19 Great Places To Eat Something Kind Of Healthy

"This casual counter-service spot in the Marina serves tasty and filling rice/salad boxes with pre-set and make-your-own options. We like the tofu curry and the pork, and while it’s not going to be your new go-to date night choice, it’s a solid place to hang out and get a casual, healthy weeknight meal." - taylor abrams, will kamensky

14 Healthy, Awesome San Francisco Restaurants to Try

"California chain Asian Box has been honored as one of the city’s worst-named restaurants, but it’s a go-to for those who eschew gluten (it’s free of the ingredient) and the picky, as each box can be customized to order. With proteins like pork, chicken, and shrimp as well as a panoply of greens, the potential combinations are enough to keep you from salady boredom. Order takeout online here, delivery is via DoorDash." - Eater Staff

Asian Box - Review - Marina - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This low-key spot in the Marina serves very tasty and very filling rice/salad boxes with pre-set or make-your-own options. We’re fans of the tofu curry and the pork, and while you can get your food to-go, the interior is actually a lot nicer than many order-at-the-counter spots. It may not be your new go-to for date night, but it’s a perfectly nice place to hang out over a casual, healthy weeknight dinner." - Taylor Abrams

Google
I tried the chicken curry and the viet iced coffee with boba. The chicken curry had great flavor but felt a bit less on the chicken. The spicy sauce was yum. The viet iced coffee with boba was very tasty!

Google
Incredible bowl of noodles! I have a gluten-free diet so it can be hard to find good pho/ramen. And the photo speaks for itself on how much I liked my bowl of rice noodles! Perfectly cooked and seasoned meat, rich broth, and just the right amount. I loved having the extras on the side so that I could personalize the flavoring. As for the atmosphere, I loved the Disco music softly playing but the chairs were a little uncomfortable.

Google
I got a banh mi, it was good the meat was on the dry side. Although I didn't finish the banh mi because it appeared to have tin foil or metal shavings of some kind on the bread.

Google
Delicious and nutritious food, for take away or delivery. I love the fact that their menu is totally gluten free. They offer several options on their menu with meat, chicken, fish or tofu, or you can choose to create your own box. Would definitely recommend to visit Asian Box! I had one take away and one delivery here. Apart from the food temperature I was totally satisfied about their food and would definitely come back here.

Google
So happy I found this place. The server was so kind, and the food was great! We were there right at closing and he even offered us their leftover spring rolls. Would definitely go again.

Google
Friendly staff and great food. The ingredients are fresh and healthy. Presentation is nice and casual. Love it ! I cant add a photo but the food tastes and looks really good

Google
Fantastic place at all amazing location. The food was otherworldly and even had a pure vegan option. They even offered to make any of their dishes vegetarian. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating.

Christophertravelz

Google
Food was pretty disappointing. Basically fast food Asian. Pork meat was very strange, sauce very bland and stewed egg had zero flavor. Tried to charge me $7 for a vita coco drink. Won’t be returning 🥲

Yelp
Quick, healthy, and delicious. I've visited Asian Box several times, and it has never disappointed. I've tried a few items: The Workout, The Miss Jones, Chicken & Veggie Green Curry, and even created my own box. Every dish tasted healthy without sacrificing flavor. When you visit, the cashier will take your order in the front, and your order will be called shortly after. While many people opt for takeout, they do offer some indoor seating if you want to dine in. The interior is relatively modern. Either way, it is a solid option.

Yelp
Tasty asian-fusion bowl-styled meals great for a quick lunch. I stopped by after a workout and got 'The Workout' and took a counter spot by the window, which has a nice view of the street but is a little chaotic being near the cashier. Food came out within minutes! The tamarind sauce is a little sweet, so I wish there was a little more depth (fish sauce, soy sauce, five spice, etc.). I did like the pickled vegetables and mint which added some needed freshness. However, the staff was super friendly and made eating in really enjoyable!

Yelp
Our first time so I took some time perusing the menu. The staff was INCREDIBLY nice, patient and friendly in explaining the different curries, offering suggestions and "well why don't you try them all." We sat outside and given it's like fast casual, we normally wouldn't see anyone again besides ordering at the counter and having food dropped off, but he came by to check on us and gave us some extra crispy shallots my mom loved. Incredible service aside, we loved the healthy and customizable meal options! We got a salmon salad and a chicken vermicelli bowl. Both were fresh, flavorful, filling but light. My mom has some dietary restrictions (must be cooked, light on salt) and this worked well for her and she ate every bite. Perfect meal to enjoy in the sun in the Marina. Quick, healthy, super friendly. Has options for everyone. Spa water! Easy street parking on Fillmore.
google avatar

Cara M.

Yelp
Good for a lunch box- tasty selections and relatively healthy options. Got the chicken green curry and garden box. Good ratio of protein to sides in the box for the price, nice flavors, could maybe be a little more saucy and spicy for both dishes. The shrimp rolls are good and fresh also. Got a takeout order but it looks spacious on the inside with seating and wasn't very busy. Quick service and pleasant staff.
google avatar

Catalina L.

Yelp
Would give this a 4.5/5 visit. Ordered the Miss Jones box that has lemongrass pork, chilled noodles, an egg, and veggies. Flavorful and a fair portion. Pork has nice grilled caramelized flavor and the box sauce is tangy and a little sweet. Easy to order, friendly staff, and for a late Saturday dinner it was ready within 5 minutes. There must be prepared ingredients in a build-your-own-bowl fashion. There's interior seating and some outside patio tables
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff, clean and casual restaurant, healthy and tasty options, all gluten-free. I also got a free housemade drink with my order via a Yelp Check-In Offer. Sign up for a loyalty account and get a free box ($14.99 value) during your birthday week. ENTREES, RANKED FROM BEST TO WORST: = Chef Gracie's Grandma's Pho: Delicious and the portion size is huge! = Miss Jones box: My favorite non-soup box. = The Workout box: Delicious and also healthy = Vietnamese Hot Chicken box: Also good. I request to swap out white rice for brown. = Chicken & Veggie Green Curry box: Also tasty, but spicy, so not for the faint of heart. = Sweet & Sour Chicken box (seasonal): The worst. Way over-salted. Also doesn't taste anything like regular Chinese sweet & sour chicken. Instead, the sauce tastes like what is used for Chinese beef and broccoli. But way saltier, like drinking soy sauce... OTHER ITEMS = Iced Vietnamese Coffee: Perfect if you like your coffee strong. Some tables indoors and outdoors, plus barstool seating along the window, good for solo dining. It's fortunately never crowded or too busy here when I visit. One single stall bathroom in the back.
google avatar

Diane L.

Yelp
The chicken chef's salad was delicious! It was very filling and everything was fresh and tasty. I know it's a salad, but would be better if there were more noodles. The soy vinaigrette also goes really well with the salad and surprisingly there's enough of it.
google avatar

Linda Y.

Yelp
Great spot to get a to-go box and chow down if you're too busy to make lunch or just wanna take a walk by the water with your food. My fav is the workout - the sauce is nice and tangy, chicken is flavorful (nice lemongrass zest) and a nice scoop of (bland) veggies. I'll third whoever said this was an Asian version of Chipotle.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
can't complain about a free rice bowl + viet iced coffee hehe the coffee was nice & strong as expected and the chicken was pretty tender
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
They really have really good quality beef that is very tender and cooked just right. I had the TGTG so i had to ask for a sauce, which was a version of soy sauce. Service was friendly and attentive even for to go.

Yelp
Jan 2024: Asian Box has changed a lot in the past year or so. I am so bummed that the pickled veggies that used to be crunchy cucumber and carrot are now mushy carrots and daikon. The mixed veggies used to already include a hefty amount of cabbage WITH broccoli and now you are charged 50 cents more if you want like 4 pieces of broccoli. I don't think the mixed veggies even have cabbage anymore. You can see the drastic difference in the two pictures I provide. The quality and quantity has gone down. I really hope management considers this feedback from a longtime customer. Texture, color and variety is sooo important with dishes like this. It's turned into blah mush and just feels bland and unexciting. I get that post covid there's a lot of cutting costs which I understand but I honestly would rather pay more for consistent, good quality food than pay $15+ already for the very sad boxes I have been receiving from here so far. These two boxes are both the exact same order! "Chicken box, white rice with everything" minus the sriracha on top of the most recent box. Significantly different and you can tell which one will taste better by looking at it...
google avatar

Brittany K.

Yelp
I'd give the salmon salad a solid 3.5. There's spring mix, cabbage, bean sprouts, and pickled carrot and daikon. The salmon itself is very small but cooked well, and the caramelized shallots are absolutely delicious. It just feels kind of clunky -- like bahn mi veggies piled on lettuce and sprouts with a nugget of salmon? (They add an "operating overhead" fee, which just feels ambiguously shady.)

Yelp
Food is good so returned a second time, but my complaint is the wait. Ordered online for 4 sandwiches and was told that it will be an additional 20 minute wait due to a big order they previously fulfilled. So understandably we waited expecting a 35 minute total wait. We placed our order 1.5 hours ago and we are still waiting. If we had known, we would have cancelled. Now I am going to be late for my next meeting. My recommendation - please request advance notice for big orders so us, peons, don't starve and waste our time. Most likely will not return.
google avatar

Chloe C.

Yelp
FOOD - I got the miss jones and it was fire, was basically a bun thit nuong cha gio. fish sauce carries ofc but the noodles were good and fresh and not starchy or old or stick together l. good amount of veggies and meat so it's not just rice noodles. the lemongrass pork was yummy, the meat was good not chewy not overcooked not overseasoned. a very good meal shrimp spring rolls - these were pretty good, also not too much rice noodle in it which I like and good amount of veggies and shrimp the shrimp is like crisp and juicy like 爽口. PRICE - I feel Ike they r very generous on giving u more stuff than just carbs so that it's a v good ratio
google avatar

Vik C.

Yelp
The Asian bento food here is so flavorful, with the right amount of spice and sweetness, if that's your thing. Pictured below is the Vietnamese Hot Chicken box. My spice tolerance has dropped in recent years (used to eat spicy Indian food) so I found this box, as advertised, spicy. Or, it could have been the hot sauce they helpfully provided in the side. I also like the Thai Curry box. The Pho wasn't as deliciously flavorful, IMO, but it was very good and I would have it again. The check-in is always smooth, the order comes fast, the team very nice. A great experience for about $15/box plus tax.
google avatar

Alaric S.

Yelp
i got the salmon kids bowl with salad since i wanted a small portion! thank god i did without the sauce bc the salmon was seasoned well! service was good, the cashier was super helpful in making recommendations and being courteous of dietary restrictions ambiance had this sports bar feel to it with flies inside, but it was a nice day to sit outside and enjoy the time we went!
google avatar

Timothy E.

Yelp
Tried Asian Box on a whim they had DoorDash special going on. It was worth it pretty flavorful.

J F.

Yelp
Worlds best iced coffee!!! This place uses very fresh ingredients and is always delicious.

Ying Jung C.

Yelp
Visited on a Wednesday afternoon to try their food. I personally like how the food portions are well balanced and vegetables are incorporated into the meal. Service is polite and friendly. Environment is kept clean and comfortable.
google avatar

Sophia C.

Yelp
Reliable takeout. Basically the Thai equivalent of a Chipotle in terms of concept and level of American-ness (not traditional whatsoever) with comparable portions. The ingredients are fresh and the food is consistent every time I get food from there.
google avatar

Katrina F.

Yelp
This place was great! The staff was super welcoming upon walking in and helpful with recommendations. I got the Workout which was so fresh and flavorful. The six-spice chicken was delicious and the tamarind sauce went perfectly with the bowl. Will definitely be back to try other bowls!
google avatar

Kelsey R.

Yelp
Excited for fast causal place in the marina! The Vietnamese iced coffee is so so good. Did a create your own bowl and all the ingredients were fresh and it was a nice portion.

Jenny G.

Yelp
Box was quickly assembled and tasted delicious. I had the Miss Jones with pork, noodles and egg.
google avatar

Martin Y.

Yelp
From the moment we stepped in the service was impeccable. The food was delicious. This is one of the very few times I was able to convince my mother to come with me and the 76 year old Chinese woman she more than anybody is picky about what she eats and I can assure you she ate everything on the plate.
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 3 Decor: 3 Service: 3 Came here a few times for dinner, so I've tried a couple of their boxes. Overall, not as good as the first Asian Box I went to in Palo Alto, so probably would not recommend. Garden Box Extra Tofu, Brown Rice, Extra Steamed Veggies, All Toppers (except Jalapenos), Extra Coconut Curry, Asian Street Dust™, 15 Okay. Tofu was tasty, and the rest of the ingredients were good. The Ox Box Double Beef, Jasmine Rice, Sauce Tossed Veggies, All Toppers, Caramel Egg, Asian Street Dust, Side of Miss Jones' Sriracha, 21 Okay. Beef was cooked well, and the veggies were nice. Overall, wish there was more protein and fewer bean sprouts. Service was fine.
google avatar

Vickie B.

Yelp
Probably one of the better meals I have had. Everything in my box was perfect. The pork, perfectly seasoned. The crispy veggies. The brown rice. And the sauce on the side. How often is everything perfect? Hubby and I really enjoyed our meals.
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
Parking in the area might be a bit of a pain during a busy Friday night, but if you are here there are few better options for a tasty and healthy meal then the Asian Box. My order was takeout, but there is an ample number of indoor tables, and both counter & outdoor seating available. Selecting meal options are easy, and the staff is diligent at making sure that both potential allergic reactions, and spice levels are discussed during the ordering process. As for the food, it's wonderfully fresh, full of yummy veg & proteins with a variety of sauce options. My meal was a Spring Roll & a Bowl which made for a filling and tasty experience. I look forward to going back :)
google avatar

Wei W.

Yelp
Nice customized box, I like its curry chicken and veggies also tastes good. I am surprised the dining area is very spacious, which suits groups or families come together.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
I love Asian box! I order from them frequently because it's a quick food option that doesn't weigh me down. I love getting the green curry with ANYTHING! They're sometimes inconsistent with their quality and execution of meals. Additionally, it seems as though they've gotten rid of their wok veggies as a base which is what I would always get. Regardless, I'll continue to order from Asian box whenever I feel like eating something I won't regret later on.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Celiac Safe! Wow one of the best casual dining experiences I have ever had. The staff was so kind and even offered us free cookies at the end of our meal and constantly checked in on us. They even gave us a free refill on our ice coffee. The food was also fire. The Banh Mi was so good I got an extra one to go. 10/10 recommend this place!!
google avatar

Edward F.

Yelp
Vietnamese Hot Chicken was pretty spicy. Whoever said that this place is the Thai equivalent to Chipotle was spot on. I'd come here again, the fruit in the water was a nice touch.
google avatar

Christine V.

Yelp
If you like viet iced coffee, but have thought it to be too strong / sweet? Asian box has the solution. I'm addicted to their iced coffee! Pre-pandemic it was only $2.99 on Doordash, and I was buying 4 at once to get waived delivery fee, and to stock up for for the work week. As of today the price has increased to $3.49 and I realized what I was doing is not environmentally friendly, so I have stopped. Moreover, I doordashed food too from them 3x a week for work lunch because their food is relatively healthy and good enough that I don't get bored. I've tried various rice boxes, but my favorite is the Salmon rice with everything and Shrimp spring rolls, occasionally I like to add the soy sauce egg and cookie on the side :) However, I wouldn't recommend their Banh mi or the Chicken noodles. Now that covid restrictions are lifting, I order from them less, but I still crave their iced coffee from time to time.
google avatar

Jean M.

Yelp
Good Vietnamese food, fast service. The staff is nice but the inside space would need to be refreshed. Excellent pho soup.

Tyler K.

Yelp
First off. Everyone is so friendly here! Also if your dieting there's some great options. I come here every Monday after my weight lifting session for the chicken and rice!!!! Flavorful, not dry, customer service is amazing, able to customize my food however. 10/10 would recommend

Whitney B.

Yelp
Sad to leave this review because I order from Asian box a fair amount. I always get the chicken curry (my favorite!), but got food poisoning from the marina location on Thursday. I don't think I'll be ordering from here again.

Haley F.

Yelp
good asian and gluten free food. their 5 spice chicken and beef is amazing and i want to try the whole menu. my only complaint is its on the pricier side, but the portions are large if you get any of the bowls
google avatar

Audrey W.

Yelp
I've visited Asian Box quite a few times and unfortunately I will not be returning. Although I appreciate Asian Box's effort to provide a fully gluten free menu, the food is not great and is not worth the cost. My first two times eating here were takeout. When the food arrived cold and lacking flavor, I assumed it had to do with delivery and didn't think anything of it. After eating there two times in person I can share that unfortunately the food is more fast food than anything else. On my most recent visit, I ordered the pho and they put mix and ingredients into a bowl and poured hot water out of a pot to serve it. The water was still luke-warm. After sharing this information with them they gave us another meal but it was still just okay. If you're looking for a gluten free Asian spot, it's worth giving it a shot but there are certainly better options around.
google avatar

Yelp
Ah, Asian Box, a place where you can enjoy the flavors of Viatnam without the hassle of flying thousands of miles. I ordered the Chicken Green Curry and my wife went for the Surf Vietnam Box. We were both in for a treat! The food quality and quantity were both generous. In fact, we had a few leftovers the next day. However, I must admit that the wait time from takeout was a bit surprising. Maybe they allow for a potential mid-day rush but we had to wait for about 50 minutes at 4 in the afternoon. I started to wonder if they were growing the ingredients themselves in the back. Overall, I would rate Asian Box a solid 4 out of 5 stars. The food was worth the wait, but the wait was a bit much. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who's looking for good Vietnamese, but if you are ordering takeout from their app, be prepared to bring a good book or two while you wait.

Robert C.

Yelp
I used to really like the food here. Chicken and beef were cooked perfectly and portions were generous. But quality control has been declining. Ordered two chicken platters and had them delivered. On both orders, the chicken pieces were extremely burnt. Even then I could barely find any chicken pieces. Nothing like what I got in the past. I hope they can get it together.
google avatar

Lisa X.

Yelp
Finally tried this place. We ordered via delivery (DoorDash). Food came on time but everything was wet because the soup spilled inside the bag. Some items fared better than others. The food tasted okay, nothing to rave about. Sorry, I know some of my Yelp friends like this place. I like the chicken. The shrimp tasted very salty. The beef was overcooked. We had some special guests :) so we ate our meals in the yard respecting social distancing. I had to cook additional food for them because some of the food was very salty. Not impressed. Maybe this place is better on location rather than takeouts.
google avatar

Joy T.

Yelp
Got the Surf Vietnam Box and the Shrimp Spring Rolls! Loved the green sauce that came with the spring rolls, not a huge fan of the peanut sauce in the box -- it was a bit sour, not exactly what I expected. Also don't particularly like raw bean sprouts, which was included in the bowl -- much better after I cooked the bean sprouts a bit overall good meal
google avatar

Darina H.

Yelp
My family and I were very hungry and all the nearby restaurants had extremely long waits. We decided to give Asian Box a try and were extremely impressed. I made my own box and it included an Asian salad, lemongrass salad topped with tamarind vinaigrette. I also ordered the shrimp rolls as an appetizer and could not be happier. The portion was great, the food was extremely flavorful as well. My kids ordered a kids box with chilled rice noodles, chicken. They loved it also. I can't wait to come back to Asian Box again!
google avatar

KB B.

Yelp
We ordered this for a staff meeting and the 5 spice chicken workout meal was sooo good! Very tasteful, tender, veggies on the side, and the sauce too is a must to try with your chicken. Portion size was ok though, could've gave a little more meat to fulfill my cravings. So delicious though! Makes you want to come back for more.

Yelp
Found this Gem while walking on Chestnut St. Out of Curiosity checked the Menu...Below me down...Less than $$. Do be honest portion is not bad. Its a Simple menu but good. Very Good that we plan to check other food on the Menu next time. Their Vietnamese Spring Rolls ( Choice of Tofu or Shrimp) is good. Ordered Ox and Spicy Chicken ( It's REALLY SPICY) Good too...Service was friendly and Polite. Funny after i ordered there were just 2 of us. While Waiting at their outdoor tables..Someone over heard me after I said OH their Spring Rolls are GOOD. Secretly they went inside and ordered too..came out later and said..good thing we heard from yousaying good Reasonable Spring Rolls....Word of Mouth is strong I guess...
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Ordered delivery for work and had a few hiccups. The first time, they sent the order to the wrong address and the second time, they didn't have all the orders available. Personally, had the Miss Jones. The pork was a bit tough and wished the eggs were less cooked. The dish tasted fine, but no better than what I would get from a fast food Asian spot at the airport. Hopefully, it was just an off day.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Asian box takeout is like a weekly ritual for me. Always create my own box with chicken, double down on the wok veggies, Asian salad, yellow curry, Asian street dust, and peanut sauce. The pickled veggies are amazing and fresh and the yellow curry really gives flavor to the whole thing. Good bánh mi too!

Yelp
Asian Box is not for "Asians" in San Francisco. It's for yuppies and young people who have money for this kind of fun food expenditure. So with my first try, I wanted to have Asian Box in the Marina district on a Friyay afternoon. I decided to have the lemongrass chicken with vermicelli noodles. It was a Vietnamese Asian fusion dish. It came in a carryout box and I wanted the special sauce that they offer in different varieties. He selected something sweet and spicy for my Asian Box dish. It had some bean sprouts I didn't want to eat because they were not cooked. Oh and when I realized that after I checked-in on Yelp, I got a free housemade drink. The drink could be from a list of housemade drinks including Vietnamese coffee, so I got that today. He even gave me a refill on the free drink(Vietnamese coffee) and we laughed about the free drink and how I would probably not sleep tonight. We also laughed about the homeless people who might be around the downtown Asian Box location. This is a good location for Asian Box, but it's still not an Asian area. It's the Marina district. Asian Box can be found in the Peninsula mostly these days. They do offer carry out and on-demand service with Asian Box I believe. We laughed about the Peninsula again, but I am not from the Peninsula and my sister lives in Florida. I like Asian Box and it is not too expensive. I found a dish that maxed at $12 and they offered me a free drink today with check-in. The cashier was super nice to me. There were single people eating by themselves quietly, but this is obviously not a cafeteria. If you like Asian food fusion in the USA, Asian Box is a nice option...and it is VIETNAMESE NOT CHINESE OR JAPANESE OR EVEN KOREAN. It's mostly a Vietnamese fusion here in San Francisco. We love the Vietnam War and now we have angel investors and seed funding for Asian Box and on-demand and YELP REVIEW for Asian Box..from... Winona Ryder in Petaluma, California!!

Yelp
Been a huge fan of Asian box ever since they opened! All of their dishes are so simple but yet so delicious and not only are their food awesome but so is the company and their mission! Some fun facts: * 100% landfill diversion rate for all items, compostable packaging made from renewable sources. * All stores build with 35% reclaimed materials and FSA certified wood, recycled fireclay tile made in SF, water and electricity consumption is 30% less than competitors. * Produce and proteins are pesticide and hormone free and sources locally. * Their menu is 100% gluten free! We got : * Lemongrass Salmon Salad * The workout * The Ox Box * Fiery Red Curry (It was very delicious and spicy!) It was seriously spicy, so beware! * Shrimp spring Rolls Everything is very delicious and would highly recommend stopping by if you around the area!

Yelp
The dressing w the tofu roll was so acidic I didn't use it at all. The veggie green curry was nearly all potatoes, a couple of small broccoli bites and one carrot piece. There were some sprouts but even less than you would get as a garnish for other entrees elsewhere. Sad.
