Ashland Hill - Review - Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Ashland Hill is a place no one seemed to care much about when it opened, but has risen to become a Santa Monica after-work go-to. The bar food (especially the mac and cheese) is solid, and that big beer garden is very dog-friendly and wonderful on a weekday night. There’s a Happy Hour every day of the week from 3pm - 6pm with $6 draft beer, gin and tonics, and wine." - Brant Cox

Where To Eat Outside In Santa Monica

"Santa Monica spot Ashland Hill doesn’t look like much from Main St., but once you head to the patio, you’ll find a huge outdoor dining area with socially distanced crowds eating burgers and salads, and drinking from the bar’s very good local beer list. Reservations here." - brett keating

Los Angeles’s 9 Best Gin and Tonics to Drink Now | Eater

"There’s more to this Santa Monica beer garden than an enviable list of super-local craft brews. The after-work crowd shows up for a bar-friendly food menu — things like a giant pretzel, lamb meatball, and shishito mac and cheese — a nice enough wine list, and a whole menu devoted to gin-based cocktails. You know the gin and tonic will be ace, but if you want to get fancier, look to the Pear Pressure, an instant fall classic. The baking spice notes and dry citrus flavor truly “pear” well with The Botanist gin’s 22 Islay botanicals for a very seasonable G&T. It’ll transport you right to Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family." - Vox Creative

Really enjoyed the hamburger. Couldn't decide between the sweet potato fries and truffle fries, so we had both. Thumbs up. Great atmosphere and wait staff. It wasn't crowded when we were there but I imagine it gets pretty lively. I'll definitely come back.

First timers, live on other side of town but heard it was owned by Art’s Table, that had many great years & food until service slipped & they closed. We had one particularly awful experience towards the end while the entire staff chatted & ignored us at an indoor table for dinner in an empty dining room. We literally had to get up, break up the convo to ask someone if we could order. So this review is directed to AH management. The gentleman at the bar/counter Tuesday pm was awesome, great attitude, service & made us great drinks. Great first impression. Not great was a bare bones & unattractive side/back patio that looks like a dive bar. With that beautiful brick building, you can do better. We sat on the side patio at a dirty table, sticky plastic menus (ugh) while wait staff sat directly behind us (maybe break times?) carrying on loudly, yelling to each other as they passed by. This place has so much potential. I hope you don’t end up like Arts Table. We had planned to eat but left & went to the Library Alehouse instead.

Dog friendly! We sat out front in the protected patio area. This is not a full service restaurant. You must order and pay for your food at the front window. They will give you a number and you need to find a table. My Cobb salad was delicious! I loved the Crunch of the garbanzo beans. I wou definitely order this salad again. It was very filling. My friend ordered the tuna tacos and she said if one likes spicy, then this might be good. She can't handle spicy foods well, but she was hungry so she ate all three tacos and her mouth was in fire. This place is casual and has a nice vibe for people watching . The restaurant has a full bar and specialty cocktails as well as beer and cider.

Wonderful mixology and food that you can enjoy in their covered patio.

The burgers were delicious, the owner and staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Nice patio space. We will be back

Google
Plenty of outdoor seating. We just had drinks, but the menu looks pretty promising. Plenty of drink options and local draught beers as well. Quick service, just order at the window and pop a squat out front or choose from about 10 tables in the rear with more shade. Edit: food is wonderful, the $5 shawarma and $5 burger during happy hour is perfect. Happy hour is 3-6p, M-F.

Google
Great restaurant for a pandemic. All seating is outdoors. You order and pay at the order window. Servers bring your food to your table. I had the eponymous Ashland Hill burger. It was prepared exactly the way I ordered it, and it was excellent. My wife had the chicken schwarma wrap. Also excellent. The fries were deep fried exactly right. Portions were generous. I recommend the Ashland Hill Cafe on Main Street in Santa Monica.

Google
This place is great! The food and service are fantastic. Their beer selection is on point. I love having an enclosed patio too. It's quieter, cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Big big bonus: their patio is dog friendly! Not to mention they have a dog menu. I love bringing my pup here when I take him out all morning, it's a treat for both of us.

Yelp
Recently ,I was writing a review of a Ojai restaurant that wasn't great so I thought why don't I review some that I do love ! So Here's one .... We've been here multiple times & it's always a good time. , we enjoy the food, service is on point seems to be run smooth, the vibe is attentive but not pushy . We can count on a pleasant experience ! so we'll be back more often .

Yelp
Overrated & Overpriced. And over it. Disappointed about this place. They're supposed to be known for their burgers. I specifically asked about how they cook their temperatures, went on their advice and they overcooked and dried it out anyway. No, I didn't give them the opportunity to fix it, was too annoyed paying $26 for a bacon cheeseburger w/ fries. Calamari were the smallest I've ever seen and mainly just the fried bread. Meh. Appetizer which they call a starter didn't come out as an appetizer it came out with the meal. (That's why they call them appetizers). Leaned toward the 2 stars because it says "could've been better" but Indidnt wanna be too harsh....

Yelp
I love Ashland Hill and have been here a number of times. It is a great place to bring friends and family visiting the Santa Monica area. The drinks are great, the food is all delicious, and the extended seating options always make for a great time! Food - I have tried the fish tacos and the Caesar salad, as well as the burger. All delicious options! I really enjoy the fish tacos and tend to gravitate towards those every time I visit. Portion size is very good and you will definitely feel full going there for lunch! Drinks are great, I have tried a number of the different cocktails and there are also beer options as well. Service - You order at the counter and then take a number to your table of choice. Everyone who works here has always been very friendly and accommodating! Ambiance - The patio seating in the back is great for large groups. TVs allow for a great spot to grab a bite and watch a game! There is additional seating along Main St. Sometimes there is music as well but not too loud! The location is perfect if you are spending the day at the beach or anywhere in the West LA area.

Yelp
When it says "locals only" I think they mean it. We walked by and saw it had outside seating. And it was a nice day. We got a salad and the chicken and waffles. Both were ok food wise. Not amazing but not bad. The service wasn't great though. Overall the person that took our order and who brought out the food were unfriendly. Wouldn't go again. It kinda of seems like they didn't want out of town people.

Yelp
Cute little place to stop by when walking around Santa Monica! It's right next to some shops & a great place for a quick bite to eat It's all outdoor seating & has heat lamps Nashville spicy chicken sandwich 7/10: was not spicy at all! Not too sure if maybe they gave me the wrong sandwich, but they said they soak their chicken in the hot sauce, I also felt like it needed more coleslaw/lettuce! Chicken was beautifully breaded & crusted though! Grilled Chicken Sandwich 8/10: was lacking some flavor, the sauce it came with didn't compliment the sandwich all too well. Chicken was cooked great! Service was kind & attentive! The ambiance was date friendly/small gatherings/ small party friendly. You walk up to order food & drinks & they are brought to you

Yelp
Today gave it another try since I was last there years ago, not long after they opened. It's a nice layout lots of outdoor dining space. Service was fine enough. Unfortunately the food was not prepared well or tasty today. We were looking for brunch and they had a few items to choose from. My friend enjoyed her chilaquiles (admittedly she likes her food very basic) but my Benedict was not good. The eggs were undercooked, the muffin soggy and untoasted and the hollandaise sauce was served chilled. I couldn't figure what the heck was going on. The salad it came with was lacking dressing and tasteless, but by this point I just gave up. If I ever had to go back I'd just get the burger - that looked good passing by.

Yelp
My friend and I came here and really loved the ambience and food here! The food is delicious and we ordered the chicken and waffles and the churro style french toast as well as mimosas and coffee. The place is set up like a brewery that serves drink and brunch which is really cool concept. You order your food at the counter then go sit and they bring out your food. The reason I'm giving 3/5 stars is due to cleanliness. We picked a table but all the tables were dirty and not cleaned off between guests so we ended up having to wipe it down ourselves. Additionally I found dog hair on the table we were at. I get this place is pet friendly which is amazing but definitely need to clean in between guests! The other downside is the parking. Since it's in Santa Monica there was no parking lot and we had to pay for parking. All of this aside I will return at some point to give the place another chance and try more delicious food!

Yelp
Exceeded all expectations! All breakfast items were super delicious! I love a good Benedict but it's hard to find the right sauce in it... AH nicely surprised with it! It was a great Benedict, nice sauce and the sis rod the portion is everything! Also Breakfast Burito tasted amazing, and the best part was that it had rice!! Loved it! April Sprits was nice and strong. Moreover, service was fast and friendly, despite the long line. If you are planning to breakfast there- it's a great choice! Also, sit in the patio, it's the cutest. Music also had some nice jams! I enjoyed AH and would definitely come back!

Yelp
We had spent the morning at Venice Beach but decided to swing over to Santa Monica before driving home to Vegas. We walked up and down Main Street before setting on this place. You order at the window and are given a number. We sat at one of the tables directly in front of the restaurant so we could people watch. Only reason I took off a star was the table was not clean. We had to wipe it down. I know it's outdoors but still, someone can clean the tables between customers. Also, I got eggs Benedict and the eggs were completely hard. Not poached at all. I still ate it and didn't send it back because we needed to get on the road but it was a little bit of a letdown. The bacon was super crispy though and the sauce was also amazing! I'm trying to eat better so I'm happy it came with a salad as opposed to potatoes. The vinaigrette on the salad was delicious too! The hubby got the classic burger and he enjoyed it. Said it was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Prices weren't too bad and everyone was nice. I'd go back if I find myself in Santa Monica again.

Yelp
Simple, easy, and a very chill space. Service is slow most of the time but friendly. Food is average but the happy hour is a solid deal.

Yelp
Happy hour is great and also regular time. I really enjoy their burgers and they always have a good selection of beer.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place! I've been here twice for drinks. I love sitting outside. You just go right up and order whatever food or drinks you want and they'll bring it to you. Can him with my two girlfriends for brunch. I had an iced latte. We all shared a basic caesar salad with avocado and the french toast. Caesar salad was solid but that french toast. I did not expect it to be THAT tasty! It was so crispy and stayed crispy until we finished it. It was THAT good! This is a great place to come with your dog, friends, etc. and peso por watch! Great for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Go for food, coffee, or cocktails!

Yelp
Upbeat small joint to enjoy a casual meal. Ordered two burgers, fries, blonde beer, Diet Coke. The presentation of the burger is great. The taste was good... really meaty and filling. The service is just ok. The servers aren't as attentive. Seem to drop food off and go. You arder your food at the front so seems like they just deliver. Any extras food you have to order at front window not through them. The fries were not warm enough this time. Not sure what happened. But overall great place to go to.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was great. The guy was very welcoming. So the service is good. Wine was good. However, the food.. at least what we ordered was not god at all. The nachos were very sad looking. Didn't reallly have cheese or steak. The max and cheese.. seriously tasted like Mac and cheese from the box. The ambiance did look nice but I don't know if I would come back here to eat. Just drink.

Yelp
This place is great for a beer and a burger. Fries are good too. I like this place because they always play the best music. It's chill to hangout and I much prefer the vibe here than some other bars on Main Street.

Yelp
Stumbled into the back patio for a drink on Saturday night solely based on the good vibes from walking by. Then Michael made me one of the best martinis I've ever had in my life!! Empress gin stirred with a twist. And his secret sauce really made it special. The man clearly knows his stuff, and it makes such a difference! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

Taylor E.

Yelp
FAVORITE SPOT EVER. (Been meaning to review this place for so long) I truly cannot recommend this place enough for a drink, food, just to hang, or whatever you need. Michael is the absolute best, he'll always take care of you- whether that's a delicious espresso martini or some truffle fries on a bad Monday. I'm a local and take every friend/visitor here and they always ask to come back. 1000000/10 recommend.

Yelp
What a place to pick out for lunch! :) Lucky us. Spending the afternoon in Venice, my spouse and I started to get hungry and decided to get something to eat. After checking out 2 other places and their menus first we came across Ashland Hills and decided to eat there. I am so glad we did. The girl behind the counter where we ordered our food was extremely nice. Especially when I asked for a special request. No problem whatsoever. Also the server, she was also a total sweetheart. Friendly and welcoming. My spouse ordered an impossible burger with vegan cheese. The burger was just one of a kind ( the bun was lightly toasted, and the burger itself was carefully arranged in order to look appetizing) which you don't see that often in restaurants. We also had some crispy roasted Brussels sprouts ( OMG - delicious) and I had those amazing mac -n- cheese with bacon and on the side a fried chicken breast as an add-on. I could not stop myself. I finished it all. This is a place I can recommend to anybody who happens to be in Venice. Check it out.

Yelp
Awesome food and a great vibe. Great back patio. Highly recommend the Mexican steak salad. The bartender Lucas makes excellent cocktails! Excellent service too!
google avatar

Yelp
The staff was very friendly. I loved the location and back patio seating was very nice and spacious. The chicken shawarma wrap was delicious, I just wish the sauce they gave was bigger!!
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable place, tons of seating and parking, and good vibes. I might've gone on an off day, but with my benedict, the prosciutto was hard and tough, and the poached eggs were overcooked, more than a soft boiled egg too. Hoping to come back and see if it's better. Drinks were fantastic though!!!

Damian G.

Yelp
Very disappointed after visiting and A&H spending money at for years always had good service and decent food but the last time I went which was last Sunday It was extremely small portions and when I mentioned about this, the lady working she was unresponsive to my issues. Shane because I loved going there for lunch.

Yelp
This is one of our go-to spots for brunch and/or after the beach. You order up front and then find a table (all outdoors) in the back. It's not a huge space so can potentially get crowded. Menu has good variety, although it can be hit or miss. Most recently we got the chilaquiles, chicken tahini rice bowl, shishito mac and cheese, and French toast sticks. The chilaquiles were pretty standard. The rice bowl had great flavor (the reason I ordered it again after enjoying it last time), but this time the chicken was extremely dry, unfortunately. Mac and cheese was good with a hint of shishito flavor. The french toast sticks used to be a favorite (they were thick cut, fried, sticks of deliciousness) so we always order, but this time they came out as pretty ordinary french toast on regular (thin sliced) bread. Tasted fine, but wasn't what we had expected. Not sure if they changed the menu (menu still says "French Toast Sticks" though).
google avatar

Margie B.

Yelp
Had Saturday brunch here. The food was EXCELLENT. We had chicken and waffles, thin breaded fried chicken between Belgium waffle with cinnamon butter and syrup, fresh raspberries on the side. Hot chicken sandwich with aioli, shredded lettuce and pickle on a toasted brioche bun and fries. So good! We sat outside under an umbrella such a great morning visiting Santa Monica. I would go back anytime but I live in Illinois. If you are in Santa Monica it is well worth a visit!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Very dog friendly. Prices are SM standard but happy hour is very reasonable. $5 burger and a beer - can't go wrong. Love the back patio, especially with the heaters on a semi cold day. This is where I go for a chill meal with friends or after a morning at the beach.
google avatar

Gregg L.

Yelp
Decent neighborhood spot when you need a quick bite. I've eaten here 10+ times and even though it's not my favorite food or favorite cocktails, it hits the spot when you're in a pinch. The burger is solid, the fries are crispy and the other items I've had throughout my visits have all been pretty decent. The line and wait can get longer than they need to be at times. I've also had some duds on friendly service once or twice, but for the most part I like and keep coming back here.
google avatar

Yelp
Kate is great! Best bartender in the city. Some say in the world... To be continued.

Yelp
I went to Ashland Hill for dinner and got the hot chicken sandwich and a mango beer. DELICIOUS. The service was fast and friendly and the food was beyond tasty. It is a nice chill spot in Santa Monica. The backyard patio is great with the TVs. I prefer this over some of the local bars on the block any day of the week.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
A fun vibe. Think your standard bar food. We came on a Saturday afternoon and hung out for a bit in the back. We ordered two beers and then later the burger, fries, and pretzel. The pretzel was subpar, just not very good. It was dry and the Dijon mustard and was legit just the seeds. The beer was great, the fries were great, the burger gave me a really bad stomachache. Would not recommend the food as much as the beer and the vibes. The back patio had a great seating area with ample television that was strategically placed. There was decent shade coverage if you're terrified of the sun like me. Overall, would probably come back, just wouldn't get any of the food.
google avatar

Allen Z.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with work colleagues. The service was okay, order at the window, sat on the back patio, nothing to rave about. The music was too loud on the patio, kind of difficult to speak with people at the table over the music. The food was okay, good flavor, but too greasy for my taste. We had the onion rings and I felt overly full to the point of feeling sick. I had the burger, it was good, but I asked for medium rare, and it was well done. The parking is almost non-existent on-site, but there are meters on main or surrounding side streets. I would have to give it another try before recommending it.

Yelp
I was in South Santa Monica, a place I used to frequent. Looking for a place to get drinks with my girl. We wanted outdoor seating to be cautious in Covid times. Why am I out? Cabin fever hit me hard after approximately 1 year and 1 month of quarantine. Drinks came out fast, like in a minute. I got the jungle juice which comes in this adorable tikki mug that will make you smile. It was delicious and strong enough. Got the sweet potato fries and those were top notch but small quantity. Price: a lot for normal people, fair for Santa Monica Parking: street parking, you may have to walk several blocks or Uber here
google avatar

Yelp
So damn good. They take pride in their cocktails, from a classic martini to some mole infused perfection the my came up with. Chill vibe. Great food. Not your normal Brussels sprouts. Really exceptional.

Yelp
Fantastic neighborhood spot on Main St! COVID friendly, lots of brews to choose from, and yummy food. Came here on a Saturday afternoon after initially trying the Rose (which omg, don't, it's a zoo right now!). I've passed by Ashland Hill countless times, but had never stopped in. However, my friend loves the spot and thus, I finally got to try it! They have a host sitting out in the normal spot, but they don't actually seat you. Instead, you order at the front and then seat yourself-- there's patio dining both in front of the restaurant as well as in the back patio. While I know they have a great beer list, I wasn't feeling like drinking. So instead, I opted to simply get their chicken shawarma wrap. At only $5 it's a ridiculous steal!! My friend also got the wrap, plus fries and a hard kombucha and her total with tip was still under $20!! When the chicken shawarma came, I couldn't believe the portion. The plate came with three wraps and even though we had just finished a 8 mile hike, I ended up taking some home. The wrap (and fries I stole from my friend) where both high quality and tasty. As my friend put it, Ashland Hill is definitely a neighborhood spot and now more than ever, we need to be supporting them! The servers were all very friendly and it'll definitely be one of my go-to spots on the westside.

Yelp
Love this place! Great $5 shawarma wrap and avocado pita! Everything tasted so fresh! Fun place to hang out and take my baby to. Will definitely be coming back

Drew N.

Yelp
Great ambiance + drinks, questionable burger. I would bring a weapon of a woman here to get some cocktails before a better dinner, but dinner here would likely--and unfortunately--disappoint. That being said, I'd like to circle back and highlight the ambiance of the place. I'm an ambiance guy and this place has got it.
google avatar

Gidget N.

Yelp
Food is good, drinks are ok, prices are great. But... ...and this is a BIG BUT, and the reason for the one star review. If you live in the neighborhood you are stuck walking around their sidewalk line, with zero separation between guests, and with most guests with no masks on and no room to pass by. This includes tables, guests, bikes etc. Plus, the staff is lousy about masks. Yesterday the guy taking the orders had his mask below his nose. Today, January 3, at 1:30pm a female employee was refilling the silver tubs at the guest ordering counter with NO MASK ON!!! I want this restaurant to succeed, but I also, want them to be responsible neighbors and follow the minimal guidelines for COVID safety and protocols. This past weekend in Los Angeles there were 45,000 new cases of Covid. Please train your staff and move your line off the sidewalk or, at the very least, asks guests to keep their masks on when ordering or loitering on the sidewalks. Added to the post: On 1-8 walked by - no masks. (see photos) On 1-10 walked by, same two guys as the photos below, but this time, their masks were on their chin below their mouth and nose. On 1-13 walked by, female employee no mask at all! On 1-22 walked by, glad to see the staff were issued blue masks, now they just need to learn how to wear them, they cannot be on your chin or below your nose - ALL OF YOU. It is the responsibility of the owners of each establishment to set rules and enforce them. Go across the street to Lula, or to the Victorian where the staff at those restaurants keep their masks on all the time. It is really simple and the right thing to

Yelp
We rarely eat red meat anymore, so when we do, we expect it to be good. Before the pandemic, we'd occasionally get steak frites dinners here, because they did them well. We returned last week, ordered them at the counter, took the lone table in the dimly lit corridor to the back, and had rather a different experience. Service: My husband couldn't get a receipt b/c the counter person turned her attention to another order before finishing with ours, though it wasn't that busy. No one checks after dropping off your order, so it took a while to find a passing staffer to point out that both our steaks were seriously undercooked. (The counter person confirmed she correctly submitted our order to the cook). Nobody offered to bring ketchup with the fries, or passed by timely so they didn't start getting cold first. Food: Not as good as we remembered, maybe because our "medium rare" steaks arrived barely past being seared. It's served already sliced, so when sent back for further cooking, all sides turn brown, making it hard to judge if it tastes only just okay due to the ingredient's quality, or its cooking, or both. By the time it came back, the fries were lukewarm. Atmosphere: The parklet tables didn't look adequately spaced apart. A very noisy large table was seated too close to the only empty one---that and passing traffic would've made conversation impossible. There's no cheery feel at night along the dingy corridor where we sat at the only other available table (the back was closed for a private event). Maybe some better lighting or a crappy little candle on the table? Pre-pandemic, the back used to be nicely lit with a cheery feel. Not sure what it's like now, but we won't be back anytime soon to check.

Yelp
They have a $5 menu! How great is that! And the portions for their $5 menu is legit! I've gotten their falafel shwarma. Is it the best falafel shwarma I've had? No, but at a restaurant like this for the price, it's great! I did think that their mac and cheese was delicious! So cheesy! They are known for their gin-based cocktail drinks. I got their salt and pepper negroni. It's really good -- very strong! They are hefty with their pours and it's also very well balanced. They have a cute patio area in the back. Unfortunately, it's not quite that Covid-safe: seems like they have put up some plastic siding all around the patio to keep in the heat. Unfortunately, that also makes the patio more enclosed and blocks air flow. I might return in the spring, when it's warmer and the plastic is gone.

Carly O.

Yelp
You know why we'll be back? Caroline!!! She was upbeat, personable and nice to say the minimum! Locals only! I grew up eating at Wildflour (location) and I'm so mad at myself for not coming sooner! Outstanding happy hour! Less than a mile from my house! Burger was on point! Schwarma was huge! Loved fries and onion rings! But let me say it again... Caroline! Love her! Easy to order, accommodating, felt like we all belonged! Great patio as well! All Santa Monica natives! We'll be back!

Yelp
I work next door and this place is ALWAYS busy. I decided to try them out and ordered their $5 Burger. HOLY COW! It was delicious! No wonder there is always a line. Anywho, very nice staff, dope food, and lots of dining area. Give it a try. I promise you that you won't regret it.

Yelp
Mind blown! How on earth do you serve $5 shawarmas and burgers in the westside?! Not only that, but the flavors are amazing! Friends live nearby here and decided to take me here. I didn't have much expectations going in. Once I took a bite of the shawarma, holy moly! I'd keep this place hidden, but can't. Must share with the community!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Santa Monica! The prices are unbeatable at $5 for falafel wraps. The wraps are a good portion and the sauces are delicious. The sweet potato fries were cold but they happily brought out another portion when we brought it to their attention. Jalapeno margarita was not my favorite because it was too spicy for my taste but I would try another drink next time.

Yelp
I got the rice bowl with falafel. Warmed me up on a rainy day and was absolutely delicious. Service and ambiance were perfect for what I enjoy - easy, comfortable and not too much interaction. 10/10 would go again!

Yelp
Great happy hour menu. Good food. Good drinks. Can come watch a game and have a nice meal with friends or by yourself. Will definitely come back for happy hour.

Yelp
Really friendly staff. Fun neighborhood bar/eatery atmosphere. The food was good. Prices were reasonable by today's highly inflated standards.

Yelp
We stopped in to grab some drinks and chill out before a nearby dinner spot. Coming from the Northwest Valley, we never know how traffic is gonna be, and we'd always rather show up early than late, so Ashland Hill got our business for a little bit. Super cute and spacious back patio! We ordered at the window up front, chose a seat, and enjoyed the view of the cute doggos and enjoyed the good music while we waited for our reservation time. The ambience and people watching would definitely bring us back if we were in the area!
