How to Spend a Food-Filled Weekend in California’s Mount Shasta | Eater SF

"A 13-year-old Thai barbecue operation notable for a streetside smoker on North Weed Boulevard, mixing flavors such as pork spare ribs with papaya salad. The owner doubles as chef, cashier, and menu guide, helping first-timers pick orders. The mixed plate is an easy, shareable hit: grill-charred brisket, pork, and a smoked chicken leg served alongside papaya salad. It’s a no-frills environment with Thai music and some tables for diners. Note: the website still mentions an October 2024 vacation until "further notice," so a quick phone call during business hours can confirm current status." - Dianne de Guzman

This place is a little hole in the wall. You wouldn't even notice it if it weren't for the mouthwatering aroma of his outdoor BBQ pit! It is owner operated. He is super friendly with a genuine smile. The service is impeccable. And, his food is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! I love it.

Heidi Scanlan

Google
Brisket and rice plate was delicious. My husband took a calculated risk and ordered the smoked corndogs and I would not encourage others to do that (see pics below) the dumplings were pretty good as well. The sauce has a bit of a kick to it so order with it on the side if you’re feeding kids or spice adverse adults. It was peculiar watching the owner turn away another family with darker skin than ours due to being “so busy and having a very long wait” and then proceed to serve others as they came in. I don’t know what to make of this.

Google
Thomas was amazing. Food was even better. Honestly, I’ve had a lot of BBQ, and this was genuinely some of the best. Super fun with the Asian flair to it. Be a kind, good human, and he will treat you right. Expect to pay restaurant prices, but you WILL NOT REGRET getting that BBQ. So good. Thanks man.

Google
Well, for over $60 for 2 dinners one would think it was going to be great. Not great. Weird smoked meat and vegetables dish. The pork ribs were too spicy. We will not be back

Google
Great place! We stopped in during a road trip down the coast. We called him at 7:50 saying we'd be there in 5 minutes and he kept the shop open waiting for us. Great food and even better service. 10/10 recommend.

Google
This was the best bbq I’ve ever eaten. Actually I’ve never had food that tastes quite like this. My fiancé and I stopped here because we saw the smoker going outside and it exceeded any expectation we had. Amazing service from the owner who helped us pick from the menu (we got the spare ribs and rice) and also taught us how to eat sticky rice. :) All around amazing experience and incredible food. 10/10!!

Carlos Rodriguez

Google
This might actually be the best BBQ spot ever made. Every meat has a strong smokey flavor and the cook is very polite and generous. The special spicy sauce they have is outstanding. I would highly recommend the carnitas they have.

Google
I grew up in the south and worked a BBQ pit in college. I have travelled throughout the south, literally cataloging bbq shacks and stands. I know bbq. This is probably the best bbq I have ever had. Truly out of this world. Moreover, the owner is wonderful. I see some reviews have called him “rude.” Could not be farther from the truth. He is passionate about his craft (and straight to the point about getting you fed). Get the pork spareribs, sticky rice, and a Coca Cola. Truly remarkable.

Blake B.

Yelp
To the people who gave this establishment a poor rating: They have the best sauce and no one has ever complained. The owner insisted he feed us a bite of the food and give him a thumbs up or thumbs down before accepting our orders. What more needs to be said?

Yelp
I'm not one to knock another man down. But here goes my review. When ordering the pork belly I didn't expect something that looked like pulled pork with a bunch of bar be que sauce all mixed in with it. The smoked chicken was also that way. After telling him that I didnt expect pulled chicken or pork belly. The thing about the experience was very disappointing. Because. Great smoked meats don't need sauce!!! No napkins were given and the rice and meat combo was nothing at all to brag about. 3 little rice and meat plates with drinks cost 80 dollars. The size of the plates are the same size of mini plate at my local Hawaiian restaurant. All I can say is if you ask your customer how was it? If they bring up an issue that were relevant to the topic. Do something to try to make it right. Don't just say that everyone loves the sauce. My point was. The menu never mentioned that the meat will be pulled and covered with this sauce. Smoked meats when done right. Don't need it! The ribs were good. Luckily he didn't smear it with that sauce. His one on one with the customer and doing something to make it right. Will be there downfall if not addressed immediately.

Yelp
Ordered the pork ribs and brisket over white rice. The meat is tender, interesting flavor seasoning but still delicious. I love Lao bbq. I wish the entire menu was available so we couldve tried the beef ribs. Maybe next time!
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Smoky and with a nice crust. Only thing that makes the BBQ Asian American is the slightly sweet sauce. Delicious. I never knew I wanted rice with BBQ but it was a win. You can watch the smoker and grill going right in front of the store

Joe J.

Yelp
Out of desperation on a road trip. Stumbled upon this place. Glad we took a chance on this little place. Had the 4 BBQ pork ribs. Great char flavor and unique Asian hints in the seasoning.

Yelp
This was really good! Small place and it looks like the owner runs the whole thing, but if you like bbq it is a definite stop!
google avatar

Vincent D.

Yelp
The sauce is the boss at this restaurant! The meat was always cooked exceptionally & the owner is very friendly & recommends what's good to order for the day. My favorite was the Beef Tri-Tip steak with a Thai boba tea
google avatar

Mardell M.

Yelp
Delicious!! We had the #18 beef, pork and Chicken with rice. So fresh and fast. The sauce for the rice was fantastic!! Worthy of 10 stars if I could!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Food was amazing. #18 mix plate pork beef chicken and #11 pho were both so good. Impressive that it is a one man show running the whole thing
google avatar

Terry P.

Yelp
The food is amazing!!! Follow the rules. Don't be disrespectful. Do not touch the door, do not go inside the restaurant. Wait and you'll be attended to. Everything here is worth it. Get the mixed plate, you won't be disappointed! Definitely will be coming back every chance I get.
google avatar

Torben Y.

Yelp
What an amazing experience! Great food, and a really nice owner who's obviously passionate about BBQ! What a great surprise to stumble upon.

Yelp
Great Tri-Tip!!!Small place a bit of wait for food, but well worth it. Also call ahead save some time.

Yelp
Stopped on Weed just to get this BBQ. Super excited. Pulled in and was told we needed to sanitize our hands before entering. Ok Looked at the menu and it looked fabulous! We ordered 2 combo plates with rice and pork dumplings. Cranky man said dumplings take a long time. That's ok, we're not in a hurry. Order was placed and paid and we were told to go outside. Too crowded inside for our 4 people. Ok! Got ourselves drinks from our cooler and got an outside table. Went to pick up our food and a guy at the inside table said to make sure to try the hot sauce so we asked for extra. Owner said no! You already got some.... Ok Started eating our meal and owner asked if everything was ok. Yup! He asked if we wanted more hot sauce..... um, ya!!! He came out with a smile, gave us tons of hot sauce and extra napkins. Bbq was fantastic, rice was dry. You'd think it would be perfect, right? So 4 stars for food, 3 service and 3 atmosphere since we were forced to eat outside.

Samuel M.

Yelp
Very friendly chef, wide selection, very rare to get high quality Asian barbecue in the middle of nowhere!

Näda S.

Yelp
Go out of your way to meet Thomas and get you some REAL BBQ made with love! Six menu items including the special that day which was Beef Rib Pho.
google avatar

Cayli F.

Yelp
Food is fire! had the tri tip with rice. Would recommend anything the owner tell you is good.

Aaron R.

Yelp
Best service and food. BBQ was top notch. Owner took his time in preparation and it was well worth the wait. Will definitely go back

Yelp
This place rocks!!! So strange to find an Asian restaurant in Weed, Ca. Even stranger to find smoked bbq meats and an offering of Thai food. End result is pure deliciousness. Little gem tucked at an intersection with a kick ass view of Mt Shasta. Owner is pretty dang cool, he is a one man team. Highly recommend!

David E.

Yelp
I live in the area and I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never stopped at this place before Sunday. I ordered the brisket sandwich And I have to say that could just be the best sandwich I've ever eaten.

Hannah B.

Yelp
This place rocks!!! Such good food and great service. What a gem to find on a road trip!

Yelp
I never even been here. Looks like my account got hacked. Five stars for the trouble.

Yelp
Perfect. Everything about it was perfect. Eveything down to the last minute detail. I love Weed, California

Yelp
This BBQ was sooooo good !! Pricey but delicious Our total came out to $130 & we got 6 Thai Teas (we drink so much Thai Tea, this was the best ) 2 pork belly w/ rice. 2 Pork ribs w/ rice. And 1 mixed plate w/ rice. My son got one of the pork ribs & he didn't eat it because the sauce was too spicy for him but I could hardly take spice & I didn't mind it ! I got the mixed w/ rice & man, . We eat a lot of BBQ and this was one of the best we've had. There is no indoor seating, just outdoors. We brought one of the pork belly ones home and it was still delicious. The staff is so sweet. We are traveling the US in our RV & man, I'm going here again before traveling again.

Yelp
I've done the drive from the Bay Area, California to Oregon many times and usually disappointed with the food along the way especially in Redding but I am so glad I decided to stop here! On one of the signs it says something about please understand they are not a fast food restaurant which is true. From the time I got there, waited to order and walked out with my food was 30 minutes but definitely worth the wait. Got half rack pork ribs and these are the best ribs I've had in recent memory! They tasted exactly how I was hoping they would. The meat was cooked perfectly and plenty of flavor. I appreciate how they place the rice in a separate foil so it doesn't get soggy from the rib sauce. Even the rice was just perfect. I got there maybe an hour before closing and they had run out of the beef ribs which I'd like to try another time. Definitely will be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely the most delicious BBQ I've had in California -- and this is a very big state!

Yelp
Old gas station converted into a restaurant. Very crowded inside with the owners supplies but enough room for about 14 people. We decided to eat in. The smell of the food makes your mouth water, then you taste it and it is a flavor explosion. My wife and I ordered the same thing. A combo plate of chicken, pork, and beef with rice. Nice portion size and all the meat was covered in the same sweet/spicy sauce. If you don't like spicy, order your sauce on the side. We had enough left over for lunch tomorrow! Briefly talked with the owner and it is clear he takes pride in his smoker and the food he creates. Wouldn't hesitate to return next time we are in town.

Yelp
Today - be prepared to wait. No line, but made to order with limited staff. 6 inch Chicken Sandwich with mayo, onion and cheese $15.00. No sides, Just the sandwich. Steak burrito *decent meal -minus filler* $15.00 I like that they offer Thai boba tea $6.50 Pricey, but worth a shot if you can't stomach fast food on your trip on Highway 5 *slim pickin's this far up*

Yelp
Weed, what an interesting town for Lao food. We saw that there were 3 different lao restaurants in a town of about 3k and that really blew my mind. Unfortunately or fortunately, this place was the only one open during our visit and we were very eager to try the food. The meat is cooked out front and you can see the smoke and smell the meat from the bbq. It is run by a man and his wife (I think) who are both Lao and very friendly... I started my convo in Lao but quickly had to switch to English because my Lao is very broken and we all had a good laugh. We ordered the number 3 (pork) and number 7 (beef). The menu is quite big but it really is just the one pork and beef option available. 4/5 - Pork with side of rice and sauce 4/5 - beef with side of rice and sauce Both were great smoky flavor a maybe a tad dry but the sauce added a little kick. Very tasty and worth the wait Pleasantly surprised they were served in a biodegradable to-go container. Definitely a great concept combining Lao spices with a twist to bbq.

Yelp
A must for those passing through on I-5. This is a mixed of authentic Asian cooking, healthy eats and something for everyone (including burritos!!!). Food is slow cooking on the BBQ outside that makes for a good meal on a long road trip. For high quality, slow cooked food, and a family run business, the service is exceptionally attentive and efficient. We got Thai iced teas, Thai salads, ribs for later, a burrito and tri tip sandwiches. All were exceptional and nothing disappointed. Next time I hope our family can stay a bit and enjoy pho.

Yelp
I love this place the owner is a real stand up guy and the food is Amazing!! A must stop place whenever you're in the area. Keep up the great work sir Thai Edwards

Will B.

Yelp
I always go here if I'm traveling through! Real, good bbq cooked over wood and real flame. Thomas is the man, would highly recommend getting any type of bbq with rice for a nice comfort food meal on your drive
google avatar

Keegan E.

Yelp
Really great food no doubt but pretty expensive. We fed 8 people and it was almost $250
google avatar

Phouvieng K.

Yelp
To call this BBQ is like calling ketchup tomatoes sauce. I get that BBQ is regional but with all that BBQ hardware they got you would think they would be smoking something. The restaurant has a great location for anyone passing through. Sub par food on the road is better than anything from a gas station. But to each their own. I'm sure much of their business comes from people in need of a quick meal. I'm not going to yuk someone else's yum but in my opinion the Hi-Lo across the street has better grub and is cheaper too. I don't have a picture because I dumped my dry chewy rib after one agonizingly tough bite.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
We were recommended by a friend last year when we were driving north and decided it was a destination dinner location on the way home from Oregon. The owner Tom is super busy so don't be too offended when he's very to the point on the phone. The food is solid. Definitely great smoke bbq with an Asian flair. We'll be back!
google avatar

Jeanie B.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem up near Mount Shasta, Food was really flavorful and just excellent, everything is made when you order it, big portions. Service was great the owner is a person you just have to meet. Ambiance was good, definitely give it a chance, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Kathy L.

Yelp
Food was great. Ordered the beef brisket and rice and chicken breast and rice. BF said he wanted to come back next day. Service is slow - but that's because one guy is basically running the entire joint. So come here knowing you'll be waiting a bit . But worth it.
google avatar

Abby G.

Yelp
Came by with a larger party of 7 people. Thomas, who I believe is the owner, was the only person working so even though there was a bit of a wait, you can tell he puts a lot of love and effort into the food he makes. Amazing food and his sauce is super tasty. I even bought a bottle of sauce to take home! If you are patient and looking for some delicious bbq dishes, I highly recommend this place. 5/5 for the food and I would definitely come back the next time I visit the area

Terry L.

Yelp
The building isn't much to look at but the BBQ is amazing! When traveling back & forth from CA to OR this is our new stopping place. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Sharon L.

Yelp
Their corrects hours are: Mon close Tue close Wed through Sun 12 to 8 pm. You can't go wrong with the mixed plate option; my favorite is the pork belly plate.
google avatar

MrCaveMan8588 O.

Yelp
This guy makes the most amazing ribs in the world. I highly recommend the ribs here, and the rice taste so good.
google avatar

Lynn R.

Yelp
What can I say, DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT's COVER. This place is amazing. It's BBQ with a Thai influence. I had the Tri-tip sandwich, a good amount of Tri-tip with onions and cheese WITH this amazing Thai BBQ sauce with a little kick of spice. Don't be in a hurry everything is made to order, good things come to those that wait! Owner is a bit quirky with a good sense of humor. The menu is on the outside windows, he prefers you wait outside for your for to be ready. If you go inside, please sanitize your hands before you go in the door. I would give this place higher than a 5 if I could. I'm sad that I was only passing through town and won't be able to enjoy the food weekly.
google avatar

Win L.

Yelp
What does one when they are in a town called Weed?! Apparently Asian American BBQ! Such a catchy name - bbq and pho?! Yes please!!! We visited right at opening and they only had tri-tip so we tried that and it was quite good. The service was uber friendly. He actually came out to the camper to let us know the food was ready. He was so proud of the food, he made me try some while it was still hot and freshly cut - had to agree it was really good! Can't say I've had American bbq with rice before it was nicely comforting! I also appreciated the extra attention to cleanliness, he asked/watched me sanitize my hands before entering the store, which has a somewhat open kitchen. Always appreciate the extra effort on customer service and cleanliness!
google avatar

Johanson R.

Yelp
Best Thai Iced Tea we've had. I agree that the service is a bit slow, the staff goes at their own pace, but the food is cooked to order and, while a bit pricey, it is delicious. My wife had the #4 steak sandwich with brisket that featured grilled bread to sop up the sauce and tender spiced beef, and I had the Larb salad (which a Thai restauranteur once told me was the way to judge a Thai restaurant) with beef (no tripe, thanks) that had many layers of slightly spiced flavor and rice to mute it as needed that was magnificent and very satisfying. Exquisite meal that lasted 4 hours to take us the rest of our trip home. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Vincent k.

Yelp
Pro-tip: it's a 2 man show. If it's busy or near closing time, they don't have time for your gibber and indecisiveness. This isn't fast food. The name of this restaurant is spot on. It is exactly that. Really good BBQ with an Asian twist. I ordered the tri-tip with rice plate and it hit the spot. The tri-tip was moist and had a yummy smokey flavor. Will be trying the ribs next!
google avatar

Jordan K.

Yelp
We stopped to refuel up and across the street was smoke and the smell of BBQ meats. The owner's was on top of CV-19 protocols made sure to keep people outside while ordering and only come inside to pick up food. Ordering was easy and he gave us some recommendations. I had the pork belly which was heavenly and juicy. It came with a home made sauce that was wonderful and was not really necessary for the meat, but I used it for my rice. The family enjoyed their meals as well from the dumplings to the chicken thighs to the rack of ribs. It did take about 30 minutes to get our food but it was worth the wait,
google avatar

Yelp
First time back in 2 years! Still amazing, so delicious, so delightful. Every time I eat there I wonder how it's not world famous. A genuine joy. Great barbecue but DONT SKIP the SALAD! That Thai salad is one of the best I've ever eaten and it melds so well with the bbq.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Amazing food! We got the number 7 tri tip and rice. The tri tip was cooked to perfection with the most delicious sauce. The owner was very friendly.
