"There was absolutely nothing as cool in Salem as Archive, a coffee-shop-plus-cocktail-bar with a speakeasy vibe, when it opened in 2014. Anchored by a double-sided bar, it’s loaded with Instagram-ready stacks of old books and other library aesthetic ephemera lining the slate-hued walls. A project of local Jesse Hayes, the coffee-and-cocktail bar remains a heavy-hitter in the city’s downtown scene. Daytime, visit for espresso beverages made with their own roasts; one signature is the Bee’s Knees, a latte with house-made honey-rosemary-lavender syrup. At happy hour, Archive’s original drinks are the best you’ll find in Salem’s increasingly vibrant cocktail scene. Pre-pandemic, the bar was also known for incredibly ambitious theme parties, and a monthly Formal First Saturday that invited guests to dress up in cocktail attire." - Emily Teel

Google
Right up the street from the convention center. You will find this awesome little coffee shop that has some of the most delicious coffee. I have ever had in my life and some of the most tasty cheeseburgers ever. The Fish and Chips look delicious. The French toast looked delicious. Their French fries were perfect and their vegan ranch sauce yummy! Customer service was great. The servers we're awesome food came out fast. The restaurant had a good energy. If you've never been there, I would highly recommend it.I will definitely return when i'm in the area.

Mocha and warm and cozy latte and lemon cheesecake was also delicious. Friendly staff, they did forget to bring out our cheesecake but they made it right and gave us one on the house. Love the vibes and chill atmosphere. Will come again

Next time, I would definitely add protein to my food to enhance the overall experience. The coffee was delicious, the food was fantastic, the service was exceptional, and the atmosphere was truly amazing. It was a delightful visit, and I look forward to returning soon.

Google
What a beautiful place to spend a rainy morning. Best mocha i have had in quite some time. The scone I ordered (blueberry-lemon) wasn't quite my thing, but still tasted good and looked gorgeous to boot. Looking to make this my usual coffee spot for days in Downtown salem.

I wandered into Archive while in town for work. They might’ve made one of the best balanced and tasting vanilla bourbon lattes I’ve ever had. The flavor was so well balanced and delicious that one could easily drink a growler of this before the caffeine overwhelms them. The staff was great and the environment is an appreciable level of classy with historic vibes. My only unmet desire is a better selection of pastries. They only appeared to have butterscotch chip scones and rice crispy treats available. This place was a lovely surprise and I absolutely recommend coming here for your coffee needs.

Google
This place is lackluster and unhygienic. I wasn’t impressed with Archive. It’s counter-order, and the venue does not encourage singles to sit at the bar so single people will take up large booths while camping out on their laptops. I got a breakfast hash, and it had no sauce, so it was essentially just a bowl of potatoes since I couldn’t have the cheese. When we asked for waters and condiments, the server had to come back three times because she kept forgetting things. The final time I had to pick a long hair out of my ketchup.

Google
Coffee and a scone. 12oz latte was amazing and one of their specials. Not overpoweringly sweet but rather a hint of sweet and good tasting espresso shot. The jalapeno cheddar scone was phenomenal! Very flavorful and tasted fresh plus a hint of sweetness, which was unexpected and lovely. Best jalapeno cheddar baked good I've ever had! Service was good but nothing that stood out, however I think that's the intent. Good ambiance! Nice acoustics too, so you can have a conversation in a full restaurant without feeling like you have to yell at the person right next to you.

Google
Best coffee in Salem. Really beautiful space, with expertly roasted coffee and good customer service. Was in Salem for 2 days recently, and went 4 times. Even took home a bag of the Nicaragua to brew at home.

Lance N.

Yelp
First time in Salem to revisit my dad's old town and college at OSU. Only here for 3 days, been here 5 times! Great place to eat

Yelp
I've visited Archive 3 times since my initial 2 visits in (2015 and 2016/2017?) All in different years with different types of service. Most recently in Winter of 2023. The wife and I wanted to do a night cap so we come in on a slower weekday and grab some cocktails. From the moment we entered, it took awhile to seat us, and that's ok because the hostess was preoccupied. No biggie. Keep in mind, it wasn't crazy busy. Empty tables and maybe a handful of patrons. Once we get seated. Server gives us the drink menus and then we don't see them for another 15-20 minutes. Another group comes in after and is seated next to us in the back. The server appears and ends up putting their order in first....ok. Server comes to us after they do what they needed to do. Comes back, takes our drink orders and then it took 40 minutes for the damn drink to come out. Now I was enjoying my time with my wife, but once it felt like it was taking longer than usual, I had to observe and see what was happening. As I look around, i see our server standing behind the counter cleaning glasses, gives us a look and proceeds to continue with what they were doing. Sweet. WHAT YOU DOING HOMIE?! Where's our drinks?! I wanted to walk out, but the wife was being nice. When our drinks finally did arrive, there was no acknowledgement of the wasted time from the server. To be fair, I'm an easy patron. Just ask if I want another round lol. (I wasn't asked if I wanted another round) Drinks are good but the service has gone down hill significantly. Maybe it was an off night. I'll probably come back one of these days. Maybe. *shrugs*

Yelp
This place is cute. The service was friendly. I'm disappointed in portions, however. I ordered a $14 strawberry margarita and was served a tiny little cup of bozy strawberry whip cream, maybe 4oz? It was tasty whip cream. It just should have been on top of a margarita. My friends' drinks were ok, nothing special. It's not worth the price. We won't be back. Its so rare when we all get to go out together nowadays that it's just not worth wasting our time or money on overpriced whip cream. Do better. Stop ripping people off.

Yelp
A meal in an atmosphere centered around literature? Yes please. We tried Archive on a Saturday just after before 11 am so right on the verge of breakfast/brunch/lunch. Which made it hard to decide which type of meal I wanted but I was quite happy that they served both breakfast and lunch for the window of time we were there. My friend that brought me here was only accustomed to going here for dinner and it sounds like it has a bit different procedure for dinners (i.e. table service) whereas we walked up to the bar, ordered, got a number and got to choose our table. There were a lot of food options but not so many as to be overwhelmed. I decided on a classic cheese burger while my friend ordered a breakfast bagel. And we got the pumpkin cheesecake to share because, why not? My burger was good, worth the price, not too greasy but not the absolute best I've ever had either. I received a lot of fries, they probably could have cut that serving in half haha. The cheesecake was yummy, just the right size for sharing and not too heavy. My friend's bagel looked delicious as well. The staff were friendly and helpful, everyone seemed in good moods. I enjoyed the ambiance here, not too dark, open with high ceilings and of course, the industrial bookstore vibe helped. They could do with some maintenance, the booth seats we chose were tearing in spots that might have been taped up.

Yelp
Archive has excellent cocktails, and great service, diligent, fun service. Super fun ambiance!

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Wow what a find in the heart of downtown Salem. I was staying at a hotel nearby and stumbled upon Archive Coffee and Bar when searching for some breakfast. You order at the bar and seat yourself. Staff is friendly and they have a great coffee menu with lots of options for everyone. I ordered a latte and the monte cristo. The latte was excellent and paired well with the Monte cristo. I sat near the bar and was amazed at the "library" of bottles on each shelf. They had a great bourbon selection which caught my eye. The latte was so good I ended up ordering a second to go. Definitely my new coffee shop when visiting Salem.

Sabryna M.

Yelp
I ordered the bees knees and it was delicious! Husband ordered a nitro cold brew and it was STRONG. He ordered a breakfast burrito and downed the whole thing. I ordered the potato hash-it was okay, but I had to double check that I didn't make up that it was supposed to come with cheese bc mine literally came with like 1 tiny strand. Flavor was OK but kind of bland. I put some of the salsa that came with my husbands burrito on it and that made it way better. The ambiance is most of the experience. I'm a big vintage lover so that was really cool.

Sadie N.

Yelp
Super nicely decorated location and selection of menu items. Got an iced warm&toasty drink as per recommended by the worker, very good insight.

Beatriz P.

Yelp
I came to this cute coffee shop/bar to study and i definitely like the atmosphere. I came here to study for a few hours and the service was amazing. The prices are a be high on food and drinks but definitely worth it! I will definitely come again!

Angelina D.

Yelp
Super cool vibe. Amazing coffee. Kind staff. Good food. What more could you ask for? Love this little place. Have been before for drinks in the evening and was super yummy as well. A little gem in downtown Salem.

Kaleena M.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Service is amazing. All staff were really nice and made sure we had everything! The inside of the restaurant is pretty! Family friendly place. You have the option to sit outside which is beautiful in the summer! The coffee is good; cold brew and lattes. I would recommend this for parents who have kids and want a drink and have things for kids too

Esther D.

Yelp
We love the atmosphere in this place! It's great for meeting friends to catch up. Very friendly service. The creme brûlée was excellent. The chai is delicious.

Jeff S.

Yelp
This place is fun, and has a creative menu that is especially helpful for someone who is a vegan or gluten intolerant. The decor is unique and committed to a whimsical feel. Both cocktail list and food menu are regularly updated with brave creations that will keep you curious. Outdoor seating is charming and service is chill & attentive.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant, good food and the service was outstanding of the world!!! The crème brûlée was so yummy!

Elijah H.

Yelp
The Food was Amazing!!! Best steak in Salem hands down! The hash bowl I got with the steak was to die for. Perfect combination of flavors and spices for the dish that was prepared. Forget the prices the food is worth it. 10/10. People and service very fast and nice! The seating area was very quiet with enjoyable music. You have to try this place!

Melanie S.

Yelp
Stepped in for an after dinner drink and enjoyed a great espresso martini I've been in for coffee before but had not experienced the bar yet. Friendly and helpful bartenders who make great drinks. They have their own coffee liqueur which made this and my husband's bourbon drink delicious. Be sure to check out the string art sign on the back wall- amazing!! Will be back soon for dinner!

Maggie W.

Yelp
Came in here to try something new. The atmosphere was nice. The food was not very good. We ordered the Monte Cristo. It was burnt, and flavorless. It was also overly sweet with did not cover the burnt bread. It came with fruit that was not even close to being ripe. The service was extremely slow but the gentleman that served us was very nice.

Lydia T.

Yelp
I met a friend here for a quick catch up and drink. This was a really cute place with a Boho/Industrial feel. It was very inviting and I love the concept of a nice coffee bar on one side with seating and then a cocktail bar on the other side with tables and chairs. We enjoyed a cocktail. It was a welcoming and relaxing environment. Service was friendly.

Toni A.

Yelp
Our daughter brought us here for a different coffee taste. Warm & Tasty is by far a comfort memory for me. The Bees Knees appealing for the rosemary and pepper flavors. Not heavy handed with the flavors. The Hot Chocolate was better than a certain coffee house that has a faux mermaid as their brand.

Sam T.

Yelp
I was not a fan of lavender fog it came out warm and was just not hitting the spot. I asked to swap drinks and workers gladly helped me with that of no charge. Warm and toasty with almond milk was amazing! Food was great. Will come again.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Decent but nothing special. Came for dinner and ordered the jalisco mule and gin mussels. The jalisco mule was on the sweeter side and very light on the tequila. I could not taste the chili and ginger simple so if you're looking for a classic mule, you're safe to order this drink. The gin mussels were sadly disappointing. The broth was over salted and I couldn't taste the apricot gin butter at all. 1/3 of the mussels were completely closed and impossible to pry open. Plus the oil that they used for the baguette tasted rancid. The ambiance was pleasant and my server Bella was very informative and attentive.

Crowd A.

Yelp
Big fans of Archive for their wonderful servers and most especially Rachel. She always greets us with a warm smile and makes us feel welcome and appreciated. I can't tell you how far that goes in making you want to return to this establishment. A couple of things at Archive that are especially great are the crème brûlée and the rice bowl--no matter what item you add to it. We've had it with both steak and tofu. Both are great. Right now they have a flank steak that is excellent and if you're vegetarian there are also plenty of options. Their breakfasts are very good, especially the breakfast burrito which has crunchy bacon, egg and other deliciousness in it and also the avocado toast. One of the most fun things is the revolver from the cocktail menu, which means the bartender will make a specialty drink for you based on which base liquor you choose. The server will always come back and make sure you like it. It's just a quirky fun interestingly-decorated great atmosphere for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night. I would say there's only one negative and that is on Friday nights there is an absolutely atrocious street "musician" who sets herself up on the street corner opposite Ritters and Archive EVERY Friday night. She plays electric guitar with an amp and is so bad it will make your ears bleed. You can't sit outside at either of these establishments on a Friday night without wishing you were wearing earplugs. Every Friday night since springtime she is out there ruining these businesses' customer enjoyment of outside dining at their establishments. It's incredibly arrogant to inflict this on the entire neighborhood and she appears to be completely un-selfaware of how bad she is. Patrons have actually complained and moved inside or just paid their check and left because of her. She plays the same several chords over and over again, occasionally there's some flat attempt at singing, a depressing Janis Joplin wanna be, you think maybe you are listening to some young person practicing only she's practicing in the middle of a busy restaurant neighborhood, the same songs over and over again and is there every. Friday. night. I work downtown and after a week of work I would just love to go to Archive with friends and sit outside at their great outdoor sidewalk tables, but this awful street musician absolutely ruins it. Other than THAT, Archive is great for outdoor dining the rest of the week, or if you sit inside on a Friday night also great. I wish somebody from the restaurant would go over and suggest she try a different spot, maybe one not surrounded by restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and who are all playing their own music which is drowned out by her noise. We want to go sit outside at Archive every single Friday night otherwise, until it is too cold to do so, because it is one of our favorite places in downtown. Great food. Menu changes regularly. Great service. Great atmosphere. If you're sitting inside on a Friday night that is. Great bartenders too!

Michelle B.

Yelp
I've done the research for you - this place has the best Avocado Toast in Salem! Also love the "Bee's Knees" coffee concoction, but loses 1 star for having "coffee" in their name and serving a $5.75 "hot" coffee that was barely warm, took forever to arrive when the place was not crowded, and having an aloof staff who ignore customers.

Emily G.

Yelp
My recent experience here was not "hospitality driven" as they claim. The ponytail guy working at 10am on Wednesday morning was so rude and the complete opposite of hospitable. Don't get me wrong the drinks are 10/10 and so good. But the employee was so rude. We walk in and I say is it okay if we order 8 drinks? Granted there is nobody behind us, it's not very busy. He shrugs and says "uh OKAY??"... I was taken aback but whatever. Then I start to order and he gives so much attitude about the menu. "Hi do you have black tea?" Then he rudely says "LOOK AT THE MENU". Anyways he's rude the entire time I list my drinks. He repeats the order back to me and my order is messed up. The ICED lattes are hot, and they forget one of the drinks. Instead of fixing it, he says "if you want it go in the back of the line and wait and order again" My coworker is like wtf, we ordered and waited and YOU messed it up, and you tell us to go to the back of the line... Anyways so he charges us for 2 drinks he messed up.. We were very nice, respectful, and gracious for their service, because we understand 8 drinks is a lot. But idk why the guy was being such a dick.

K R.

Yelp
Great ambiance and service. Only got coffee after dinner next door but wish we had eaten here when we saw the menu and vibe.

Nakeia D.

Yelp
Enjoy visiting Archive. Their food is always fresh, and they have a decent selection of gluten/sugar free scones - when you get there early enough to get one! Love their coffee. I've been for both breakfast and dinner and enjoy both. Their cocktails are good too. They've added outdoor booths, and I like their indoor decor as well. Cool vibe.

Christina S.

Yelp
This is a really cute spot in downtown Salem. The decor is spectacular and it has a cool, plant industrial feel to it. It's such a bummer that the food doesn't compare. My friend got the avocado toast and I got the quinoa hash with egg. To start off, the avocado toast was embarrassing. It was a piece of sourdough bread slapped onto a plate with slices of avocado, tomato and red onion topped with an egg. No seasoning on the egg, everything was just tossed onto the bread. The bread wasn't even toasted! Not worth $14 whatsoever. The quinoa was okay but nothing to rave about. It took a bit to get our food and it wasn't served at the same time. The waiters kept asking us if we had anything else coming. It seemed so disorganized. The two things that saved this review from being 1/2 stars was the decor/style and the matcha. Maybe they should stick to coffee/matcha and cocktails.

Russell K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious coffee and food. Love the outside seating, though the inside is gorgeous too. Thankful to have found this place while being in the area. Totally worth the stop.

Samantha F.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced, tea party portions and drink sizes. Service is okay. Not the best food.

Travis H.

Yelp
Try the Bee's Knees! So good. Stylin' spot. Great coffee. Amazing team - the service is wonderful. A hidden gem in Oregon.

Sara T.

Yelp
All of the staff was very nice and attentive. Different waiters and waitress checked on me to make sure I had everything I needed. Isabelle was so sweet and kind. She even took pictures for me because it was my birthday. The drinks were delicious. I really loved the espresso martini. The entire experience was great and Isabelle was the icing on the cake. Can't wait to go back.

Megan B.

Yelp
We dined here in the evening and everything was just okay. The Arancini was bland and disappointing. Th rice bowl had delicious rice but the other elements were lackluster. The burger was overall fine, but overdone and again lacking in flavor. The drinks were really tasty but rather small. I'd be interested to try their brunch and coffee, but their dinner is just not worth the money.

Leanne D.

Yelp
Archive is all about coffee, teas, books and food. The menu was limited and different that was is posted on their website. The berry salad was not available, probably due to the season. The vegetable soup was decent but not especially flavorful. I received much more broth than I did vegetables. That may have been due to how much it was stirred before ladling the soup. The fondue was fabulous. Thick and and tasty. The bread served with had a bit of honey drizzled over it. Along with the bread there was some Granny Smith apple sliced and some slivers of ham. I focused more on the bread and the apples. My only request is that some put a qualifier on their website that salad is only available seasonally.

Aaron G.

Yelp
Rose Gold coffee beverage .... I laughed with joy and surprise at my first sip. Use of fresh an unprocessed ingredients gives this place a palette that is clean and complex. Staff's warm smiles accompanied by intricate rustic decor make this a treat for the senses.

Vikranth V.

Yelp
Favorite coffee shop in town Large seating Beautiful ambience - Gourmet coffee and tea drinks - amazing collection Friendly staff Good wi fi Centrally located in downtown salem - Food option is not great. A bit bland sometimes. Should pay later than upfront and have to go and stand in line and reorder (kinda kills the buzz) Parking can be tricky but that comes with the location.

charlie a.

Yelp
The people from Salem aside, most of the rest of us know that nearly everything in Salem sucks. Then a person discovers archive, continues to patronize this place but never get a friendly smile or or vibe, ever, from any of the staff. Then you remember, that this is Salem, and the people in it (staff included) also suck. Technically the only real specialty coffee in the crapital city, and it's a bummer because it's more worth it to just hit a drive through coffee cart

Kent M.

Yelp
Only reason not 5 Stars is, geez, apparently only one size cups here...SMALL. Otherwise is wonderful and a beautiful place and lovely people attending.

Emma P.

Yelp
Went with a group of coworkers for dinner on a saturday night and it was a cool spot! Drinks were good but a little expensive. Their food was hit and miss. Half of the table liked their order, the other half did not. The service was fine but we had a fun little time. Would return to try their coffee selection!

Antonio M.

Yelp
The food is not flavorful at all, and for the price i think i can get something better somewhere else i have ate here multiple times trying different dishes to see if maybe it was on off day Or just that particular dish was bad but to be quite honest all the food was bad, maybe the breakfast burrito could get a 3.5/5. The coffee and non coffee were good but thats it nothing amazing pretty regular. The service was okay too a couple nice people a couple not so nice. One thing that does bug me is that EVERY time i go to sit the table is dirty. very pleasing to look at inside just DIRTY and DUSTY.

Avery H.

Yelp
Super sick coffee shop with an excellent coffee program. Highly recommend. Owners are really innovative and have created an amazing atmosphere

Bronwen N.

Yelp
Wow! Run don't walk! The ambiance and the quality of the beverages were off the charts! We had a shaken latte, off menu, but ask for one, and the London fog. Both exceptional. The orange cardamom scone was also delicious. Will make a point of coming here anytime I'm in town.

jen h.

Yelp
My lovely $13 breakfast burrito. Really guys? Super disappointing. I messaged you on Monday and no response, so here we are.

Mark W.

Yelp
Clean and desirable. Bookish decor. Awesome coffee in the morning. Awesome cocktails and food at night. Whiskey for walls! Good vibes, music, staff. A Salem joint that surprises Salemites. If you don't like it, that's cool. Just don't spoil it...

Mike C.

Yelp
Archive is fantastic. I try to come here whenever I'm in the Salem area. Food is very good, beer, wine, cocktails, friendly service.... And the coffee is spectacular- probably the best in the area. This is an elegant coffee shop and bar but also it's a place you can feel comfortable coming anytime. Bonus points for offering free water on a scorching hot day. That's pretty dang cool. Love this place.

B H.

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here in 2023. Very positive experience. Service was cheerful and informative. Food was better than we expected and ambiance was fun. We look forward to supporting this coffee/cocktail bar. Great job Archive!!

Abhishek S.

Yelp
This place has a really chill vibe and the layout is very inviting and comfy. It has a nice industrial feel to it with the open layout and a huge bar in the middle. There's plenty of seating options all the way from some comfy chairs tables and couches in different corners of the big hall. I had the bread pudding, which is not traditionally made, is more like a cinnamon roll, but still really good. Their cocktails are amazing with a lot of unique choices. I would highly recommend anybody visiting downtown Salem to go here and try out their cocktails

Lacey E.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the quality of the food has gone down! We used to get the cauliflower tacos and herbed fries and they were STELLAR. But we went back recently, and everything was totally different. The fries were thicker and less seasoned and the cauliflower tacos were totally bland. Really unfortunate because that was one of our fav dishes in Salem! I did try brunch recently for the first time and it was totally acceptable! Nothing amazing, but satisfying brunch fare and a wide selection :)

Kat J.

Yelp
Quiet a fun bar with a lot of thought put into it. Each drink has a unique concoction and flavor, but you can't go wrong. The food it flavorful as appetizers for the table and Chatted with the owner about the technique and thought that goes into each food and drink on the menu. It changes regularly with the seasons and has a quieter milieu for drinks. There is indoor outdoor seating if you dare in the fall, but summer time makes that indoor/outdoor living more possible. The prices were a bit much, but the service was great. We hung out with our waitress and caught up after her shift to show her around town. Still unsure as a coffee place but might try back soon

Raven E.

Yelp
What an awesome find. New to the area and I'm slowly exploring. Came into this place looking for a bathroom and it was so cool I decided to stay. I had a mimosa and my significant other had a latte, we split some fries. My mimosa was fantastic, I'm told the latte was a little on the cold side but super delicious. The fries went fast! Can't wait to bring my family back.
