard pretty fast so I just ate the shrimp. Was the sandwich was full of flavor. The flavored kettle chips were full of flavor and only wish I could buy the chips in multipacks to keep at home. We also ordered the Tex-Mex steak and cheese which I was told was full of flavor and didn't have not one downfall. Overall I will be recommending this place to family and friends. And I'm sure now that I have given them a shot I'm sure to continue to visit the actual shops and get sandwiches and not from HEB. Way to go......
google avatar

Sandra W.

Yelp
Excellent always! Been eating here for years and years. Always consistent. My only criticism would be that I cannot buy any sandwiches at Kroger or other locations WITHOUT THE CHOW CHOW. Even if you scrape it off you can still taste it. Otherwise nothing like sticking under the broiler for a few minutes to get it nice and toasty!!
google avatar

Wilfredo M.

Yelp
I go in at the start of lunch time and am in front of the counter for about 5 mins and the employees don't acknowledge me they carry on in conversation as if I'm not there. I order the Tex-mex cheesesteak and it comes out relatively quick. It was bland. Not sure if the season the meat or what, but it didn't have any flavor. The only thing that had flavor was the bread and cheese. Not worth the $13 I spent on a sandwich. Maybe go to potbelly or subway instead.

Connie G.

Yelp
I used to frequent Antone's on TC Jester quite often. Today I went through the drive through and for the 4th time in a few months my order was wrong, When I looked in the bag and showed her it was on the wrong sandwich bread, she took it to make a new one and I repeated what I had ordered. She argued with me about my original order so I told her to fix it or keep it. She practically threw it at me. When I opened the bag at my office to eat, I did not get what I ordered. There were no condiments whatsoever, which I added. Bread, meat and cheese. Spite?? The manager at this location is wonderful, but he really needs to do something about his crew. They do not understand what you tell them at all if it varies from their regular menu. I think I am done with them.
google avatar

Elijah-Paul W.

Yelp
Do not miss this gem. Everything was delicious from the bread to the hot fries. We ordered the shrimp Po boy and the Cubano with garlic parmesan fries. It was some next level **** made me want to cuss. You have to try this!
google avatar

Cynthia O.

Yelp
Try their new Bonh Mi Sandwitch and it was delicious, with Vodoo chips and side of Tanouli. Bread was perfectfly toasted and plenty spicy withou jalapenos. It is a must try. Will be baxk.

Yelp
I was able to order 40+ sandwiches for a volunteer event just a day before I needed them. I know... so last minute of me to do. Antone's quickly responded to my catering inquiry email; I then made the order over the phone and picked up the boxed lunches first thing the next morning at this San Felipe location. Staff kindly helped me load my car, too. The boxed lunches averaged about $8 each; each came with a poboy, chips and a cookie. They were a hit and I'd certainly use Antone's again for lunch catering needs.

Laura T.

Yelp
Freshly made sandwiches. Hushpuppies have jalapeño so more on heat than sweet but delicious. Gentleman at the front took our order over the phone and was ready quickly. He also gave us bottled drinks instead of fountain as a courtesy! Overall great place with great customer service and food. we will be back!

Yelp
Well well well. Take a seat and let's discuss. As a native Houstonian, I'd always seen Antone's around but had never experienced it. Today however, I was doing a little shopping at David's Bridal next door so I decided to stop on it for a quick lunch. I'm not going to pretend and say I didn't read the reviews but I wanted to try for myself! It was lunch time and they were busy but quick. I order the shrimp poboy, a drink and a cookie. SEVENTEEN AMERICAN DOLLARS. I am no stranger to paying a little more for good food so I moved on. My food came out quickly, fresh and hot. I tried a french fry and while it was a nice potato filled concoction, it needed salt. Little did I know, I would need to keep the salt shaker in my hand. The bread of the poboy was nice, light and fresh and before I ate I had read there weren't enough shrimp but I thought people were exaggerating. They weren't. I had maybe 5 pieces of whole shrimp and three breaded crumbs on about an 8-inch sandwich.... for $17 in the year of our Lord. Really Antone? If I could get over the lack of seasoned fries and the 5 shrimp, I could not get over the shrimp tasting like nothing. I bit into a poboy of air. NO FLAVOR. It was a lettuce sandwich with some lightly sprinkled shrimp with no flavor at all. And the remoulade sauce tasted like nothing as well. Now, I'm not one to need over seasoned food but it didn't taste like anything. I was sorely disappointed. But, I'm not done. I thought that I did have a redeeming cookie...WRONG. HOW IS A COOKIE TASTELESS???? come on. A cookie. Tasting like 3 day old water. I digress, I will NEVER try this place again and I usually give shops 2 times before I say something but I have seen enough. You try it at your own risk. You've been warned.
google avatar

Niecy F.

Yelp
We both had the catfish po'boy. It lacked fish. In fact, it was mostly full of lettuce. The sandwich was cut in half and one of my halves barely had any fish at all. We didn't receive our hush puppies with our meal so we had to go ask for them. My brother had the red beans & rice, but thought they were bland. I would've given them a three, but I witnessed one of the workers cutting a man's sandwich with no gloves on, then taking it out to him. The restaurant was clean. The food was okay, but it left a lot to be desired. The cashier was really nice and made sure we were taken care of when we brought up not getting our hush puppies. The woman who forgot them apologized.

Jason K.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches. I asked for some roast beef and wanted and open platter but decided to try it as they intended and it was perfect - the meat, cheese, pickets, sauce in harmony. High recommended!
google avatar

Caleb H.

Yelp
If you're into average tasting sandwiches then I will say this is a place you'll be happy with. I ordered the Italian I sandwich. I did not think this sandwich stood out in comparison to other places. I tried some of the cubano sandwich my friend had and it was loaded with whatever dressing they put in it and I can tell you that takes away from the flavor. Either way. Very AVERAGE.

Ray L.

Yelp
Anyone's Po Boy sandwich is a Must stop when I am traveling through Houston. Love the blend of flavors, and the chow-chow brings it all together. I usually have to buy 3 as I head back home, 1 to eat in the car and 2 for later once I am home!

Nia T.

Yelp
Was trying them out since we live close by & noticed a "PoBoys" restaurant. We are from Nola, so we were very hopeful. I ordered two shrimp poboys. There were literally 6 SHRIMP on each poboy. They really stood there & cooked 12 shrimp, then threw them on a small piece of bread lol. The pictures do show about 6 shrimp, but we had no idea it would actually only be 6 shrimp. The bread was LESS THAN 6 INCH long, the shrimp HAD NO SEASONING/NO FLAVOR whatsoever, they weren't properly deveined... We were on the go, so I didn't have time to go in & return the food. We just took it as a lost & plan to never return. I guess I never see anybody in the parking lot for a reason. Disappointing, but there's other places.
google avatar

Gini K.

Yelp
I was born and raised in the area but moved away. When I come home to visit parents I always go pick up sandwiches. I went and picked some up today and was sadly disappointed. They have changed ingredients and the sandwiches no longer taste the same. Barely and meat and cheese and they tasted awe full. I will no longer being keeping this tradition
google avatar

Harvey B.

Yelp
Talk about fast service, wow. Great food at an even better price. I truly enjoyed this dinning experience. Great location and easy to find. I had the chicken gumbo and a shrimp Po boy. Awesome!
google avatar

Shanay L.

Yelp
So very thankful that they were open on the days of the ice storm in Houston. But the customer service was horrible. I wasn't greeted when I went to place my order. I stood at the register waiting for about 1 minute while the cashier chuckled with other people behind the counter. Overall the food was good but there wasn't enough shrimp on my po'boy to really enjoy.
google avatar

Roxanne R.

Yelp
We jumped by here real quick one day for a lunch break. It's not a HUGE place but definitely plenty of seating for everyone. It's a pleasant little sandwich shop. We were surprised how quickly and well they handled the lunch rush! The store was packed by the time we had sat down, but there wasn't much or a wait as people ordered. Food was prepared fast, but if you are in more of a rush they have pre-made sandwich and salad options that were really good! The shrimp po boy with fries was a good option, also.
google avatar

Ernest G.

Yelp
Great sandwiches like no other! Been going here for years the one off Tuam, the two that were on Kirby haven't been to Heights location yet will go soon.

Anthony J.

Yelp
Great lunch spot! Found this place while visiting Houston. Had a Greek salad and an Original Po'Boy sandwich. Food was really good and service was fast and friendly. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
Well I was excited because of the hype.... But it was a huge let down. Ordered the "premium roast beef" toasted. Well I don't know about the hot subs but they obviously pre make all of these sandwiches and keep them very cold because even toasted the center was ice cold. So your basically paying 10 bucks for a cold sandwich you could get at Walmart or target in the deli isle. If you toast it it kind of makes it worse cause it's lukewarm just past the bread then gets cold in the center. I'm astonished and disappointed to say you can get a fresher sandwich at subway, so save your money.
google avatar

Ray G.

Yelp
I had an oyster po'boy and a cup of red beans and rice. With the nicely battered and flavorful oysters on bread that is lightly crispy on the outside with an airy middle, it was everything I'd expect for a good po'boy. It would've been a great po'boy, but they were too generous with the Cajun mayo. (next time, I will order it "easy on the sauce") The red beans and rice is also very good with the right amount of heat and authentic flavors. The fries were served crispy and hot and although I am not a fan of hush puppies, theirs are excellent. The service was prompt and genuinely friendly.

Yelp
I manage a hotel around the corner from the Antones Galleria (4520 San Felipe, Houston TX). My team orders from this location weekly. We refer our guests to this location almost daily. I placed an order for pickup today 12.17.20. #1-at pickup the staff was so rude. No 'hello', no 'how can I help you' - just barked at---that I was standing in the wrong location. (I was standing under the sign PICK UP as directed on the order page). #2 When I returned to the hotel with my $75 order several items were missing. Called the store. They hung up. Called back, no answer. Called back and had to explain to 3 different people the situation. I only wanted the account credited for the difference. Disappointed in the service, the delivery, and the follow up. You are forcing us to reconsider using and referring this location.
google avatar

Carolina B.

Yelp
I really liked my meal here! The staff is very friendly too! Location is prime, lots of parking, nicely lit and clean inside. I got the shrimp po'boy with fries, hush puppies and some red beans & rice. I had to add salt to the red beans & rice, which I NEVER add salt to almost anything. The bread on the po'boy was excellent--fresh, crispy and delicious! I could see how a lot of people could argue there wasn't enough shrimp, but for me it was fine. However, I wouldn't have complained if there was a bit more. The fries and hush puppies were good, but not mind-blowing. I'd love to try the "Piggy" classic as well as the roast beef and Italian sandwiches--will be back for sure!
google avatar

Joan V.

Yelp
NOT THE SAME. Does anyone have the recipe for the original chow chow by Antones? I was so devastated when I saw a big ORIGINAL posted on the po' boys from Antones at H.E.B., and then the sandwich was totally different. Supposedly all of the (two) original Antones are both gone, so who knows who has made these sandwiches. They are OK, but theres a sweetness in there that wasn't there before. I can only guess it's the chow chow (which originally was spelled "caio" or somesuch), which I don't remember having red pepper in it. If you'll open the sandwich, there's definitely something red in there, and the chow chow is the only thing in the list of ingredients that seems not to fit, although I also think there's too much mayo. Im devastated. Anyone else? Joan Vogan Sugar Land
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Nice space and a lot of menu choices. We ordered 2 catfish po boys and a shrimp po boy. Food included fries. The sandwiches had plenty of lettuce, tomatoes, and Cajun mayo but very little fish or shrimp. Disappointing. Not sure if we'll return.
google avatar

Carolyn C.

Yelp
Antone's is a Houston institution and serves the best sandwiches - the chow chow is seriously magic. The classic original Po Boy is a savory bargain. Fresh, soft bread elevates any sandwich, but the addition of toasting the round, sesame seeded muffuletta roll (spread with house made olive salad made with the famous chow chow) makes the muffuletta sublime. The friendly staff deserve kudos and generous tips for serving the lunch crowd with enthusiasm and efficiency.

Laura C.

Yelp
This place is so disappointing, it's ruined my childhood memories of a once great place. The bread of the Po'Boys are always so soggy and taste stale. The meats taste old. The food has gone downhill and will never return back.
google avatar

Leticia A.

Yelp
I've passed this place so many times while going to Target but it took my boyfriend and Bun B for me to give this place a try. Well Bun B came out with a "Hot Wang Sandwhich" there and my boyfriend just had to try it so we ordered two hot wang sandwiches and with the first bite I was in heaven. Will definitely be back to try other sandwiches.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Antone's is the stuff of my childhood and Chow Chow was my drug! But it has changed over time and now they serve hot poboys and other items like french fries. When I went recently, the place was pretty dead. It seems to be a guy restaurant, as I was the only female in the whole place and almost every guy was by himself. I ordered a fried shrimp poboy which was adequate but not great. The french fries were pretty yummy though. Good crisped bread, definitely a plus. The quick time from order to food makes this place an ideal spot for a super quick lunch. I can't see anything dragging me back here but convenience.

Ross S.

Yelp
If they would go to the trouble to prepare what you order, this would be a 5 star. Historically when you order a toasted original, they would make a fresh original and toast it. Last two times I have been to this location, they just take a pre made and well refrigerated original and toast it , with the result being that the sandwich is still very cold in the middle and tastes about as fresh as the ones they use to sell at Rice Epicurean. Just lazy help there.
google avatar

Derek K.

Yelp
Customer service was poor today! Complete the order from beginning to end...including BAGGING the order that was just PAID for by your patronizing guest
