Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Locals swear by the carne asada and pollo asada (both experienced in delicious whiffs from the parking lot) served at this small, homey downtown fixture, owned and operated by the Bravo family for over 20 years. While Phoenix boasts countless Mexican restaurants, few stretches compare to the density of “Calle 16” on 16th Street between Jefferson and Thomas. Asadero Norte de Sonora rises above its neighbors by dishing out affordable, top‑notch Sonoran‑style fare in a setting that feels like a cozy living room, with picnic benches, tiled tables, and a television set tuned to telenovelas. To build your own magnificent tacos, order the parillada — a mixed grill combining a choice of three meats that also comes with grilled onions and jalapeños — fantastic charro beans, pickled onions, lime, guacamole, and griddled flour tortillas from Sonora." - McConnell Quinn

Just got off a long flight from the East Coast and was told my the car rental representative to come here. This place did not disappoint. The girls warmly welcomed us and sat us right away. We ordered the whole chicken. This can feed 2-4 people. Everything was delicious! The limonada was tasty and refreshing. If you're in the area or coming off a flight, make this your first stop. It's minutes from the airport!

No frills, tiny restaurant with really good pareillada (small table hibachi) with your choice of up to 3 proteins med & large sizes. We bought 3 large with all the options and fed 10 people, come with beans, guac, cucumbers limes & flour or corn tortillas. It's was really good & the beans were delicious! &&Complimentary chips and salsas (green & red). The horchata and Jamaica were really good too. No alcohol is served here. Service was ok, no real effort in giving the correct drink to person who ordered it but we figured it out. Also had the churro cheesecake my daughter loved it. We paid $160+tip.

Greeted as soon as we walked in. The environment is clean and inviting. Our waitress attended to us immediately. Kind, courteous staff who check up on us regularly. The food was phenomenal! We had the media parillada for 2. It comes in a hot tray heated by charcoal with 3 steamy meats of your choice, 7 homemade tortillas, salsa, chips, onions, jalapenos, grilled onions and and charro beans. You still get a side of guacamole, cucumbers, limes, and red onions. Everything was delicious! I highly recommend this place. Prices are very affordable too. We will be returning.

Service was excellent. Bilingual menus and service. Food was served hot and stayed hot on their serving tray. Beans salsa and chips were given to us before our meal. Real flour tortillas were served with our meal. Carne Asada was good so was the seasoned pork.

This Mexican restaurant felt super authentic and the food was delicious. We ordered two samplers as a group of five and were served some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. The food had great taste, wasn’t oily at all. It felt simple yet sophisticated! Where the ingredients and preparation speak for themselves and don’t need unnecessary fluff. We had grilled chicken, tongue, carne asada and braised beef. The sauces were spicy and delicious. I am glad we ended up at this restaurant!

Google
My husband said this was one of the best meals of his life! My 17 y/o and 9y/o loved it as well! We went back the next night because it is that good!

Google
The perfect hole in the wall experience! Not much to look at form the outside but open the door to a very authentic and hospital experience. Seat yourself and be served with a smile, I can only imagine the friendly faces this place has served over the years. Complimentary chips and delicious salsa, a good selection of Mexican drinks, and THE SMELL OF THE DELICIOUS MEATS COOKING WILL DRIVE YOU NUTS!! We ordered a meal for 2, comes with 7 tortilla wrapped cozy warm, and choice of 3 meat served in a hot sizzling serving tray. We got Barbacoa, chicken, and carnitas, all delicious!!! Great spot to stop to fill your belly!

Google
I came here for dinner. Was trying to get my lengua burrito enchilada style but with the meat cooked well done. When trying to place my order the waitress didn't want to bother taking my order or care to listen to the request of food being well done. Because I didn't speak Spanish . This caused my food to be thrown away nothing more disgusting than having mediocre cooked meat. I normally get a carne asada burrito as I never have problems. Customer service at this location needs to be fixed but I know it will never change. Guess you should know spanish to want to order food correctly at this business.

Yelp
Landed starving and was looking for a spot to grab tacos or a torta. This no frill, family run spot did not disappoint. The torta was the best I've ever had, and the salsas had just right level of heat while being so flavorful! So glad I took a chance on this sweet little spot! Staff was friendly and welcoming!

Yelp
Cute hole in the wall vibe: there's plenty of parking in the side streets around the area if you can't get a spot in the lot itself. It's family run and the decor is simple and has a very home-y vibe. The salsas they provide are delicious and spicy. There were two of us here and we ordered the Half Parillada with tongue, carne asada, and al pastor. It was so much meat - more than enough to satisfy us. I ended up liking the al pastor the most but they were all delicious: well cooked and flavored while still retaining excellent juiciness. Both the corn and flour tortillas were excellent and the accompanying soup was the perfect side appetizer to the entire meal. We also ordered horchatas - those were also delicious. Everyone was also very friendly and the food arrived pretty quickly. The prices are also excellent for the amount of food you receive. Overall, would highly recommend to everyone.

Yelp
Looking for simple but tasty Mexican food that is affordable - we stumbled about Asadero and saw great reviews We started with the quest fundido and then shared a chicken torta. (Chips and salsa were complimentary) both dishes were very tasty and the service was great My only complaint was the store bought tortilla chips
google avatar

Jimmy P.

Yelp
This place is solid as far as consistency. The chicken is still as far as flavor, texture and the color. Greatful to have authentic restaurants as this here especially when it's so Hot! The sides are always fresh and flavorful. Very nice people behind the counter. Gracias!!

Yelp
Asadero Norte De Sonora 122 N 16th St Phoenix, AZ February 02, 2023 Food: 2/5 Service: 0/5 Portion size: 4/5 Visit: Came for dinner to our usual at work, and Had issues with the order that couldn't be resolved without payment. Food: We ordered 4 carne Asada burritos two without guac, I didn't know cabbage comes in burritos as we ordered here before and never remember that in my burritos. Service: Pick up order, Service was not great couldn't help me with a mess up because I didn't know cabbage and onions came in the burrito when I asked if it could be swapped out the rep stated "no, that was personal error you can order another one that's all we can do for you." That showed me this location is not worried about customers just worried about margins. For Dinner we spent $56 our usually when we order here 1-3x a week from work, for myself my meal was only $12

Yelp
Unassuming, simple, authentic hole in the wall restaurant. They offer cebeza (beef head) and lengua (beef tongue) which is a plus. These meat cuts are common in Central and South America and should be more popular.

Yelp
A Delicious Find Asadero Norte de Sonora is a hidden gem. I stopped by this restaurant based on the many positive Yelp reviews, and I'm so glad I did. The atmosphere is inviting and the staff are friendly and accommodating. The menu is diverse and offers something to satisfy everyone's appetite. The serving sizes are large and flavorful, and everything is fresh and made to order. On this visit, I ordered the Carne Asada burrito, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was flavorful and tender. It was some of the carne asada I've had in a very long time and the salsa and chips I couldn't stop eating which are made fresh daily. Great atmosphere, wallet friendly prices, and excellent service. If you're in the mood for great Mexican food, stop by you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. The food is better than most places but it's not great. You do get a decent portion but it lacks flavor. One of the salsas was straight up Costco chunky salsa. The horchata tasted like the powder stuff. It looks like an authentic, hole in the wall, mom and pop restaurant but it was disappointing. Skip, not worth the social media hype.
google avatar

Fuling Y.

Yelp
Back here after being gone still wonderful, has not changed a bit aside from the new playfield leveling-price structure in Joes America.
google avatar

Yelp
This is definitely a hole the wall! The parking lot has only 10 spaces and inside, there is only 10 tables! Haha but if you have the chance to wait then the statement "it's worth the wait!" couldn't be any more true! I have been to a lot of Mexican places and being Mexican myself, I feel very confident telling you that the tacos/ meat is AMAZING! I was so full and could not stop eating because it was so delicious ! Also do you guys know how hard to make a guacamole that is tasteful and not plain? Well they did it! The guacamole was so good and tasteful! The ladies working were also very friendly and attentive! We did have a big group and felt like they checked on us multiple times! Highly recommend this hole in the wall!
google avatar

Yelp
El pollo asado estuvo excelente, y los frijoles a la olla! Highly recommend the quarter or half chicken Plate. Make your own tacos style, is the best.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I have ever eaten. And I have been to many family run restaurants in several Mexican cities. The first clue was their small parking area was full. On entering, all of the ten or so tables were full and I noticed the customers were all smiling and talking over mostly empty plates. I ordered a plate of barbacoa which was accompanied by charro beans (yum!!) and chips with two home made salsas. Both were delicious and spicy. The decor was small Mexican village rustic but clean. If i could give 6 stars, i would.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday evening with a group of 4, parking lot parking and street parking. Before entering, I could already smell the food! We had: - chips and red / green salsas: the salsas both had a kick, surprisingly spicy and really flavorful and tasty. I really enjoyed the salsas, as they were also thick. Really good. - paradilla which came with 3 meats of our choice - carne asada, barbacoa, and pastor. It came on a structure that keeps the meat warm, and the meats came with grilled green onion / tomatoes / jalapeno and a little dish of guac, raw cucumbers, tomatoes. Meats were quite flavorful, barbacoa was quite wet and juicy, the carne and pastor were just okay, could've been more flavorful. - churro cheesecake: didn't have churros but had churro cheesecake! It had an actual churro but it wasn't fresh or crunchy. Cheesecake was super creamy, came with fresh strawberries and whipped cream but the cheesecake was really sweet, not a super big fan of that. Good amount of food, pretty good. Was checked up on a few times which was acceptable service.

Yelp
Needed carne!! Didn't know where to go, Yelp saved me. Searched Yelp apo and was kindly directed to this place on a Sunday afternoon. It's small inside and Mexico-authentic big time. A very talented female guitar player was playing old Mexican mariachi like standards. All conversations at other tables were deeply Latin derived. Cheerful Latina X took my order and in a few minutos después, me voy con mucho carne. Once home, my bounty of carne, great chatro beans and killer flour/corn mix tortillas greatest me. Very tasty!!! Fresh and delightful. My tummy giggled with delight and glee. Great price too. I'll def go back with my sights now set on the broasted chicken. So authentic, thought I was in Mexicali or Puerto Vallarta for a moment.

Yelp
Food is a bit disappointing, rib hardly has any meat in it, beef steak was not tender...
google avatar

Jose O.

Yelp
Was delicious and prompt service. We Had a carne asada platter for three and added ribs and beans for a meal for 4.
google avatar

Christal P.

Yelp
The food was delicious, it's a small restaurant but the service was great and as stated above the food was delicious.

Penny M.

Yelp
Is so good,I love it ,,the tacos are my favorite some places don't give you a choice on tortilla,,this place offer's a choice of flour or corn tortillas and my favorite is flour I recommend this home style cooking place.

Georgina M.

Yelp
Half parrillada; the cabeza and Barbacoa were extremely greasy they were basically swimming in greas and the ribs dry, very hard and no meat. They take forever to serve. Basically more than 30 minutes. I used to like this place, but not anymore. We were very disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow. Just wow. This family run spot knows what they are doing. We ordered a 3 meat paradilla and a barbacoa burrito. The paradilla had pastor (marinated pork), carne asada (sliced steak), and a smoked beef rib. You do get your choice of meats - they also had chicken, and a few more options. They brought us chips and salsa, and we each got a cup of beans. The beans were amazing. It was half beans and half broth. Very flavorful. I had the paradilla which also came with roasted onions, and jalapeños, Sliced limes, cucumber, flour and corn tortillas, and guacamole. It was amazing. Everything was amazing. We were the only people that ordered in English for the hour that we were there - the employees are bilingual. Menus are in English and Spanish also. They also offer tacos, tortas (sandwiches), quesadillas and a few other items. You can smell the smoker when you walk in. This family is representing Their region of Mexico in their name and their pride shows in the food too!

Yelp
Hole in the wall joint.. good food but very limited parking.. it gets busy here fast so get here early or come after the lunch or before dinner rush
google avatar

Catrina L.

Yelp
Hubby and I needed a quick bite before I drop him off for his flight and we weren't going to settle for airport food. So we found this gem right next to the gas station while we were filling up. The order took 10 mins to be ready which is a good sign because it means they are making it fresh! I got the veggie tostada and oh my goodness. I do not know what they put but I remember that they spread refried beans on it, it has some raw onions, avocado and tomatoes as far as I can remember and it tasted so fresh. Hubby got some type of burrito, I cannot remember the meat but he mentioned that he enjoyed every single part of it and glad he was not eating airport food. Hubby and I agrees to stop by here whenever we are in the area!

Yelp
Asadero Norte is a small mom and pop shop located near downtown Phoenix. If your looking for a super authentic place, look no further. I grew up coming to this place. My parents really like the quality, taste, and the food has been so so so consistent over the years. The technique charcoal grilling gives the meat a very distinct taste that is hard to beat. If you are with a party of 4 or more I always recommend the parrillada. If you aren't super hungry other great options are the carne asada burritos, caveza tacos, frijoles charros. They have some really classically flavored drinks (Horchata, Jamaica, and Lemon) all of them are very good but super sweet. (I'd recommend getting another cup and a cup of water and mix it together to taste). Check this place out if you haven't already! Thanks y'all! Cheers enjoy!! :)
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Paradilla with 3 meats is clutch!!! This hole in the wall seems to be packed all the time. The tortillas were delicious as were the salsas and guacamole. The carne asada and pastor were especially good. Barbacoa was good but not my favorite. Great for takeout too!

Linh N.

Yelp
The flavors were amazing and the service was great! Just a little hole in the wall. I was already planning my next visit while still enjoying my current meal
google avatar

Mikey R.

Yelp
I liked the inside. It feels like a rustic adobe home. My waitress said the chicken is the most popular item. I like chicken. I ordered the half chicken. It was dry and needed salt. The tortillas weren't homemade. The chips were from Costco. The guac had no flavor. Everyone raves about this place in the reviews. I feel like I did something wrong. Is it me? Am I the problem? Gonna go reevaluate my life.
google avatar

Emir H.

Yelp
Small corner and parking but overall fantastic food and would definitely recommend. .
google avatar

A R.

Yelp
I always only get the chicken burrito and an horchata. The burrito is filled with grilled chicken and refried beans. It comes with a side of salsa, grilled chile, cucumber, lime slices, and pickled red onions. The horchata can be sweet and doesn't taste homemade but regardless it's part of my order!!

C L.

Yelp
The food was great and good portions for the reasonable prices and exceptional service. I loved it and highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Ginnie L.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican food places in Phoenix, hands down. Hole in the wall place with an unassuming interior, but the food is out of this world. Whenever we have visitors from out of town, I take them here so I can see their eyes widen when the parillada comes out. The rest of their menu probably is fantastic as well, but we always get the parillada because it's so good and honestly has the wow factor. Choose three meats, and it comes out on this burning little grill with onions, peppers, and tortillas on the side. Even the charro beans that come with it are delicious! I've tried many of their meats but my favorite is the cabeza or lengua - so tender, juicy, and flavorful. You can't go wrong. The half parillada can easily feed three people and still have leftovers that are bomb the next day, too. Note: if you're looking for beer to go with your food, they don't sell alcohol, just sodas.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
Asadero Norte de Sonora is the ONLY place where I go to get tortas! It's a simple yet insanely delicious meal. Something about their combination of bread, carne asada, and Mayo makes it's flavors incomparable to any other restaurant in Phoenix. It's a family owned business and the staff there are always very welcoming. They have other items on the menu such as tacos and quesadillas. Their frijoles charros are lowkey underrated. The red salsa is not watered down and has pretty good amount of spicy. Fun fact- they have one of the best horchata in the Valley!
google avatar

Hillary C.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorite restaurants OF ALL TIME. I had never had a parillada until Asadero, and now this is my favorite way to eat tacos! Family style, heated plate, and build-your-own tacos! Usually I get a 1/2 parillada with half carne asada and half pastor for 2 people and a full parillada for 4-5 people. We've gone to Asadero with large groups (10ish people) during lunch and they've always been helpful and accommodating. Note: Sometimes we call ahead for larger orders since it takes a certain amount of time to prepare! The parillada always comes with some veggies on top, bean soup per person (absolutely delicious), tortillas, guac, salsa, cucumbers.
google avatar

A. Renee B.

Yelp
This place literally takes the cake as one of my favorite meals ever! I stumbled upon Asadero Norte De Sonora after leaving the airport. Mind you this is my first time in Phoenix and to have my first meal as Barbecued carne asada, al pastor, and lengua made the start of my trip memorable. As we pullled up the parking lot was small but packed to the gills -I knew then this place was good. As we entered the tables were spaced out to provide socially distant accommodations. We walked up and were seated in no time. We ordered the parrillada over charcoal and it was divine. The meat was firey and fresh and the added vegetables created a smokey added layer of taste to every taco. I would fly back to Arizona just to come here. It was that darn good!

Hank F.

Yelp
I can not possibly speak higher of this place. Absolutely the best food in Phoenix. And reasonably priced. Couldn't recommend more
google avatar

Juan D.

Yelp
Big variety of food from this awesome staff. I just ordered the medium parrillada with carne asada, pastor and chicken. Everything was good really no complains about the spot. Smelled great as soon as we walked in. Also ordered the queso fundido so slap some cheese on my tacos. Oooooh and the beans were
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
I came to Phoenix on vacation from New Jersey and was looking for a spot to eat when this came up. Let me tell you I was NOT disappointed! Each table receives a complimentary chips and salsa (homemade and spicy) with a cup of bean soup which was so flavorful I couldn't get over it! Who doesn't love free food, especially when it's good?! I ordered a large cheese quesadilla and that comes with shredded lettuce and guacamole. My parents ordered a whole chicken asado which was the best chicken I've ever eaten! The chicken is properly seasoned and the smoked flavor is out of this world. Also the chicken comes with white corn tortillas and guacamole. I also ordered a side of pico de Gallo and that was spicy but so good! If you're looking for fresh, quality, and inexpensive food come here! You won't be disappointed! Everything is amazing! From the service to the food. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Rick E.

Yelp
Everything here was super tasty and fresh. Salsa and charro beans was spicy but very good. We got the half chicken and an asada burrito. All was very good portions for the pricey and I would eat again if I am ever in the area. This was the first spot we ate at after flying into Phoenix from San Antonio.
google avatar

Nestor E.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place and waited so long (the pandemic) So finally!!! Attention was perfect.... The food was ok...not what I expected .. Ribs were plain,no flavor.... Chicken was dry ,over cooked And the barbacoa was the only one that I enjoyed the most . The chips & salsas were better than the meat.. I may comeback...if I'm around and there's nothing open ..
google avatar

Elsa L.

Yelp
SOO GOOD!! So worth the drive!! Best carne asada ever!!! The place it's small so there might be a small wait if its crowded, it's a small business with just one server but it's so so good!!
google avatar

Carlos F.

Yelp
The food is great man it really freaking good if u in arizona phoenix trying their torras out
google avatar

Jorge D.

Yelp
The flour tortillas were some of the best I've had. 10/10 would recommend. I wouldn't bother getting the corn tortillas because I'll only want more of the flour.

Troy T.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Nice small and quaint establishment. Must try in my opinion.
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
Amazing food, I stop here whenever I am Phoenix. Chicken is my favorite. The carne is very good as well and best fresh!
google avatar

Veronica P.

Yelp
Omgoodnes! The best food is usually a small hole in the wall! This is it! We had the parrillada with chicken, carne asada and pork. Flavorful, tender and plentiful. Authentic as its gonna get.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
I went here with a friend from Hermosillo who was missing his Sonoran tacos. This place is super clean, casual and offers a friendly staff. I sampled the carne asada and the pollo tacos. Both were tasty, but the carne asada was amazing. My friend loved it!!

Dariana T.

Yelp
The best food I've ever had in my life. I leave satisfied every time. I am sad the prices have changed drastically since I've first started going there but not enough to stop me from going. You pay for things you enjoy! The service is great just be prepared to wait, it's worth it anyways
google avatar

Jovana K.

Yelp
Where to start, I absolutely love this place. Their chicken tacos are my absolute favorite with flour tortilla. They also have the platters with all kinds of meats which I am a huge fan of, this place is very authentic, I promise you will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Fernando G.

Yelp
Loved the torta and the frijoles charros. Good quality and service. If you enjoy authentic Sonora style food. This is your ticket.
