Such a fortuitous stop we made ar "A Tavola" this past weekend. In our continuing exploration of our new envrions, we are more than pleased to have another great find.
Was a bit surprised to realize that parking, even in the downtown area on a Saturday, was ample and close to the entrance. We noted several tables & chairs on the front of the building, however, given the rainy weather we opted to dine inside.
Stepping inside we were immediately reminded of an old haunt of ours in the Sacramento area called "Selland's Market Café". Plenty of market item cases - filled with both pre-packaged and fresh items (more on that futher in this review). No question that we'd be shopping right after dining.
You order here deli counter style - many fresh items can be spied in the tall glass counters to tempt you - along with a fairly diverse menu as well. The choices are different enough so as to make deciding what to order is sacrificing one delicious-sounding dish for another. Can always visit again however.
My dining co-pilot selected the "House Roasted Turkey Sandwich" - turkey, mayo, tomato, onion, cucumber, lettuce, and cheddar on a rustic bread. Mixed green salad (option to choose chips) also provided. Thumbs up on the sammy from my co-pilot.
As for me, well, as soon as I read "Breakfast Enchiladas" I was sold. Although the look of this dish says "lasagna" the taste was definitively enchilada-like. Comprised of corn tortilla layers, egg omelette, chorizo (I am a lifelong fan of Mexican-style chorizo, especially when spuds are involved), roasted chilies, cheese & potatoes with zesty red sauce. Served alongside fresh fruit, salsa & sour cream. For me this meal hit on all counts - great taste, texturally pleasing, a nice, medium layer of spicy heat. The fresh fruit was a nice compliment on the cool and refreshing side. Would definitely order this plate again (oh, but read on)...
We of course had to shop the rest of the market after eating. A myriad of different packaged products found on multiple shelves and counters surrounding the indoor dining areas. Most are gourmet-themed items - wines, candies, charcuterie goods, baked goods, etc. Beyond that, A Tavola also has a "sweet" counter just as you walk in the front door. Countering the diverse savory selections at the restaurant with yet another decision-making conundrum of what else can be ordered to take home on the sweet side.
In yet another rewarding section - the frozen food area - carries many of the same items from the restaurant in a convenient take-home, foil packaged format. I definitely grabbed a frozen Breakfast Enchilada to take home with me! We also snagged a sausage & bell pepper quiche, roasted vegetable lasagna, hashbrown casserole, and even a roll of chocholate chip cookie dough! Anxious to try all of the things that I was not able to sample today.
All in all, dining here was a great experience, as was the post-meal shopping. We look forward to returning.
