Melbourne’s Best Cafes for Breakfast and Outstanding Coffee | Eater

"A Fitzroy crowd-pleaser that riffs playfully on breakfast standards, offering inventive plates like a brioche roll stuffed with scrambled eggs, chile, and bacon, charred broccoli with preserved lemon, labneh and haloumi, kimchi-spiked poached eggs with edamame, and fried chicken and waffles paired with a tequila-and-chipotle Dirty Mary." - Tristan Lutze

11 Best Brunch Spots in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"Archie's All Day, a diner set inside a charming bluestone building, is the perfect spot to meet friends no matter the hour, but it's a particularly great way to start out a Sunday session (the oh-so-Aussie tradition of gathering for a day of drinking on a Sunday) in Fitzroy. Sure, there are the classics like smashed avo toast, but they do it up right with local favorite Meredith Farm's marinated feta, mint, parsley, sumac, and a pepita dukkah. The solid cocktail list skews toward day drinking, including the ever-so-popular frozen rosé, as well as a riff on a less-boozy Paloma that includes St.-Germain, pink grapefruit, and cava." - Krista Simmons

Google
Highly recommend this venue for a group catch up. Came here with some friends and family and everyone enjoyed their meals (the chicken waffles were amazing!). Coffee was great too. Recommend booking as it's super popular. We sat outside where there was heating too.

Google
Not my first time at Archie but the latest dish I had, which was the mushroom on toast something got me sick in the tummy 🥲 me and my friend shared the KFC burger and the mushroom toast but I got uncomfy stomach after that (my friend hasn’t finished the other half of his toast so now he’s still fine)🥹. Regarding the flavor, everything was on point to be honest, love the spices and everything but I might not try that toast again even though I love the taste! 😭

Tried Archie’s All Day – the Huevos Sucios(Dirty eggs) were just okay, could have used a bit more spice and punch. The Godmother was tasty, but felt like it was missing a little something. Coffee was average, even with an extra shot. Overall, decent but not particularly impressive.

Google
★★★★★ This was my first time visiting Archie’s All Day, and I’ve heard so many great things about it. The coffee was really good, and even though the staff were short handed, they stayed super friendly and welcoming. The salmon gravlax is definitely a must-try, it was amazing. The smashed avo was also great, and the portions were really generous. I’ll definitely be going back next time!

Google
I always enjoy coming here. It has a funky lil vibe and the food is always tasty. Would recommend.

Google
One of our favourite brunch spots in Melbourne. We had the chicken and waffles which were both cooked perfectly and drizzled with a slightly spicy maple syrup butter.

Google
really impressed with this cafe on gertrude st! archie's has been on my list forever and i finally decided to pop down. usually there is a long line but i went on a weekday morning and it was relatively quiet, no need to wait for a table. service was great and they give you blankets if you sit outside on a cold day. the menu is really varied - they have brunch classics but also some more interesting elevated dishes. my coffee was delicious, but i do wish they did a matcha! there were a few vegan options to choose from, i went with the shakshuka which was incredible and very filling. i also appreciate that they substitute in a vegan feta rather than just removing everything to make it vegan. definitely adding to my rotation of great cafes in melbourne.

Google
It’s good but I would rate other places in the area better! Got a seasonal veggie salad with a poached egg 7/10 just beware the chai is just tea with water and very floral and sweet! Coffee is good

Yelp
It's a very nice place here. There's much to love. The space feels good although the tables for two are very very close together and you inevitably share some conversation with your neighbours. As this is a busy place we had various people both sides of us throughout our brunch. They now know more about my life than I'd prefer. The dishes my companion and I had were mighty impressive. For a start, both dishes were visually stunning (see photos), impressively composed and very flavoursome. Mine was the Huevos Sucios or the Dirty Eggs. I cannot fault the dish particularly as the jalapeño flavour was so beautifully balanced that it gave a delightful length to the meal that lasted well after I finished it. It was never over hot either. The temperature was bang on. Plus, I thought it was good value for money. The Dirty Mary for $10 with this dish is a steal and it's a superb drink. This is better than any version of Mary I tried recently in Hawaii where they'd claim to make the drink better. They don't. My dining companion had the king salmon which he declared as delicious too. Our coffees to finish were lovely as well and topped off a pleasant and successful venture. I'd like to give the place a 4.5, but that option isn't available as has been canvassed here at length. On balance, mainly due to the squeezy tables for two, I'd round down to 4 this time not up to 5. Tough judgements these.

Yelp
My dinner experience here was much better than the breakfast experience. On a Saturday night I arrived two minutes before happy hour and scored a mojito for six bucks. For dinner, I had delicious lamb shepherds pie with fresh stir fried Chinese broccoli and a sample of my friends dry barramundi with pwa puree. The side of sweet potato fries was seasoned with some herb salt and was finger licking delicious. Nice tunes. Friendly staff. Portions for mains are not to share as they are on the small side.

Yelp
Great weekday breakfast. We highlight recommend the chicken and waffles, smoothies and the dessert cookies!

Yelp
More hipsters then you can poke a stick at in #fitzroy Plus great Homewares, boutiques & cafes We checked out the busy @archiesallday which had attentive service & stylish decor.I had the Ricotta Hotcakes w lemon curd and they were everything you would want in a #dessertbreakfast thick & fluffy, the texture was spot on and the lemon curd paired well with the creamy mascarpone My dining companion had the juicy Lucy Burger and I was told it was really good, with lots to check out in the area plus plenty of yummy bakeries around its well worth the trip.

Yelp
The food here is so good it made me cry. 'Nuff said. In all seriousness the staff and atmosphere were also exceptional. Food came promptly and was reasonably priced considering its high quality. Highly recommended the fried chicken waffles and salmon breakfast!!!

Yelp
This place was amazing!! Huevos Sucios is one for the books and by far a top 3 dish we had in Melbourne! The coffee is amazing but it's honestly hard to find bad coffee in Melbourne. The service was great, they were super friendly and the place was clean and super busy which I love in a cafe! I hate it when people complain when cafes are busy. It's like what are business owners supposed to do, tell people to go somewhere else?! This place deserves a 6th star to be honest. Freaking loved Archie's!!

Yelp
Really great brunch spot in Fitzroy! Easy vibes, delicious food, excellent presentation. Some dishes are more creative than others but quality is consistently well founded. I would consider ordering their specials, if available. Really enjoyed my roasted cauliflower salad, avocado toast and eggplant toast!

Yelp
It was my second times in this restaurant. When we arrived the waiter told us : "the wait is only 10 minutes!" But we waited 25 minutes to have a table. I took the mashed avocado and it was the best mashed avocado in Melbourne. The toast was very good, there is many avocado, the perfect association with lemon and many feta. I spent a very very good! If you like smashed avocado you need to try this dish here!

Yelp
Oh Archie's! I was so hoping you were going to become my Thursday morning breakfast place. The coffee this time round was much better than the last time but unfortunately the service and food were not as good as last week. They were a bit all over the place and also our breakfasts got almost dropped on the table and our waitress left before we could order our second coffees and then never came back. I had pumpkin purée with poached eggs this time and all the flavours were great but my eggs were still raw on the inside which kind of ruined my brekky. One of my pet hates is runny egg whites.. No one wants snot for breakfast. My partner had the dirty eggs this time round and the chorizos weren't crispy but he still enjoyed it, just a little less. The inconsistency means we probably won't come back in a hurry.. Let them tweak a few things first and maybe... try again in the future.

Yelp
Archie's gives you that really good and bubbly feeling that you are about to enjoy the most delicious breakfast ever (at least that's how I felt right after taking the first sip of my flat white!) If I remember correctly, I even did a little dance in my chair for how good I knew these four entrees that we ordered were going to be! We walked to Archie's little back patio that was extremely cute. We made ourselves comfortable and then, boom!!!, eating mindset kicked in (even though its going every single minute of every single day!) We first enjoyed some flat whites and cappuccinos, which were perfectly warmed. Then, we "accidentally" ordered four plates and did. not. leave. one. bite. I know, i know, it seems like I am always exaggerating, but I promise it was too good to even think about stopping. So as Archie's says, yes I believe it is very possible to eat at "Archie's all day!" The Oatmeal was delicious! I would definitely order it again. We almost did not order it, but we were so happy we did! The patio out back is lovely. The orange juice and coffee is worth it. Honestly, all the plates we ordered were worth it. The Godmother is pretty big so be ready to be overwhelmed! Ordered: Vanilla bean oatmeal- banana blueberry, coconut, almonds & maple Huevos sucios (dirty eggs)- tater tots, jalapeno spiked Monterrey Jack, avocado and tomatillo salsa, black beans, fried eggs, chipotle mayo add chorizo $4 + add a Dirty Mary $10 Crispy poached eggs- daikon kim-chi, edamame, enoki mushrooms, sesame dressing, sourdough toast The Godmother- fluffy scrambled eggs 'Godmother chilli', pain de mie roll add crispy bacon $4

Yelp
I zoomed through Melbourne a couple of weeks ago and juuuuuust had enough time to squeeze in a brunch date with a local friend, who wanted to tick Archie's off their to-try list (and I'm always more than happy to enable that sort of thing). Right from the get-go I was tickled by this place, because the staff are so bloody lovely and welcoming! My friend was seated out the back in the little courtyard. It was tough deciding on what to order because so many things looked enticing, but we were both super pleased with what we settled on. The table service continued to be delightful and we even got to enjoy the comedy of one of the staff trying to adjust the shade screen so the sun wasn't right in another diner's face (it ended up... being even more... in their face). There are so many options around Fitzroy but after my first experience at Archie's, I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Yelp
My housemate and I decided to give Archie's a try since its brand new and it brunch menu looked very interesting.. Mistake... As soon as we sat down , we ordered our coffees. Waited 10 mins..another waitress came to check on us and we gave our orders again..5 mins later, she came back and asked our orders again! Two regular white coffees took 20 mins ... $4 each. We are getting hanger since its been 45 mins and our food hasn't arrived.. Meanwhile, I kept checking on the waiter and waitress (not busy) but avoid eye contact.. So I got up and ask if it's not ready we will just go to another place because it's ridiculous.. ( there's a couple went to Arcadia sat down when we got our coffee and they received their food in less than 20 mins) Anyways, we were told that the kitchen is extra slow today and they are working on it...(so?!...) your meal will come shortly...another 15 mins past ...finally arrived. The coffee was alright (7/10)and the food is good(8/10) ( probably bc we were starving and can't really tell the difference) I had the dirty eggs which were pretty flavorful but for the attitude and slow service I would definitely not go back and rather go somewhere else.

Yelp
Came across Archie's just walking down the street trying to get out of the heat. So happy we did. The atmosphere is great. We sat on the back patio, which was covered with an awning but still had a nice light breeze. The fries were amazing! Perfectly seasoned with rosemary and salt, servered with a side of aoli. If you are a tequila fan the Paloma is def the way to go it has a great citrus to sweetness ratio.

Yelp
Best brunch I've ever had! Literally. I've traveled all around the world and this is hands down the best brunch I've ever had! I ordered the crispy poached eggs and they were delicious! My mom had the huevos sucios which were also delicious. Super cute patio and trendy spot, must go!

Yelp
Great friendly service with amazing coffee. I had the dirty eggs with chorizo and my mouth is on fire in an oh so good way Went on a Sunday morning and the place was pretty busy, but managed to get a seat for 1 without a fuss. Food and coffee is served pretty fast for such a busy restaurant, so I doubt you'd be waiting for a table for a 2+ people for too long.
google avatar

Yelp
Music TOO LOUD! Not a place to chat Food is ok though! Coffee is great. Reminds me more of Sydney style cafe (bar scene). not cafe culture. 0bar Mobile phone in some areas of the cafe. Too bad about the music.. the bass is thumping so loud the table is vibrating! Lol!!

Yelp
Nice simple clean fit-out. Always seems super awkward getting into to this cafe its a bit of a bottleneck at the front door of staff, people trying to get a table, people trying to pay and folks waiting for takeaway coffee. Once you get past thats it's lovely. I kinda get the feeling they are still yet to really find their stride every-time I have been here. It's new, it's still a little clumsy in regards to service and the vibe - the music must was stopped and changed at least half a dozen times the last time I was there. Kinda had me wishing they would just chuck a record on the idle turntable and just let it play out. I'm a big fan of the scrambleg egg roll they do. So much so that I went back again just for that dish. Both times I've added the bacon. At $14 it would want to be good and both times it has. Just a nice amount of spice to it. The coffee is acceptable, not the most beautiful looking coffee I have ever had, just solid every time I have had a coffee here. I'd be interested to grab a drink and a bite to eat here at night and test what they are like 'all-day'.
google avatar

Claire P.

Yelp
Woooow the menu is awesome, bringing tater tots back to deliciousness!! I recommend adding the chorizo to the dirty heuvos. Great atmosphere, barely any wait, friendly staff. The food tho... WOW

Yelp
Ordered the Salmon with poached eggs. Clean flavours with a nice Japanese twist on the salmon being that it's cured in white miso and the sides re pickled cucumber and daikon. The serving was quite small however the waitress must have sensed my hunger and suggested I order a side of rye to go with it. Great coffee too and a yummy selection of daily locally made juices, I had watermelon and it was so refreshing.

Yelp
This restaurant provided a first class brunch experience on my trip to Australia. I ordered the crispy poached eggs at the advice of my waitress, and I sure am glad I did! The plate was a work of art and the flavors were harmonious. Absolutely delicious! It seemed as though was I eating the signature dish of a world renowned chef. You can tell this place really takes pride in what they serve. I also ordered a Bloody Mary, which was great as well. Service was friendly and attentive which made the visit here all the more enjoyable.

Yelp
Archie's was a great place to get lunch. They seemed to be a smaller restaurant but maybe that was just because they were packed and we weren't inside long. We ate outside. It was a perfect day for it too. They look like they serve a wonderful brunch and we could have ordered from the brunch menu because if I remember correctly it ran until 3. We were just in the mood for lunch food. The lunch menu had a wonderful selection of meat, vegetarian, and vegan. If you are a vegan make sure that you ask about the buns. The standard buns that come with the tofu sandwich is not vegan. However, you can ask for the Ciabatta bun which is. My friend chose the tofu burger with ciabatta bun. She said it was very good. I chose the chicken sandwich. I was expecting a chicken patty but it was actually pulled chicken. When the server delivered our meals he informed me that it was his favorite thing on the menu. He was not wrong. It was very, very good. My friend and I also split an order of fries. They were perfectly seasoned and just the right size to split. I actually thing there would be too much if you ordered for just yourself. We had a lovely meal with wonderful service. I would definitely recommend this place for any meal. It has a great location with many shops nearby. It makes for a lovely afternoon of shopping and a good meal!

Yelp
Archie's is pretty new and has been drawing massive crowds on the weekends so we went for a midweek brunch instead which was a good move! Archie's is in the old Southpaw space which is actually pretty big with a lovely courtyard out the back. They were pretty busy for a Thursday afternoon but not out of control & the staff were super lovely (one of the girls even caught a troublesome bee in a Tupperware container for me!) & everything came out in a timely manner. I had a braised lamb sandwich, my friend had a broccoli rabe sandwich & we shared fries. The sandwiches were seriously delicious & the rest of the menu was really varied & reasonably priced. The coffees were good too. There's breakfast, sandwich and evening menus to keep you going all day! The vibe was really easy and relaxed. All in all I'd recommend Archie's but I'd show up early on the weekend or be prepared to wait!

Yelp
A hair was on my friend's food, the front house guy said it was not from one of theirs, no apology, customer service is shocking, not worth to go back again. The food was very ordinary but the cafe is overpriced and overrated for sure.
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
PHENOMENAL lamb sandwich on ciabatta. Excellent cappuccino and cold brewed coffee. Friendly service. Lots of beautiful people and hipsters.
google avatar

Nath M.

Yelp
First time here. Had the 'dirty eggs'. Easily the dopest Melbourne breaky I've had in awhile. Killer. Coffee decent, wife had the lamb burger, it was dope too.
google avatar

Brie P.

Yelp
Don't come here if you're by yourself or if you have your laptop, you will get some bad energy from the staff. Found it to be very stiff and unwelcoming. I did not feel comfortable and left after one coffee even though I had planned to stay for a few and a meal. I definitely will not be coming back, loads of way more friendly cafes around.
google avatar

Marla R.

Yelp
Its nice enough. the staff spend a lot of time preening and watching themselves in the mirror. the pigs ears with apple was nice but a bit too much hot sauce obscured the delicate fresh apple. The burger was surprisingly nice, very moist. Its an ok spot for a quick drink and a snack.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Tasty food, decent size dishes, very friendly staff. We ate in the quiet courtyard out back and they turned the heaters on for us. Smashed avocado was a hot as well as the dirty egg with Korean rice cakes( spicy morning wake up).
google avatar

Angel H.

Yelp
Ordered their smashed avocado and it was the best I had tasted during our recent trip to Melbourne. (Had an avocado obsession during the entire trip lol)
google avatar

Tom W.

Yelp
There are so many better choices in Fitzroy - what sounded like a delicious filling sandwich with lashings of roast chicken stuffing and jus was $15 for a roast chicken ciabatta roll with no side salad - a roll on a plate that's it. Left hungry and disgruntled - i'm still mad the next day, enough to write this review.
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Newly opened and absolutely smashing it in terms of coffee, food and service! Super busy and I'd have to recommend the dirty eggs! 5/5
google avatar

Ingrid H.

Yelp
We came in early (around 8am on Sunday) and we had a good choice of tables. With a little one we chose the bench area out the back inside. Breakfast options are fantastic and portions are generous. We all had a great breakfast. I chose a pretty traditional poached eggs, bacon, avocado and mushrooms. One of our party had baked eggs, the other a humus and flat bread combo with egg. This is a great place, really friendly staff with plenty of space particularly for our toddler who wanted to walk around. Coffee was fantastic. Really enjoyed Archie's. We'll be back.
google avatar

Molli M.

Yelp
Huevos sucios (dirty eggs) with chorizo! When there is perfection, why try anything else?!?

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Food is alright here, but the portion size is small, given the price I paid, I expect a bigger portion size. And forget about their coffee, too bitter to drink!
