LA’s Food Experts Discuss Their Best Restaurant Meals of 2024 | Eater LA

"Matthew Kang described joining Walter and Margarita Manzke "at a surprise preview lunch of a Basque-style [asador] in the Philippines, a short drive from Tagaytay, which ended up being really great. It felt like a Filipino version of Extebarri from chef Chele Gonzalez." (Preserved comparison to Extebarri and chef Chele Gonzalez; original place name redacted.)" - Eater Staff

My fiancé and I had dinner at Asador Alfonso to celebrate our anniversary, and it was such a memorable experience. We managed to secure a same-day booking and were grateful there was an opening -we booked in the morning just in time. Since we chose the set menu, we asked if any pork items could be swapped out, and the team was incredibly prepared, communicative, and happy to answer all our questions. A thoughtful touch we truly appreciated was that they printed our set menu with our names and the date as a souvenir. The service throughout the night was excellent: staff were knowledgeable about the cuisine and clearly explained each dish. Everything we ate was delicious, and the set menu itself was a wonderful, exciting experience. There are three set menu options available, and we liked how transparent and organized everything was from start to finish. To make the night even more special, they surprised us with extra dessert and a lovely anniversary card on the table. We’re already looking forward to coming back next year with friends to try the Journey menu. Highly recommended for a special occasion. Note: Petit Fours that was part of the menu was not pictured because we ate too fast.

We celebrated our anniversary at Asador Alfonso, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, the entire team made us feel extra special. A special mention to Chef Rodrigo, whose personal touch and warm service truly elevated the evening. His Spanish dishes were extraordinary—unique, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. The servers were just as wonderful, making sure everything felt seamless and celebratory. The interior design also stands out, carrying a unique story that adds depth and charm to the whole dining experience. With the exceptional food, heartfelt service, and unforgettable atmosphere, Asador Alfonso truly deserves a Michelin star. One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had—highly recommended!

Asador Alfonso, as we were told, is visual artist and architect Carlo Calma’s love letter to his father. And what a beautiful gesture of love it is. You can feel it the moment you arrive — the intention in every detail, the harmony between space, nature, and food, the quiet reverence embedded in the experience. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a story told through architecture, flavors, textures, and atmosphere. Every dish feels crafted with purpose. Every corner of the space reflects thought, memory, and emotion. And to be invited into that kind of personal vision — that kind of devotion — is something truly special. A heartfelt tribute, expressed not in words, but in the unmistakable language of artistry and care. Asador Alfonso’s newly awarded Michelin-star 10-course menu is an experience unlike any other — a journey, really. Truly, one of the finest culinary experiences DJ Bone and I, ever had. Thank you to Wilma for the extended hospitality and careful attention. And Davey and all the wait staff, for explaining each dish with deep intention.

Asador Alfonso has a beautiful setting—the interior and overall atmosphere really stand out and feel different from the usual. The experience itself was nice and enjoyable. While the food was okay, it wasn’t the highlight for me. Still, it’s a pleasant place to visit, especially if you appreciate ambiance.

If a Michelin-star restaurant is defined as an experience demanding a detour or a special-purpose visit, Asador Alfonso is the shining example of such an adventure. From start to finish — pulling up to an immaculately maintained yard, a golf cart ride to where the Calma mansion greets you, the walk around the property, fantastic staff service, gorgeous open kitchen, and their absolutely top-class Spanish approach to food, Asador is at its A-game. The menu items are predicated around simplicity. This is in contrast to the tasting menus in Manila which focus on innovation and complexity. Some may find the focus on a few fresh and well-sourced ingredients basic, but we found it a great departure from the other Michelins in Manila — fresh, thoughtful, and accessible. In particular, the Ostra (Gallagher oyster with chicken and mushroom escabeche) and the Ensaladilla de Cangrejo (Crab and potato mousse salad with Ikura) were standouts. Special shoutout to our favorite server Kenneth, made our experience extremely memorable!

One of the best restaurants in the Philippines. My family tried their tasting menu and everything was delicious. Special mentions: Jamon de Wagyu, Japanese Wagyu, Queso de Torta, and Vanilla Flan. Service was excellent too! Can't wait to go back. Highly recommend Asador Alfonso! Definitely worth the trip.

We took the bypass roads to reach Asador Alfonso and once you get to the place, it feels like home - a very modern, luxurious home. Service is excellent, and the food is lovely. We tried the solomillio, cochinillo, lechazo, steaks, pulpo, croqueta alfonso, arroz de setas, arroz de calamares, their flan(!), tarta de manzanas and tarta de queso.

It was an exceptional fine-dining experience! Each dish was exquisitely crafted, bringing together flavors I never imagined would harmonize so beautifully. The servers delivered warm, attentive, and truly commendable service. The chefs were masterful in their craft and very courteous! While the stunning architecture and refined ambiance made the entire evening unforgettable. Will definitely be back!
