The 27 Best Restaurants in Nagoya, Japan | Eater

"Asadaya has been hand-cutting noodles since before World War II. An office-worker favorite, the restaurant serves simple dishes like tamago toji udon (udon noodles in egg-drop broth) and wakame kishimen koro (cold kishimen noodles topped with seaweed) that highlight the perfectly chewy noodles. For more assertive flavors, try the rich beef curry on udon, kishimen, or ramen. In any other Japanese city, this type of broth would come delicately flavored with curry, but in Nagoya, curry noodles are essentially submerged in curry gravy. [$]" - Nina Li Coomes

Watch: Breakfast Is a Multi-Course Meal at This Michelin-Starred Restaurant in Japan | Eater

"Owned by 16th-generation proprietor Qta Asada, this nearly 140-year-old five-star ryokan with four guest rooms and a Michelin star embodies the traditional Japanese inn lineage that dates back to the eighth century A.D. Breakfast is treated as the most important meal — an event rather than a simple meal — featuring many fermented items such as soy sauce, miso soup (fermented soybeans), and tsukemono pickles served with rice. While the inn once served all dishes at once, it has evolved to begin with cold dishes before bringing warm items, a service sequence that it did not invent but which the inn considers a defining and special aspect of its breakfast experience." - Eater Video

Asadaya is highly rated but I find the stay underwhelming. The suite is spacious but it is dated, especially the bathroom. The food is good but it is not outstanding. Breakfast (Japanese) was a disappointment. The service is proper but lacks charm. When we requested using the bath after breakfast around 10, we were informed that's not possible (maybe due to the checkout time of 11)? The tatami was not tidied up during breakfast and housekeeping was not as thorough as expected. The ryokan has an amazing history but I feel renewed energy and investment are necessary. It has been overtaken by many other ryokans, some at a fraction of its cost (an example being Ryokan Shinshen in Kyushu or the very traditional Yoshimatsu in Hakone which offers exceptional value in comparison).

There are many reasons to go to Kanazawa, for us it was the Kenroku-en Gardens. And there are many hotels to choose from, but the Ryokan Asadaya seemed special—and it was.||What made it special?||Asadaya is located in walking distance of the Kanazawa Castle Park and the Kenroku-en Gardens as well as other sights. It’s right across from the fabulous and bustling Omi-cho Market, but when one enters the beautiful old building one is immediately transported into an atmosphere that combines warmth and tranquility. The rooms, baths, and appointments are traditional, beautiful, comfortable, and spacious. Meals at Asadaya are memorable in every way. We loved the focus on regional mushrooms, vegetables, fish, and duck prepared with deep culinary understanding and artistry. The presentation of the dishes made one want to know more about the local craftspeople and their wares and traditions.|The skilled people at Ryokan Asadaya pull it all together. The building and staff work together to create a lovely realm that feels timeless and relaxing. ||And one gets to enjoy one the top three gardens in Japan.

Go to Asadaya to learn about the art and skill of hospitality. Be amazed at the very personalized, precisely focused and kind attention. Enjoy the central location in this wonderful city. But our high expectations for the food were not quite realized (maybe the Michelin star caliber days are in the past?) and the unreasonably high prices make it poor value compared to other desirable Ryokans we enjoyed in Japan.

We had the best time here for our 1 year anniversary. They even made it special and gave us a gift at dinner. The people were warm, the rooms were spectacular, some of the best food on the trip! We loved our people here.

Our very gracious hostess and her team made our stay here one of the most exceptional experiences in my life. A truly fantastic and authentic Japanese stay in a peaceful and beautiful ryokan. I highly recommend this hotel. The dinner and breakfast were both of the very highest quality. Thank you.

Ryokan Asadya, which has been hosting guests since the mid 17th century, is a unique place. Not just for the exquisite food and comfortable spacious perfectly proportioned rooms (of which there are only four) but for the graciousness of the hospitality, which they have made into an art form. If you are fortunate enough to get a reservation here, don’t pass up the chance. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

So tranquil and gracious. An escape from all the many tourists flowing through town. Worth the expense for the experience.
