On the Grid : Arami

"If you're looking for the best, highest quality sushi & sashimi, Arami is the place to go. Set in a warm, garden-like atmosphere, you won't find crazy rolls drenched in sauces here - only simple, beautiful dishes that celebrate the ingredients, letting all of the flavors shine through as they're intended. Some favorites include the Toro Tartare Bite (a little piece of heaven), the octopus and the Hamachi Maguro Ebi. They also have amazing cocktails, ramen, and if you're a vegetarian or vegan, a whole nigiri/maki menu just for you!" - Serafini Creative

The Best Spots to Eat at Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) | Eater Chicago

"Fans of the beloved West Town sushi spot that closed after a 14-year run can still watch chefs carve fresh fish while enjoying maki, poke, plenty of vegetarian options, and a selection of sake and cocktails — a compact airport outpost that recreates the restaurant’s sushi-focused experience." - Jeffy Mai

Where To Eat At Midway Airport - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Located in Concourse A, Food Hall Arami is a relatively well-known West Town sushi spot, and like the original location, the Midway outpost has solid food at a hefty price. The menu is much more limited but there are reliable standbys like spicy tuna rolls and poke bowls, plus a sake bar. And if raw fish at an airport gives you as much pause as the nine infants at the gate for your trans-continental flight, there are things like teriyaki chicken and tofu-based dishes, too." - veda kilaru

Google
Do not recommend. I ordered poke salmon, but they waited till I paid to tell me they only had poke tuna available. Kept the tuna sealed in a separate container when they handed me the bowl so that I had already walked off to my table before opening the fish solo cup and smelled how fishy and old it was. My brother had the sushi tray with no complaints. My veggies were fresh enough so 2 stars instead of 1.

Sometimes it is important to let the readers know not just what to try, rather what needs to be avoided. #Arami at Midway Airport Chicago, is one of those. I ordered Spicy Tuna Maki. The lady at the cash register asked me to find it (she couldn’t) and bring it to the cash register. That shows the training on courtesy. Coming to food itself, neither the rice and fish quality was good nor the shaved ginger was fresh; it was turned dark brown. #chicago #sushi #fastfood #ChicagoMidwayInternationalAirport #travel #food

Google
The food and service is excellent! I do not know what the previous person experienced. I, along with everyone else around me, paid after we finished eating. This Black-owned business is crushing it. They helped me make my poke diabetic-friendly with much flavour. I look forward to coming back again with my return flight. My favourite bartender is Lerin!

Google
Breakfast bowl was able to be made gluten free enough (no biscuit) to be celiac safe! ALL staff were friendly! Well mixed breakfast beverages. Good coffee.

Google
Pretty clean bar and food for grab and go vibe inside of the airport with shared dining tables with other restaurants. Service was okay. They seemed understaffed and made people order food at the other end of the bar. Pretty good healthy build a bowl lunch.

Google
Greatest sausage, egg, bagel breakfast sandwich! Also, the seasoned potatoes with bell peppers and onions are everything! This is all that’s left for the photo! It was so good!

Google
Not bad for an airport rice bowl! I dropped by during a layover at MDW for their Spicy Tofu Bowl (fully vegan friendly). It was a mix of white rice, red onions, bean sprouts, and tofu topped with green onions and a tangy vinaigrette. I was impressed with how much tofu was given and that it was actually spicy. Definitely a good kick without it feeling completely burn-your-tongue. I was a bit surprised the tofu was cold since I’m sure the meat options were likely heated, but a toss inside the bowl with the rice should heat it right up. For $15 with tax, I’m satisfied with this airport lunch.

Justin Pinchback

Google
Sushi stop while you are in MDW. The grab and go is fresh and the bar is just fine.

Scott H.

Yelp
Both the teriyaki beef bowl and seaweed salad were excellent. Service was prompt and there was ample seating nearby. Definitely worth walking to terminal A for a bite, even if flying from B/C.

Yelp
Decided to eat here during my layover because they were decorated for Pride and a sign says they're a Black-owner business. I wasn't expecting it to also be good because fast food-style American Japanese so rarely is. I ordered the Teri Salmon Bowl, and it's DELICIOUS. Great quality salmon, and they don't skimp on the seasonings. Plus, it's not too heavy or greasy for a pre-flight meal. Would eat here again.

Yelp
The trio maki roll was really good. They have this chili oil sauce on top that was both refreshing and spicy, which I think is a really hard balance to create. I will say it's overpriced (airport food typically is), and I was a bit peeved that they charged me approximately $3 for a cup of hot water. Service was good, but there was a slower start. Their miso soup was really small and average in taste.
google avatar

Miriam W.

Yelp
Really quite excellent sushi, which was a nice surprise for Midway. I had the trio maki and a miso soup. The maki roll was delicious, with super fresh fish and a yummy mayo based sauce. The miso soup had no tofu in it, and I like tofu, plus it was a bit bland. I'll skip that next time. Worth the trek to concourse A, even though I was flying from B.

Yelp
Best airport food I've had and considering it was a poke bowl that's saying a lot. The fish was fresh and they were generous with the avocado. I would have given them 5 stars however I didn't like that on the menu they don't explicitly say that the rice is extra which is a little weird considering most poke bowls come with rice and they also didn't ask me if I wanted it with rice or not. I just found out about the extra charge at the register. When I asked about it the bartender who was working at the register shrugged his shoulders and said something along the lines: "I'm new here, I don't know". Despite this I think it was an overall great poke bowl so I would come back.

Amanda S.

Yelp
The food was really good and was ready in a timely manner. The prices fair. The service was good as well. I will definitely stop here again while at this airport. It exceeded my expectations as a lot of airport restaurants aren't the best.

Marissa G.

Yelp
The level of professionalism is lacking at this establishment even from the manager! M mom and i came here to grab a breakfast bowl. after sending $40 we asked for a small cup of hot water for my infant to warm her milk. they wanted $3 for some warm water because thats the cost of the cup. we were then laughed at by the cashier and by the manager. This occurred at around 7:30 am on July 17th. we are supportive of black owned business but the attitude we received and the dry $40 breakfast is not worth it! we went to the business next door and they happily gave us a cup of warm water for my baby. in the future, have some compassion for people especially paying customers. because of this, we will never return and we hope no one else does. your staff will chase people away with their nasty attitude. perhaps hire better people to raise your brand rather than bring it down!

Yelp
Update: I guess the owner has never heard of the expression "nothing to write home about" before replying back. Maybe you should use your phone to actually Google things before taking things literally. I gave a decent review but now it's just 1 star. I'm not sure if the account for Midway was hacked because they were very professional in their responses at their other location.

Yelp
Service was absolutely fantastic. I asked to see what the teriyaki beef looked like. After the nice lady showed me, she asked if I wanted to try a sample. I did try it and it was fine plus I was extra hungry after flying in from CA. I decided to order the beef teriyaki bowl. I was pleasantly surprised to see what they added to the bowl. There was sautéed mushrooms and onions, takuan (pickled radishes), shoga (ginger), green onions, and sesame seeds. The bowl was really good with the authentic Japanese toppings. My only complaint would be the amount of oil at the bottom of my bowl from the beef. I managed to finish the bowl while my sister and nieces waited in line for a burger at another location. I'll definitely stop here again when flying through Chicago.

Julian M.

Yelp
Constantly changing prices. The employees do not know how to charge for what items are given. I frequent this restaurant a lot as I travel through the Chicago airport very often. This place was a great find; but has changed into a poor run restaurant.
google avatar

Damian R.

Yelp
Very clean excellent service. Great food selection. Highly recommend the Teri salmon. Try it with a Moor"s imperial porter.

Heather A.

Yelp
Had a veggie breakfast bowl with spinach eggs potatoes and a biscuit. It was good! And healthy. The woman working at the counter was friendly and helpful. Overall good healthy breakfast food while traveling.

Yelp
It's been a couple of years since I was last here at this restaurant (multiple times in this airport). My impression has not changed much though this time I had a different meal. Nice people and fast service but the food is just ok. But a nice diversion from the burgers and such in many of the other restaurants here.

Camille R.

Yelp
Food - spicy tofu bowl was a very generous portion! Great taste. Cool tofu, warm rice. Good flavor. Medium spicy. Service was friendly and quick Ambiance - to go with nice sitting area in the airport Price pretty good compared to other options nearby
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Everything here is double what it would cost wherever you're from as you'd expect. The California roll was around $11, and the Beef bowl was nearly $16. The bowl wasn't bad, and the California roll was nothing special.
google avatar

Melanie A.

Yelp
Pretty decent airport food, with unique options compared to the regular quick service. I really appreciate that they have several gluten free options - as someone with celiac, that's a rare find in an airport! However, the food is clearly prepared en masse with no options to customize what you get (example - the teriyaki beef comes with onion and mushrooms automatically mixed in). Whether you order at the bar or the quick service line, all of the food is served right there from warmers that don't taste very fresh. You have to get the food and then stand in another separate line down the bar to pay. The food was good in a pinch, but I definitely wouldn't eat here by choice outside of the airport setting.

Yelp
My jaw dropped when I got rung up. Before tax, this signature roll is $20.19. Super overpriced for average quality. It's the only sushi spot in this airport. They have poke bowls which look way more filling and tasty.

Lynn J.

Yelp
Surprisingly delicious ... I ordered the salmon teriyaki with the rice. The cooked salmon was very fresh. The rice was also fresh, green onions were added and a teriyaki sauce. I paid for additional kimchi which gave it an awesome flavor. The kimchi is delicious. I'm now going to have to go to the other location because I won't be able to go to the airport unless I'm traveling., This dish was so good. It's unforgettable. The best thing I've had in a long time and it's pretty healthy.

Joy C.

Yelp
I ordered the teriyaki beef bowl with a miso soup. The miso soup has fresh green onions and seaweed, and is hot. The broth is very bland. Teriyaki beef bowl is filled with pickled Dicon radish, Beni shōga, rice, sautéed mushrooms/onions and chop beef. The radish and ginger are OK. The rice is a little overcooked, and the beef has a sauce over it, but I cannot taste the teriyaki sauce that was squirted on very well, but I can taste the beef tallow. The staff was careful and proficient. The service was excellent and efficient. But I can taste beef tallow.

Yelp
Stopped by here for a quick lunch. I was hangry so I started off with spicy edamame- which wasn't spicy at all to me. Then the poke bowl - it was good but not my favorite and the avocado was missing. (Insert sad face) Then the absolute star of the show was the spicy salmon roll! So good I had to order another one! The salmon was so fresh. Def will stop by here again if I'm ever in Chicago airport

Mutale M.

Yelp
-Service is terrible -I ended up waiting 15 min to get my order taken and no one checked in -Food is mid and suspicious They don't have cocktail menu so I asked the bartender for a sex on the beach and it was non alcoholic even though I asked for a cocktail

Yelp
Fish and Tell A sushi bar in the middle of Chicago's MWI?? Seems a bit farcical, but I assure you they do run a legit operation here--as this is the offshoot of the similarly named eight-time Michelin Bib Gourmand award-winning restaurant also located in Chi-Town. I had time for a quick meal in-between flights and wanted something light and healthy for my 5hr flight back to SJ, and some fish sounded like it would hit the spot. The Good: *I ended up ordering the Salmon Poke Bowl ($13), and the fish quality was excellent. The avocado was also really fresh and perfectly ripe, and I also really enjoyed the pickled beets. *Price was fantastic for the quality--and considering it was in an airport! The Meh: *The base of the poke bowl was basically all bean sprouts?! I was expecting rice or hell even just greens would've been fine, but it was a shit-ton of bean sprouts. I mean, I like sprouts just fine, but just not that much. *Service was very gruff and mumbly. We mostly communicated through hand gestures and grunts. Very primal. The Ugly: *According to the menu, there's supposed to be some kind of sauce, but there was none. It desperately needed a sauce in order to tie the whole bowl together, as it was severally underseasoned that way. Fortunately, they provided a few packets of soy sauce, so that def helped the situation. TLDR: For the price and fish quality this place def gets a thumbs up--esp considering it's in an airport.

Courtney C.

Yelp
Truly stellar, especially for airport food. I had the spicy tofu rice bowl and it's delicious! A few other veggie options as well. Tofu was some of the best I've ever had in general, too.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Food is good for airport food. Ingredients were cooked well and identifiable. They hit a pet peeve of mine in terms of providing instructions though. I ordered through the app and got a text when it was ready. Text says "ready for pick up under the pay/pick-up sign. You do not need to wait in line when you get to the location." It was not under the sign, and after waiting a while and asking around, i found i had to go wait in line where there was a hidden sign about mobile orders. Is this a huge deal? No. Did it piss me off in the moment because of the general awfulness of air travel? Yup. Is it entirely avoidable? Also yep. So if y'all read this, please change your text instructions. I watched many confused people hovering around the pick up area. Food is way expensive for what you get but that's airport life for ya.
google avatar

Ted J.

Yelp
The food is good.... The food is great! The server with the "golden hair" could use anger management classes and training. How you think the conversation is going to go. "We have a problem with...." "no problem, we'll try to fix it" How the conversation went "We have a problem with..." "Oh we don't do that" "but I need your help" "Naw, we don't do that... You need to choose better" And on, and on, and on.... Food is good, but don't expect Chik Fil-a service.... Won't find it here Golden hair wants to fight!
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
I had such high hopes for this place. Alas it's just another airport place that can't duplicate their success elsewhere. Where was the sushi? They were all out despit3 it being the dinner hour. Can I sit at the bar? Nope that's just for show. No sushi chef there. Instead I got a bowl - kinda like you'd get at chipotle. A bunch of ingredients that were fair. The kimchi was a decent touch but the chicken was just dry. It's just....airport food. You can do better.
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
My flight was delayed 4 hours and wanted a place to sit back and relax at to kill time and unwind. Staff here was absolutely friendly and it's a quiet little place with plenty of great food options. The drinks here like the rest of the airport are grossly overpriced but that's just part of the experience it seems. Overall, not a bad place to check out while you're here.
google avatar

Swapnil J.

Yelp
I had a very short layover at MDW and needed something quick to go. ARAMI is located just outside of Gate A4B. The service was fast, literally 5 mins. The spicy tuna roll was pre made and the shrimp tempura was made fresh. The prices are a bit too much for the serving size but the food tasted good. Overall, happy with the lightening fast service. I was able to make the connection and finish the food before we took off!
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Stopped by again. This time, all of the prepackaged sushi was out except for the california rolls, which were tolerable. We tried the beef teriyaki, which was not great, due to the beef being fairly nasty tasting. Return trip was a 2/5 overall im afriaid.
google avatar

Niveen N.

Yelp
This review is based on the salmon rice bowl only! Please brace yourselves. Never in my life have I ever had the horrifying opportunity to try salmon and rice that both tasted like they were cooked in dirty dish water until today. That teriyaki "sauce" or shall I say oil didn't really do much except enhance the dish water flavor I got from the fish and rice. I am not exaggerating. I am genuinely serious. Their rice tasted like it wasn't washed. It tasted watery and gross. This was so gross. I forced myself to eat the fish part of the meal so it didn't feel like a waste of money. I threw the rest away. As I was waiting in line to board my flight, my mom called me and I ranted to her about horrible this specific meal was (salmon teriyaki rice bowl) and the lady in front of me who had also had it agreed with me! She said the food also didn't taste right. This meal was so bad that when I got home from the airport, I remembered to come on here to write about it. Look at my past review history, I barely write reviews on things. I'm honestly lucky I didn't get food poisoning from this place. I feel like I ate a glorified science experiment.
google avatar

Greer J.

Yelp
The food is good. The service was fast. Nice counter where one can eat. Just be sure to ask in advance how they prepare the food. They apparently try to be very authentic, which might be unexpected for U.S. tastes and one staff member can be very defensive about it. But it is tough dealing with people coming through a busy airport all day.
google avatar

Angie N.

Yelp
Staff is horribly rude and yells at you for not choosing your meal within 1 second even though half their menu isn't visible Ike you're waiting in line. Have never been screamed at and was put off by their rude server
google avatar

Tom K.

Yelp
Overwhelmed by the unhealthy options in the terminal, I found my way to Armani. I had a spicy tofu bowl. All the ingredients were super fresh. One surprise was the tofu was cold. But it ended up as a warm bowl because the rice was hot. The vinegary bean sprouts were mixed with onions for a crunchy kick. Many of the reviews found the service lacking here, but the server and cashier were both helpful and friendly. Would go back.
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I see alot of reviews prefaced with "for airport food....". I'm not going to do that. I'm going to base my rating on the food quality and taste. One of the things that enticed me to Arami is that that they are a black owned business and support LGBT. I also was excited to see lighter food fare available, they have sushi, rice bowls, and other Japanese style snacks available (vegan too). I ordered a salmon bowl which included scallions, onions, bean sprouts, and vinaigrette of some kind. The salmon was warm but lacked flavor (even though it had a teriyaki glaze). The onions and bean sprouts didn't fare well as they were placed directly under the warm salmon so they didn't stay fresh and crunchy due to the warmth. Overall it was ok. It just didn't have much flavor which was disappointing. I think they can improve their food if they add seasoning and more sauces to their dishes. Pickling the onions would also be a nice touch.
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
So unfortunately, Midway Chicago has.... Like no restaurants that have gluten free and lactose options, and I really wasn't too interested in paying $16 for a lunch salad. So sushi it is! Their spicy salmon roll was about $12, and was decent. I wouldn't say that it was superb. The sushi rice was insanely dry, and the filling probably could have done better with some more spicy Mayo, but oh well. It went down easy, and was pretty tasty with a little bit of wasabi.

Julie M.

Yelp
I ordered my California rolls and was told it would be a 10-12 min. I waited close to 25 minutes and they called out three orders, one of which was a California roll. another person who had ordered after me was given that order. I was told that they had to make orders for the bar area and she had no idea how long it would be. the person making the rolls was right there and she did not ask him to slip my order in. I waited another 10 minutes and then asked for a refund. As she was going to start to do the refund, the rolls were placed on the counter. I took my order and walked off. The employee said I didn't have to get huffy when taking them. My experience with this company was not pleasant and the woman working the register just washed her hands of the situation instead of apologizing and finding a solution. this is an airport, time is important!

Sarah P.

Yelp
Good food and best place to eat at Midway! The service was good as well and the food came out very quickly.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
One of the better options to eat at midway. I got a chicken teriyaki bowl and spicy edamame. The kimchi and rice were great. The teriyaki is a little one note in flavor and could maybe use some sort of crunch topping. But overall pretty good for airport food.
google avatar

Rhonda S.

Yelp
Nice little sushi bar tucked away in Concourse A of Midway International Airport, near gate A4A entrance. Really nice selection of carry out sushi and a full sushi menu. Friendly staff, bartender was very nice. I needed a snack and couldn't resist a yellowtail roll and raw salmon roll. Full bar with top shelf liquor, craft beers, and wine. Prices are good for an airport location. Didn't know about their other restaurant (1829 W Chicago Ave) but I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for making my layover very pleasant!
google avatar

Anna Grace N.

Yelp
Pretty pricy but that's what you sign up for for airport sushi. They seem to mostly be serving preprepared versions of their sushi bowls/salad bowls which is a bummer but the taste was still great. Is it the best sushi? No, you really can't compare it to the famous name they made at their location but nothing is inherently bad about this option when you need to grab a quick healthy meal. They serve wine and beer in plastic cups if you need to take the edge off the airport stress. The best part about this option might be that they don't have a crazy line compared to other food options.
google avatar

Carrie W.

Yelp
I can't comment on the food or service, but if you're looking for a place to watch all of the games, this is it. I'm simultaneously watching 2 baseball games, basketball, UFC, soccer and shark week. Full bar available. Located between gates A4 and A8 in the food court.

Muzic Madness Twinz S.

Yelp
Over priced yuk food! , didn't like it one bit. Was not satisfied at all . I don't understand what's the shavings all around the food for ... decorations? It was terrible experience for ME and the sista attitude..... , equally garbage
google avatar

Cai R.

Yelp
Completely rip off. $20 for 6 pc of sushi roll that are cold and look like $5. I thought it's order to make. Not worth the price.
google avatar

Trevor B.

Yelp
Came here to grab a quick bite to eat prior to catching a flight. I was planning to order one of their standard plates of meat, but the portion was extremely small for the $15 price tag. I ended up getting the prepackaged California roll sushi. Although I wasn't expecting much, the flavor was just completely nonexistent. Not sure if the other menu options at Arami are better, but there are many other better options to choose from at other restaurants within the airport.
google avatar

Cor S.

Yelp
I mean for airport food, wow! And a bar. Bring on the martini and poke bowls. Bowl was packed with fresh flavors. Really delicious and healthy option at the airport. Server was a sweetheart
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing sushi and was so thankful they were willing to accommodate date my request for something particular. They offer counter seating or grab and go. Full bar as well! Kudos MSW for stepping up the game here! Do try it!

Yelp
Wife and I is transferring from a flight from San Jose, CA to Washington DC. We did not get breakfast or lunch yet so this was our brunch. My wife had the Teri salmon. I had the poke salad which both tasted really good.
google avatar

Jared M.

Yelp
#fatjared say...this place was ok! Had a layover in Midway. Decided I wanted to stay semi healthy! The chicken was good and they had sriracha sauce, but overall just average! They don't let you add anything without charging you extra for it...but for airport food, if you want something quick and fairly healthy it's not bad. I didn't have the sushi, I had the chili chicken, so I can't speak to that, but I would say go for something more local to Chi town like a good pizza. Screw being healthy in an airport!
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Arami offers a classy ambiance and gracious service, albeit with mediocre fish. The restaurant is housed halfway down Concourse A, a bit away from the chaos and hustle-bustle of the main food court. It also features trendy decor, styled with oak accents and lots of white walls for a bright, spacious, welcoming feeling. I really wanted to love it all, but the food was a bit disappointing. The seaweed salad was stellar, but my "Trio Maki" roll was bland. The fish weren't very fresh or flavorful. Plus, the pieces were huge, which made it difficult to eat. Perhaps amazing sushi in the heart of the Midwest is just too much to ask for. And I'd imagine their rice bowls and other dishes might be better. So if you want one of those, then try them out. But it sushi is what you crave, then I'm afraid you might need to try elsewhere (hopefully you're flying somewhere near a coast!).

Yelp
It can be really hard to find good airport food when traveling. I last visited this spot a year ago when I was traveling through Chicago for work. I was SO excited to find this place, as sushi is a go-to of mine when traveling. I had the shrimp tempura roll and was very impressed with it! I was also really pleased with the quick and friendly service. Hope to come here again when it's safe to travel again!
