The Best Restaurants in South LA | Eater LA

"One of the most beloved East LA taco spots, Asadero Chikali, which leans on Mexicali-style carne asada, guisados, and more, opened a prime location a few blocks east of Inglewood’s new Intuit Dome in 2024. Founded by José Peréz Jr. and his mother back in 2015, the company worked out of a trailer by 2017. This strip mall location boasts 24 seats, ample parking, and buttery soft flour tortillas to help contain mouthwatering guisados like carne con chile, chicharron con salsa verde, and bistec con papa. Every order comes with up to 10 different kinds of salsa and toppings to customize each taco. Asadero Chikali’s varied, versatile menu should please just about anyone, especially someone keen on finding top-notch tacos in South LA." - Mona Holmes

LA’s New Restaurant Openings

"We’re not morning people, but we’ll get out of bed at any hour for the breakfast tacos at Asadero Chikali. The East LA truck has a new brick-and-mortar in Inglewood, where you’ll find the same excellent Mexicali-style tacos de guisado. Chikali’s chewy flour tortillas are made in-house and filled with shredded braised beef, chicharron stewed in tangy salsa verde, or spicy chorizo with scrambled eggs." - sylvio martins

The premises were clean, and the staff provided excellent service. The food quality was acceptable but unremarkable; specifically, the dish I ordered fell short of comparable offerings in other regions, including Mexico. The tortillas were thinner than I prefer. I may revisit the establishment at a future date.

Google
Counter serve place! The aguas were excellent (Pina and Sandia) and the asado carbon was delicious - also love how many salsas they had ready to go! Would gladly go again!

Google
Came across this place on Tik tok, ended up being really tasty. Pictured is all of the toppings and half my pastor quesa taco (other half I ate) + a vampiro. Everything had excellent flavor and service was fast and quick.

We are super excited about Asadero Chikali opening in Inglewood! It was our first time so we tried their sampler platter and two tacos. Highly recommend the platter, especially as a first timer. Comes with 6 guisados and 5 hand rolled flour tortillas, as well as a full platter of fresh salsas and toppings. The service was very friendly and fast. We’ll be back!

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT PARKING LOT IS USUALLY A ZOO BUT IF YOU CAN FIND PARKING IT MAY BE WELL WORTH THE HASSEL. THE NAME CHIKALI ASADERO ESTILO MEXICALI GUISADOS. TRANSLATED SAUTÉED (GUISADOS) MEXICALI, MEXICO 🇲🇽 FOOD! DELICIOUS FOOD, SERVICE WITH A SMILE! This CARNE ASADA burrito is a match made in FOOD HEAVEN. Start off with a LARGE HOME STYLE FLOUR TORTILLA, GREAT MARINATED CARNE ASADA, FRESH GUACAMOLE, HOMESTYLE MEXICAN RICE, FRESH MEDIUM SPICE SALSA, FRESH CHOPED CILANTRO, PICKLED RED ONIONS, I was NOT able to finish this LARGE $14.00 burrito. I’d venture to say the could clearly be cut to two meals. IF YOUR IN A HURRY LIMITED TIME PARKING IS REALLY BAD.

Have you ever dined at a restaurant and said to yourself “Damn, that tastes like my moms cooking!” Well this is one of those places for me. They make Mexican guisados which are stewy dishes. You can have them in tacos, burritos, or a plate. I went with the chicharron en salsa verde, bistec con papas, and the papa con chorizo tacos. They were all amazing and tasted like home cooking. Serving size is great for the price. Interior is small but there are quite a few tables. They also bring a lot of salsas and toppings to your table if you dine in.

Google
Really friendly staff, bilingual and helpful with menu orders on explaining what everything was. Food was great and fast service I would definitely comeback again for the food. We got the sampler plate and you get alittle of everything. I loved the fact they bring you a plastic tray with 7-10 salsa options for you to try and handmade flour tortillas

Google
I had the asada queso taco, the al pastor queso taco and the asada vampiro. All were excellent, top-tier Mexican spot in Los Angeles. Perfect for right before a Clippers game or Rams game, will be coming here every time I go to a LA Clippers or Rams game.

Yelp
Asadero Chikali is a local gem that has transitioned from a food truck to a cozy restaurant, and it has only gotten better with time. The limited seating adds to the intimate and welcoming vibe, while the great music creates the perfect atmosphere for enjoying a meal. One of the standout features is their salsa tray, offering a variety of sauces that cater to every taste - it's a must-try! The food quality is simply spectacular; each dish is savory, flavorful, and incredibly delicious. Whether you're a local or visiting, every bite feels like a little piece of heaven. The tacos are especially memorable, with fresh ingredients and a perfect balance of flavors. The fresh tortillas are just a great touch. I love coming back time and again, knowing that Asadero Chikali will consistently serve up phenomenal food. It's hands down one of the best spots in town for authentic Mexican eats! Service is quick and simple just be ready to wait if there's a line.

Yelp
Amazing guisados and fresh tortillas in an unassuming strip mall right off Century. We got the guisado sampler - the standout for me was the chicharrones- and a bunch of tacos/vampiros (asada and pastor were both delicious). We got all of the taco "chikali style" which means they come with guacamole and beans. They bring out a whole tray of different salsas toppings for you to add to your meal (cucumbers, chopped cabbage, onions, cilantro, etc). There is a small lot but spots are on the tight side.

Yelp
I've been out to their stand in East LA before, but this was my first visit to their relatively new brick and mortar location in Inglewood. My previous visit, it was earlier in the day and ordered their breakfast sampler, which I really loved! (more guisado like and hearty served with tortillas). On this visit, I was focused on getting some of their tacos. The service was great - the person at the counter was very friendly and helpful and the vibe there was a small hole in the wall type of taqueria. I ended up ordering a carne deshebrada taco (de guisado) and an asada al carbon (chikali style). The tacos were a good size and two were definitely enough even though I probably could have eaten more. I don't know if I came extra hungry, but I devoured these tacos so quickly. So so delicious. The shredded beef was tender and the stewed flavors of tomato, onion, and peppers were wonderful. The asada taco - Chikali style (comes with guacamole and beans) had a great smoky flavor to it and a great contrast to the creamy guac. The tacos are also served on fresh flour tortillas, which imo made the tacos eat like mini burritos. They're generous on the salsas and toppings and if you dine in - you receive a tray to top your food yourself. The parking was tricky. Depending on how busy the strip mall is, parking can be tough and the lot feels a little small. It's off a busy street too. Next time I come here, I am going to check if there are street parking options around the corner where less fast moving traffic goes through.

Yelp
As far as taco chains go, this was okay. Let me count the ways: Location: This one was located in Inglewood on Century Blvd and Myrtle in a tiny strip mall with the tightest parking lot ever. Located on the end of a set of stores Food: I got 3 carnitas tacos that were homemade as their claim to fame as you can see them making it in the kitchen. Meat was a little salty, but good. What sank the rating to 3 stars was the amount of grease at the bottom of each taco as I ate them that was on the plate. I needed loads of napkins for that. They do give you a lot of toppings to chose from (a whole tray) to put on your tacos from limes, salsas, 3 different kinds of sauces, cabbage, marinated red onions and raw onions and cilantro. This was just okay for me. Service: Was quick and efficient I have no complaints there. Summary: This location is different from the others in that there is no condiment bar, but come to you in individual bowls that arrive at your table for you to chose from. There is no outdoor seating, but all inside. This feels cramped and not a lot of room for large parties over 4 and even then, there are only 3-4 those and bumping into your neighbor behind you a distinct possibility. I would try the other locations if you want more space, but if you're just ordering to-go you can try this spot.

Yelp
I saw this restaurant on IG and thought I would come and give them a try since it's near my neighborhood. I enjoyed each bite of my tacos, especially the potato & beans. Both Asada and Birria were flavorful, so next time I will skip the vampiro and get all tacos because the burnt cheese overpowered my Asada. (I usually love this combo) As for the condiments and toppings, I love that they offer a full spread, but I only ordered three tacos and still received everything. While I appreciate the generosity, I feel like it leads to a lot of waste. To help them cut costs and reduce waste, they might consider asking customers which salsas and toppings they prefer instead of automatically providing the full selection. A simple system either a topping bar (space permitting) or a small menu at the counter displaying available options could be helpful. Maybe offering the full spread only for orders of six or more tacos would also be a good balance. horchata: 3/5 Potato and bean tacos: 4/5 Barbacoa: 3.5/5 Vampiro: 3/5 Service was friendly, and I'd definitely come back. One thing I really appreciate is that they have a private parking lot, which is a huge plus. However, I'd recommend avoiding Century Blvd if possible it tends to get congested. Taking an alternate route or using side streets might save you some time. I really want this place to succeed, and I'm wishing them all the best. Definitely check them out and show your support!

Yelp
Amazing Carne Asada tacos, best tortillas in town. Barbacoa and pastor are good too, but don't skip the steak. The Asada Burrito is probably the most bang for your buck - a lot of meat for a reasonable price. Get a Guisado Sampler if you're wanting to try something a bit more hearty. It's worth getting at least the uniquely textured chicharron at least. They say it's the rice that makes the sushi, and here it's the tortilla that makes the taco. An awesome option for tacos, highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious guisados! We ordered a barbacoa quesataco (must have!), guisado sampler, and barbacoa burrito. For the sampler, we ordered carne con papas (2), chicharron, puerco con papas, papas con vegetables, and chorizo con papas. Everything was delicious and so satisfying. Did not take pictures since we were so excited to eat guisados. Service was friendly and helpful. It's a Mom and Pop shop, clean and small. They have sit down area or to-go option. Tables seat four at most. Great option for grabbing something good to eat before a game. It's 5-6 blocks from Sofi stadium. There's a parking lot also. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
FANTASTIC food and service. Stopped in for a quick bite before a concert, was concerned about being late for the concert but the service was mad quick. You walk in, order at the counter, then sit down and they bring you your food. You can get to-go if you want. They bring a tray of assortment goodies to pack with your tacos. I got the sampler which comes with 6 different of their meats. Not sure what goes into which meat they give you but everything on the plate was delicious, especially the pork rinds in green sauce. The salsas are delicious. The beans are also incredible. My partner hates beans and never ever eats beans but ate most of them off the plate! The star of the show are the fresh flour tortillas cooked to order. Small but delicious and hot! The place is very clean. Only four tables and they had two tvs going. One with a soccer game and one with music. Highly recommend coming here. Incredible food.

Yelp
Loved It! Went with 3 friends, they also got asada burritos not pictured. Everyone loved their food, meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly. We really enjoyed being served the condiment tray. There were 3 workers, all super sweet and obviously cared for us. Played nice music, there was a tv and a restroom. Would recommend to anyone. My only complaint is that I LOVE corn tortillas but their flour tortillas are homemade and taste great!

Yelp
Wow, just wow. A craving for tacos brought us to Asadero Chikali to try Juarez-Style comida that was absolutely delicious. Everything ordered was devoured. The staff were super friendly and patient as they went over the different guisados on the menu. The meats were beyond flavorful. The mesquite smoke shined in the carne asada and the Al pastor was vibrant and savory with its marinate. The assorted salsa bar was a superb compliment to our meal offering many flavors of fresh produce and medium to spicy salsas. Highly impressed. Muchas Gracias!

Yelp
We had dinner here tonight and everything was utterly delicious. My boyfriend had the carne asada burrito and I had carne asada tacos with beans and guacamole. I loved that they actually seasoned their carne asada which makes it so flavorful. The many assortments of salsa was awesome I wanted to take them all home. We decided this will be our go to Mexican spot. The guys working tonight provided awesome customer service and the environment was clean.

Yelp
This place is 10 out of 10, the handmade flour tortillas are the bomb and the meat is delicious and flavorful. Not to mention the ladies are very nice and friendly. Love great service they gave us. thank you so much for the flour tortillas we came all the way from San Francisco to eat at this place and it did not disappoint us yummy

Yelp
I'm so happy I stopped at this place. This is some of the best tacos I've had in a while. I didn't take photos of everything we ate because they disappeared way too fast. The flavor is there, in every aspect, from the salsa, to the sazon. Stop in and check them out, there's a variety of meats to choose from, homemade tortillas, aqua de horchata that was made fresh. They keep the business clean, and they're very attentive to their customers.

Yelp
Chiccaron guisado!!!! Not a lot of places do it like this. Fresh made tortillas. Platter of 5 different salsas and other condiments Charred asada. Eating here is definitely worth the experience

Yelp
Tried their al pastor and asada tacos chikali style and thought they were delicious. $4 each. Tried the guac and green salsa and both were great. Will return. On a side note my friend had the al pastor burrito and said it wasn't great. The al pastor isn't on a trompo (vertical rotisserie style) but to me it had good flavor. Parking in the little plaza was not too bad, there were several spots available around 1pm on a weekday. I would definitely recommend checking it out, I know I'll be back. (They are also on Ubereats for delivery!)

Yelp
The food was delicious. They have handmade flour tortillas. Customer service was great. The owner brought a little bit of Mexicali to Inglewood, CA

Evon O.

Yelp
My spouse keeped insisting for us to check this place out because of social media.‍ That they make their flour tortillas by had. We went and the place was dead inside, meaning no customers and all staff members on their phone. We looked at the menu. I ordered their sampler plate with 5 flour tortillas. My spouse order 2 tacos. 1- Asada 1-Pastro To drink we order two horchatas. Tortillas were from a pack NOT HAND MADE!!! The planter was a small 8.5 plate size that order had Chicharrón En salsa, papas, pasas con carne, which I could not eat. Very strong taste of cumin, which right away started giving me a heartburn. Eggs with ham, very salty and DRY, eggs with chorizo and carne guisada. They gave use a tray with different spicey salsas, chopped cabbage and pico de gallo. Our Bill was $35. Plus dollars. Don't recommend and will not return. They is no hype here.

Yelp
The quality of the food was good but definitely over priced for what it is. I'm glad I came to check it out and taste it but would I go out of my way to go again? Probably not.

Yelp
Today was my first time here and omg! I must come back ! I got 1 vampiro and an horchata and i was stuffed! Service was fast and friendly. I wanna try everything!

Yelp
Ordered bistec con papa, good homemade meal!! Also got some asada tacos, seasoned well, amazing taste, in homemade tortillas, me and my man loved them. Rice and beans is really good too. Everything taste good and homemade!!

Jakiya T.

Yelp
Food was amazing might be the best LA Tacos. Honorable mention to Clemens which I love. However this place is indoors, perfectly seasoned, not too many options but a lot of options if you get it. They give you so many topping and sauces which was unnecessary because the flavor of EVERYTHING was snacking. Service was A1 as well she gave me samples ! I don't eat eggs, so I got it without.
google avatar

Douglas G.

Yelp
Food was great. It's a small hole in the wall with limited parking but the place was a great find. Homemade flour tortillas and the food was great. Coming back soon to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Bomb! The tortillas are addicting, it feels like you are eating a home made meal! Delicious!

Yelp
Stopped on way to Clippers game - great tacos!!!! Yummy!!! Walked to Intuit Dome after for game :-)

Stephen L.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Service was kind and quick! We grabbed some quick food before heading to the airport, a really good array of salsas and food options I got the carne con chile chikali style, it was so so good.

Marco J.

Yelp
Not worth the hype they talk about. Food was 3/10 and the lady that works there just mad dogs you as you ask questions.

Estef M.

Yelp
Beyond happy with this place. I've been searching for a place that makes handmade FLOUR tortillas and on top of that the guisados!!! It's real authentic comfort food you would see made at home! This is not your standard corner street taco vendor and can't be in the same category. Carne con papa scooped up with handmade flour tortillas is *chefs kiss*

Yelp
I love this place. I used to drive to the one in East LA and when I heard they moved to Inglewood..I was like what???!? Just down the street! They remind me of Juarez style Guisado burritos that I used to eat as a kid when visiting family in chihuahua. Recommend!

Joe D.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food I had the Tacos Chikali style and the were good and tasty. I had two asada and two Pastor and my friend got the Piccadillo rice n beans. We both liked the food and it felt homemade. Which is a good thing. The only thing that surprised me was the price. It was a little on the pricey side $40. And I wasn't expecting that.

Liliana B.

Yelp
First time at this place, what brought me here was the concept "guisados" on handmade flour tortillas. Had to try it! They did not disappoint on the service and food. I tried the papas con carne which to my tastebuds was overwhelming with condiments, not personally my taste but not bad, other than that the huevo con chorizo, the carne con chile very very good but the "star taco" for sure was surprisingly the last taco I added to my order was superb!!! I mean delicious chicharrón con salsa, and hate that I ordered just one. I mean I will have to come back for more. Hope they don't change the recipe. It was very tasty taco de chicharrón en salsa. Tacos had no chance in waiting in taking a picture. So take my word, try this place.

Raul V.

Yelp
Food is very good. Wish they had the prices on the menu. Service is excellent, food is on point . Wish they would open on Mondays .

Karla C.

Yelp
I highly recommend the food; it's absolutely delicious and incredibly tasty. Saw this on tik tok and has to try.

Jonathan J.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. Terrible customer service. Don't even bother coming here. My whole family is from mexicali so I was really excited to try these tacos but the service and wait just to place an order is not worth it. Especially when the place is damn near empty

Iris R.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service was okay. But the worker who makes the tortillas didn't wash her hands after touching money and other things. That is very nasty to witness because it's crosscontamination to us costumers.

james c.

Yelp
Food wasn't terrible but they forgot almost half of our order in the delivery. They also only gave out 3 salsas which wouldn't have been enough if they would not have forgotten half of our order but since they did it turned out being just enough.

Ricardo P.

Yelp
Had the al pastor, asada chikali style, barbacoa chikali style, and regular barbacoa tacos. Each was great. I do prefer the trompo style al pastor, and even though theirs is not that style, it is very flavorful, well seasoned, and has good consistency. I only regret that they were out of deshebrada, which I also wanted to try. The asada was very good. If it isn't cooked over a wood fire, it's not the same for me, and theirs definitely has that smokey flavor. It's mesquite grilled, and just writing about it makes me want to eat some more. The flour tortillas were excellent. I love the Baja style tortillas and food in general, and this did not disappoint. I could eat a few of their hand made flour tortillas, and that alone would be worth it. They also serve their food alongside a tray full of toppings like guacamole sauce, spicy pickled onions, salsa, limes, and more. To top it off their service was exceptional. They were very attentive, happy to explain about available options, and welcoming. Last but not least, everything was clean and they had good music.
