"Among the wide-ranging Asian menu of the Barrington Oaks strip mall restaurant, the mapo tofu and spicy fish are the standout dishes along with a soft eggplant with ground pork. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are indoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

"We’ve celebrated a few birthdays at Asia Cafe in North Austin, and we keep finding ourselves going back because of how easy, fun, and delicious everything is. There are a few private rooms to the side if you want a little more privacy, but the dining room is full of giant, circular tables topped with Lazy Susans that you can, in turn, top with giant platters of spicy fish, mango chicken, and mapo tofu. It’s loud enough in here that neighboring tables won’t be able to hear you recount stories of all your adventures when you were younger, but not loud enough that the rest of your table can’t chime in with their own comments. "Asia Cafe in North Austin makes some of our favorite Sichuan food in town. We find ourselves going back here often—the portions are plentiful and the dining room is spacious and great for groups. And whenever they finally shout your number from the giant loudspeaker, it always feels like you’ve just won a big prize. I recently visited Asia Cafe and was extremely disappointed with my experience, both in terms of food portions and service. First, I ordered the same dish for takeout that I had previously enjoyed while dining in. To my dismay, the takeout portion was noticeably smaller, despite the price being the same. This disparity felt like a rip-off, and I left feeling unsatisfied and frustrated. It's unfair to customers to provide less food for the same cost simply because it's a takeout order. And the order is not cheap as well. Additionally, the service was far from friendly. The staff seemed indifferent and unwelcoming, making the overall experience even more unpleasant. Overall, the disappointing portion sizes and unfriendly service have ensured that I won't be returning to Asia Cafe. There are plenty of other places where I can get my money's worth and be treated with respect.

I've been to Asia Cafe several times when I lived closer in Central Austin, but after moving to South Austin, this is the first time I've been after many years. Food was overall good. My family loves Asia Cafe. Portion size was pretty decent, and one thing they have not changed is that compared to many other restaurants, which has increased the price and reduced the portions.

Wide selection of authentic and non authentic Chinese food on the menu. Various dishes were unavailable when we dined in. The house fish fillet with tofu was a little spicy. There are peppercorns in it that numbs your tongue for a few seconds. Salt & pepper squid was a little too salty for me but when you mix with the garlic sauce from the shrimp and scallop dish; it is perfect. The eggplant in garlic sauce is must order dish for me and it was delicious. Eggplants were cooked to the correct texture where it is not too soft and not too hard. Cannot wait to come back to try more dishes!

Huge selection of authentic and non authentic Chinese food. It's very hit or miss depending on what you order. I know what to order so I'm happy to come here. Perhaps it's my American sensibilities but it feels a little dirty and unkept at times.

Asia Cafe off Spicewood in Austin is delicious! I ordered the spicy beef soup which was so good! Authentic Chinese restaurant where guests were speaking Chinese; you know it’s good when the locals eat here. I’ll be back.

This is certainly one of the hidden gems of North Austin. From the outside looking in I'd imagine most people wouldn't think much from this Chinese restaurant, but they would be wrong. This place is my favorite Chinese food anywhere. I've gone here a countless amounts of times and I have always really enjoyed the food. The way this particular restaurant works is as follows. You select the dishes you want from their massive menu. Once each one of your dishes is ready, they will call your order number for you to pick up your food so you can bring it back to your table. For the best Chinese food ever, I know that seems a little strange but I assure you it is well worth it. I frequent this restaurant with my friends and we generally have four dishes we always get: Orange Chicken, Teppan Black Peppered Beef, Salt and Pepper Fish, and Stir Fried Water Spinach. These are all superb dishes. Additionally, my friends and I will order a few new dishes with those base dishes each time so I have tried a good deal of many of the dishes they offer. More often than not the new dishes we order are just as fantastic as the above referenced ones. I can also say there Stir Fried Noodle dish is fantastic as well. It's also important to note that the food here is all reasonably priced and not on the expensive side. If you go here on Friday or Saturday during regular dinner hours; expect this place to be packed. Please note that this restaurant also has around three to four rooms where you and your party can exclusively eat together. Happy hunting for your favorite base dishes.

Google
I'm so in love with Asia Cafe. There is nothing special to note about the atmosphere and that's not what Asia Cafe is about. It's about the delicious Chinese unique dishes and classic dishes they serve. The staff is so helpful and friendly. The food is very fresh, flavorful and prepared with great care. Sometimes they serve special items not on the regular menu so check out the boards where you place your order with the cashier. I strongly recommend any of the dumpling and steamed pork buns to start. Honestly, the food is great and be adventurous. Try a different dish each time, the food is delicious. Go here, give them a try. Their portions are large. I love this place for authentic Chinese dishes 💛

Google
This is by far one of the two best Chinese places in Austin. And by that I mean authentic Chinese food not general tsao or orange chicken. The food here is Schezwan style but their menu is extensive. This place has the largest number of Chinese dishes served by far. They have additional specials and daily specials on the whiteboard that you won't find in the menu. There is always a crowd and a line and you won't ever find this place empty. The best past is that the service speed is really fast and the serving sizes are more than ample. No table service, you line up, order at the counter and then your number gets announced at which point you have to get up and fetch your food. The decor is antiquated but nothing much to complain here. They have a big dining area and smaller rooms as well for group seating. We have tried a lot of dishes here but the pork dishes are really amazing and so the potato with chives. Give it a try and I'm sure you will come back, well only if you like Chinese food. The shopping complex this is in is a little dull though but don't be fooled by that. They have takeout boxes for leftovers.

Yelp
We have consistently ordered take out or dined in almost every week since moving to the 'hood. Always spot on. Great portion sizes. Good for several meals. And so much variety...but you'll end up finding a favorite and they will remember you. :)

Yelp
Visited on a Tuesday lunch right before 12. The place opened at 11 and was getting busier for the lunch hour by the time I was finishing up my meal. The place is comfortable to be in and feels big and bright with the high ceiling and the windows. Asia Cafe is more of a self-serve-style restaurant. Order at the counter, pay for the meal, sit yourselves then leave the receipt on the table for the server to bring up the dishes. There's a utensil and to-go box station, as well as a cooler bucket of ice at the water station. There's a tablet at the counter to join the rewards program, and I do very much appreciate a self-serve-style restaurant not popping up a tip page. I assume the person taking the order was the owner, who was very very friendly. Offered to help with pictures and offered me a large drink cup for me to bring the broth from my dish home to make another meal out of. We ordered the Spicy Beef Filet, upon ordering, since we were ordering in Mandarin, the owner (I assume she is the owner) asked to confirm if we wanted it Chinese style. She explained that the sauce/soup of the American-style spicy beef would be thicker, unlike the broth/soup for Chinese style as we got. The beef was SO SO tender. They use bean sprouts as the veg at the bottom of the dish. The flavor is very good but could be spicier for my taste. Pan-fried tofu is also a spicy dish, with crispy tofu mixed with some veggies with a generous amount of chili flakes. Onion, red, and green pepper are standard, and I was pleasantly surprised to find baby corn and asparagus in the dish! Truly enjoyed how crispy and hard the outsides of the tofu were, and because they are still pieces of good sizes, the insides were still hot and soft, not dry at all. Overall a very enjoyable lunch, and I could feel the restaurant is fairly popular with the number of people eating on a weekday lunch. I will say the size of the beef dish is a tad smaller than that I would get from my usual Chinese place. However, the bill came out to $36.74 for two big dishes with two generous (tall like a mountain!) bowls of rice, which is a very friendly price to eat out!

Yelp
It's the worst Chinese restaurant in Austin. Worst service, the cashier and her son, or maybe her husband, keep chatting and ignore customers. I happen to know Chinese, and I know they were just gossiping. The food I ordered, beef noodle, does not feel hygiene, as my stomach got upset afterwards.

Mark F.

Yelp
Ordered the lunch special of chicken and vegetables with rice. Also ordered a side of fried pork dumplings. Both were excellent but the chicken and vegetables in the white sauce really stood out. I initially was going to get the chicken with asparagus but thought I might want the chicken with the mushrooms and the nice lady at the counter said why not get the chicken and vegetables cuz it has both! The sauce was very mild and very tasty at the same time. Even though it's a lunch special it was enough for both of us along with the pork dumplings. Can't say enough good things about this place. They always deliver such high quality meals and their menu is extremely varied.

Yelp
We got there at 5.25 and waited 15 minutes and no one paid us any attention. They have private rooms where the wait staff worked. Everyone in the main dining area was totally ignored including a big table behind us who were also ignored. They got there before us. No memu, no water no greeting NOTHING!

Vizslas D.

Yelp
This place I assume is authentic Asian. There are no signs whether or not to sit yourself and when we did sit for almost 10 minutes before walking to the front to ask if we should order at counter. Yes, and no waiters. The food was mostly really good with large portions. The shrimp fried rice was a little weird. It was white? And not many shrimp in this dish. The soup bowls could feed a family of 8! The biggest problem was I didn't see any ice anywhere. The water and tea were room temp and that might be a little too authentic!

Yelp
Looked up this little restaurant after a doctor's appointment and decided to give it a try. Location is in a small shopping area that wasn't crowded, that had plenty of parking, easy access to the establishment. The restaurant was roomy, tables only, no booths. They hand you a menu and you order and pay for your food first. Asian cafe had a pretty good selection of dishes, appetizers, soups, and drinks. I ordered the beef broccoli and shared an egg drop soup and my spouse ordered the Chong Chin chicken containing plenty of peppercorns and Szechuan peppers. We did not have to wait long for our order. Our food arrived neatly displayed in the plates along with a good size bowl of egg drop soup. Everything was fresh, hot, and the flavors were out of this world. You could taste the ginger, garlic, lemon grass, and the rest of the delicious spices combining them all to deliver quite the punches and explosions of flavor. The portions were large and filling. My beef broccoli tasted great. The meat was very tender, and served in a brown sauce. Very flavorful. I could taste the fresh spices in the dish. Very authentic. I also got to eat some of the Chon Chin dish which consisted of tiny, crispy, fried pieces of chicken mixed in with great tasting flavors. The chicken was crispy, and juicy. It was spicy as we wanted it to be. It had peanuts that were roasted just right with thin, tiny slivers of roasted fresh ginger. Absolutely delicious. At times you could get the great taste of lemon grass and garlic. The egg drop soup was so comforting and just reminded me of the holidays for some reason. The food was the undeniably the best tasting Asian food we have had. The way they blended in their ingredients was perfect. The staff was friendly and attentive. we could not have asked for better tasting Asian food. Definitely would recommend this establishment to you all.

Yelp
I used to love this place! It's terrible now! What's happened?? All of the dishes were so bad, we could not eat them! Terrible. We could cook better

Yelp
If I can pick "no star", I will! We have been long time customers for the past 10, 15 years. However, our last experience was really disappointing! Our party of 7 visited the cafe on a Saturday night at 8pm. We ordered around $120 dishes. They highly recommended a steam fish (cost $50) which we ordered. It came to us cold (steam fish being cold is ridiculous, definitely not authentic, left-over, not fresh). Our dishes came at 8:20 pm, and 10 minutes later, the cashier hurried us to leave 3 times. So, our party of 7 need to pack up and go at 8:45 pm. The 9 pm closing time is a joke.

Nick S.

Yelp
A more traditional Chinese restaurant! I highly recommend this place! It can get busy on the weekends. I'm not sure if they take reservations.

Yelp
We've been dining at Asia Cafe for years but I couldn't bring myself to leave a review because normally I would order 3-4 amazing dishes with 1 okay one. So, after years of experimenting and asking others what they normally order at Asia Cafe, I finally found the perfect balance and meal combination for my family. I really think with the price, portion, and their willingness to adjust and customize spice/salt level, they deserve this 5-star review. Let me just list all the items I would always re-order in a heartbeat: - Honey walnut Shrimp 蜂蜜核桃蝦 - Fish & Vegetables in White Sauce 鮮溜魚片(veggies inside were red bell pepper, bamboo, black fungus) - Shrimp & Fish w/Special Sauce 鮮溜雙丁 (had tomato) - House Fish Fillet w/Tofu (contains Peanuts)豆花魚片 (this is good as is, but with kids we normally order it not-spicy, so good my daughter would stop us from eating so she can eat more lol) - Crispy Duck (Bone-in) 香酥鴨 (great if you're dining in, otherwise it'd be a little cold and not as crispy). - Stewed Beef Flank w/Radish 牛腩煲 this dish is spicy, cannot be adjusted, mostly great, sometimes a little too salty. - Stir Fried Pork Intestines w/Tofu 豆花肥肠 (spicy dish for us parents, yum). -Yang Chow Fried Rice (Inclues Chicken, Pork, and Shrimp) 揚州炒飯 (to fill up those kids and make them quiet) Szechuan Style Pork Intestines and pork blood 四川肠旺 - Shredded beef w/Chili 小椒牛肉 (so good, as is, or as not spicy). ALL the stir-fry veggies. so good. Items I think are good but not first choice for my family: - Taiwanese Style Fried Crispy Chicken Fillet 鹽酥雞排 (mostly because we are Taiwanese and because I am a pretty good cook as well haha) (meat is a little dry for our taste but still good to change things up). -Pork w/Dry Bean Curd 香干肉丝 -Shredded Pork w/Sliced Baby Bamboo Shoots 辣味香笋肉丝 can be made not spicy. - Stir Fried Flat Rice Noodle w/Beef 干炒牛河 (probably my fault as I ordered this to-go, might have been on the great list if I dined in). As you can probably see, we love their food and have tried many dishes. Will continue to do so, and here is a huge shout-out to the chef and staff working there: "We love you!" 愛你們 辛苦了!

Sam V.

Yelp
Love the Red Pepper Tofu! It's our favorite . The eggplant is also great for vegetarians. The veggie fried rice is so so . Could be tastier

Nanisi W.

Yelp
Food was so good after a long day in the lake. The customer service was weird and lacking. You kind of have to do everything yourself which is fine but that wasn't very clear. I think the food made up for the lack which is why i give it three stars. I think this is a to go only spot from now on.

Jill S.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing! It is the best Chinese food in Austin hands down. I would suggest to anyone.

Kaitlin O.

Yelp
Our family has been coming here for many years for delicious Chinese food. Due to covid, they are doing takeout and delivery only. I recommend placing your order over the phone so your food will be ready to pick up once you head over. Family favorites of ours include the spicy fish fillet (#48), pork w/ dry bean curd (#111), and the Singapore fried rice noodles (#154). Portion sizes are large and more family-style so you can definitely order 1 less dish than the number of people you have and still have leftovers!

John C.

Yelp
The customer service experience at Asia Cafe was incredibly disappointing. I placed an order for takeout on Christmas and was initially told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I drove quite a distance to pick it up, but upon arrival, they informed me it would take another 20 minutes. Returning after 20 minutes, I was told to wait an additional 20 minutes. It's crucial for businesses to be honest about their capabilities. The food we eventually received was cold and tasted poorly. Despite these issues, they refused to offer any discounts or refunds. I strongly advise considering another dining option. It's simply not worth your time, money, or energy given such a disappointing experience.

Calvin L.

Yelp
The service is good, very open environment. The food is just way too salty I couldn't eat much

Amy V.

Yelp
Ordered the hotpot fish and found a rubber band inside the dish. will never come to this place again. Disgusting.

Arale P.

Yelp
Actually I feel this place has the best Chinese cuisine in Austin. We ordered Fish, pork liver and fried rice. All very good taste. It's just the fish is kinda small and expensive. The disappointing part is the service. The person who took the order was very cold

Natalie K.

Yelp
Hubby and I were all set to try some local Chinese delivery place tonight, based on a menu hanging on our front door knob from earlier, but, unfortunately (or fortunately, as it turns out!), they were randomly closed tonight, so, we went with Asia Cafe, and we are super-glad that we did! This is certainly not your hum-drum neighborhood Chinese. This is that times ten! Truly interesting and legitimate! Did we get adventurous in our choices? Not really, but what we had was vastly superior to our usual, and that definitely encourages us to get more interesting in our next foray into Chinese delivery at Asia Cafe! Wonton Soup - When I get wonton soup, I usually pull out all of the dumplings first to mainline, and I dump the majority of the broth. Not this time! This soup was DELISH! The wontons were delightful and perfectly-sized, and the broth had yummy bok choy and onions, as well as a perfectly umami flavor that kept me coming back for more. The flavor was actually reminiscent of boiled peanuts to me, in a weird and awesome way. I'll reorder this FO SHOW! Yang Chow Fried Rice - This is your typical comfort food combo fried rice, but just better! I can't identify why. Cleaner and more defined, if that makes any sense! The portion was HUGE, so I still have about three-fourths of it to eat for lunch! Yay! Fried Egg Rolls - These were our least favorite thing, which is a bummer because the reviews had us looking forward to it! They had definitely been sitting out for a bit, but we TOTALLY get that with this whole pandemic thing, so zero judgement there! House Dry Wok Beef - This was my husband's choice, and he was THOROUGHLY impressed! He said that this is the Chinese version of gumbo or chili for him! Just belly-warming goodness! The beef was beyond-tender, the veggies were beyond-fresh, and it had just the right amount of heat! That tongue-numbing spice that they add is oddly addictive, too! Mixed with the white rice made this dish a TRUE winner! Definitely give Asia Cafe a look when you're next in the mood for some utterly exceptional Chinese delivery! Y'all honestly won't be disappointed!

Lisa O.

Yelp
I've been to Asia Cafe on and off for the last 13 years. I'm kind of surprised that they were voted one of the top Chinese restaurants in America. Perhaps the standards are lower in Texas because they definitely lag behind Chinatown San Francisco, Chinatown Chicago, Monterey Park in L.A., ... anywhere but here. I appreciated that their honey walnut shrimp was gluten free and all of their boba drinks are dairy free. But their taro boba and honey walnut shrimp were both way too sweet, even for someone with a sweet tooth! Yuck.

Katelin P.

Yelp
The service is great. The portions are big and all of the employees are super kind. When we are craving Chinese style cuisine we come here

Kian N.

Yelp
We ordered some food to go and it was awful. Chicken was not fresh food was oily . I ended up having a stomach ache after.

Gina L.

Yelp
Not good but also not terrible? It was really hot inside the restaurant, I'm not sure if the AC was broken or if that's just how they roll. Everything is family style but the ordering was a little confusing because some tables were brought their food and some had to go pick it up. Not a big deal but just confusing. Affordable as far as pricing goes. They were really busy so be patient.

Ben P.

Yelp
Authentic Asian food Consistently good food friendly staff Lunch time super busy Big tables Yea they speak English to varying degrees

Lan Anh V.

Yelp
Asia Cafe is a hole-in-the-wall, no-frills Chinese food staple. Their Szechuan food is authentic. The spicy fish fillet is probably one of their most popular items and one I would recommend. We also really enjoyed the green beans; they have just the right amount of bite to them and are well seasoned. My partner loved the Chong chin chicken. It has a good balance of Szechuan peppercorns that wasn't too overpowering. I have tried their three cup chicken before, and it was alright. It didn't stand out too much for me, but if you love garlic and ginger, that might be a good dish to try. You order at the counter and pick up your own food when they call out your number, so there is no table-side wait service. Utensils/napkins are self-serve. Other things to note: they don't give you water cups for ice water, they only sell water bottles. If you end up dining in and need to take anything to go, you can get your own to-go containers, but if you need a bag, they informed us it was a 10 cent charge.

Mark A.

Yelp
Great food, quick service, reasonable prices. We stopped for lunch on a recommendation and were game to try it out; it's next to (part of?) a store next door that sells asian items (they were closed when I went). The restaurant is a wide open space with a bunch of square and larger round tables, and a side of the room with a more private dining "rooms". They have a nice selection of different types of dishes, from vegetables, some vegetarian, and all of the standard meats. I got the spicy fish, and was happy that it was flavorful, somewhat spicy but really focused on the flavor rather than being hot. The fish is slightly battered and fried, and comes with rice and lots of veggies; easily sized for 2+ meals, which you can take to go if needed. No frills, tasty, good food!

Glenn R.

Yelp
This was a favorite place several years ago but has suffered quite a bit since the pandemic. Menu prices have gone up 40% while portion sizes and quality have gone down similarly. They used to offer points which could be exchanged for dishes for repeat customers but now you can get some greasy mediocre egg rolls. The restaurant was never fancy but used to provide quality Chinese food, some of it quite authentic, for reasonable prices. They should at least consider buying smaller serving ware so that that don't have to bring out the food on half-empty serving plates. The final straw were the drinks. No table water is available and the only water to buy is a small bottle of purified water for a dollar. Spring water? OK, but a dollar for glorified tap water is sad.

Lauren P.

Yelp
The Kung Pao chicken is probably the best I've had in a long time, and I love the amount of peanuts they top it with! I've only ordered to go. This last time I didn't have rice in my bag and was able to notice before I got to my car. The website prices aren't up to date, and I'm glad I turned around to get the side of rice before getting home. The food was amazing and we'll keep coming back!

E L.

Yelp
My son's favorite restaurant of all time. His favorite is chicken broccoli and spicy fish fillet.

Chris T.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for authentic Chinese food in Austin. This is a no thrills restaurant in a strip mall. You order at the counter and they call our your number when you order is ready. The silverware, water, ice bucket, and cups are off to the side partly behind counter to order food. There bathrooms are off to the side if the kitchen. The portions are generous. The rice comes in a bucket to share with all at the table. I love their twice cooked pork belly. The cumin beef is delicious, but you have to love cumin. It packs a punch of cumin. All the dishes with Sichuan peppercorns are delicious. Tip: this is authentic Chinese food, don't order US Chinese dishes like Kung Pao or General Tso. They have it, but get the real Chinese food.

Shirley B.

Yelp
Located in a strip mall, Asia Cafe is just off Hwy 183 and Spicewood Springs Road. Food: There are a decent number of Chinese food options on the menu, and various menu boards behind the counter. The mapo tofu was not too oily, and had a decent amount of spice and ground pork. Pea shoots were fresh and stir fried with garlic slices. Both entrees served with a bowl of white rice. Self service water and tea station, and ice is provided. Service: Friendly, and you're greeted as you enter. Food comes out quickly, but to be fair, we were there at 2:30pm and one of three parties eating. Cost: $30 after tax for the tofu and pea shoots, which is pretty pricey in my book. Overall: Might go back, but there's plenty of other places to try with equally fresh food considering the price point. Parking lot right outside, but spots can be hard to come by as there are lots of other eateries and shops in the same strip mall. They take credit cards.

Philip C.

Yelp
( I cannot award any 5 star reviews unless I experience service or eat at the actual restaurant) The battle of Chinese take out is an ongoing feud. People forget that "Chinese Food" can encompass several subcultures that simply may not be on your palate. For example Sichuan versus Cantonese, and food with roots in Singapore/Taiwan. I also preface this review based on the fact that this is comparing Asia Cafe with other Fast To go style Chinese food,..not upscale presentation such as Jade, Chinatown, or Mr.Chow. Since I feel everyone has a different preference on LoMein/Chowmein/ as well as Fried Rice and Egg rolls. I am going to compare two dishes that should be prepared at the same standard with the same ingredients at any Authentic Chines to go spot. I am of course talking about Mapo Tofu, and Asian Eggplant with Ground Pork. These two dishes will allow me to baseline technique, freshness, and flavors. Asian Eggplant with pork was simply heaven. The perfect healthy yet slightly greasy hybrid of A vegetable and pork. The cook on the eggplant and preparation removed all the sour after bite of the eggplant. The pork flavor was married with the sweet sauce to create this harmonic dish. On a rainy day, order this and rice and be happy. Mapo Tofu is effortlessly good. Perhaps one of the best in this city, this version lacks the fermented black beans, or it's minimal here. The sauce is perfect in consistency. I highly recommend modifying the spice if you're a wuss like me, and can handle the 5 peppers associated with the chili flakes. Over a trial of 4 times each version was consistent with the last. In addition, the tofu is nice and silky but maintained its shape. Both options are ways to eat vegetables and have the taste behind it. In general I can speak that the staff is friendly and accommodating. They have always told me that if I can tell them what is in something they'll do it for me. Good food, Good People. Consistent.

Dustin C.

Yelp
Sooo good! Start with the spicy fish and spicy wontons. This place is a hidden gem. If you know then you know!

Catheline H.

Yelp
I love the generous portion and the Sichuan spice is on point. We normally order a dish of water boiled fish and soft tofu. Very flavorful and a great to go option.

Steve P.

Yelp
Great food! It's probably authentic. I don't know. But I know it's good. I usually bring my own "to go" containers and prep some lunches. The last time I was there I saw someone else doing the same.

Billy D.

Yelp
I have had food from Asia Cafe in the past and it was always good. This the story: Order: Singapore Style Noodles - out of 10 I'd give it a 2 Kung Pao Chicken - out of 10 I'd give it a 4 Shrimp and Scallop in Garlic Sauce - out of 10 I'd give it a 1 Vegetable Spring Roll - out of 10 I'd give it a 2 Singapore Noodles - thrown together without any care, covered in so much pepper that it colored the noodles red. Almost nothing but noodles in the dish. Kung Pao Chicken - commons standard dish in any Chinese restaurant and they didn't even do this well. Shrimp and Scallop in Garlic Sauce - confusing...this arrived sitting in a red colored oily sauce that took over anything else. To date I have never had any "garlic sauce" dish this color or this taste and so nasty. There was exactly one scallop in the dish. Vegetable Spring Roll - had to mess this up but they did. Fry was adequate but there didn't seem to be any visible ingredients inside. Just dough. I'm sure others have had great experiences there, and the messaging is that it is "authentic" which I don't know what that means. Lived in NY and SF for many years, Austin for 9 years, and to date - worst dining experience be it Chinese or any other cuisine.

Yelp
Please get the Spicy Fish dish! It is a self serve restaurant so you order up at the front and help yourself to water, silverware, and dishes. You get a number for your order and when it is ready they will call it through the mic and you just go up and pick it up. It is a family-style restaurant so the portions are really big (hence the price) one dish is definitely enough to share with someone. The place doesn't look that fancy from the outside or even inside but there's definitely a lot of seating available and the food is fantastic! Whatever I ordered I enjoyed all of it. A lot of my friends enjoyed the Eggplant dish but it was a little too sweet for me. If you want to to-go your food and bag it up then it does cost 10cents to get a plastic bag. (This is probably bc Austin it self does not use plastic bags) PLEASE COME HERE IF YOU'RE IN AUSTIN!

Yelp
Asia cafe provide lots of choices on dishes, no matter you want American Chinese or more traditional Chinese. The price is pretty decent considering the portion size and the flavor. The flavor of different dishes are also quite balanced, not as greasy as some of the Szechuan/Hunan specialized Chinese restaurants I tried. The delivery was also very fast on Saturday at noon.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Austin. Very authentic. We have enjoyed them for years. Honey walnut shrimp, garlic green beans and Taiwanese rice noodles are our favs.

Yelp
Good options including some authentic Chinese dishes Strengths: extensive menu including some excellent authentic Chinese dishes. Reasonable prices. Fast takeout. Avoid the "faux Chinese" dishes like orange chicken and beef & broccoli. If you order authentic Chinese dishes, you'll be pleased. Weaknesses: Ambiance, bathrooms Food: We love the food, but we know what to order. Friends from China introduced us to Asia Café and helped us navigate the menu. Favorite dishes- 1. Twice cooked pork belly with jalapeños, 2. Dry wok beef, 3. Cumin beef, 4. Most of Szechuan dishes with the numbing peppercorn (called "ma"). Service: Order at the counter. You'll get a number. When the number is called, pick up your food. Overall cleanliness: average Bathroom cleanliness: below average Ambiance: mix of Beijing inexpensive public diner and American strip mall. In other words, the ambiance is rough Misc: 1. Credit cards are accepted. 2. HVAC can be random. In the summer, the temperature can be HOT inside.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place out for years, but the restaurant always seemed packed (pre pandemic times of course) or the phone line was too busy when I tried to call for takeout. I finally gave them a shot, and I have to say I quite liked what my husband and I ordered. First, about the restaurant itself. It appears to be strictly pickup only and no indoor dining (all the chairs were stacked up and everything was pushed up against the walls). Hand sanitizer is located at the entrance, the floor was marked with social distance stickers, and all staff were wearing masks. I'm thankful for a restaurant that follows strict guidelines for the safety of its staff and customers especially during pandemic times. The food itself: my husband and I ordered the Szechuan Style Pork Intestines and Pork Blood, Szechuan Duck (bone in), Mapo Tofu with Ground Pork, and Zhong Dumplings. Upon picking up our order, the staff was impressed with how authentic our order was (we usually try to order similar dishes like these when given the option since we're big fans of Szechuan cuisine). The Mapo Tofu was not the best I've had in Austin- it was still good but I've had more flavorful Mapo Tofu dishes that were more a sucker punch to my taste buds. I'm a big fan of Mapo Tofu, and I try to order it anytime I see it on a menu. There was a very very slight buzz and bit of heat, so if your spice tolerance level is on the lower side then this should be fine for you (I personally really like pretty spicy food so I was hoping for a lot more heat and this was on the mild side for me). The dumplings were also okay, the flavors didn't stand out to me. The winners though were the Szechuan Style Pork Intestines and Pork Blood and Szechuan Duck! The Pork Intestines were packed with flavor and very tender. It always impresses us when a place can cook intestines just right, for many places often overcook them and the texture turns out pretty rubbery. Asia cafe is one of the very few places in town that nailed cooking the intestines right, so order from them if you're on the search. The Szechuan Duck had deliciously crispy skin and really good flavor. Overall, from our order there were dishes that were just good and others that were impressive. Will order from them again and would like to try more dishes.

Yelp
It was just ok. I used to really like this place but today was very lackluster. We ordered pot stickers, egg drop soup, spicy fish, eggplant with pork, Mongolian lamb, crispy duck and mapo tofu. -The duck was super duper gamey and oily - yuck! -The mapo tofu was bland and just a blomb of mush. I expected more flavor. -The egg drop soup was fine. Nothing special and it was $8. Not worth it. -the spicy fish was just ok. It was not exceptional in any way nor was it very spicy. -the eggplant was fine. Nothing bad but just ok. -The Mongolian lamb was the best thing we ate and it was ok. Maybe we just ordered the wrong stuff but it was just not good.

Yelp
I really had high hopes but overall we actually ended up walking out. The wonton soups noodles were doughy and the fried rice was mediocre at best. What really pushed it over the edge was that there was no free water and you basically served yourself. I just don't understand why there are so many tables if it's basically a takeout restaurant?

Yelp
I've been eating here for the past 15 years and never once had a bad dish. The Singapore noodles, all the dumplings, the Dan Dan noodles all hit the mark. The chicken and pork fried rice are both excellent, with no food coloring like you sometimes see in fried rice. I'm heading in today to get the maypo tofu and eggplant with ground pork. I've never had either of those dishes but I know how they are made and don't expect to be disappointed. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is, they removed my favorite dish (Beef with bamboo shoots) from the menu. It was epic, and spicy. It's also not a dish that is easy to Google for, so I asked them a few years back how it was made. They have (had?) an Asian grocery right next door that I think they owned, and I got the correct fermented bean paste, so now I make a very close approximation of the dish whenever I want. But sometimes I just don't want to cook. PLEASE bring back the beef with bamboo and I will add the 5th star.

Yelp
I was craving pork dumpling soup like what they serve at First Chinese BBQ. However, I thought I'd give Asia Cafe a try since it was a much closer drive. I like the abundance of baby bok choy included with the wonton soup, however, the broth was too dark and smoky in flavor. The wonton wrappers were thick and I didn't like the wonton soup - would not order again. My daughter like the fried dumplings. From all the photos posted, it appears stir fry dishes are a better bet here. We arrived at 11:45 am and beat the lunch rush. Our food came out quickly, within 5 minutes after ordering. I didn't mind ordering at the counter then picking up my food and carrying it to the table since it was just the two of us. For a large group though, that ''counter pickup' concept could be odd since everyone gets their food at different times. The silverware, water, tea, napkins, cups area was congested. Need to reorganize the layout so traffic pattern is better these items.

Yelp
Not much on ambience, but consistent quality dishes, wide variety, and speedy service!
