"This Waltham restaurant has gained popularity among locals and students from nearby Brandeis University. Its menu is carb-heavy, featuring mainly Northwestern-style noodle dishes and a variety of housemade dumplings that can only be found at this restaurant, such as the Aries leek pie and fish dumplings." - Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

"This Waltham noodle and dumpling shop opened in early 2019 and is serving up Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles with and without beef. Eaters can also snack on pig ears, duck, and a variety of pan-fried and steamed dumplings. Aries is open for takeout and delivery." - Terrence Doyle

"For the Globe’s “Quick Bite” column, Kara Baskin visits Aries Noodle & Dumpling in Waltham for northern Chinese food, made by chef Sean Zhang (previously of Somerville’s longtime dumpling destination, Wang’s Fast Food). The new restaurant is already quite busy, and Baskin makes note of a few dishes, including “pleasingly juicy” shrimp dumplings, a “just spicy enough” Sichuan-style pork “with plenty of chunks of tender meat,” and a savory Chinese crepe, “which looks like a burrito in an omelet suit.” The pace is slow and the lines can be long, but Baskin deems it “worth the wait.”" - Dana Hatic

Google
Aries really impressed me with their chives pockets which were crispy and perfectly filled. The fried pork dumplings were also delicious and I love how they already added vinegar to all the dumplings. They have noodles and dumpling in their name and they did not disappoint on either. I also got the pork and chives dumplings as well as the beef udon. They were both delicious. Easily and highly recommend!

Google
This place is outstanding and is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Massachusetts. The food is incredible and the staff there are so friendly. There is a really interesting menu that has everything you could want. The spicy hot pot with lamb is amazing and they have one of the best cucumber salads I’ve had

1. Appetizer Spicy Duck Slices ($12.99) from @ariesnoodleanddumpling. Looking at the picture on the takeout menu, it seems like you would get around five slices of duck breast. However, what you get is half a duck sliced on the bone sitting in a pool of chili oil and soy sauce topped with chili peppers. The duck was tasty and tender and had been rendered down perfectly. Yes, this might not be for everyone since there are tons of bones, but I don't mind. It was delicious! They now have a helpful new menu that includes pictures. 2. Cold Water Shrimp ($12.95). This is, in fact, the long-missed Swedish shrimp. I never thought that I would encounter these guys over here. The texture was off a tad, but not by much, considering that these are previously frozen. These guys are tasty! The dipping sauce was also really delicious. I would absolutely have overlooked these if it wasn't for the picture in the new menu. The waiter tried to translate where they come from, and his phone said the North Pole, and that's pretty close. The North Sea would have been more accurate. Anyone else serving these? 3. The menu said Smoked & Grilled Lamb Chops (27.99) at @ariesnoodleanddumpling. What is should have said was Lamb Ribs. They kept the meat part that is normally removed on chops that is nice and fatty. These were absolutely delicious. Served with cumin and chili.

Google
This place is highly recommended by my Waltham friend. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with enough seating space. The service and the food are pretty good! Came here for their signature Lanzhou Noodle Soup. Turned out we had too many dishes that we wanted to try… ordered Aries’ Beef Offal Noodle, Spicy Duck Slices, Spicy & Numbing Pork Intestines Stir Fried Pot, Chinese Crepes, Stir Fried Beef Pancakes… for two… and the server stopped us for ordering more. The Noodle came with a large bowl, the soup was light and perfect, Spicy Stir Fried Pot and Stir Fried Pancakes were good too. The Duck and Crepes was ok. Overall, I’ll always come back!

Google
Authentic Chinese Family Style!! Great price point, delicious food (I'm talking GOOD) and personable service. You can have most anything on the menu under $15 and each family style dish is absolutely enough for a single person. What's more is the Boba shop next store (also owned by the same person) provides an amazing dessert relief in the form of sweet drinks and crepes. The only negatives I found were the steamed dumplings were not to my preference and for a busier time more servers may be warranted. To be fair I went very early in the morning and had no issues with service 👍

Google
aries has great noodles and dumplings with many flavorful dishes and choices! nice authentic chinese food with many options. the beef noodle soup is wonderful; very flavorful beef broth with light springy noodles and mild chili pepper. it was definitely my favorite. the pork dumplings are great! they have a generous amount of pork inside and nice chewy crispy skin. you definitely need to order these. the prawn with napa cabbage is also delicious with a flavorful mild seafood broth. the duck was good, but nothing special. i also got a plum juice, which was nice. they have an ordering style in which you order with your phone and the order goes directly to the kitchen. it is very efficient and i prefer it to the tradition restaurant ordering system. the food came quickly and the staff were kind. the food was delicious and there are many other options that i am interested in trying. i will definitely visit again!

Google
It’s rare to find northern Chinese style restaurants like this one near Boston. We tried many signature dishes including fish dumplings, Chinese crepes, and the signature duck dish. All of them exceeded my expectation. Sadly we didn’t order the chef’s specialty noodle soup, guess that is one of the reasons we will have to go back soon.

Yelp
My friend and I met here for lunch. It's a very authentic Chinese restaurant with dishes that some westerners may find scary. I had the mapo tofu and it was great. I do recommend this place if you are looking for authentic Chinese food.

Tiffany P.

Yelp
solid hole in the wall chinese spot. highly recommend the potstickers, beef soup, and tofu and pork. flavors are delicious and the service was good. the older man helped us with extra plates and napkins. we ordered 6 dishes and barely had space on our table for our own, tiny plates. wish they were bigger or that we were at a bigger table.

Jamie D.

Yelp
Great ambiance and nice background music. The food was very authentic and affordable. The service did get busy during lunch rush however but we weren't in a hurry. Highly recommend!

Deanna B.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Northern style Chinese food. The service was efficient. There was a good amount of seating. It's not standard Americanized Chinese food, it's in the Northern Chinese style. I did get udon noodles and their pan fried homemade pork dumplings which were wonderful.

Yelp
We tried this restaurant this weekend. Its conveniently located in Waltham Square, right next to Moody St and Main St intersection. There is a parking lot right next to this place, but it costs money. Don't park there as Main st has plenty of free parking. The restaurant looks pretty clean and every single customer was asian, so this place has to be good. And it was good. I had the sizzly chicken in brown sauce, which is a perfect combo of sweet and savory with boneless chicken. This dish remains hot due to the sizzling bowl, and I caved and just dumped my rice in there (it got a little on the salty side though). The 2 noodle dishes were good too. The lanzhou beef noodles tastes like pho. The spicy beef soup was decent. I like the oversized bowls and the spoons that sit on the edge of your bowls. This place has very little interaction between the staff and customers. Could be a bad thing or good thing. They greeted us, let us sit anywhere and said order via the app by scanning the code at the table. That was fine, but we had to flag someone down when I had to ask if my chicken in brown sauce comes with rice or not (it didn't). I also asked if they have the chinese crepes that I see in the Yelp photos (they do not). The crepes are offered next door at ozone, which is owned by the same owner. I wonder why not just create an opening in the kitchen between the 2 places and let folks get some boba and crepes? Back to the menu....It did seem like most of us had to order off of the app....but when leaving the restaurant, I noticed one table had an actual menu. I'm wondering if perhaps they are having the "americanized" asian crowd order off the app vs letting the more "traditional" asians order off a different menu? Just my own curiosity. The food was good, but not so much that it blew me away or was it special. The prices are ok...or a little tad on the expensive side, but still okay with me. The place is clean. The people are friendly if you happen to interact. Parking is easy on main street or at the lot next door.

Yelp

Lyusha G.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this place. We had: Beef pot - delicious and very spicy with those mouth numbing Szechuan peppers Spicy fish - really good Cucumbers - the perfect balance to a spicy meal We also had the bean paste noodle - great noodle texture pork dumplings and chive pockets - these fell a little flat Wish they served beer :) Service is courteous and prompt. You order from an app, not a waiter.

Bichen Z.

Yelp
The Aries is definitely one of my regular places to have lunch and dinner. It is actually not a big restaurant with magnificent interior design, but the food is extremly good. The price is fair. You probably won't go wrong with ordering there. The texture of the noodles is extraordinary. A few cuisine received less attention but is highly recommended as you barely find it other places: 1) Aries Roasted Chicken Carcass 2) Cold Port Knuckle In Jelly 3) Smoked & Grilled Lamb Chop 4) Health-Preserving Lamb Pot. There is a parking lot right next to the restaurant, which is so convenient. Lastly but not the least, you may receive extra discount if you pay in cash.

ZhuZhu L.

Yelp
Overall a good experience. Order your meal through the app directly. Tuesday night was quiet and has plenty of space in the restaurant. Price is decent with generous portion

J Q.

Yelp
Most authentic Chinese food I have had in this region. Absolutely love the Szechuan spicy fish fillet soup with cabbage. Such tender flounder and the taste is exquisite over rice. The pork and chive dumplings are also very good as well as the beef with scallions. Mapo tofu is also served here, but for my taste, the sauce can be a little thick, but still very flavorful when served over rice. If you are looking for an authentic Chinese food experience, Aries Noodle and Dumpling is the best place to go in Waltham.

Val S.

Yelp
Service was quick and efficient and my pickup order was nicely packaged but the quality and taste of the food was not so good. I wanted something soupy and warm and was disappointed.

Wern O.

Yelp
TLDR: baller Chinese food Loved my food here. Every dish hit what I was hoping for. I got the cold chili chicken appetizer which had the right amount of spice and bite and flavor with incredibly tender chicken pieces. The chili white fish was also delectably soft with the perfect amount of heat. The beef noodle soup comes in a huge bowl with plenty of medicinal flavor - though I do wish it had some vegetables inside as well. Really glad I came here and planning on coming back!

Ronny T.

Yelp
A find for good noodles and dumplings. Lots to choose from on the menu and they all look authentic. Service was efficient and attentive. We had the black bean noodles, gyoza dumplings, and the steamed dumplings. They were all delicious. I don't come to Waltham much anymore, but will be sure to stop by again when I'm in town. Get some good eats here!

William H.

Yelp
Service was ok. But the dumplings were bit salty and didn't taste very freshly made.

Nan K.

Yelp
The texture of the noodles is amazing! Loved both broths but if u like stronger flavors go for the spicy pork ribs noodles. Can't wait to try other dumplings as well

Yoo-Jin O.

Yelp
Soup dumplings and hong sha ro are a must here! Very cozy home-cooked vibes and the servers are friendly and welcoming :)

Yan Z.

Yelp
I don't understand why the rating of this restaurant is not even above 4. Today is the second time we dined at this place. The food is very authentic, specially the Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles. The taste and quality of noodles can definitely compare to what I ate in China. So far every dish I tried is very good. Both of visits ended in one hour, we must be super lucky. But nowhere else I went can get the food on your table faster than this place. Highly recommended!

Wing S.

Yelp
I love different kind of noodles soup, not many options to choose from. Food is great and You place your order through your phone by scanning the QR code they provide on the table then the waiter will bring out the food to you once it is ready. The only thing I didn't give them a five star is that they require you to give them 18% tips which there wasn't any service provided by the waiter. All they do for the whole time was bringing out your food from the kitchen.

Nikki N.

Yelp
They recently updated their menu, and are back to their regular business hours and offer dine in services. I love their Lanzhou beef noodle soup and dumplings- fresh and flavorful. Broth is clean.

Tara D.

Yelp
First off, looking for a quick lunch after an appointment nearby and this little gem popped up on my Postmates app as on my driving route to Rhode Island. It is located conveniently on Main Street in Waltham, with a parking lot to the right of the restaurant (metered). I ordered the luncheon specials which as 3 for $27 (to go) and a soup and dumplings, for in restaurant. The service Was superb and not knowing what to order, the server gave excellent recommendations. ("What do you like?"). The fish dumplings were similar to the pork dumplings but with a more subtle flavor. The portion, however could feed a family of 4! The soup was flavorful and the broth homemade and delicious! The real surprise, which I had later that night at work, was the luncheon specials. Firstly, my experience with lunch specials is they are heavy in cornstarch or batch made with clear differentiation from the regular priced dish in terms of freshness. However, the shrimp with vegetables had no cornstarch, the vegetables were fresh and delicately cooked and the shrimp was plentiful and jumbo variety. The beef with long horn peppers was the most delicious dish I have eaten. Excellent balance of peppers to sliced beef, meaning every bite was the perfect combination of peppers and beef! A must try! The last dish was a shredded pork dish which was slightly sweet. It was also fresh and balanced out the other flavors nicely. In short, try this hidden gem! You will not be disappointed!

F. K.

Yelp
Food was authentic and tasty. We had spicy fish and dumplings. Service was prompt. They have a new online ordering service for dining in.

Shashu B.

Yelp
This place is outstanding and is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Massachusetts. The food is incredible and the staff there are so friendly. There is a really interesting menu that has everything you could want. The spicy hot pot with lamb is amazing and they have one of the best cucumber salads I've had

Gillian S.

Yelp
I have no idea why this restaurant was rated quite low! It was amazing!! Perfect place for a home-cooked meal. Everything I ordered was so good that I can't even choose a favorite! Portions were quite big too so you're sure to be full! The service was also really great as the server was super friendly. Granted I only saw one server there but he was very quick and it was really easy to get his attention in case we needed anything. 10/10 would definitely go back there no doubt!

Chess L.

Yelp
Beef noodle soup $14.99 was extremely disappointing, beef was tough and dry, avoid. The spicy chicken appetizer $9.99 was amazing. Will try their dumplings and lamb noodle soup my next visit. Place was filled with guests and non-stop pick up order. Very authentic.

Songyi W.

Yelp
A newer Chinese place on Main St that replaced the old Sushi Box restaurant. The Chinese crepe (煎饼) is probably their most popular item on the menu. I thought it tasted pretty good, but it wasn't as flavorful as I would like it to be (the ones we get in Beijing usually come with more scallion, cilantro, and sauces). We also tried the Hand Pulled noodles (兰州拉面), which comes in a clear broth and topped with a couple slices of beef. I enjoyed the broth but thought the noodles were a little bit too soft... I did really like their Potstickers (dumplings) and spicy pig ears (cold dish). Would recommend these. Service was very slow on our second visit on a Saturday (took over 30 mins to get our dishes). They only had a couple of waiters and they seemed a bit overwhelmed. We visited for the 2nd time on a week day night around 7:30 and somehow they had ran out of many dishes on the menu....would still like to try more items on the menu - just hope that they will have them next time!

Zhaoping G.

Yelp
Very authentic Chinese food, tastes just like food back in China. Everything is delicious, price is very reasonable. Discovered this restaurant during our short visit to Waltham. Highly recommend it!

Milan W.

Yelp
We are mostly vegetarian and enjoyed everything we tried - cucumber salad, eggs and tomato, stir fried pancakes with veggie, prawn and cabbage, veggie hot pot, egg and tofu, lotus roots in brown sauce. Very authentic Chinese food. Looking forward to coming back!

Thu N.

Yelp
Went today, which is a Friday night. The restaurant was packed! Good food. Large proportions. Fast services. Happy customers! Definitely going to come back here!

Xiaocong Y.

Yelp
Specifically came here with great anticipation, but was so disappointed. The first thing encountered upon entering was poker-faced staff with a terrible attitude. The service personnel were indifferent and neglectful. The beef in the beef noodle soup was so tough that it was impossible to chew.

Diana J.

Yelp
Worst Restaurant I've eaten at. Got food poisoning here after eating their handmade meatball soup. Also, terrible service and they charge a mandatory 18% gratuity tip. Your tip is what customers give based on your service and shouldn't be a fixed mandatory fee... and to top it all off they expect an additional regular tip on top of the mandatory 18% Gratuity tip. Total scam artists here. Stay away unless you like bad food that gives you food poisoning and a ridiculous gratuity charge.

Catie C.

Yelp
Drive by so many times and finally made a point to try this for dinner. I particularly wanted to check out the Lanzhou hand pulled noodle soup. It's not easy to find a savory noodle soup around the area! All 3 of us decided to try the same dish. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles. My preference is chewy noodles. The savory soup also had a generous portion of sliced beef. The only drawback with this is that the 3 soups did not come out all together because they cook them individually. Finding a good dish of pig's ear is like finding a needle in the haystack. Finally found the needle here. Flavorful with a kick! It annoys me when places don't separate out the individual pieces and leave it congealed together after going thru the slicer. Love it when I eat savor one strand at a time! I will definitely come back to try other dishes and have the pig's ear again.

Vickie L.

Yelp
An authentic Chinese restaurant featuring in northern China flavors! Tastes just like home! I had my birthday dinner here with friends because in Chinese culture you're supposed to have awesome noodles on your birthday to wish you a long and happy life! I think Aries did a decent job about awesome noodles! Lanzhou Hand Pulled Noodle - tastes just like the north-western style noodle soup that I had in China. Clear soup but savory and flavorful! Chinese Crepes - this is my favorite! Note that although it didn't specify, the sauce in the crepe is actually a little bit spicy. I have been here a couple of times and never left unsatisfied :) Large space, nice staff and reasonable price. I will come back as often as I can!

Garvin C.

Yelp
We had a good lunch meal here ... the lunch specials are a good deal and there are several options to choose from. We ordered three different items, all of which were delicious. I really enjoyed the horned green pepper with pork (spicy) and the five spice tofu stir fries. The dumplings were also good, and didn't take too long to come out. The folks that ran the place were attentive. They do a lot of take out business here. A lot of local Chinese folks come here, so the food is probably pretty good consistently. This place isn't in the most obvious location .... it is near a corner with a public parking adjacent to it.

John D.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Authentic . I wish I had friends to enjoy this food with but was traveling alone on business

J S.

Yelp
Aries' Noodle And Dumpling replaces the recently closed Sushi Box across from Waltham Common. They are currently in their soft opening according to the Waltham Patch: https://patch.com/massachusetts/waltham/aries-noodle-dumpling-now-open-main-street The interior looks only slightly remodeled from the previous restaurant. A very short menu, highlighting at the top the Chefs Special of "Lan Zhou" hand-pulled noodles, essentially lamian beef noodle soup, so I ordered that ($12.99). A large, flat bowl of thinly sliced beef, moderately chewy noodles (about double the thickness of spaghetti), and a small amount of vegetables in a beef broth. Although it was pleasant on a cold day, I could have gone for more vegetables. However, I'm not an expert on lamian noodles, so I'll leave it for others to comment on how representative it is. Interestingly, there is a large metal counter in the front window, so it looks like they may be setting up to eventually do the noddle pulling in view of the customers, like you might see in Flushing NY. The menu also has a variety of dumplings and I tried some of the pan-fried pork ones (6 for $4.99), which were of the open-ended variety your rarely see. Definitely tasty and well-fried. Asked for a Diet Coke, but they don't have any diet soft drinks. Service was pleasant and reasonably quick, although I was there very early and there were only a handful of customers. There is easy parking in the small city lot next door (depending on time of day) for $1.25 for 2 hours by PayByPhone.

Hong W.

Yelp
Amazing food,The beef noodle soup was delicious. Great service the service was fast . It was traditional Chinese food.Highly recommended for tourists and the people who live in Boston .

Jason C.

Yelp
I will forever be a customer for one dish this place offers: Aries Smoked and Grilled Lamb.春风风味熏羊排 Wow. I mean wow. I'm a lamb person but I've never had such a lamb dish with so much flavor. Extremely Tender and Smoky, this dish uses a special cut of lamb that I never had in other places in the US. The smoky flavor is different from that of US BBQ. It has a very typical flavor profile from northern China, where I was born. I was initially skeptical about the $25 price point. But hey, trying this dish was one of the best food decisions I made.

Shanaaz M.

Yelp
Lan Zhou noodles and chilli oil - u can't go wrong. It was so SO good. I'll definitely be going back to try the spicy and numbing stir fry pot.

Eric H.

Yelp
Really enjoy the chili oil, but I think this is the last day I'll be going saw a mouse running across the floor in the kitchen doorway !

Rich C.

Yelp
My favorite place for lunch in metro west. Love their dumplings and noodles. Fast friendly service and clean establishment.

Jimmy B.

Yelp
Excellent all around. Very fresh, good quality ingredients. Tastefully prepared. Friendly informal atmosphere. (And last straw for me on believing any average ratings from Yelp. Too many bogus reviews going in both directions--note that all the negative reviews here are from people with a handful of reviews they posted all on the same day. Fishy.)

Albert S.

Yelp
They don't do hand pulled ramen as Lanzhou Ramen should do but advertise Chinese famous Lanzhou ramen. They explained that was because their ramen master was gone. However, should they change the menu to "noddle soup", or something and don't put the Lanzhou ramen on their big window? I am totally fine with their regular Chinese noodle. Should they cheat their customers with some famous food name? to who didn't know what that was? Their ramen tastes so normal. No special character than any supermarket noodles. We also ordered a Sihuan dish, Fiqi feipian, came out totally different meat/material and no that famous Sichuan dish taste at all. There was another dish we had was too spicy than expected and there was no markup on their menu that was spicy. No waiters or waitress, you eat in the restaurant but need to order online by Their barcode. We had some discussion about extra food we ordered, but we don't think his attitude was nice. Especially they forced to add tip 18% before tax on bill (You have to pay tax for their tip). Not what you like to offer. We always pay tip but we never been forced to give. Furthermore, I was scared with their reply for my low star review. Of course I was afraid of going to their restaurant again. So do you!

David L.

Yelp
Great duck, dumplings and noodles ! Great customer service as well. Parking is right next door.

Jay L.

Yelp
Chinese crepes is the best among the restaurants I have tried in Boston area. Pan fried dumplings also taste good. We ordered both hand pulled noodles and machine made noodles. They taste very different, machine made tastes more chewy and the other one more soft.

Angela W.

Yelp
Finally got chance to try this new restaurant. I live in belmont and it only took me 10 mins to drive and parking is extremely easy. We ordered "Lanzhou hand pulled noodle", "fried dumpling with pork", "stir fried shrimp", "wasabi sauce pork" and fish filet. I love stir fried shrimp and fish filet so much, it is very tasty and hot. Wasabi pork is my first time ever had. Not that strong wasabi and pretty good. My baby loves noodle. You can see it from my video shot. :) love this restaurant and would definitely recommend.

Robert P.

Yelp
I'm so happy that a new spot specializing in hand made noodles & dumplings is in Waltham. I just met the owner and Eric and Aries are wonderful people. Feel good about eating local, because the food is definitely worth it!

Huang L.

Yelp
very traditional Chinese noodle, so appreciate I can have it in Waltham. Definitely come to try it

Violetta Y.

Yelp
Good new place in neighborhood to have a lunch! We enjoyed our noodle soup and dumplings! Food was cooked pretty fast!

Chengyang H.

Yelp
Hundred percent authentic Chinese food! Shredded pork with Yu Shang sauce was great , reminds me of my hometown.
