How disappointing. I feel like Seattle has some great Thai options, even in Bellevue, but Araya's doesn't seem to live up to that standard.
My girlfriend and I visited for brunch on a Sunday and were seated immediately. We ordered the pineapple fried rice and Araya's noodle soup - a noodle dish with tom yum broth.
Shortly after, both dishes came out. As someone that cooks fried rice fairly often, I'm experienced to know what to look for in fried rice. The flavor itself, was unique, as they use curry powder in the dish. What bothered me was the size of the ingredients included, specifically the pineapple, onions, carrots, and zucchini. All of these ingredients were cut into too large of pieces, and so a bite of this dish would consist of one whole ingredient. The beauty of a fried rice is the combination of flavors that you can get in a single bite, but because they cut their ingredients so big, you can't get a combination of things in a single bite. Further, the cutting of the ingredients was inconsistent. Some pieces were noticeably larger than others, the thickness of each ingredient wasn't consistent, and some were cut into chucks while others were cut into strips - it doesn't make any sense. Be consistent with the cutting technique. I'd prefer if everything were cut into small, consistent chunks so that you can get a single bite with everything in it.
The Araya's noodle soup suffered from a different problem - a lack of flavor. The broth tasted like a tom yum soup that was watered down, and the broth didn't adhere well to the noodles when eating, resulting in the noodles tasting like nothing.
Pricing is on the higher end for Thai food, but they do give REALLY big portion sizes here. I honestly wish the portion sizes were smaller so that they can cut down on their prices a bit.
The interior is very casual, and there's several tables inside that can seat 2-4 people and a few tables outside for 2, if desired.
Being in Old Bellevue, there's paid parking around as well as street parking that's free for a few hours.
I'm not a vegan, by any means, but have eaten enough vegan food to know that it can still pack tons of flavor. Unfortunately, this place missed the mark for me.
