Where to Find Cheese Fondue in Portland | Eater Portland

"This Milwaukie jazz bar has the feel of a laid back, old-school piano bar, lit with string lights and serenaded by a rotating cast of live performers at the center of the space. Fondue here is simply served as a starter, with baguette and bratwurst, with optional add-ons like pretzels and extra sausage; the actual base is rich and silken without being excessively heavy. For more vehicle options, pair it with an antipasti plate, loaded with fruit, pickled vegetables, cured meats, and cheeses." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Ambiance and decor are good, food is ok. Not bad, subpar "Italian" food for the price, the place isn't cheap.. ordered the calamari, and it was definitely a frozen product, and it didn't match the description that was on the menu. "Lightly beaded rings and tentacles" looked like some frozen onion rings with some fish sticks. It was chewy and hard to swallow. 100% it wasn't "lightly breaded" there and it was 16 bucks. Jazz music is nice, why we went, not for the food.. posted a pic of what I got and posted a pic of what fresh calamari should look like.

This was my first time at Arrivederci Wine and Jazz Restaurant and I was not disappointed. As a matter of fact, this is an excellent and top notch restaurant and wine cellar that I will definitely not only recommend but I will be making this one of my go to place. Everything was exceptional. The food was delicious. The wine was delicious. The atmosphere was lively and very clean. No dust or cobwebs anywhere. The staff were very polite, knowledgeable, helpful, and attentive to the guests. They had live music which is always a bonus. So much fun and completely satisfying. This is definitely a jewel located in Milwaukee, Oregon.

Great character, the food is wonderful. The musicians lay Jazz that next night, Dec 4th - Graham Covington - Ron Steen - Dennis Caiazza, were fabulous. My partner had the Shrimp Scampi and said it was the best she had in a long time. I had the Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, with chicken, and the flavors were sublime. Staff is friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

Google
The low overall score is primarily from my partners and I experience with the owner. At approximately 9:35pm with closing at 10 pm on a Saturday night after we had already paid, and signed our check, and were finishing our last drink, we were approached by the owner who asked us to finish up paying our check so “her children can leave”. We explained that we had already paid, to which she took the completed check and left saying “you guys can stay” in an absolute sarcastic tone. I get that she is looking out for her employees but did she do this to the many other patrons that were in the restaurant as well? Why did she have to be so rude when we had already paid and were finishing the last little bit of our wine? We informed our server about this experience and he said that he had already told her that we paid! So why did she feel it necessary to push us out? It sucks because we had genuinely had a great experience up until that point. The food was good, our server was amazing and the band that was playing was incredible. It was our first time in to the establishment and we were hoping to return but not so sure after our experience with the owner.

Google
I walked into the sweet sound of live jazz! This place has a lively and warm vibe with jazz themed art on the walls. Busy Saturday, so we made reservations and got seated as soon as we walked in. I tried the antipasti plate and the rustic bruschetta. Both are what you'd expect them to be. They were good! Our service experience was on the slower side. She was a sweet server but we saw her twice, when she took our order, and when she dropped our food off. It was busy, so I understand. I did ask the bartender to help us cash out and he was more than willing. Overall I did have a great experience and I would go back.

Google
Arrivederci was a load of fun. We were drawn there by a performance by a musician that we had enjoyed at a different wine bar. Arrivederci has the added bonus of classic Italian food to go with the wine and the entertainment. Our group (2 couples - it was a great spot to visit with friends) mostly went with tried and true options, ravioli, spaghetti, and the fourth opted for the Molte Bene, chicken sauteed with a huge pile of veggies. The antipasti platter, tiramisu and cheesecake, and a couple of bottles of wine made for a great evening. Our server was attentive without hovering - a perfect combination in my opinion. It's a big space, but split into separate rooms, and lit dimly enough to make the whole thing seem cozy. They had posters scattered around showing upcoming music, many of them with artists that I've enjoyed in other settings. I'm looking forward to returning to this particular performance venue.

Google
WONDERFUL! Best Italian in the greater Portland area. Service was quick, every bite was delicious, and live jazz music was a plus! Highly recommend the fried burrata and asking for fresh bread - it comes out hot with butter and olive oil with balsamic, yum! We sat at a table with a window to the bar which was unique. Lots of fun decor to look at in the restaurant!

Google
Great place to too Eat as WE just got engaged 💍 🙂. Staff was pleasant. .... No one really checked on Us or filled waters, as I set it down empty glass on the edge of the table. Would have been nice.! They just dropped food and check🫢! ALL and All, it was a great experience , and food is absolutely wonderful.. Jazz Piano and several singers Wow!

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. A real gem. Great food and service, nice wine list without being overwhelming. Also very reasonably priced

Yelp
The food is mouth watering! Authentic Italian cuisine. Excellent service. Live music was wonderful! Terrific wine selection too.

Yelp
Chicken Alfredo is my favorite, so I've enjoyed it at numerous restaurants in my 64 years, but this one was the best! It was so creamy, so full of tasty garlic, that I had a hard time chatting with my dinner companion, because I wanted to close my eyes to groan over every exquisite bite! I'll be back soon!

Yelp
This little Italian spot has been on our radar for awhile and we finally got a chance to spot in and try it. Parking is a little challenging if you go during a busy hour but we found a spot nearby. We didn't realize they regularly have live jazz musicians playing. You'll want to check the time and night that you plan to stop in because there could be an $8 cover charge due to the musicians playing. We were sat towards the back of the restaurant but could hear the music clearly throughout. We chose an appetizer plate with fondue. It's served with sausage, breads and we added a soft pretzel to it. Very good! We enjoyed the entire plate. We then chose a black and blue pizza and pasta with chicken and Alfredo plates. The pizza was really great with large toppings. The pasta was good and very rich. Everything was served hot and tasted very fresh. Good food and great atmosphere.

Yelp
A great variety of of food on the menu, quick & professional service, and a nice atmosphere, maybe a little noisier than I'd prefer, but the rest of the party didn't seem to mind. Very personable staff.

Yelp
We loved Arrivederci restaurant. Great food, atmosphere and service. This establishment was our "go to" place for all our special occasions. My wife and I have celebrated our past 15+ birthdays here and both our retirement dinners. Probably eaten here at least 50, if not more times. Last night Friday July 11th we went to Arrivederci's to celebrate my 62nd birthday. My wife made reservations over a week ago for a party of two, booth seating at 6:00PM. We arrived five minutes early. Hostess goes to seat us at a small table at the end of the bar that heads down the hallway to the restrooms. Not keen with this seating option we express our disappointment on not getting a booth as requested. Her response, "we reserve booths for larger parties". We don't quite understand since the last 50+ times we have had zero issues with our reservation seating requests. At this point I'm getting irritated. We asked if we could at least get a different table in the bar area. She says, "I'll have to ask". She comes back and states we can sit at a different table in the bar. We sit and she gives us our menus. Next thing out of her mouth is, "this table is booked for reservations at 8:00PM". So in other words eat and leave. At this point, we're livid. We choose to walk out. So no 16th consecutive/62nd birthday dinner for me at my favorite restaurant. All I could think of was the old Seinfeld car rental episode. We can take a reservation, but we can't hold the reservation. There was no way I was going to give this establishment a poor review since it is such a great restaurant. Sadly we are moving forward to find our new "go to" place for special occasions. Arrivederci means good bye or until we see each other again. Thanks for all the great meals, but that experience last night was a big "$@&% you" to us.

Yelp
Everything was on point! The food was delicious and fresh! Service was great! Love the live music!

Yelp
Awesome food, atmosphere, service was spot on. Great jazz band with engaging crowd just like an old time place.

Yelp
Wonderful and amazing food, such a wonderful selection. They have a terrific selection of wines. The service is wonderful, courteous and most helpful. Such a great ambiance, amazing live Jazz entertainment/music.

Yelp
What a hoot! We couldn't figure out if we were in a ski lodge, tiki bar or an Italian villa. This night was hopping with a crowd of enthusiastic music loving pasta eaters! Everything about this place just screams fun! Case our bartender had the biggest smile on his face and all the locals were so fun. The crowd and food made Arrivederci made us not want to say arrive der hi to anyone. Great band tonight with lots to dance to. Lots of 70's deep cut songs to listen to. Our margarita pizza was thin crusted and spiced just perfectly. We split a very fresh Caesar salad and imbibed in a French 75. All just excellent. Will bring a crowd next time there is a karaoke night on Tuesdays. We hear the local talent is amazing.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Our waitress was so sweet and very attentive. I enjoyed the live music while sipping my old fashioned. Most definitely will be going back again!

Yelp
Mouth watering Calamari that made my tastebuds burst. Definitely swallow worthy! It arrived steaming, ready to be eaten. Don't let the crispy tip fool you! Inside is juicy and tender, just the way I like it.

Yelp
Amazing jazz performance. We ordered pizza which was pretty good. The service was on point. If you just come in here for the live jazz music you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This place is a bit quirky, but super cool!! Live music, friendly staff and really great food! The Cobb salad was so refreshing and the Asiago ravioli to die for! Can't wait to go back!

Cindi R.

Yelp
Such an excellent restaurant- in every way. It's deceivingly large inside - much bigger than it looks from the street - and has plenty of room for diners and music lovers alike. The focus is on delectable pasta, pizzas and a large selection of appetizers and salads, along with a very impressive wine list. Shane in the dining room offers smiling and welcoming table service while delivering fabulous dinners from Lorin in the kitchen. This is a "don't miss" dinner spot!

Sydney B.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the staff and fellow diners are friendly. It was a nice vibe. I wish I had asked for a seat near the band. But it was a good time.

Yelp
I came here for the first time with my partner & my dad! My dad was visiting from LA & he's very particular when we eat Italian food. With that being said, the food was very delicious & I'll be more descriptive later, but the reasoning for the 4 stars was the wait & service. We were seated for 20 minutes & had to get up to get our waitress to come over & order everything. The wine, salad & burrata came pretty quickly, but our dinner took about 15 minutes to get to us after we finished the salads. We finally got our food & waited another 20 minutes for our waitress. Even though she was next to us talking to a large group, she never checked on us while checking on them numerous times. We had to get up again & ask for our check. We spent an hour & 20 minutes at this place which was super disappointing when we spent maybe 25 minutes eating. We are totally understanding if you are short staffed & busy, but it was very disappointing to look over at our waitress talking it up with the people next to us & rarely ever checking on us. As for the food, it was really delicious! Only thing is I wish there was some sort of creamy sauce with the shrimp scampi pasta. It was a little boring, but still yummy! The Caesar was super creamy, crisp & flavorful. I wish the burrata came with more than one, but it was fried perfectly. The Asiago ravioli & sausage were perfect & so was the gnocchi!

Yelp
The piano bar on Tuesday night is awesome. Pizza is good too. The Caesar and calamari were good also. Check it out.

Yelp
Very nice Italian restaurant. We reserved the rear area for a family gathering of 20. Ordered appetizers ahead of time to be ready when people arrived. Service was great, especially for group this size who wanted several separate checks. Food, as usual, was delicious.

Yelp
This has been a favorite spot for my husband and I for years. We are such regulars that the owners make us feel like family and we have made friends with many of the regulars. Food is fantastic, music is always fun, the ambiance is lovely. I wish they stayed open later like the days before COVID but we understand why it's hard to go back to late hours. Arrevederci will always be one at the top of our list

Marsha S.

Yelp
Wow, my first visit to Arrivederci and I will definitely be back for more! I came to listen to Haute Jazz Mess and they were fabulous, just the kind of jazz I love. The food was also wonderful, I had the bacon wrapped figs for an appetizer and the shrimp gnocchi for an entree. Service was delightful. Great room for listening to music, can't wait to try it again!

Yelp
Great place, excellent food, huge bar. Band was great, make sure you get reservations. They get very busy.

Yelp
I was looking around for somewhere to go for a date night. Stumbled upon this place and had memories of some great date nights at the now defunct Jimmy Mac's when we met in 2006. This place looked intriguing. So glad we gave it a shot. Everything you used to get in the days of Jimmy Mac's and Jazz de Opus but with better food and not having to deal with downtown Portland (although in the 90's it was safe and fun). This place is not at all pretentious, sits right on McLoughlin (99E) just a few minutes off 205, and the crowd looks to come from all walks of life. Great wine list at very reasonable prices (bottle of Ken Wright on the menu for $65, which is less than I often paid as a club member). Food was fantastic--gnocchi with vodka sauce and I had the Sicilian spaghetti and substituted angel hair pasta. Live music was awesome. Definitely loud if you want to sit in the middle of it, but restaurant seating is just far enough back to enjoy the music and not have to yell at each other for conversation. People were up and dancing and there was just a sense of joy in celebrating live music that I haven't experienced in years. If you just want music and drinks, they charge a whopping cover of $8.00. I think my kid's last Boba Tea cost more than that. We both agreed we found a new regular haunt. Highly recommend it. Just make sure you show up hungry.

Lp P.

Yelp
Only go here if you are a man, or over 60, or both. A man twice my age made unwanted physical advances on me without consent, and when I reported it to the owner's wife tried to gaslight me 'I don't know what happened, I wasn't there', and blame me for not dissuading him. 'Maybe next time you should tell him you don't like that.' Me: 'I think consent means you have to get permission first before touching, and he didn't ask.' They are not removing this man from the establishment and didn't even talk to him about it. Stay away for your safety!! It's too bad because the piano bar event was really fun, I'm bummed I can't go back again for safety reasons.

Big L.

Yelp
Most dishes very good, great spot for live music, very friendly staff. I don't live in the neighborhood, but a very friendly neighborhood-type feel. Parking can be a nightmare!

Yelp
Quaint spot full of locals. Raviolis were awesome. Service was friendly, a little slow but with the great entertainment it worked out nicely.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Arrivederci! Shane is THE BEST bartender! The food is great! Love seeing the same people and even new ones are friendly! Run...don't walk...And enjoy the music

Steve G.

Yelp
Cool neighborhood joint with great pizza but "I'm sorry but I'm not going to eat that" pasta The scampi was a large pile of unsauced noodles with some dry frozen shrimp on top and two tiny flakes of parmesan I managed two bites Music was fab

Yelp
A little hidden gem! I have been coming for years and never once had a negative experience. Engaging bartenders, professional and pleasant waitstaff, tasty food (I love their fondue, mushroom soup and pasta carbonara) and the live music is just the cherry on top. The owners are welcoming and it's very sweet to see them interacting with everyone.

Gina O.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the live music is always great! Every drink and food dish I have had have all Been excellent. Service can be a struggle sometimes, having to ask for drink refills, and wave people down to order. It seems to be one particular waitress though. On my birthday I added that to the reservation and it was not even acknowledged. They also continued to bring food out when our table was filled with dirty plates and acted each time as if we should move them???? The restaurant was only half full so I hope the service would improve and then this place would be a true 5 star all around. It would be great to make a reservation online as well since hours to call the location are so limited.

Yelp
Love the food. And the service is amazing. Everyone is so nice and pleasant. The atmosphere and live performances are always crowd pleasers. A great place to enjoy a date night.

Yelp
The food and service are excellent. The owners are so great and fun to talk to. Rihanna is an awesome server too! Live music is a definite plus!!!

Yelp
This is always such a great place to go for good food and good music...and good service! We came for our anniversary and the band played our wedding song, it was so special!! The food is always delicious and the tiramisu is amazing!
google avatar

Harry F.

Yelp
You will start doubting all the good reviews you've read when you find the place and try to park amongst the auto shops and travel agencies. But fear not, it's in a weird location but well worth it. The live music is fun but not overpowering. We were able to carry on a perfectly normal conversation. The menu is small but the food is decent. Our server was friendly and we had no complaints. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Food very very good, service was as it should be and the ambiance was light and fun. The wine we had was especially good and the antipasto was generous.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful place, the vibe, the food, the service! My husband and I, not being from the area, we were so happy to have stumbled across this gem on yelp! Do yourself a favor, eat here!

Yelp
Loved it!! Good food with a good vibe. Wife had shrimp in Dijon sauce and I had braised beef over risotto. A hidden gem in Gladstone

Yelp
Simply fantastic. Great food, great service. Live music most days. Really fun place. Excellent cocktails too.

Yelp
Came here at 510 - they open at 5 Figured we would get here right when they open since you cannot make reservations online and you have to call and leave a voicemail to try and get a reservation. Walked in and there wasn't one single customer in the restaurant. Told me there were no available tables indoors How do you not at least leave a table or two for walk ins, especially when you can only reserve a table by phone call when they're open? Won't be attempting to come here again
google avatar

Brandi S.

Yelp
Came here for the first time last night and definitely did NOT disappoint. Great service, fantastic food, delicious wine and fun atmosphere. Everything you hope for for date night! We'll definitely be back again soon!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Arrivederci is amazing! The piano bar on Tuesdays is incredible. Always accommodating and really friendly! The food, drinks and menu choices are exceptional! What a surprise to discover this place. Top notch performances on the weekends. Highly recommend and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Wow!!!! Who knew. Great Jazz in Milwaukie. This place is in a strip mall with no parking. You would think it would be a third class place with a washed up jazz singer. So far from the truth!!! Great music, great service and great food!!! We were here on a Friday night and the band was awesome! And such a great time. So affordable too, a bottle of wine and dinner with appetizer was 80$ It's a way out there but we will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE live music? This review is for the MUSIC VENUE ARRIVADERCI not the restaurant. Talent on display is Portland A LIST. SOUND QUALITY A CLASS. SMALL Place. You are up close and personal with the artists. Comfortable and tidy well run safe venue down old highway 99 in Milwaukie I believe. Really enjoyed our evening at this music venue and the jazz combo with two lady singers.

Mr.Chow S.

Yelp
Hidden Fees!!!!! Got my bill. They charged me $8 cover charge. AND, 20% gratuity!!!!!
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
This was a place on our side of town that we had tried going to before, but there was no music that day. That was truly a fluke because every single day, they have live music. Go to their website to check out who is playing. Music is from 7-9, and they take a quick break to eat about halfway thru. If you come at 7, make a reservation. Second, leave plenty of time to park. The parking spots are slim and hard to find. We had to park quite a bit away from the establishment. Expect the place to be hoppin'! Since we reserved our table it was no bother though, they were expecting us. Grab a beer or glass of wine, or in my case a sweet strawberry muddled mocktail- only four bucks! I ordered two. The food was amazing and gourmet! I had a gnocchi in spicy sausage red sauce ($25) and I feel like I was biting the soft pillows that parted when St Peter presided over the pearly gates of heaven!! So much to be excited about! The music is assembled right in the center of the front room, the cover charge is included in your bill, but be a good person and leave at least five bucks to tip the musicians. We ordered tiramisu which I have had countless times before- this was the classic version and also the best. ($10). Keep in mind you can easily split a pizza and have a drink each and it would be much less than what we ordered. But when all was said and done our bill came to $47 EACH, and worth every dime. We will DEFinitely be coming back. It was a lot of fun to see a Pink Martini member live!!!

Yelp
You wouldn't know it from the outside...... this place is quite quaint. The decor is very eclectic, the menu is mouth watering, the beet salad was a little over dressed but flavor was good. I wish they offered more local wines by the glass. Loved the jazz band but wished they had a small area to dance it is quite romantic and we found ourselves wishing we could take a little spin on the dance floor. All of that said the staff was super attentive and took the time and care to make sure we were happy! Solid 4 stars!

Yelp
OK Arrivederci, now that you have your makeup on, let's work on the part of you that matters; your heart and soul. (i.e. food/drink and service) Most everyone can agree that Arrivederci's ambiance is charming, intimate and interesting. I particularly like the view of the Dolphin Strip Club across the street. It is stark reminder that you are in fact in gritty, strip-mall suburbia. Our party of about 12 was there for a birthday party, so of course we had a reservation. Naturally, you would think that the restaurant would be prepared for us and for the usual business that comes with a Saturday night. NOPE. They ran out of meat sauce so certain menu items were not available. They ran out of ingredients for one of their most popular cocktails. Some of us waited 45 minutes just for just an appetizer and then FOREVER for the entrée. The food once it arrived, was OK. I would just like to mention that if I ask for no onion and bell peppers in my entrée don't you think it would follow that I would want to have no onion and peppers in my salad? Just sayin'... Our table was right in front of the house band. Every once in a while, they would play something beautiful and instrumental and the owner who plays the sax would join in and that was pretty cool. Let's just add insult to injury. After excruciatingly slow service, running out of menu items, let's just tack on $5.00 cover charge per person to the bill. According to the website, the cover starts at 7:30 PM. Our reservation was at 6:30 PM. LAME. Aptly named: Arrivederci.

Yelp
Excellent food, very nice people, amazing facility and we Loved the food! And don't get me started on the wine selection and cocktails, wow. Go. Here.
