"Manhattan’s Little Italy isn’t quite as “Italy” as it once was. For a real NYC-Italian neighborhood experience, the only “Little Italy” left is in the Bronx—Arthur Avenue, to be specific. Or, to be even more specific, try the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, sitting in front of a big, square slice of Cafe al Mercato’s Sicilian-style pizza. Tucked into a corner of the bustling space, the unassuming counter is a crucial part of the Bronx’s oldest sheltered retail market, opened in 1940 by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia (of airport fame) to alleviate congestion from street vendors and encourage higher safety standards in food service. Today, the market is home to an array of stationary vendors selling the best Italian ingredients you can get outside the motherland: quality cuts of osso buco, salted cod, dried hazelnuts, real San Marzano tomatoes, you name it. When your appetite gets to whining, belly up to Cafe al Mercato for a carbo-train to paradise. While the Sicilian-style square slices (the eggplant, in particular) are the standout option here, don’t shy away from the lineup of soups, salads, and sandwiches, either. The thick focaccia sandwich is laden with fried veal, mozzarella, tomato sauce, and a whisper of sautéed spinach. For a patriotic touch, roasted red peppers, broccoli rabe, and mozzarella team up on a sesame roll for the “Italian Flag” sandwich. The tripe soup is hearty, with enough of a peppery kick to keep the funk of the tripe under control. An off-menu double veal parm on garlic bread is a frequent order for those in-the-know. Take your lunch with a beer from the Bronx Beer Hall behind you. Just leave time for a walk after your visit to the historic food hall. You’ll have plenty to burn off. Went to the deli and was offered complimentary wine made by the owner. I loved it so much I bought a bottle. Absolutely love this place! And the Bronx Beer Hall is a vibe!

The market is honestly a memorable experience! There's a flower shop when you walk in and you can see the guys hand making cigars, which is so cool. Then they have a spot to purchase fresh produce and another stand that is dedicated to selling meats of various kinds. Ooouu, how could I forget about all the tasty types of cheeses available as well and there is a stand to purchase treats and gelato as well. Lastly, slap dab in the middle is Bronx Beer Hall, which I heard many good reviews about. This place is worth checking out!

Nice options for Italian classics served up in a small space. Sample the goods at Mike's, have a local beer at Bronx Beer Hall, and try some garlic knots all under one roof. Great Arthur Ave stop!

I grabbed lunch in the little sit down area directly across from the butcher and deli. I had got a sandwich which was really good but a bit dry with a side of pesto macaroni which was really dry. I also ordered mozzarella sticks which are NOT worth it. You only get 4 for 8 dollars, not even cheesy and the breading tasted and felt stale. The servers were amazing though. Not much to scenery but also nothing to really complain about for atmosphere. Just nothing special because it's an open market. Non the less I will continue to come back here. It's still worth it.

I love Arthur Avenue. I love the Italian markets, the breads, pastries, cheeses, meats. The restaurants. It is better than Little Italy in Manhattan and the parking is easier. There are several lots to park in, as well as on the street parking. Prices are inexpensive.

Yelp
You want a quick bite, something simple? You'll find it here. You want pasta without tablecloths? Sure! Just want mozzarella and prosciutto (with a little olive oil and vinegar?

Yelp
Feels like Chelsea market, but a little more gritty and by extension interesting. They sell genuine Italian products, very cool.

Yelp
Omg!!! So this market is filled with deliciousness as you enter u see a spot where they make cigars by hand (pretty cool) then after that all you see is Butchers ready to cut you either fresh meat or cold cuts, their sandwiches are to die for literally filled with taste, you can even chill out on the side and sit down and eat, or stand on a long line (it's worth it) to order and go, but!!!!! While your waiting your getting samples of Prosciutto, freah warm mozz cheese, all kinds of cheese what the person ahead of you is ordering, and as they cut it for them there just giving samples. I think that's awesome. I came in there for Sun dry tomatoes and left with Swiss cheese and prosciutto. Absolutely love this spot!!!

Yelp
Arthur Avenue Market Pasticceria you are most certainly magnificent, I had a wonderful experience here today. Great great atmosphere. Every menu item that we ordered was very fresh and flavorful. All of the staff are really helpful - you truly feel welcome and taken care of. Arthur Avenue Market Pasticceria is bliss.

Yelp
I'd heard a lot about the place and read the newspaper article. Place was ok but nothing more nothing less. Awkward to get to by public transport. From a hygiene perspective leaving different piles of filled rolls on top of the counter all day is a risk as exposed to bacteria and of course anyone could cough or sneeze on it.

Yelp
I stopped by the pasticceria last time I had lunch in the area. It's basically a side stall in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, with a few charis and tables off to the center, next to the cigar makers. The coffee was fresh and flavorful, but the baked goods and cakes were all thoroughly average. If I didn't know better, I'd say they bought everything from Paloumbo's down the street since they don't have any cooking facilities on the premises.

Yelp
So my review isn't for the place but more for the waitress behind the counter. I notice she gave me a new cannoli after the once she was wrapping cracked. Just wanted to thank her and acknowledge the extra care to detail and pride she puts into the place. Also the canolis and cold press coffee was really good.

Yelp
It's so hard not to stop and grab a sweet when I'm at the market. The girls working are super friendly and knowledgable. The French Napoleon was delicious and flaky! I sampled the espresso gelato, and it unfortunately had that freezer burn taste! Still delicious and creamy like gelato, but it'd be much better if it were changed out. Or whatever protocol you go about keeping gelato fresh. There's seating to the right of the Pasticceria, where you can enjoy your sweets and marvel at the skill of the cigar makers.

Yelp
Place is amazing. I usually judge a Italian deli/market based on the Italian combo. Easily top three all time for me . Entire staff was super friendly and outgoing . Especially the chick running the register . They all seemed to really love there job which def makes it easier to go back . They also have hand rolled cigars in the back .
