13 Hidden Restaurants in Waikiki, Honolulu | Eater

"In the spectrum of Italian-American cuisine, there’s restrained California-Italian, red-sauced New York-Italian, and then there’s Hawai‘i-Italian, which at Arancino means a lot of seafood pastas. The sea urchin spaghetti is a must, but the menu also includes spaghetti with tobiko and calamari, squid ink pasta, and penne with shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce. There are two other Arancino locations — a high-end version at Kahala and a casual cafe-style restaurant on the other side of Waikīkī — but the Beachwalk location falls perfectly in the middle of the two extremes. Friendliest staff, yummy pasta and pizza, and cozy environment. This location feels more like a mom-and-pop compared to the Kahala one, but that’s what makes it so lovable!

The waitress Desi was professional, attentive, and engaging. We enjoyed our experience, the atmosphere and most importantly, the food! We ordered Spaghetti alla Pescatora, Spaghetti Alla Carbonara, Calamari Fritti, and some drinks that my husband enjoyed thoroughly. The food came out quickly, it was fresh, hot and flavorful. We will definitely be coming back and bringing our friends/family. 10/10!

Google
Arancino was GREAT!!! It's a very small restaurant, so reservations are recommended. Although, we didn't have any and only waited about 10 minutes. Our waitress, Jamie, was the best! Turned out she was from the same area we live! Food was authentic Italian. Highly recommend!!

Very similar situation to another Italian restaurant we tried out in Honolulu—tried to catch a vibe here, wanted to check out some different (e.g., squid ink) menu options here as they were unique and overall. Overall, was a good meal just couldn’t find that ‘oomph’ to put it over the top. Fresh pasta/homemade should.

Google
This experience was interesting. the food was bad and good. service was outstanding and poor at the same time. the caesar salad had old greens, but the cheese on top was delicious. the margerita pizza was delicious, no complains. the two servers out front were very welcoming and friendly, but the server who i asked for water gave us all varying amounts of water, with some cups being only disappointly half full. Overall, would recommend. the pizza was good with minimal wait.

Google
The establishment offers delectable culinary options with exceptional flavor profiles. However, I must note that the tiramisu lacked complexity and consistency, preventing me from awarding the food a perfect score. The two main courses we savored were exceptionally rich in flavor. I opted for a variation with scallops instead of shrimp, and the accompanying sauce was simply exquisite, demonstrating a remarkable balance of flavors. The spaghetti alla carbonara was equally delightful, although there were instances when the saltiness was slightly pronounced. This could potentially be attributed to the type of bacon used in the preparation. The service provided was exceptionally satisfactory from the beginning to the end, and Jennifer demonstrated remarkable attentiveness throughout the entire dining experience. As we were celebrating our anniversary, the restaurant graciously offered us a complimentary dessert, which was a thoughtful gesture. Additionally, Jennifer provided excellent recommendations that we greatly appreciated. However, I did find the pricing to be slightly elevated in comparison to the overall experience, particularly with regard to the soups and salads. The ambiance of the restaurant was average and did not possess any particularly noteworthy features. The establishment itself is not particularly spacious and may feel somewhat cramped, although it does accommodate a variety of tables. I would recommend making a reservation in advance, especially if planning to dine during the weekend. Lastly, the coffee martini was exceptionally delicious and exhibited an excellent balance of flavors. Would we go back? 🤔 We wouldn't go out of our way to go back or make it a priority, but if by chance we go again, I'd definitely try other plates! #FoodieAdventures #ExploringNewFlavors

Google
I love this place! It has great food and is very low key. The first time I ate there was in January and we had the clams, and scallops for our appetizer. For our entree we had the uni pasta, clam pasta and I had the mushroom pasta. They were all delicious! We returned earlier this month and my girlfriend wanted the mushroom pasta. I couldn't find it on the menu! This time we had the shrimp pasta and the risotto. Both were good, but we really wanted the mushroom pasta. The risotto was a treat as it was made in a parmigiana reggiano cheese wheel! It was a delightful show, but would have been better if the cart was next to us. Instead, it was in the aisle, 2 tables away. The front of the house is a little tight...perhaps too close for comfort. The second time, we had a family with a coughing child next to us. Other than that, we still love this place. Note: Ask what items are on rotation.

The carpaccio had caviar on top and was so delicious. We made a reservation through OpenTable do that there was no wait time. The pizza was huge and we got to take back half.

Yelp
Hands down, one of the best Italian meals I've ever had! The Spaghetti alla Carbonara was rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced -- the sauce had that authentic, velvety texture with just the right amount of pancetta and pecorino. Every bite was pure comfort. I also tried the Rigatoni alla Bolognese, and it was absolutely incredible! Hearty, flavorful, and slow-cooked to perfection. The meat sauce clung beautifully to the rigatoni, and you could really taste the depth in every mouthful. Honestly, it was some of the best pasta I've ever had- both dishes were flawless. To top it off, the Aperol Spritz was refreshing and perfectly mixed, the ideal complement to the meal. The customer service was outstanding warm, attentive, and made the whole experience feel special. If you're a pasta lover, this place is a must-visit. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Arancino is a pleasant spot that's been around for a very long time, with very good food. It was my first time there but my husband's been here multiple times over almost two decades. He says the taste has been consistently good over all that time. We shared the Insalata mista, and I got the Spaghetti alle Vongole. Husband got the Rigatoni alla Bolognese. Vongole was the best I've had, period. Clams were fresh and juicy. Bolognese was flavorful. Pastas were al dente. Also, their draft beer is Suntory. I've never had draft Suntory before, so this was fun! I'm not a beer conoisseur, but it was good. Service is friendly, helpful and not overbearing. Thank you Miki for an exceptional experience!! The interior seemed a bit cheesy at first, but in the end it did feel like it transported me to a little spot in Italy. I've been to the Italian restaurant at the Ritz on Kalakaua, and Arancino is way better in every way except views. Without a doubt, I'm going back next time we're in Honolulu again. Until next time, Arancino!

Yelp
I've walked past this place for years and always assumed it had to be a tourist trap. However, I recently went and am so glad, what a hidden, in obvious site, gem! Trattoria aesthetic and vibes. Busy, but also not so much that can't score a last minute reservation, which is sometimes difficult for a sit down in Waikiki. The service was friendly; server was courteous and our table side pasta preparer had personality which is always fun for a presentation. Ambiance is elevated casual and can be a bit loud as the tables are close together and it gets packed. The menu has a nice mix of Italian favorites. The arancini were delicious. We shared 2 pastas. The table side prepared Cacio e Pepe, loved the presentation. We also ordered the Carbonara, a bit overly salty but expected and delicious nonetheless. The pastas were both cooked perfectly. We also ordered 3 glasses of wine. All nice, I loved they had Barolo by the glass! While this is common in Oahu (and most tropical locals to be honest) I was a little shocked an Italian place would serve overly chilled (think glass sweating level as if you had a glass of ice water) red wine. Luckily it was only 1 of the 3 (and not mine, lol. My companion did not mind it so was a win). To stay true to my initial impression of tourist trap, they do have a photographer come around and take your photos. A nice souvenir to take home! Though cheesy I actually liked this and think it's wonderful for tourists to have a little vacation memory. I will 100% be back and this is now added to my rotation when craving a delicious Italian pasta.

Yelp
Great experience! Service was exceptional. Food prepared quickly. Everything was divine!

Yelp
This was one of our best dining experiences in Hawaii. The portion sizes were perfect. Our server was fantastic, her recommendations were great and she was attentive without being pushy. The food was delicious and the price was reasonable.

Yelp
Excellent little Italian spot, that really took me make to Italy! The ambiance and service is great. Food is a bit pricey, but pretty typical prices for nicer Italian food (approximately $30 an entree). The prosciutto arugula salad was very simple yet tasty, albeit quite pricey in my opinion for how little salad we got. The bolognese pasta was my favorite. Noddles were cooked perfectly al dente. The mushroom risotto was cool because they heat it up in a cheese wheel table side, but it was very rich. We really enjoyed the kids cheese pizza (still $20). I thought it was cute how they make the ears with Nutella in them.

Yelp
Delicious! My husband and I decided to come here after seeing a line outside a few days prior. Usually, there's a reason there's a wait so we wanted to try it out. It's a small place, but they got us in fairly quickly. Cute place inside, and they do a good job of making the most of the space they have. Our server was very nice, super knowledgeable of the menu, and great with suggestions. I ordered the carbonara and my husband ordered the tagliatelle w/ prosciutto & funghi. Both were extremely good, particularly the tagliatelle. It had so much depth of flavor and my husband said it was easily top 3 pasta dishes he has ever had. I tried it as well, and it was absolutely delectable. We also ordered the affogato for dessert which was very good as well. Prices were reasonable, and the overall experience was great. Would definitely recommend and we will definitely make a trip back here next time we're in Oahu!

Yelp
New to lunch, they offer a nice 'Set' to include salad or soup with a main. Pasta was artfully served though our two pastas came out of the kitchen 10 minutes apart. Service was great, it's the kitchen that probably needs help. Free validated parking at Bank of Hawaii. Ice teas were free refills but also $7!

Yelp
Love, love, love. I am an Italian food freak, very picky, and I LOVED this place. I had the lobster bisque (sherry base) and linguine Vongole. Pasta cooked to perfection. Lobster bisque was so good that the woman a table over had to order it after seeing me eat it. Servers extremely friendly and attentive. All ingredients they use are shipping in from Italy. In my opinion, this restaurant is way under rated on yelp. It's a little hot in the restaurant so dress cool. FYI - they have 2 other restaurants on the island! YUM.

Yelp
So of course I made a reservation for the wrong one but it ended up being a blessing. The staff was super friendly, kind and had a table for us! It was incredible. Food was really good and the overall restaurant was a pleasure. I love Hawaii.

Yelp
The three items needed for a great restaurant: food, service, AND ambiance were 5 star.

Yelp
I have now been to Arancino on Beachwalk twice and I cannot wait to go back again. My fiancé and I went to have a cozy dinner the day after Valentine's. Desi was our server and she is great! It's hard to find good service these days, so it's refreshing when you do. The servers work as a team and they work very cohesively. For appetizers, we ordered calamari and the caprese salad. The calamari was good, but we really enjoyed the salad. It was very light and bright. A very refreshing and flavorful start to our meal. For dinner, my fiancé got the carbonara pasta and I ordered the bolognese. I was going to try the ribeye at first, but decided to stick with pasta and aim glad I did. Both the carbonara and the bolognese were delicious! We ended dinner with the tiramisu. The chocolate strip that said Arancino was not just for looks. It tasted really good too! We will be back again soon. That's for sure!

Yelp
Food was great, especially the uni spaghetti. Tasted so fresh and the noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente. Are going to go back just for that dish alone. Inside of the restaurant was on the smaller side but we didn't mind. Kind of added to the Italian restaurant feel. Service was good as well. Had some moments where we had to wait for a while for the waiter. Longer than we would've liked, but it was a very busy night and every table was full so we understood and were patient.
google avatar

Bryan N.

Yelp
A very small restaurant, felt family owned/operated but I'm not sure if that. We had 2 pizzas and 2 pasta dishes. Pastas were the Cabanaro & Pomoadora. Everything was excellent. My daughter got a kids pizza which was cute and had Nutella-filled ears on it.
google avatar

Lee J.

Yelp
Unfortunately, service was very transactional. It didn't seem like the waiter had an interest in making the meal an experience. We were asked so many times if we were ready to order that we lost track. Still looking at our menus might have been a clue, and we already got his input on favorites. We had desert, soup, and entree within 15 mins of arriving. We were even early for our reservation and it wasn't overly busy. If we wanted fast food, we would've gone to McDonalds. With that said, the food was excellent. Delicious tiramisu, lobster bisque, bolognese (the pasta tasted like it was made in house) and starter bread. We liked the Italian music being played, although it was more current and pop, rather than traditional.

Yelp
Over priced- darn! The quaint restaurant is Overcrowded and unpleasant to eat in. Will not return.

Yelp
Holy cow, this place was unreal. First of all, the location and ambience is delightful. Reminds me of Europe the way it's tucked into a little unassuming location. The classic checked tablecloths and sunny colors set the vibe. THE FRESH PAPAYA WITH PROSCIUTTO, I am going to be dreaming about. I mean, that good. The sweetness, the salty prosciutto, melt in your mouth. A perfect dish. My husband had the carbonara. Out of this world, perfectly creamy, but not too heavy, a very balanced dish with perfectly cooked pasta. He loved it! The uni pasta is one of the best in pastas I've had in my life, and I've been all over Italy. This is the best of Japanese, Italian, and Hawaiian influence coming together. You can taste the natural sweetness of the uni, but it's perfectly complimented by the acidity of roasted tomatoes. I will be dreaming about this dish. I literally googled if this place is open tonight because I wanted to come back, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Just a perfect meal that I will always remember in Waikiki. Absolutely will return next yearly trip. We also had a lovely Chianti with our meal and our server was fabulous.

Yelp
Parking sucks ! Need to park at hotel or under bank of Hawaii. But you are coming here for their pastas !!!!! Straight up! And all you need to know is their UNI pasta !!! Glass of white wine ... Waiters don't make the price but bruh $7 Diet Pepsi?

Yelp
Came here for dinner and luckily I had reservations because there was a small line. Food did not disappoint. Friendly staff. Will be back. Check em out on Beachwalk!

Russ H.

Yelp
Great attitudes from the front door throughout the entire dining area. The food is superb whether you have table side risotto or rigatoni with Portuguese sausage. Jamie made our dinner special with talk and ensuring we were taken care of. This will be my go to place every time I'm on island (which is often).

Yelp
Came here last week to celebrate 2 family birthdays. We initially thought this was the restaurant on Kalakaua, but it apparently this was the original location and had just reopened after a remodel. It is super cute with Italian decor, and also pretty intimate a size for a restaurant which is why I'm glad we had reservations. Because we were celebrating two birthdays in our group, my sister found this place off of Yelp and I'm so glad she did! Their pasta is so delicious. I mean the next I come back to Honolulu, I am eating here again. I had the uni pasta, and it was super creamy with just the right touch of uni that every bite was flavorful. My cousin thought her carbonara was the best she ever had. I pretty much had a bite of everyone's meal and it was so good. The service was nice and helpful, and they even gave us two slices of cake to celebrate for the birthday queens. It was the perfect meal for the first night of our trip. Thank you, Arancino! We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Suren B.

Yelp
Great service. Tomahawk steak was great, nice selection of pizzas. Wines to pair - big choice.
google avatar

Diana J.

Yelp
Not the best. Expected more because of the reviews. The crust was not crispy, too chewy doughy. The margarita pizza lacked cheese but it was better than the shrimp pizza. The shrimp pizza was too salty and greasy.
google avatar

Mayumi C.

Yelp
This restaurant is smaller than the one in Kahala, yet you feel as if you were in Italy. We ordered three different kinds of pasta. Bolognese had great tomato flavor which we liked to start with. Then Vongole: it was like pepperoncini, so it was a little spicy. The final one was Carbonara: this was the richest of all and had rich truffle sauce. We enjoyed all of them. The server was very attentive and nice: she always came to offer us a fresh dish plus our three pastas were served in right order. Thank you very much for our little get away dinner to Italy
google avatar

Yelp
Reopened after 4 years. Pandemic hit them hard. Glad the did open. Place is small but the foid is second to none. Their aperitif is top notch. People are friendly. All in all a great pkace

Yelp
I love this place at the Marriott but they don't have the same Menu options. I had to go to the other one. The food I am sure is amazing but really it was closer to me and I had to go further to get my cacia de Pepe. I just gave it three stars for the I convenience of the menu options the food is 5 stars.

Yelp
Excellent food, fantastic service and nice environment. Pastas, pizza and salad all recommended!

Yelp
A must try when in Waikiki.... a lovely place with wonderful food and service!!! Our family enjoyed every aspect of sinning at Arancino on Beachwalk. While Jess was our server I felt that the whole staff was willing to jump in and tend to our needs. Thank you! The food was spectacular, from the crispy calamari to the splendid pizza but the most memorable item was the house made focaccia sooooo good! we will be sure to find time to go back.
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service was top tier & made the restaurant and experience that much better! 10/10 recommend

Yelp
Omg, we passed by this restaurant, just walking on the streets. We made reservations for the next night, and oh my God what a fantastic spot. Ask for Brynn, she is amazing. Not only a great server but terrific communicator. If I could sneak her back to Phoenix, I would.!!!!

Yelp
This location is a great place to eat when in Waikiki. The beach is right there especially when you choose outdoor seating. They also give free foccacia bread that is delicious. Both pastas and the chefs pizza was decadent and would recommend.

Sivory C.

Yelp
Was able to get a table quick. Service was did what was needed. Food lacking and over priced for the quality... I paid $33 for a meat lovers pizza, undercooked, meat that tasted from not fresh and same taste as Dominos dough did not taste fresh like their wonderful focaccia bread, super soggy where everything fell off honestly greatly underwhelmed .. Pasta, got a rigatoni Bolognese, for also $33,... Pasta was hard, undercooked nor fresh taste, sauce was lacking (honestly a canned sauce would taste similar) with low quality beef. Not meaning any hate toward the business, just my honest opinion because I was greatly underwhelmed...

Yelp
I made a reservation to eat here after seeing it on Tik Tok. I probably should have looked at the menu before coming, because the were only a couple of option on the menu that I would eat. There was lots of seafood, which I don't eat, and a lot of fancier dishes. I was expecting just a regular Italian restaurant. That was my fault. What I got was good, I need up getting a pizza and a pasta that me and my wife split. The waitress Jamie was very nice, some of the other waitresses, not so much. Just wasn't a great experience all around, but worth trying out. Look at the menu first though. Its not your average Italian restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Newly renovated. Just reopened. And.... First, aside from Bocconcino and Noe, Oahu does not have any proper authentic Italian eateries rather we have fusion Japanese Italian and Vietnamese Italian. Arancino on Beachwalk is Japanese Italian fusion. Embrace it for what it is. To start, the prosciutto wrapped papaya. It sounds bizarre but with a hit of some EVOO, the tropical fruitiness of the ripe papaya goes so well with the salty prosciutto. Stand out pastas include the spaghetti w/ uni in a tomato garlic cream sauce, rich with umami goodness and the spaghetti carbonara that replaces the traditional raw egg with a soft poached egg and a good amount of grated parm for incredible richness. Of course, the truffle oil should be omitted and replaced with fresh shaved truffle for an upcharge. Pizzas sadly don't impress. The crust is not blistered and the flavor of the basic margheritta doesn't impress. Very well chosen wine list with heavy emphasis on Italian producers. Lots of wines by the glass. Outstanding pricing. Tignanello for only $250/btl??? Mostly agreeable food and a fairly priced wine list make this a great spot to relax if you find yourself in Waikiki. Destination worthy, it is not.

Yelp
Our food was delicious our server Jamie was awesome and inside the restaurant just like a little Italian bistro. Best fresh Italian food on the island.

Yelp

Yelp
Thanks to Jaime for the exceptional customer service, I enjoyed the food and overall experience.

Yelp
Favorite Italian place in Waikiki! Make a reservation to assure seating, typically a line to be seated. Pastas are all first rare. Reasonably priced wines, great service every time!

Laura D.

Yelp
Uni spaghetti was delicious. Bryne was our waitress and she was great! She was friendly, sweet, and playful with our baby. Definitely recommend dining here.

Yelp
3/15/24 - Made reservations through Open table. Highly suggested to reserve, overheard the wait was 2 hour shortly after we arrived for our 545 reservation. Validated Parking is conveniently located at bank of Hawaii & short walk to restaurant. Food - focaccia bread is served warm & fluffy w/ oil & balsamic. We happily ate 3 rounds of it. Scallops carpaccio very tasty & shareable between 2 people. UNI pasta was the star, so creamy & pasta perfectly al dente. Meat lovers pizza completed the meal but nothing too special about it. It was pizza lol. Ambiance - fun & casual setting, you are seated pretty close to other people. Small restaurant. Max people seated together is 4. Anymore than 4 you'll be separated. Service - host could've been a little warmer with the welcome. Our Server was very attentive & nice.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place. Hard to get reservations though. Food was nearly like what we ate in Italy though portions were considerably smaller. That was okay. Very expensive so won't be going back during this trip.

Erik K.

Yelp
This is a great spot and we usually go to the one over by the Marriott or the Kahala. They all three have a distinct atmosphere and the one of Beachwalk is very cozy and classic and we really enjoy the atmosphere here a lot. Like all the other locations, the food is outstanding and the service is always on point and any of these locations are worthy of multiple visits. Beachwalk is definitely a great spot and I'm glad it's there.!

Natasha V.

Yelp
Really cute outdoor seating area giving Europe vibes. Definitely make a reservation here as it gets very busy. We ordered the spaghetti ai ricci de mare, spaghetti alla carbonara, and the burata and prosciutto pizza - all very delicious! Good service and food came out relatively quick. Will be back next time I'm in the area or will check out their other location! Edit: the pictures are kinda bad bc they're screenshots of a video I took. Sorry, but the deliciousness gets across the photo, you get the idea

Howard F.

Yelp
My wife had tagliatelle alla bolognese and a glass of Chianti. I ordered rigatoni alla Amatriciana with sausage. We also had Caesar salad. For dessert we had tiramisu. Our best meal in Honolulu ! Everything we had was incredible, especially the rigatoni! Jess, our waitress was great and the owner stopped by just to see how our meal tasted! We are former restaurantuers, so it meant a lot.

Yelp
I have to confess, pasta is my go to... I LOVE pasta... I had a few good meals at Arancino at the Marriott hotel previously (I feel the Marriott one is a little more formal of a setting) , so I decided to try this one since its within walking distance.. Was crowded but the staff was awesome and we were treated very well. Food came out fast and it was well prepared, pasta was cooked to perfection. I personally would stick with the staples... Alfredo, spaghetti etc.. I felt was good value for Waikiki, and I will certainly be going back.
google avatar

Darren L.

Yelp
Solid Food. Appetizer, we got calamari fritti. Good, but for the price, it's small portion. As for pasta, spaghetti ai ricci di mare was delicious, and the tagliatelle pomodoro e crema con gamberetti was also phenomenal. We also got the margarita pizza which I thought was tasty. Service was great. Waitress was very friendly and caring. Store is small, and makes u feel like ur in Italy. Only con is the price. For the price, I feel like portions should be bigger. Overall, great pasta and others. Definitely worth a visit if ur in Waikiki area.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
We had a great meal here. We were in a hurry because we had a sunset cruise to catch, and they prioritized us. The food was great. Started with some delicious focaccia, had an amazing, crisp and fresh Caesar salad, then we shared the bolognese. It was great. The service was amazing. Cute, small place close to all the Waikiki hotels. People complaining here about the prices clearly haven't been to Waikiki. I felt it was reasonably priced for the area.
