The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"A glass display box showcases the crumb-coated dainties on offer at this matchbox-size shop in a humble south Kolkata neighborhood. There are spicy croquettes of boiled eggs sheathed in minced meat, thick slabs of breaded fish, and more. The fish fry is legendary, but the standout dish here is the fish roll: plump paupiettes of bhetki stuffed with a sprightly mixture of minced fish and prawns, rolled in crumbs, and fried to a crisp. Apanjan opens in the afternoon and closes at 9 p.m., but the best items sell out early." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

We dropped by Apanjan and went straight for their classics – Fish & Chips and the legendary Fish Kaviraji. And honestly, it lived up to the hype. Fish & Chips: The fillet was perfectly fried – golden, crispy on the outside but soft, flaky, and fresh on the inside. The fries were hot and crunchy, not oily, and paired well with their tangy dip. Easily one of the better Fish & Chips you’ll get in the city. Fish Kaviraji: This was the star of the show. The coating was light, crispy, and airy, with that signature kaviraji crunch that melts into the tender fish inside. Every bite was nostalgic, full of authentic Kolkata street-food charm but served with care. The ambience is simple and no-nonsense, but that’s exactly what makes Apanjan so special – the food does all the talking. Service was quick, staff were polite, and the prices are pretty reasonable for the quality. ✅ Verdict: If you’re craving classic Bengali-style fried fish with a modern twist, Apanjan should be on your list. The Fish Kaviraji is a must-try and the Fish & Chips will leave you satisfied. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (4.5/5)

A spot well hidden in the alley of south kolkata, but not a hidden gem at all. Apanjan, known for their fish fry and other fry items, has been serving Kolkata Bengalis for decades and their legacy still continues. Visited this fry corner and tried their bestseller item large fish fry, accompanied with Fish Worly and chicken fry. The fish fry doesn't need any explanation (taste wise). They use vetki fish fillet, fresh and juicy, bursts a bomb of fishy flavour and freshness, highlighted with mustard sauce and freshly cut Onions. Extremely delicious and flavourful item. The chicken fry was also very good in taste, the entire fry was made with a chicken piece, but to my disappointment, it came with a large piece of bone in it. As for the fish Worly, it was much more similar to a batter fry, very oily and crunchy, the amount of oil somehow extinguishes the craving. Overall experience was pretty good, will definitely visit again to try their other hot selling items like fish singara, fish wanton, fish kachoris, etc. Only one drawback that I felt was they have only Cash payment, no UPI or online payment option is available here. So in case you plan to taste multiple items, do carry cash 😜.

One of the most popular spots in Kolkata for fish fry. The Bhetki fry here is delicious - a thick, flaky piece of fish with a crispy coating that lives up to its reputation. Prices are on the higher side, and there is no seating available, so it’s more of a quick stop place than a dine in experience. Still, worth trying if you are a fish fry lover.

There's no place to sit nothing. It's just a kerbside shop with barely any frontage. Given the rates of the items were quite high no doubt. We ordered Diamond Fish fry priced at Rs.260 and Bhetki Samosa priced at Rs. 80

Tucked away in the bustling heart of South Kolkata, this iconic fish fry shop has been serving up crispy, golden bites of joy for decades – and it still holds its charm. A must-visit for any street food lover or anyone wanting to taste the real Kolkata.

This is the best place for fish based snacks like fish fry, fish roll, fish pakora, fish kochuri etc in south Calcutta. Pure vetki fish is used and quality and quantity is absolutely fantastic. I had fish roll, egg devil and fish moghlai parota and all are delicious.

I ordered from Apanjan in Kolkata with high expectations, especially because it’s known for its fish fry. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The fish fry I received was far from what one would expect—too oily, with the crust soggy instead of crisp, and the fish inside didn’t taste fresh. For a place that prides itself on this signature dish, it really missed the mark. Adding to that, some of the other items we ordered felt mismatched and poorly put together, as if the flavors and combinations weren’t balanced. Instead of comfort and authenticity, the food felt rushed and inconsistent. Ordered Two Fish Fry and a Fish Roll Received one Fish Fry
