9 Arepas to Try Right Now | Eater DC

"The arepas at this two-year-old Silver Spring restaurant can be grilled, baked or fried and stuffed with over two dozen featured fillings or toppings including seven cheeses, grilled vegetables, tuna salad, bacon, scrambled eggs with onions and more. Prefer to hand off the decision-making process? The restaurant prepares specialty arepas including a traditional pabellon featuring black beans, shredded beef and plantains." - Lenore Adkins

I came here for lunch while visiting the area . I ordered the 4 mini arepas with a couple of different meats . I did fully enjoy the arepas , just felt like there could have been some good toppings to spice it up a bit . I did ask to exclude any cheese on it . Now the star of the show was definitely the guacamole with pork belly and fried plantains . Absolutely delicious!! Don’t leave here without getting that ! The owner was very welcoming , checked in on me and asked how the food was . Service was impeccable!

Google
I got the Bandeja Paisa con Carne Asada, which is a bit of a sampler plate. The chicharron and chorizo were good. The beef was ok. The white rice was cooked correctly. The arepa was ok. The maduros were not ripe or sweet (see photo). The beans were not well seasoned. The lady who took and brought our order was friendly and helpful. The tables were sticky. Overall, not worth the calories and I won’t be returning.

Google
Me and my wife visited Arepas Pues during the weekend, we drove over an hour an half because a Colombian friend of ours recommended us to eat here, this restaurant went over our expectations, the flavor of the food was magnificent, the service was exceptional and the restaurant itself it’s just beautiful, if this spot was closer to us we would definitely visit once a week, prices are amazing as well, you pay for what you get, hopefully coming back soon, the staff are very kind and attentive, thank you for the great experience, hope to see y’all soon

Google
We had dinner at the place, and all the food items were good. The arepas were specifically very good. We ordered the chicken soup, and it was good as well. It is a small casual place for dining. Overall, it's a great place for arepas.

Hector V.

Google
Great Colombian food experience. Everything was cooked fresh and tasted delicious. Will definitely recommend.

Jimena C.

Google
The food was great, the mango drink as well. I’m glad they offer a plate with a variety of arepas to try! Service was a little slow but overall it was a good meal.

Abonie B.

Google
food was delicious and authentic. service was good. i like the natural light by the window and being able to sit there.

Martha T.

Google
I loved the food. I had empanadas, several soups and bandeja paisa. I also liked being able to pace the courses because you can order and pay as you go. I’ll be back soon.

Yelp
Very friendly workers. Nice little vibe . The chicken arepa with a platano in it was oh so very good. Very authentic tasting

T S.

Yelp
Was eager to try the place. Good friendly people who are running a nice place. I think I don't like arepas. They are very heavy, lack vegetables. A little bland. I'll have to try them in another place to compare. The soup looked amazing here and I may go back just to try that.

Yelp
This place is a joke lol. $60 for 2 Bandeja Paisa and look at this portion size. When I saw the sausage and pork belly i had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming because what is this. It's so small. Attached are 2 pictures, the small looking one is for this restaurant. The other one that looks packed is another restaurant in College Park. Both the same price.... Portion difference is insane and flavoring wise this place is mediocre at best. Should've drove further to College Park. Sad

Yelp
food was delicious and authetic! service was good and i like sitting by the window watching the cars and people go by.

Yelp
After a movie at AFI we came to this restaurant, after eating here several years ago, and we again enjoyed the food. I ordered Yuca Frita as a starter and it was very good. For the main dish, I ordered the Arepa Basket that included 4 mini arepas, each with a separate filling. It was excellent. My wife ordered a large soup called Ajiaco, which she said was the best soup she has ever eaten. Service is efficient. The place looks simple and is based on self service- you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. But the food speaks for itself.

Yelp
Great place for Arepas in downtown silver spring! Even though the arepas were flavorful and filling, the real standout was the Chicharrón con Arepa. The side was so so delicious and one I feel like I do not find at most restaurants! The service was very quick given the casual nature of the restaurant. Would be a good place to grab a quick bite with someone else since the restaurant is fairly small as well!

Regan F.

Yelp
Food is very good a flavorful! I love their platters. Service is good, and the general ambiance/vibe is nice because of the music.

Matt D.

Yelp
Food is good. I've come this place many times and recommend it to friends. $10 for a black bean and cheese arepa is too much. I don't think I will be coming back any more.
google avatar

Nio W.

Yelp
These chicken empanadas are delicious but we ordered an arepa con carne and found a hair inside of it. That was disgusting! I don't imagine this happens often. I haven't eaten here in years and never had issues then. Makes me wonder if they wear hats or hair nets when they prep the food. I always get the food to go so I don't pay attention to the back kitchen. Would I come here again, hmmm ...possibly but I'd check if they were wearing hair nets this time. If this ever happens again, it's a wrap. The hair was not on top of the food either. It was inside of it.

Yelp
When you're from a country that is being represented at a restaurant, you look for quality and for the feeling that you're getting a home-cooked meal to satisfy any ounce of nostalgia. And I didn't like I got much of both. The only satisfaction I got was from the menu - they had things I haven't seen in most other places and then some. So in my second visit, I saw that they had chupe caraqueño? Yes please! Only problem? The soups were kind of too watery, and not that great. Not even close to what I'm accustomed to. And this applies also to the mondongo soup that I had in my first visit. The empanadas were Colombian-style and was just eh. The golfeados were good though even though it was dried-out (I fixed it at home though and was able to enjoy it). So really, this place suffers in quality. I think we're lucky to have other options in the DMV, at the very least - but hopefully someday they'll step up here at Arepa Pues.

Yelp
It might take a little while to get your order but it's worth it. I got two arepas and they were delicious! The corn cakes were perfectly crisp on the outside and the filling was plentiful and tasty.
google avatar

Dulce N.

Yelp
The food is fantastic, but OMG, ten stars for this place's ambiance. When we stepped inside, they had great merengue and salsa, and even though I am Honduran, those were the songs I used to dance to in middle school. Service was also on point!
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
I ordered the ajiaco soup for pick up. The soup was filling and definitely hit the spot. I do have a recommendation which is I would have loved limes and hot sauce packets when I picked up the soup. Not sure if it's provided when when dining in but that is a recommendation, not a knock on the restaurant. I can't wait to try other dishes from the restaurant.

Cesar R.

Yelp
The good news is that it's Colombian food. Bad news is, food tastes rushed, I ordered a bandeja paisa, my favorite Colombian dish, sadly food tasted burned. Arepa was hard not soft. Pork meat was also overcooked. Service was nice, which is the reason I'm given this restaurant 3 stars instead of 2.

Valerie V.

Yelp
The portions were small, and the food was "just OK." $10 for an arepa. The staff was very friendly. I just felt that the price was high for such small portions.
google avatar

Sini B.

Yelp
I saw this place across the street and had to stop by! If you never had an arepa.. you are missing out ;) There is ample seating and the music was a vibe. The staff helped me decide what I wanted. They were super helpful and nice. The food was prepared quickly. As someone from South America, I can say that the flavors were authentic. I had the arepa del dia with a malta. Basically what I used to have for breakfast growing up. It tasted just like it. I'm not sure about the parking situation but they are quite accessible by public transport. Make sure to give them a try.

Alfonso C.

Yelp
Worst ever Bandeja Paisa.... Ordered Steak came with shredded meat... Ordered bandeja Paisa (No beans came)... Ordered a coke ...(no coke)....and was charged ..$64 Dollars... Never will order from there again...
google avatar

Em H.

Yelp
Okay service, delicious chicken empanadas! Though the cashier wasn't very friendly, the chicken empanadas were so good! Though I didn't like the sauce that came with it, I found myself devouring 2.5 of the 4 empanadas I ordered. My husband polished off the rest when I got home. I would order from them a lot if I lived in the area!
google avatar

Nick Y.

Yelp
The arepas are so good and the trouble I came across was not knowing which one I wanted. Good thing the have a 4 some of mini arepas to try and all 3 are winners.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite before a show at the Fillmore. We got arrived at a reasonable time, hot off the pan and the staff delivered them to our table. I would have appreciated more sauce. The little containers were half full and we only got one for an order of two arepas. The pork belly was crispy and good, but the grilled veggies felt a bit more steamed and floppy versus grilled (no char or grill marks). The restaurant was pretty quiet and easy to find a spot to sit. I would have liked things like salt, pepper and hot sauce on the table.

Yelp
A hole in the wall Colombian spot located in Downtown Silver Spring. Solid Colombian dishes, I was very excited to see what the madness was about. I ordered the chicken tostones with a side of a cheese arepa and the verdict? Delicious, delicious, and delicious! The plantain base was fried to perfection and the pulled chicken had great flavor with generous portion. The arepa was hot and fresh and the buttery taste was dangerously good. They had medium-spicy sauces available to drizzle on your food and plenty of fresh juices and Colombian sodas to choose from. The restaurant had very few seats but I came in mid-day with a friend and had no issues. It's a self-serve restaurant and they take orders at the counter. Adding this to my list for when I have a craving for Colombian food!

Yelp
Delicious food! The cashier is super friendly and helpful! Usually get carry out but have eaten there a couple of times... it's all good, low key. Great soups and arepas!

Yelp
I have been OBSESSED with Pescado Frito and have been going to many restaurants trying to find the best in MD. This is by FAR the best I have found so far. So crispy and flavorful, especially when you dip it in the green sauce, get a butter arepa on the side with it and it's perfect Don't forget to order the tequenos! Amazing customer service
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
Popped into this spot for lunch to go. There were so many options I wanted to try, so I'll definitely be back! Loved the arepa de la casa, but the yucas fritas left a lot to be desired for me (felt like they could have been cooked longer and didn't have much flavor). This is a smaller restaurant, but does have some sit down seating inside. Parking garage around the corner if you need it. Prices are very reasonable!
google avatar

McKenzie P.

Yelp
So tasty! I got the arepa and it was a perfect size lunch! The tostones in it were perfect too
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
I have easily passed this place hundreds of times but finally tried them for lunch recently. I had never had arepas before trying the arepa basket, which is hands down the best option if you too are a newbie. You're give 4 "mini" arepas- avocado, shredded beef, shredded chicken, & roasted pork. All are absolutely delicious but my favorite (surprisingly from the carnivore) was the avocado! The 4 mini arepas are a filling meal for one person and easily a gateway to addiction!

Yelp
Very happy with my decision to check this place out. At first entry, ambiance is pretty poorly lit and dark, depressing tones. Servic is not friendly or warm, but passable. Come here for the FOOD! Get it as take out to have a more enjoyable ambiance to eat. I got one beef empanada, one chicken and one cheese. Chicken empanada amazing. Full of piquant spices (not hot, just flavorful). Beef empanada--interesting. Seemed to have some small bits of steamed potato--good. But chicken is vastly superior. Cheese was too bland for me. Kinda like bland mozzarella cheese fried in the corn meal crust. I am eager to try their arepas as well!

Yelp
El Ajiaco es todo una delicia! It's just like home in Colombia. I'm from Houston and was looking for a Colombian spot to eat for lunch and I stubbed upon this gem on yelp it did not disappoint! The agua panela was so delish, the empanadas are great, and lastly the Ajiaco was the best thing I've had in a while. We also ordered a Bandeja paisa they didn't blow my mind mostly for $19. We then had Oblejs we had figs with arepique and cheese. It was absolutely delish. I would highly recommend visiting!

Franco D.

Yelp

Yelp
I was definitely disappointed. In times of Covid19 we didn't get to eat our food at the restaurant. So we went there in the car and ordered, we waited about 30 minutes and when the food arrived we didn't get to look at it until we got home. My family and I were completely disillusioned. The beans were sour. As you can see the avocado did not look good and the "lengua en salsa" was not cooked well and it was really hard, we could barely eat it. We also ordered an Ajiaco, Beef Empanada, It was not a good service and I expected more knowing we paid over a 100 dollars.

Jane M.

Yelp
The food is okay but it's not worth the absolutely horrible service!!! Good luck on getting your order fixed if they get it wrong. We ordered food to go and by the time we got home we noticed 1 of the orders was wrong and since it was late we couldn't go back to get it fixed because the restaurant had already closed. So I went the next day and told them what happened and showed them the food and they were absolutely rude and told me that it's not their fault and refused to fix my order. Since I don't eat that food I had to throw it away right in front of them. Waste of food and money. I've had experienced horrible service at this place several times and I still kept going back because I tried not to take it too personally but this was the last straw. My family and I will never go back again. I hope this was worth losing a long time customers!
google avatar

Yenny M.

Yelp
Delicious empanadas and arepas to go. Ask for the sauces, they are a must with the empanadas. I would recommend the restaurant to update the inside a bit more to make it more welcoming.
google avatar

Ruth B.

Yelp
Vamos a empesar with the food I have better las empanadas de carne son buenas pero el services es horrible 55 en comida le dot 15 de propina y tuve Que Pedir agua few times and servilletas bueno = no vuelvo.
google avatar

Iris Z.

Yelp
Always have quick service. Their arepas are the best. We come at least once a week for their weekly specials. I love that this place is no frills with good food.
google avatar

Yelp
Although it does take some effort to get to, don't be detoured! The arepas here are made to order, the choices are endless. As a first timer, I asked the staff which one she would recommend for us. She initially asked us how hungry we were, luckily she did because they're quite filling. Each arepa was jam packed to spill at the brim, so if you're taking mouthfuls like me -- make sure you have a drink to help it all go down. My favorite between the three we ordered: La Pabellón, La Sureña, La Pelua has to be pabellón, many non points for flavor! The salty smokiness from the beef with sweet plantains is just right, all I'm missing is some crema to dip with each bite. We'll be back very soon to try their breakfast arepa and an entree!
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Yikes. Came here on NYE around 5pm and it took them over an hour to get us our food even though the place was only half full. We ordered a tamale and 2 arepas. The coffee was definitely instant, and we had to ask our server to clear the cups to make room. The tamale came out... like 45 min later and 75% of it was frozen. They brought us another one and it was fine but nothing to write home about. The arepas were okay; meat wasn't that flavorful or salty enough for that matter and the arepas themselves weren't either. I liked their slightly crispy texture, but they fell apart a bit. The sweet corn was cold, and so was the white cheese. Their homemade cheese was good though. They also forgot one of our ingredients... Overall, there are too many other restaurants to try in the area to feel the need to come back.

Katherine M.

Yelp
I'm originally from Colombia, visiting from Seattle, where there are not many options for traditional Colombian dishes. So, I was very pleasantly surprised to have found this place while visiting Maryland. I've returned several times to try different dishes.
google avatar

Christian W.

Yelp
Impressed our guests from out of town with array of items via takeout. Good all around quality and quantity.

Gclaudia P.

Yelp
Poor quality, smaller portions, burnt (empanadas) Prices higher than menu Be careful!! Will not go again VERY DISAPPOINTED

Yelp
I was walking around trying to kill some time before check-in at my hotel and stumbled upon this place. Not a lot of seating inside but it was 3pm so it wasn't super busy. I knew I wanted to try an arepa but there were so many choices so shout out to Heidy, who suggested the arepas basket so I could try a few different ones. Such a fantastic idea! I wanted to try a few appetizers too so I got the tajadas and the toston with guacamole (also suggested by Heidy). It didn't take long for my food to come out (not even 10 minutes) and she even got me a glass of water with lime. How's that for service?! Tajadas were piping hot and heavily sprinkled with queso blanco, a steal in my opinion for $4 and so delicious. The toston was a star too with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside but not dry on the inside and covered with luscious guacamole. They both exceeded my expectations and I kind of think of myself as a plantain connoisseur so that should tell you something. The arepas were really good too - thin with a tiny bit of crunch at the edges and filled to the brim with the different stuffings. I had to take some of my food to go because I ordered too much but I will definitely be looking forward to leftovers!
google avatar

Hiral D.

Yelp
Best side of rice and black beans I've had. They add cilantro and spices and it's delicious on its own. Also get the empanadas with the dipping sauce. I'd say all are delicious but I had the cheese one and it was awesome. Very filling; a little food here goes a long way! I shared the rice with a coworker and was still full!
google avatar

Jannet M.

Yelp
The arepas & tequenos are delicious! Love coming here for the food. It has a small dining area and you have to park on the street or near by parking garages.

Yelp
OVERPRICED....I visited Arepa Pues yesterday for lunch after not visiting for some time and noticed some changes had been made. The first thing I noticed which didn't phase me was that they no longer have servers, you must walk up to the counter to order which didn't bother me. The reason I stated that is because if you are reducing the overall level of service so should the price of food. I ordered a plate, avocado and a drink and it came out to $23 which is insanely overpriced for Latin food. If you're going to charge that insane amount please make sure it's a full service restaurant and that I don't have to throw away my trash after the expensive bill. I won't be coming back nor recommending anyone. Food is mediocre, over priced and cold when I received it.

Adrienne B.

Yelp
Hard 3 stars - $9.99 for one arepa? Why so expensive? And they don't melt the cheese. No water or milk available. Place kind of run down but the cute register guy was nice. WAY too much butter on the Mantequilla Arepa. Blood sausage was weird. High calorie weird Colombian sodas only drink option. Amble seating.
google avatar

Ann R.

Yelp
Considering there aren't many Colombian places in the area, this place does the job. I always get the arepas basket and chicharron on the side. I like variety in my food and the arepas basket gives me all of that in one meal. I've come back here a few times and I will definitely come back again.
google avatar

Gellie E.

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday afternoon. While they have more than just arepas on their menu, of course, I had to order an arepa! One arepa ($7) was surprisingly filling. Everything was nicely seasoned. I ordered La Rumbera (pork shoulder and cheddar cheese). I would've liked the cheese to be more melty and incorporated better with the pork, because the way they stuffed the arepa, they put the pork in first and then topped it with cheese. On the plus side, they gave a lot of cheese and it was like having two different arepas - one with pork and one with cheese - but sometimes a girl just wants one pork-and-cheese arepa, if you know what I mean. We also ordered the beef tostone and the plantain was nice and salty. The beef was a little on the tough side, but overall the dish was enjoyable and filling. It came with a spicy sauce on the side (which also goes nicely with the arepa). I liked the ambiance. They have artwork, flags, music, and a coordinating color scheme to add to the ambiance. Our waitress was attentive, provided excellent service, and gave us everything we needed. She even apologized when our tostone appetizer came out after the arepas. A+ service. I can't wait to come back to try some more menu items!

Yelp
2nd time coming here 1st time I didn't agree on the dishes 2nd try great improvement and they don't even need extra condiments well done from a Salvadorean here keep it up! And I'm willing to come back. Bandeja paisa is phenomenal btw and they have a version of Salvadorean Cola Champagne.

Yelp
#1 Reina Pepiada (5 NOMs) Oh, yea who doesn't like some big chunks of chicken, avocado, and mystery sauce! Together with corn tortilla, they make for a great and filling nomnom. You get to enjoy the full flavor of the ingredients because everything is cut into large portions and not heavy on the sauce. #3 La Pelua (4 NOMs) An order for hungry meat lover! Its all about that shredded beef here as the main ingredient with some cheese. We sure love the meat, but also love more things. It left us wanting some sweet plantain, avocado, or some other great toppings they have. #4 La Catira (4 NOMs) Don't melt the cheese, now that's the motto of this place as many arepas cheese is cold. At first, we thought it was a bit weird since its a hot dish, but don't knock it until you try it. You really get this sharp cheese flavor combined with grilled chicken breast and sauce together. #5 Perico (4 NOMs) Breakfast arepa is a breakfast of champions for lunch and dinner. Now, this egg lover's tummy is super excited. Lots of eggs, spices, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Just love the fact you can taste the eggy goodness in every bite. Goes great with grilled corn tortilla, spicy and mild sauce. #6 La de Pernil (5 NOMs) Pork pork pork! La de Pernil quickly became one of our favorite orders because of all that pork shoulder goodness. It was so flavourful and tender that you might just orgasm in your mouth. Seasoned to perfection and combined with their special sauce, this makes for one great nomnom in every bite. #7 La Surenal (5 NOMs) Forget just one meat, go for two with grilled chicken and chorizo (pork sausage) with avocado and white cheese. One of our favorite arepa orders from this place. Its the two meat combination with avocado that makes it so good. Definitely a must for chorizo lovers! It also one very beautiful Arepa that just screams for you to eat it. #8 La Vegetarian (3 NOMs) There are arepas even for vegetarians here. After all, you always need to get your greens. It has way more toppings then meat version with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, peppers, and avocado. Sadly no cheese, but hey you can always add it for an extra cost. Not our favorite as their meats taste way better, but still, think this is a solid and good nomnom. #9 La Safrina (4 NOMs) Similar and yet different, this dish taste kind of like the #4 La Catira, but this one has different sauce and avocado. Avocado always makes things better and this was no exception. While it didn't wow us since we tried something very similar its a great way to enjoy more toppings without paying extra. Plus with more sauce and avocado it made for a more gooey arepa. #10 Pabellon (4 NOMs) We are making our way through their meaty things with Pabellon arepa, a shredded beef with large slices of sweet plantain. Plantain combined with meat always taste great. Its all about that different flavor combination. One of the more heavy dishes since they just pile all that meat on top. Oh, My!!! #11 La Rumbera (4 NOMs) You know you love your meaty meats like the roasted pork shoulder in La Rumbera arepa. It may contain only two ingredients, but there is enough pork for two toppings. We are big fans of big meat Well seasoned and very tender it makes for a great combination of cheddar cheese and spicy sauce. Build Your Own You don't have to just order from the menu and instead can build your very own ultimate Arepa. With so many different toppings you can come back and always create something new. Few toppings are not even included in the regular menu like Ham, Bacon, Fried Pork Rings, and so much more. Sweet Plantain (5 NOMs) There is more than just cheese in there. trust it. Even though it's fully drowning in cheese you can still taste the sweet plantain, avocado, and tofu. Together they make for great flavor and texture combination. You get this nice savory and sweet flavor combination. Sadly on our recent trip, we found out that they no longer serving tofu. Vegeterian (3 NOMs) This our take on veggie, after all, its good to get your daily dose of greens. Even if they are inside a fried tortilla. The veggie toppings tasted very fresh and flavourful that even meat eater would enjoy.

Yelp
Great Colombian food , Service is fast and food is delicious. Highly recommended , try the trucha frita my favorite
