The 23 Best Restaurants In Amsterdam 2024

"A restaurant that can straddle the line between comforting familiarity and buzzy newness is a rare find. If you want something interesting but aren’t necessarily willing to gamble on the hottest spot in town, 101 Gowrie is where you want to be. The kitchen churns out culture-straddling dishes like tagliolini bolognese with ramen and North sea squid, Chinese pancakes doused in hollandaise, and crispy new potatoes floating on vanilla espuma that remind us of dipping McDonald's fries in ice cream. Come here when you’re looking for food that’ll surprise you, but know that the dining room atmosphere is more straightforward than the menu and the background hip-hop adds to the low-key feel." - paolo espanola

Arles

"Arles brings Provence to Amsterdam. The prints on the walls of this bustling little bistro hark back to the hometown of the chef, who also shares his love of jazz music here (get a table in the dining room at the front if you prefer a quieter space). His culinary style is neo-bistro – a fresh take on the familiar flavours of French cuisine. Think the earthy flavour of beef cheeks cooked in red wine with buttery carrots or a new take on rice pudding. The set menu changes monthly and offers unbeatable value for money!" - Michelin Inspector

Arles was a great experience. We dropped by on short notice and received great service. And the food was delicious. Especially the pork belly dish I had was a winner. The cod was really good as well. They have a good selection of wine that should suit every palate and price point.

Quite nice! We visited Arles for a dinner. It is a cozy and relaxing place consisting of three small dining areas. Our table was at the back of the restaurant, in a closed yard type. The decoration was simple and warm, as it should be, while attenton has been paid in details. It was slightly noisy, but could be expected since it was full. Service was spot on! Nice work. We tried the trhee course menu. It started with a really tasty amuse bush, with beatroot as teh main ingredien - a really refreshing way to start your dinner. Later, what came as a starter was quite unique, and all the ingredients blended beutifully with each other. As a main dish we served with cod, really tasty combination of flavors in every bite, probably one of the best prepared cods we have ever tried. The thirds course was a rice pudding, which was nothing special, a small downgrade compared to the rest dishes. The wine card, consisting only of french wines was unque and rich, our wine was nice. Overall it was a nice experience and would reccomend. However it would be more wise to try the ala cart compared to the set menu, in order to try more flavors.

We had our anniversary dinner. Atmosphere was nice, personel was super lovely. The food was simply amazing! Also it was exciting to hear that they have gotten one Michelin star on 6th October 😍 definetely a gem!

Google
Amazing experience. A very cute restaurant. Small and cozy. I ordered two oysters as a starter, one cooked and one raw; both were finger-licking good. Then I decided to choose the 5-course menu. The waiters were charming and attentive, explaining each dish in detail. The menu started with fresher dishes, progressing to the duck, and ended with dessert, which was also refreshing. I thought everything was delicious.

I celebrated my birthday together with my family and we had a great time. The staff is super friendly and the food is amazing! And for such a gourmet restaurant the vibe is super chill and cosy. Would definitely come again.

Google
I don’t usually leave a review when the food is good but this place deserves it ! We got the 4 courses menu and it was amazing from the start to the end. The sauces are extremely well executed and so tasteful. The service was also very good.

Google
Great quality. Service was super. Fast, everyone kind and enthusiast. Meals articulated enough and full of flavor (probably just one of the main course was not standing as same level as all the rest). Nice wines, price totally fair. Thank you for the great evening and experience

Yelp
I made reservations and they take a 20 euro deposit immediately. The service was attentive and friendly. I got the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. The presentation was good. I think the restaurant is trying hard for a Michelin star, but something is off. $150 per person is rather expensive for ok food. I recommend avoiding the tasting menu and going a la carte.

Yelp
Delicious chef's tasting menu. Lovely service. So good - lamb that was braised like a short rib so good!

Yelp
Michelle one star with the reasonable price, it has a very small offering for menu but I would recommend the chiefs choice you get to try out all the different dishes and the price is about 68 euro per person. For 3 course it's 39 and 4 course 50 euro. The service is good too all the waiter speak English and they give very good explanations of the menu.

Yelp
Arles is an excellent french restaurant in the charming De Pjip neighborhood of Amsterdam! Their menu is short and sweet and they offer three or four course meal selections. We went in autumn, so I had the butternut squash soup with the duck main and my husband had the ricotta ravioli with pork main. Both meals were exceptional! For dessert, we tried the smoked ice cream and the lemon baked apple. We also had wonderful service the entire night. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. It made the experience that much better. What a gem of a restaurant!

Yelp
We walked into a brown bar in Amsterdam because we really wanted to know what all the hype was about these "brown" bars. While drinking our beers in the U.S. equivalent of a dive bar, a couple from England walks in and we start chatting them up because everyone else there speaks Dutch, and being from America and all we're too egotistic to speak any other language other than English. Same with the British I guess, hence why we got along immediately. Not too far into our conversation we start talking about food and they bring up the "amazing" French restaurant next door that just opened up. The woman, who actually turned out to be French, has a nephew that started as a chef there, and the couple could not stop raving about their awesome nephew and how amazing the food was at this restaurant. "Arles!" she exclaimed. "It's where I'm from. South of France. That's the name of the restaurant. You must try it." They would not let up on how amazing the food was and how badly they wanted us to try it. They had apparently been visiting their nephew in Amsterdam on a weekend trip. About half an hour later her nephew walks in through the door, apparently on a break or not working at the restaurant at the time. We met him - quite the authentic Frenchman. Admittedly, we were skeptical. On one hand they were British (so who were they to know about good food?), but on the other she was French - as were her nephew and the restaurant - the pinnacle of great cuisine. It was a toss up. We went home, contemplating it, but not too seriously. The restaurant happened to be right around the corner from the brown bar and where we were staying and, given how cold it was for the winter, it seemed pretty appealing to just be able to walk down the street for dinner. We checked the prices online and a 3 course meal will run you 34 euros, or around $35 at the time of writing this. Our curiosity and the excellent prices for a 3-course meal was what tipped us over from "maybe we'll try it" to "yes, let's give it a shot". I am SO glad we did. It was honestly the best meal we had in Amsterdam and for the quality of food and presentation it was a STEAL for the price. Bonuses: - They give you free still water. - The bread and butter is actually really good. (Embarrassingly, for 3 people we ate a total of 3 baskets of bread.) - Every dish we had was really good, if not amazing. The presentation was way more than you'd ask for for $35. - 3-courses is plenty filling. - They really like their foam on the dishes. I do too. - The favorite dishes of the night was the pork belly and raw oysters (prepared with great flavors I have never had with oysters)! I wish we had another night to go back to this restaurant. It's casual enough to go here as a regular night out, and the servers were really friendly and helpful, too. If I'm back in Amsterdam, I will definitely be eating here again. Thank you, lovely British couple. You made it a memorable night in Amsterdam. Tip: Make a reservation. They seem rather busy, even on weeknights.

Yelp
Admittedly, I had high expections, having researched restaurants in Amsterdam on line looking for that special bistro-like experience and local vibe. Clearly Arles is popular based on the steady stream of diners, many of them locals. But the overall experience could have been better. Our bowl of bread appeared to be pieces salvaged from other diners while adjacent tables had portions of a sliced loaf. Unfortunately it made an impression. The ingredients were fresh, the recipes well conceived, and the staff welcoming but overwhelmed.

Yelp
The food is fantastic, the prices are great value, and the service is friendly, but we felt that the restaurant was understaffed, and that killed the vibe in the end. Let me be clear: we loved our meal, and the staff were very kind. However, after completing our meal, with no drinks, no dessert left, we waited more than one hour for our bill. We had to ask three separate times before we received it. Up until that point, the meal had been excellent, but it really put a damper on things at the end of the evening, especially as it was our last night in Amsterdam. Perhaps one more server, or food runner, or, really, anything, and the pace of service would feel more relaxed and less stressed. Still, the food and value are excellent, and the staff are nice, but they might be more attentive if they had more hands on deck.

Yelp
Very mellow not over the top dining even though the food is excellent but a little stiff. The fantastic staff makes up for the twee plating etc. Overall - a nice dinner in the Pijp

Yelp
The best dining experience we had in Amsterdam. It's a small restaurant with about twenty tables, and the layout is lovely, over three levels, with the kitchen on the top level, and a latticed wine grape garden on the bottom. The menu changes daily dependent upon local market purchases. We walked in at 6pm when they opened with a year and a half old baby, and they made space for us. So they mighta had us at "hallo."The prix fixe had several selections, and we chose a seared duck with grilled potatoes and wild vegetables, and a tagliatelle with a lemon, basil, rosemary, and parsley sauce. As appetizers, we had veal tartar with egg yolk on brown bread, and a gazpacho served over buffalo mozzarella and a spicy frozen tomato sorbet. The deserts were simple dishes -rice pudding and french toast- with delicious twists of flavor, along with two espressos. The service was warm and knowledgable. I always love it when the staff can describe a prix fixe menu in detail without having to look at the menu, and recommend several wine or beer pairings for each dish. We never had to ask for warm brown bread & olive oil refills, and you'll want more. And a small eco-practice I found real cool at the end of the meal was giving us leftovers in vacuum-sealed bags over waxed cardboard containers. In closing, if you're looking for a rushed dining experience, this may not be the place for you. A new dish wasn't laid down as soon as the prior dish was cleared, but that isn't the point here. It's obviously about serving well-considered dishes in a setting to make you feel warm comfortable, and happy, and they did it very, very well.
