Arriviste Coffee Bar - Review - Shadyside - Pittsburgh - The Infatuation

"If you need coffee before you can string words together in the morning, or it’s the middle of the afternoon and you’re looking for some caffeine and a snack, stop in at Arriviste on Ellsworth Avenue. Although the cafe is small and looks like the “cool floor” of a college library, it’s a comfortable place to pick up coffee or sit for a while with a laptop. The staff discusses blends like a parent talks about their children and will recommend something new to try, even if your go-to order is usually “hot coffee, please.”" - Madeline Quigley

Google
Place is okay. For my needs it fell short. I want a cup of coffee to enjoy while the ambience adds to it and develops culture. This place is more or less just scenic. The coffee lacked some of the character that can make a place memorable. It seemed as though it was a place to study with an entry fee of a cup of coffee. Place was reletively new when I visited. Could use some culture or element of draw. Great place to study and thats about it.

Google
Beautiful and thoughtful interior with delicious classic and speciality coffee and tea offerings. Lovely soundtrack/mood (jazz funk the day we visited). We ordered “The Thrilla from Manila” (espresso, milk, ube-coconut milk sauce) and an Ethiopian pour over. $12/ 2 people

Google
Cozy little place to get some nice treats to drink and eat. The ube latte alone was amazing and will have me coming back for just that alone. Their liquidamber honey: honduras was nice and has a strong taste. It was very fruity and a bit acidic but still tasty. The cafe mocha was also good. They also offer bakery items such as cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, rugelach, and ice cream sandwiches. The prices are about average for cafes in the area. Staff were nice and the cafe was clean and cozy. They accept cash and card but they don't accept larger than $20 bills. There is no parking lot but there is paid street parking.

Google
Incredible little gem of a shop. Not only are their specialty drinks fantastic- but they roast their beans in house!!! So cool since they are such a small shop. Their drinks are inspired by Filipino flavors which creates such awesome and unique products. The staff and management are wonderfully kind and welcoming to ALL. This shop is a celebration of diversity and exciting flavors that you don’t want to miss out on. (PS. Try the Pandan latte!!)

Google
This is solidly in the category of hip coffee shops. The space is large, bright, clean, modern, and somewhat minimalist. We reached about 20 minutes before the closing time, so the cafe was almost empty. my friend opted for the affogato and I got the special latte with honey. Both were pretty great. We sat down with a drinks on a very comfortable sofa, which is rare for cafes around Pittsburgh. My only complaint would be the use of plastic coffee mug for my latte even for dine-in experiences. My friend did get a ceramic mug for her coffee, though. By the time we got a coffee, the barista had already started cleaning up and preparing to close the cafe, so we couldn’t enjoy much time in the cafe, and I will need to comeback. Not giving it five stars because there was nothing which stood out for me either in terms of the coffee itself or the ambience.

Google
A cute cafe with nice interior! Not a lot of seatings though, and there is NOT any outlets available for digital devices… So if you are planning to come here to work, make sure you don’t come at a busy time (again, the space is limited) and with your laptop sufficiently charged! In terms of beverage, I ordered their latte with ube coconut milk! It’s AMAZING! Overall, I would come back here again for the drinks, but probably not back here to work for long hours. A great cafe, not the best work cafe though.

Google
Awesome experience. This is a spot I've been wanting to try for a long time due to their ube featured drinks. Definitely did not disappoint.

Google
I love the atmosphere, quality drinks, and kind people at Arriveste. The baristas are so knowledgeable about the drinks and are happy to answer questions. I really enjoy the ever-changing local artwork and the music. Nice seating and I always feel comfortable bringing a book and hanging out.

Yelp
Located off Ellsworth Ave is this hip local coffee shop. Been going since day one of their opening. I love their rotating coffee menus and local pastries. Very art oriented and jazz influenced style brings me in and other customers has well. The employees are the bees knees.

Yelp
Their espresso is quite acidic and it comes through the lattes. I think this throws off a lot of the balance Green card holder- yay for charities. Pandan flavor was very slight. I wouldnt order again Ube latte- strong ube flavor! A good one

Yelp
We used the paid street parking and I'm not sure how much more was available but it seemed ok and was not expensive. The place was small but made good use of what they had available. The plants were tickling my head while sitting against the wall but they looked nice. Ok, all that aside, the coffee was really good. I bought two different kinds and enjoyed them both with my son. The presentation was great and I like having small carafes to pour the amount I wanted and sample each. They were pricey but I don't mind paying for good coffee. My only complaint was with who I perceived to be the owner in his brusk interaction while deciding what he recommended from the menu. I don't need to air it all out but I chose his shop, drove over an hour to get there with my son while we were headed to an appointment, and would have appreciated some warmth. When you're the only person in a small space, the way you speak with people matters even more. Recommend. (for to go)

Yelp
A couple of friends and I stopped by around 2:30pm on Monday. The inside was pretty empty except for three other patrons and a staff member, which is good because they don't have a ton of seating. We all got drinks and my friends got Leona's ice cream sandwiches. My ube latte was excellent and I would absolutely get it again. My only critique is that the music playing wasn't my favorite but it wasn't a big deal.

Yelp
Arriviste was a nice neighborhood coffee shop. The service was good and the coffee selection was abundant. They had pastries as well with a few vegan options. Arriviste had a small independent book/publication section near the front of the shop. We bought two interesting publications on the way out.

Yelp
I had a really disappointing experience at this location. The worker on duty was extremely rude, not just to us but to other customers as well. From the moment we walked in, she gave us dirty looks and had a very negative attitude. She seemed annoyed to be there and made no effort to be polite or helpful. Any time we asked a question, she responded in a very dismissive and almost hostile tone. Her whole demeanor was unprofessional and unwelcoming, which made the entire visit uncomfortable. It honestly felt like we were bothering her just by being there. I don't usually leave reviews like this, but the behavior was so unnecessarily rude that I felt it needed to be mentioned. I hope management takes this seriously because no customer should be treated like that.

Yelp
Awesome experience here! This is a spot I've wanted to try for a long time due to their ube drinks. Definitely did not disappoint!

Landon A.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, extremely rude. Sat down and couldn't have a second to myself without this guy saying I needed to leave since I had finished my coffee. Do not come here if you want good service. Manager guy was a jerk.

Yelp
Cute, contemporary and coffee, Arriviste has perfected all three! Delicious coffee shop in Shadyside. Tried the Vanilla Iced Latte and it was 10/10- tastes just like vanilla bean ice cream! Coffee bar serving high-end beans brewed by speciality machines. They also offer teas and pastries. Great spot to meet some friends or get some work done!

AJ G.

Yelp
Absolutely abysmal and a pathetic coffee shop. The service was downright hostile--after placing our order, the owner marched over just to scold us for sharing a drink, as if that's some sort of crime (my partner can't even have caffeine). The whole place reeks of insecurity, from the tasteless, wannabe-hipster vinyl decor to the petty policing of customers. Miserable vibe, miserable staff. Embarrassing excuse for a coffee shop. Do better--or just don't bother.
google avatar

Yelp
To know If a coffee shop can make good coffee, I always order a basic latte. Arriviste can definitely make good coffee! This latte didn't taste super bitter (which I prefer), but still had that delicious coffee taste coming through. I want to come back and try some specialty coffees next time!

Yelp
I LOVE this quaint little coffee shop...it's quiet, spacious, & comfortable. I had a delicious iced coffee with honey & an amazing chocolate chip cookie. I really enjoyed the flexibility & hospitality from the barista Cassy; so I accidentally forgot to say I wanted an ice coffee & she did a remake of my drink. Also, when I suddenly was freezing and she closed the door and postponed getting some fresh Spring air. If that isn't remarkable service I'm not sure what is! This is my new favorite space! Please stop in when you're in the area. Kudos!

Yelp
I like this spot! The people are very nice and I enjoyed the Japanese flash-brewed coffee. The only thing is there aren't many seats so you may luck out with finding a place to sit. Other than that, enjoyed my time here!
google avatar

Yelp
This is everything a coffee shop should be. Mellow, cozy atmosphere. Small drink menu but executed perfectly. Good tunes. Gnomes. This is a 10 out of 10 for me (or in this case 5 star out of 5 star).
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
The coffee shop itself is nice! I love that it has art that appeals to many different consumers. The coffee shop is a bit on the smaller side but was nice and quiet for those who are working outside of the office. I was not a fan of the service nor my drink. I ordered a matcha latte and requested lavender syrup in it. The barista told me they have the most premium matcha and they do not add syrups to their matcha. He informed me that if I wanted to add sugar to it I could after it was made. That response really threw me off. In the food industry, I'd argue that the customer is always right. As an adult I know what I like and don't like, they are my taste buds. My mistake was that I obliged. The matcha was not good and I would have thoroughly enjoyed it if there was lavender syrup in it as I originally requested.

Yelp
I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our morning coffees. Every Sunday we try to hit up a local coffee shop and on this day it happened to be Arriviste Coffee Roasters. This was actually the second time that we had been here as I had forgotten to write a review the first time. This store is located right on Ellsworth Avenue and is decent sized inside. It has a couple of tables as well as some lounge seating, all well spaced, and it was quiet the morning that I was there. Then near the front they have a shelf full of merchandise that you can buy like coffee and some hats. For my coffee on this morning I went with a con miel while my wife went with an americano. What I like about Arriviste is that you can tell that they are serious about their coffee as they weigh each and every puck before they make the espresso. We also ended up ordering a breakfast burrito which takes 10 minutes to make. So after that was done baking, I had my coffees and was out the door. My cafe con miel was described as espresso + steamed milk + spices local Bedillion honey. My first sip of it ended up being quite good with the espresso and milk in nice ratios at the beginning before getting a spiced sweetness on the finish. My wife thought her americano was good. Last was the breakfast burrito which consisted of egg, beans, cheese and potato. With the cooking time it was nice and crispy on the outside and I enjoyed everything inside except for the potato. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I really enjoyed my coffee here and thought my wife's was quite good too.

Yelp
I had a pretty disappointing experience here. Got their specialty drink Thrilla the manila and a Matcha Latte. The manilla drink was way too sweet. The matcha latte taste like sweetened milk. On top of that, I thought the baristas here were not inviting at all / borderline rude.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfectly made Cappuccino. Barista greeted us and made us feel welcome. Space is very cosy and comfortable to either work in or enjoy a coffee.
google avatar

Amber J.

Yelp
What a great shop to visit. The atmosphere was quiet and serene. The service was great. Caddy was gracious and very help. I enjoyed my coffee and cookie. Be sure to visit if you are in the area.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
Arriviste has some of our favorite specialty coffee drinks in Pittsburgh! If you like unique flavors beyond just a basic latte, you'll definitely want to check them out. It is a very small space though, so we take our drinks to go because there's never anywhere to sit.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
There's a careful attention to detail when anyone makes a coffee drink. Every drink I've had has been rich and well made; never too acidic nor bitter. I also love the art posted around the shop. I recommend meeting a friend there or reading on their comfortable couch.
google avatar

Yelp
I really want to love this coffee shop because I love supporting small businesses but I don't recommend it. I've been there about a dozen times over the past several months. I'm just amazed at how (at best) the servers are indifferent and (worse) outright aloof and seemingly not helpful on purpose. The coffee is very good of course but the experience leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe this is being unusually picky but they won't/can't do anything that requires effort - they offer breakfast sandwiches and I asked if the cheese can be removed before warming it. No we can't touch the sandwich. How about a muffin - can you warm it? No we can't because it would require removing the paper liner or it would catch fire and if we do that the muffin might fall apart blah blah blah. And then the WiFi password is something ridiculous like 15 letters that have meaning to someone but not obvious so I had to take pic on my phone or take my device to where it's shown to type in the password. The space is cozy enough and in a good location which is why I've been coming back. But each time I'm like meh to ugh. Sorry but I'll actively avoid this place.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Nice location. Nothing very uniquely interesting about it, but worth your visit.
google avatar

Terry B.

Yelp
At one point this place was good, but lately the quality of service and coffee has deteriorated. The baristas were not very friendly, and give off a big pretentious vibe when I asked for a flavor in my latte. The latte was not good and was poorly prepared - very bubbly and not creamy/microfoamy. One of them in particular seemed visibly annoyed to have customers at all. Maybe they were just having a bad day...
google avatar

Nate T.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh, bar none. The staff is wonderful and the shop design is clean and comfortable. The specialty drinks are good enough to get me trying something that isn't just a black coffee or a breve too (looking at you Thrilla from Manilla...) They roast in-house too, on an all-electric roaster. I cross a bridge and go through a tunnel for these beans, especially for a recent run of an Ethiopian. What's more, roasting on their electric system saves an immense amount of CO2 emissions over natural gas roasting, so it's tasty and sustainable. Finally - if the above reasons weren't enough, they donate proceeds from various drinks monthly to important regional charities.

Yelp
I was walking through the neighborhood and needed a boost of energy. I stopped in for a latte. Living the vibe and atmosphere. Cute coffee shop! The customer service was fantastic. The barista was very friendly and kind. The latte tasted great! Thank you for the positive experience.

Helena E.

Yelp
Amazing coffee- incredibly bad customer service. Not all the employees are like this, just one man who I think was mentioned in other reviews. Ruined my experience.
google avatar

Bessie T.

Yelp
Excellent coffee. We had dropped coffee "cup of joe". They add the cream for you (see foreground). Muffin is heated. The coffee is excellent and rivals any good coffee spot in SF Bay Area. Looks like a great place to talk and work! Will definitely come back when I'm in Pittsburgh.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
A hidden gem (at least to me). I live right down the road, and I never knew it was here until a friend recommended we stop in a few days ago. The drinks were great, and pastries were delicious. Arriviste also had a great atmosphere-- it was cozy and relaxed, and it genuinely seemed like a great place to hang out and work for a while. We sat on the sofa and caught up for a long time. It was really lovely.
google avatar

Carlie H.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop vibe. If I didn't have to study all the time, I'd love to go here and catch up with some friends on a Sunday morning. The iced spiced honey latte was delicious. Seating limited to 3 small tables with two seats each, a communal table for ~10, a couch and 2 lounge chairs. I only saw one available outlet, so you'll have to share. Free WiFi available.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
This place single-handedly revived my belief in delicious coffee. After what feels like hundreds of 8oz frothy cortados with unbalanced espresso I was starting to think good coffee was a myth. A perfectly balanced cortado awaited me at this location and reminded me that coffee could be great.
google avatar

Yoonji S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and awesome coffee not to mention. But one more thing-Handpie! This savory handpie was so delicious.
google avatar

Anokhy D.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years and was so glad to see they reopened (safely!) during this covid summer. Their coffee selection is always great. And their cold brew hits the spot on hot mornings. (Shoutout to 350° bakery for the baked goods!) Whether you want a quick cup of Joe or a carefully done pourover, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Stopped in to get some coffee and study with some friends and I really loved the place. That barista was super helpful and friendly and the macchiato I got was perfect. Not a ton of seating inside but a really great vibe. Drinks are also pretty reasonably priced for the quality. Definitely check it out if you are in Shadyside!
google avatar

Hima V.

Yelp
This place falls short of my expectations. I wanted to check out this spot for a very long time and finally made it on a Sunday afternoon. The cafe was empty when I walked in. I liked the decor and the interiors. Our barista was very polite and did inform us that they were out of all baked goods and treats by the time we got there. Although, that was slightly disappointing, I went ahead and ordered a mocha and my cousin who accompanied me got a cappuccino. Mocha barely tasted like one on the first sip. Their description of dark chocolate ganache in a mocha on the website seemed pretty interesting, however, the actual beverage fell short. As a matter of fact, I had to add sugar to make it taste a little like mocha. My cousin mentioned that his cappuccino hardly tasted like one and was more like a macchiato. This might seem funny to whoever is reading this, but I'm not going here again. The ambiance and service is good, but that alone doesn't suffice!

Yelp
Thank you Arriviste Coffee Bar for actually having free WiFi!!! Feeling spoiled as it's everywhere in California but a rare find in my hometown. Super Industrial design and cleanliness, barista is a kind and articulate bearded guy. Cool chill music at a chill volume level. I appreciate that it's unfamiliar and modern, has a new sound to it Connan Mockasin. Funky. Great smelling coffee, some bars, well done pastries and I'm having a Savory 'Pierogi' turn over.
google avatar

Allie O.

Yelp
Arriviste is and has always been my favorite coffee shop in the city of Pittsburgh! As someone who came over from Southern California (a place with in my opinion some of the best third wave coffee shops) and a former barista of 5 years the flavors and the care put into every cup of coffee from this shop is appreciated. The team here really knows how to make coffee properly and educate themselves on how to provide the most delicious cup from the beans roasted in the shop to the baristas serving with top notch knowledge. I love yinz thanks for being the best in tahn.

Theo M.

Yelp
I think it's worth mentioning I'm specifically writing this review because that person down there is an entitled ah that thinks it doesn't cost money to run a high quality small business. Do you allow strangers to come into your home and hang out for free? I moved to Pittsburgh recently, and as a coffee nerd, stopping in at Arriviste was absolutely necessary. I haven't stopped coming in since. The bean quality is next level, and I just love stopping in on days they roast (in the shop!) to get the whiff of freshly roasted coffee scent that fills the space. This sounds over the top, but I've had some seriously pivotal cups of coffee here (I'm looking at you natural process gesha.) The baristas are all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and on multiple occasions I've had lengthy conversations about equipment and technique. They've been always willing to help even though I already have my own equipment. I've never felt pressured to buy anything here, but why would they need to pressure any reasonable person? This is clearly the best coffee in Pittsburgh, and I'd gladly put their wares up against other shops in the snobbiest coffee cities in the US.

Gabriel R.

Yelp
Very good, specialty drinks are a must. Limited seating, but very skilled baristas. I got the thrilla in manilla and it was great.
google avatar

Marisa N.

Yelp
Their drinks are delicious and I cannot express how incredible the samosa pies are. My goodness. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and the cafe itself was well kept and welcoming. Went two days in a row while visiting Pittsburgh.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday afternoon and it was not too busy. Arriviste is very well decorated and has a great modern vibe to it. I was a fan of the artwork! I got an americano as they stop drip coffee after 1 pm. I appreciated that they give a little cookie with your drink! There is a big table, a couple small tables and a couch area. I was there for a couple hours doing work and will definitely be back. I appreciated that it was quiet and I was able to get work done. Overall, a wonderful coffee shop on Ellsworth Ave.
google avatar

Dante M.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee shop in Pittsburgh! I came here one morning with a friend and just had their drip coffee (which was a really nice Brazilian coffee that day)! It was fantastic, and the service was super friendly. They have tons of other options on their menu and even offer seasonal specials, so I will be back to try some of their fall specials very soon!

Yelp
I've been sitting in Arriviste this morning (a Monday) working away and enjoying myself to no end! Imagine that! This little coffee shop has really made my day. I walked over, so no insights into the parking situation. I started the day off with an excellent pour over and a piece of quiche. The flavor of the coffee was so layered an wonderful. Definitely recommend for those who enjoy a cup of black coffee. The quiche, my my! Quite yummy and not over baked like most quiche. Really delicate and scrumptious. They also have cheddar broccoli hand pies I'd like to try at some point. Second drink I ordered was a latte of some sort I can't remember at the moment. Had honey and some spices. I'm not usually a latte drinker (wanted to try something different) but this one was nice and balanced. Not too sweet at all! Served with a cute little round of shortbread which was baked to perfection. Couldn't stop there and also ordered a blueberry shortbread square, which was good if you're craving something sweet. The baristas were all so friendly and helpful, ready to offer up a recommendation on what to try. All in all, I'm hoping that everyone enjoys this spot as much as I do. I recommend the pour over alongside a little something to eat. Come in without expectations and see what it is about!

Yelp
Must try the ube-coconut latte. Unique flavor, perfect balance of bittersweetness, funky natural purple color from ube (very instagrammable). Masala chai latte was good as well.

Yelp
My FAVORITE coffee shop in Pittsburgh. It checks all of my coffee shop must-haves. Good coffee? (Passengers, commonplace, Maquina) - CHECK Aesthetic? (These guys are into the details, and it pays off. I love the way that they serve pour overs: a mug + glass coffee pitcher served on a personalized wooden tray. Bonus: equals out to 1.5 mugs of coffee.) - CHECK Good work space? (ample space + WiFi) - CHECK Out of the box experimental drink options for creative days? - CHECK Great space to come with a group? (Several "large group seating options) - CHECK Kind, engaging, helpful staff? - TRIPLE CHECK You are doing yourself a disservice by not stopping by to check out (or return to) this place. I personally stick to pour over coffee, but every once in a while I venture into Cafe Con Miel territory. I am always pleased with the result.

Josh C.

Yelp
This place is the best. Go get a coffee there. Yelp is a terrible company whose business model is to shake businesses down for advertising money with the threat of bad reviews. Fuck Yelp.

J K.

Yelp
Long story short: overpriced mediocre coffee, rude, better affordable coffee one block down on Ellsworth. I've spent 100s of dollars there over several months, buying a $4.50 coffee each day. If you sit down, you have about 1 minute to buy an over priced coffee or they ask you to leave. They blocked off their outlets so you cant work there for very long. I think management changed because this place used to be a nice environment. there are 2 small two person tables and a couch. One morning I came in, bought a coffee, went to lunch, and returned with the same coffee I bought that morning. Within one minute, they asked me "what I want" and I said that I was okay for now because I havent finished my AM coffee yet. The barista laughed at me because of how "ridiculous" I was for thinking I could come back. I tried to give it a chance, but I've switched where I get my AM coffee hit!

Yelp
If you're a bougie searching for affiliation with the next step, you've found no better place than to become an arriviste at the appropriately named cafe. They have a modern layout that's very cleanly decorated with only the best accoutrements: bowers wilkins audio system, artwork from the impressionist and others (or who knows!) and interior designing that makes my IKEA furniture weep. The coffee tasted very good and priced at the typical price range for a hipster coffee shop. This would be a great place to study. When I went it was very quiet, but the seating was somewhat limited. I ended up sitting outside and enjoyed a very sophisticated conversation about the nice weather with good company. Overall, a nice coffee shop to sit and chat outside, perhaps not inside, or just passing by to get coffee and feel like an arriviste.
google avatar

Kathleen M.

Yelp
It's OK. Nice vibe for chilling and having a coffee but the Cappuccino was just OK. The one thing that gets me is they have all the outlets covered, making it inhospitable for those who want to come, enjoy coffee and get some work done. There are better options. Would I come back? Yeah to grab a drink, if I were near by. But that's it really. I was spoiled by Big Dog's Coffee in the South Side Flats last week. That is a great shop!
