Yelp
Stayed here for 2 nights on April 1 and 2. The first night was good. The 2nd night, not so good.
First off, let's go thru some PROs and CONs and even some things that didn't influence me one way or another.
PROS
Great area!
Mostly great service
Extremely clean
Full kitchen
Free Wifi
CONS
Rooms are "smallish"
Contingency planning needs improvement (see below)
NOTES
Service was average at times
They have a buffet, but I wasn't able to make it.
As I said, the 1st night, I had no complaints. While the check-in person wasn't as friendly as I'm used to at other hotels, she wasn't rude. Some people might not like the "chit chat" at check in, but I do appreciate it. A little "How was trip in?" or "Where are you visiting us from?" hospitality can go a long way. The hotel is centrally-located as you have a Target, a market, and tons of food options within walking distance.
Now, for the 2nd night, awful. Not totally the hotel's fault, but some things could be improved. On April 2nd, around 11pm, there was a power outage. Because of this, the fire alarm went off and everybody went scrambling for the exits. Because of the heavy winds and rain, everybody just went to the lobby. While most guests were in the lobby, there was ZERO status updates. There were about 3 or 4 employees standing at the front counter and no one was letting people know that there was no fire. Even after the fire department came and turned off the fire alarm, I waited about 15 minutes for an update and nothing. It wasn't until I saw people walking back with flash lights (which they did give free) that I decided to check with hotel personnel. Still no update. We went back to the room to try and get the kids to sleep. About an hour later, we get a letter with an update. The letter basically said, the fire alarm went off because of the power outage, and the fire department came by and everything is back to normal. I'm sorry, but "normal" means having power in the room again, which we did not. I had to go downstairs and find out that the power would turn back on sometime between 1am-5am. Great. For people that use a CPAP like me, that is not good news. I talked to the someone at the front desk and they said they would see what they could do, but couldn't promise me anything. I waited for an hour in my room and they never called. I go back downstairs and talked to the same guy, and he didn't even remember talking to me, but said they can't do anything. The power came back on at 4:50am, so waking up early and heading to Philadelphia to see the a few sights, was pretty much out the window.
Again, a lot of things I mentioned were not the hotel's fault, but there's a few things that they could improve on. In all honestly, I did enjoy the first night enough that I wouldn't have a problem recommending Hyatt to friends who come to visit DC. I just hope they don't have a power outage like I did.
