"Established in 1940 under the name "Jake's", this charming art supply store has seen a lot of change in the neighborhood but has managed to remain a fixture on this popular little stretch of Dekalb. The shop was once a go-to of Patti Smith's in the 60's, as mentioned in her memoir, and you can almost imagine that time and place when exploring the dated interior. Even though it feels a bit rundown inside, it only adds to the charm—the shop's inventory is modern and well-stocked, catering to and reflecting the eclectic nature of the studies of the Pratt students who most frequent it today." - Makewell

Overall great store with an awesome selection and staff. Yet the abysmal adherence to opening hours is endlessly frustrating. It is common for the store to open 30min+ past stated times. As a customer who would prefer to support a local business, I request the posting of realistic operating hours. Doing so would make it much easier to support this your wonderful small business.

It was great to see an old style art store. Sam was very helpful. I purchased new old stock electric eraser. He gave me a great deal and went way beyond too make me a very satisfied customer. If you're looking for great customer service see Sam...and shop at Apple Art. Thank you Sam!

I saw this place on Google and thought it looked like a good place to get some cross stitch supplies. Online it said the store opens at 11am, so I went over and turns out they can’t tell time. I showed up at 11:20 and the doors were locked, no employees in sight. You should update your hours if you’re not going to be open even though the sign on your door clearly states that you open at 11am.

Excellent quality materials and tools. The store is small but the stock is generally quite good. It is a bit pricey but that is primarily due to the higher quality stock they carry. The staff is helpful and know the materials.

Sam is a really pleasant guy, and he offers a student discount. The customer service is unparalleled and there's a great selection supplies. Specifically useful to the school of architecture right nearby, the selection of basswood, chipboard, and foam is much more diverse than the local Blick, so go here and support local business!

Google
It’s the WORST place ever. I hardly review stores, but this place is the worst art supply in New York City. The staff who seems like the son of the owners, very not nice. You can’t get a refund if you paid with credit cards. And it’s so overpriced and price always changes by the staff. 12pcs set of markers that is $25 online and almost the same price in Blick store, is $58 in this store and it’s discounted price he said. I strongly recommend not to go to this store.

Support your local independent art store - this one rules. Has all the things. Just off the Parsons Campus. Great Pizza across the street.

Yelp
A nice article about the store in the NYT http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/02/28/nyregion/apple-art-supplies-in-brooklyn-is-hub-for-matte-knives-and-gossip.html?referer=&_r=0

Yelp
Sometimes, whenever I'm in Brooklyn and I happen to run out of paints or wood for like the 34th time, Apple Art is the store I would usually go to. Even though I find some of their prices a bit expensive, the store prices are better than of the Pratt Store or of the newest art supply store, Utrecht. Although the store space is somewhat small, they have a wide selection of art materials, especially wood. So if you're an architecture student, this is the store for you! And Sam, the manager, is very helpful in helping you find what you need. He truly knows his stuff.

Yelp
Their hours of operation are a joke. Twice I've tried going there at 9:30 am when they are supposed to already be open but they aren't. Very disappointed. If they want to open later then they should change their hours.

Yelp
I concur with most everyone here in that they are overpriced (by quite a lot) but that said - they do have an amazing variety of stuff and if it's last minute and desperate - this is your spot....plus - consider this. X+Y less than X+Z+A+B X - art supply Y - Markup at Apple Z - Subway fare A - Time B - fighting like a salmon swimming upstream in the hell of canal street to go to Pearl

Yelp
I LOVE SAM. He is the reason this store is amazing. I was a grad student at Pratt. He was my savior then and continues to be my savior today. I remember this one time, it was the night before a big presentation. I somehow managed to screw up the cardboard for my model. I was freaking out. My studio partner immediately told me to call Sam. Even though it was 15 mins past store closing time, Sam answered. I asked him if he had any large cardboard left. He said "No." I almost died. But then he said "Wait wait, I just threw out a large piece of packaging cardboard earlier that day." He told me to come by and pick it up. The cardboard was enormous and pristine. It was better than what I could have bought at any art store. I tried to pay him, but he wouldn't accept. Ever so grateful. AND TODAY!!! Today he really saved me. Today, I broke my glasses--- completely broke the hinges off. I'm legally blind (my contact prescription is -9.5). I had no idea what to do. I was far away from home. I had to go to work. (Luckily a friend was with me to help me navigate.) After having a moment of panic, I calmed down and thought "SAM." Now, it's been two years since I've graduated. TWO YEARS since I've seen Sam. I did not expect him to remember me at all. He remembered me! Not only did he remember me, after I told him about my predicament, without question he went straight to fixing my glasses. He spent the next hour fixing my glasses. He essentially built new frames for my lenses. (That's how broken they were.) I tried to pay for the materials at least. He refused. He kept refusing any form of payment. (I eventually managed to sneak a lunch from Choice for him. How can anyone refuse Choice?) I know this place is overpriced, but for this level of customer service--- well, this can't be described as customer service anymore... it's WELL beyond. I frequented Sam's back when I was student because he always had the materials I needed. And these days, I will continue to recommend him to everyone.

Yelp
I was surprised by how much different it was from my last visit, which was admittedly years ago. I am a textile artist primarily so this was not really my kind of supply store. Very little in the way of craft type stuff. And the staff were unhelpful, borderline,no definitely rude and extremely unfriendly. And I am the kind of person that even mean people tend to be friendly or at least not unpleasant with! I will not return unless desperate for some bizarre reason for a some graphic art type blah blah whatever. blah. I normally love all sorts of art stores. hmphhh

Yelp
The person who was working here was nice and helpful--but the store was out of what I needed. Also, when my purchases were rung up, I asked about a student discount and he looked like I had "caught" him, which is kind of silly--he'd probably get more customers if he didn't treat the discount as if it were a secret. In the end, I had to walk over to the Pratt art store anyway, to get the items that they didn't have here. And I saw the same exact paint that I had bought at Apple, for wayyy cheaper, even before Pratt's 10% student discount. So, if I'm really in a bind and can't travel the extra distance to Pratt, I guess I might come here again. Otherwise, I'd rather pay less and go someplace where I know they will have what I need.

Yelp
Sweetest store. Walked in vaguely wanting an easel and paint so I could set up to have my art out in my living room. I walked in and say I'm helped me with everything. He was so sweet he directed me to a cheap easel and made me feel less silly than I thought I would've surrounded by all the Pratt kids. The best! Love supporting local!!

Daniel Z.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices and really convenient for Pratt students. Sam has helped me with so many projects, definitely would recommend this store to other students

Yelp
This place is nice. I stopped being an artist and got a real job two years ago. Then I randomly got a commission and had to rush to the store to buy fresh supplies. The employee saved me money and told me what to get so I didn't have to spend so much, instead of letting me buy a bunch of things I didn't really need. He put a customer over profit, which I thought was cool. Is it still expensive? Of course. I'd go to Michael's or Amazon for cheapos and if I didn't want to support small businesses.

Mo S.

Yelp
Apple Art, oh Apple Art. Many a Pratt student has been forced to buy some last-minute supplies from you.... that's why you keep your prices to high but still remain in business. The store has a great stock of supplies considering how small it is, and the staff is usually quite knowledgeable.... I'd still rather trek elsewhere for the goods.

Wenji J.

Yelp
The worker was very helpful and friendly, they have everything I need specially drafting supplies.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Great place. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Some items are slightly more expensive than Utrecht, some are cheaper. Learn which are which. The staff will order what you need and are very helpful to get what you need in stock.

Shane D.

Yelp
Universally loathed by pretty much anyone I know that's shopped there. They don't take refunds, they don't take checks, they often make up prices on the spot and are surly towards the very people who should be their meal ticket. Oh yeah, and their prices are high since they know anyone coming in there probably has no other choice. I can't think of anything good to say about these clowns. Avoid.

Chris C.

Yelp
The prices aren't really that much better than the Pratt store and their cliental I've found to be generally rude at times. This place isn't bad and they're open a little later than the Pratt store if your running short on time but ultimately the place is a bit disappointing.

Yelp
The owner of the store was very kind to customers. He seems to know many things about art suppies, it was great to ask. The store looks very small from out side but when you go inside it was pretty big and nicely organized.

Joe Z.

Yelp
I don't know much about art stores, but this place seems to have a decent selection of acrylics and canvasses. Pretty light on oils and brushes, though. I couldn't find another art store around, so this will have to do.

Nick W.

Yelp
I love this place and it's rustic build, this place is special with a diverse supply. Kind of reminds me of "Howl's Moving Castle".

jonathan b.

Yelp
like the other reviews the prices seem expensive, but then it's the nearest store to the architecture building and i only ever buy chipboard or papers, and it's especially good when you need to build a model in short time. But again, it's a bit of a cold place, the discount (as mentioned before) is never mentioned, nor do they ask you for your ID (i guess they just think everyone coming in is a student? and i'll have to check my receipts now). And at times they seem to wing the prices. If there were another store around i'd go there, but for last minute i'm not going to trek up to the Pratt Store.

M.H K.

Yelp
For a savvy person like my self,it is only my opinion, this place is unreasonablely EXPENSIVE. Prices were much higher than I expected.
