Nashville Late-Night Institution Hermitage Cafe Is Apparently Closing - Eater Nashville

"Another longtime neighborhood diner, Athens Family Restaurant, lost its home in Melrose earlier this year, but quickly found a new location near Belmont." - Delia Jo Ramsey

13 Best Places to Eat Meatballs in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"Brace yourselves because I’m about to do something no sane person would do, and that’s agree with Guy Fieri. When The Bleached One first infiltrated Nashville, he stopped into Athens for suzukakia, enormous Greek meatballs seasoned with cumin, cinnamon and garlic. He enjoyed them, which you know because his face is now plastered on posters all over the restaurant to prove it. And honestly? So will you. Light, savory and just a little sweet, these meatballs are good enough to make you look past their off-putting, oblong shape and their endorsement by the King of Donkey Sauce to enjoy them." - Ashley Brantley

We had an incredible meal here! Every bit of the food was incredible, the owner served us and talked to us about how he had just made the humans fresh that morning. The red pepper (pimento) dip was SO unique and good. The chicken lemon soup was delish. The gyro plate was amazing. All 5 stars. I wish I lived closer, because this was a gem!

Everything about our visit was awesome! Our server was super friendly and helpful, the restaurant was clean and inviting, and the food was delicious! All the portion sizes were very generous, and the quality was terrific. Where some restaurants use frozen french fries, they make their fries fresh.

Google
My girlfriend brought me here a few weeks ago for breakfast. We’ve been coming regularly since our first visit! The shrimp and grits is probably the best I’ve ever had and the Greek flare certainly comes through in all of their dishes. Unbeatable dining experience & great, family style service. Monique, who waits on us, is super personable and does an excellent job ensuring a good dining experience. We’ll be eating here a long time.

I look forward to stopping at restaurants that triple D has visited. Want to see if their place lives up to the hype that it has received. Got their Reuben and it was good. Just love finding the places that I will make sure to come back. l may come back. Definitely saw other items I believe I would have liked better. Their breakfast items look very good. These places are always better than any fast food place. Glad we visited.

When you walk into this restaurant you feel like you are walking into their home. The owners were so warm and welcoming and cared just as much about our little ones having a wonderful experience as they did us. The food was fresh and delicious. The spanakopita was some of the best we’ve had, made with freshly chopped dill and parsley. We will definitely visit again when we’re in the area.

The food was absolutely delicious. My hubby and I went for my birthday. We got the hummus for an appetizer. For our entrees we got the Kotopita and Bifteki. Wow! The food was so yummy. For dessert we got the baklava. Every bite was amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Had a bunch of friends come into town to celebrate New Years here in Nashville. One of them is of Greek descent, so I took them to my favorite Greek restaurant here in my hometown. They did not disappoint at all. Everyone thought the food was amazing, especially my friend from Greece! Our young waitress was very attentive and nice! The restaurant was clean as were the restrooms! Definitely recommend 🙌💥

Google
This will always be a 5-star place for me. The service is amazing, the food is tasty, and the quantity for the price is excellent. Food: We had the sampler platter that had spicy feta, hummus, and mashed eggplants served with a side of pita. Each was excellent and fresh. When we ran out of pita, our server was kind enough to bring out extra pita to “finish off the dips.” The gyro platter was huge. Excellently seasoned, extremely tasty, and served with really crispy fries topped with feta. Can’t have a more tasty meal for that price anywhere! I will say that the vegetarian pita was slightly lacking. Vegetables were bland, so if they could add more sauces or spices, it’d be a solid option. Overall I am very pleased with these experiences and I will keep coming back!

Yelp
I didn't realize Athens still had a catering business -- but they do! Same (but limited) menu. Same quality ingredients. Same level of delicious. Same customer service. Found them on EZcater for a work event and used them to cater a 20 person lunch today. Muhammad, owner, personally delivered the food. He was on time, personable and so helpful in setting everything up with me! Learned they are actively looking for a new location for a dine in restaurant again (yay). Honestly now that I know they cater the rest of the Greek catering spots are out in my book -- this place is tops, hands down! I'll use them time and time again. Thank you for everything friends. See you soon!

Yelp
Athens Family Restaurant is a very warm environment from the staff to the delicious food. Everything about this place met a high standard. It feels like your local restaurant that you go to after a long weekend. The food was fresh and delicious with amazing portions. You won't leave here hungry! They have a variety of Greek options that anyone would like. I crave their soup now, so fresh. If in the area check this place out and enjoy the beautiful weather on their outdoor patio.

Yelp
The food was so good. I love the Greek soup (lemon, chicken, rice), I also got the chicken soulvaki plate that came with a salad and pita. I ordered a side of rice as well. The salad was very fresh, chicken was cooked when I ordered and very well seasoned, pita bread was perfectly warm with yummy hummus, the taziki sauce tasted very good. I couldn't leave without trying a dessert. I ordered the bouyatsa. Oh my goodness, it was fantastic. The service was inviting and awesome. Monique was my server. She is so sweet and took very good care of me. I love the ambiance, such a cute place. There is patio seating. It is located around the corner from the beautiful Belmont University campus. It's such a cute part of town. 10/10 highly recommend

Yelp
We found the new location in the Belmont area and loved it. We ate outside still in the restaurant, but with the garage door opened up and I got the pita with vegetables and the Greek salad.Yummy highly recommend! Monique was great to us.

Yelp
Don't miss out on the best Greek cuisine! I had a corporate lunch catered by Athens Family Restaurant, and the food--salmon, potatoes, and salad--was incredible, just like your favorite aunt would make!

Yelp
Came here around 1PM on a Sunday, place was pretty empty and quiet. Got the skillet with gyro and over-easy eggs, was really tasty! Service was friendly, food was a bit slow to come out but the portions were huge! Came with a really thick, fluffy pancake too, and I asked for syrup to go with it. The skillet didn't have much flavor, but the potatoes were soft and tasty, good mixture of bell peppers and gyro meat with it. Came out to be around $16 post-tax, good portions!

Yelp
Ok so I have been coming here for a long time and I have never left a review before. This is an overall of ALL of my experiences throughout the years of coming here at different occasions. It has now moved from its original location on 8th Ave which is were all my experiences have been. I have not visited the new location yet but hopefully I do soon. I loved this place the 1st time I came! Wow everything was on point!!! You could tell the food was really made with family love to others. Proud of the heritage mixed flavors that balanced each other with uniqueness perfection. I remembered trying different dishes, specially their lamb ones but always coming back to the Kotopita, potatoes and their tomatoes veggies for sides. What a disappointment it has been as the time progressed. From very minimal (probably mandatory) fixes to their building including the bathroom to the quality of taste of food. I really hope the new location brings the old good times back. The last experience I had the potatoes were undercooked and hard, the Kotopita was sagging and the tomatoes veggies were cold and tasteless. The service was awful and this time I had my kid and we were treated like we were bothering them. I really hope they bring the goodness that kept bringing me back to them. I'll update my review once I visit the new locations.

Yelp
Ordered the chicken souvlaki wrap--served open. There was plenty of food for the price. The restaurant is nice inside, our server was very sweet. Neighborhood is very nice, but parking situation stinks.

Yelp
Tried to go Sunday and found a sign that said they were no longer offering sit down service. Only Uber eats, is available. So sad. Has not been the same since they were forced to leave 8th ave

Yelp
The Falafel pita is amazing! Also, their whipped feta is a must! A nice spot in Hillsboro-Belmont to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
The gyro sandwich was the best I have had outside of Greece! The fries helped top it off for a great meal. My wife likes eggplant much more than do I. She was in love with the baked eggplant platter she ordered. The service was very friendly and efficient.

Yelp
If you order through UberEats ... this is our 2nd time having the driver arrive to the restaurant and wait a significant amount of time for our order to be done. The original estimate was 25 minutes... the final arrival time was almost double that. Get it together, Athens! Too many other great options that can actually complete orders timely ... Our last time

Yelp
Whatever they're doing they're doing it right. Amazing food! I don't know what else to say but you need to come here and right it. Thebomb.com. We got the Gyro Burger which tastes so good, it'll make you want to throw something. Traditional Gyro, which tastes better than any Gyro I've had. Olive Medley was full of flavor, some of the best pita I've had in all of the lands. Come get kicked in the shine from this Flavortown must.

Yelp
We walked in for dinner and it took a while to figure out what to do. There was no hostess to be found and we didn't know if we were suppose to sit ourselves or order at the counter. Eventually, a hostess came out of the back and sat us at a table. I decided to order my Greek go-to: falafels. The platter came with pita bread, hummus, Greek salad, falafel, taziki sauce and my choice of side (which I chose rice). The pita bread was soft and fresh and the falafels were crispy (only a tad dry). It was a decent price but also a good portion of food so I guess I can't complain. Parking was also a nightmare. They do not have a specific lot so it's pretty much a free-for-all street parking situation on Belmont Blvd which is very hit or miss. Overall thoughts: good Greek food but not my favorite in Nashville.

Yelp
Tried to call today to place a carryout order. Whoever picked up the phone said "Stop calling here" and hung up on me. Very rude. I will take my money and my business elsewhere.

Yelp
Fast, clean, friendly ... I have been in the hunt for a Greek family diner since relocating here this past summer. The veggie Benny did not disappoint, and my boyfriend's Sammy looked delicious as well. Thanks for being a little reminder of our hometown.

Yelp
Stopped in for a yummy lunch on move-in day at Belmont University. Conveniently located across the street from the Fisher Center for Performing Arts. The space was nice and open and the service was very good. The gyros platters were hearty and the tzatziki was excellent! A nice place to stop in for lunch.

Yelp
We are a family that does a lot of road trips. Every time we travel through Nashville we eat at Athens Family Restaurant. We love the food and the staff are warm and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
Not much atmosphere but staff is helpful and efficient. Food is delicious. Vegetarian or traditional Greek. Although the kabobs are not grilled but sautéed which changed the flavor. Overall good food at a fair price. Worth a visit.
google avatar

Yaseen G.

Yelp
It was actually pretty good. I got the hummus and falafel plate, which came with a small Greek salad and some fries. The only issue is that my Palestinian mother makes this exact same meal a couple times a week, but ten times better, so it tasted pretty mediocre. I found that the hummus/falafel were especially bland. However, I would love this meal if it was $7-8. It was $19. I will not be going back. It's unfortunate, I did enjoy the food, but it was nowhere near worth the price. Of course, I only had one menu item so I can't judge the entire restaurant, but I would say definitely don't come here unless you can afford to blow $20 on an okay meal. If you have the money, you'll enjoy your experience. But that raises a question: why not go somewhere your money will be better spent?
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
The old location felt like a regular, simple diner. The new location is disgusting. They definitely should have remodeled, or at least cleaned the place before reopening in it. I came home and took a shower after using their restroom. Considering some of the prices have gone up since the move, I'm definitely choosing other breakfast spots from here on out. From a food perspective, pancakes and omelette were okay, but sausage was not hot all the way through, and little plastic containers of cheap syrup left a mess everywhere when pouring. The whole experience needs to be rethought.

Yelp
A staple of the 8th Avenue South restaurant scene, I consider Athens Family Restaurant as one of my favorite diners in all of Nashville. A diner? Yep, for the place has a killer breakfast menu (just dig into one of the omelettes or go sweet with French toast), better burgers than many of its much higher profile neighbors, and a wide range of Greek-American dishes. Service is always prompt, friendly and low-key: they understand if it is a business meeting or just an outing with friends and respond accordingly. Just like any good diner! Fav dishes? The moussaka, either beef or vegetarian, is nicely layered and comes with Greek chicken soup (very meaty) or salad and veggies. A consistent winner. The bacon lamb burger is well balanced, juicy. The chicken souvlakia is a huge plate of cubed, tender chicken--you might go for the pita sandwich instead unless really hungry. My go-to is the Athens pasta, rich robust sauce, fettuccine noodles--I always add the marinated chicken. ISO much goodness, and plenty of parking too.

Yelp
I can't recommend this place enough. The food was delicious and service was impeccable. Try the Avgolemono soup, it's life changing!

Yelp
This spot has some great Greek lunch specials along with a really impressive menu of all sorts of other items which include plenty of non-Greek items like burgers. Some nice choices are the appetizer sampler platter, captain's platter, mixed grill and combo plates so you can get a nice selection of multiple items and I really enjoyed the Greek Combo lunch special. With so many great options you could certainly eat lunch and dinner here multiple times for a few weeks without repeating anything. They also put on a big breakfast menu and while I'm not the biggest fan of breakfast food I have to tip my hat to what an impressively large menu they offer for their breakfast. I do prefer regular food all the time so I'm really sad I can't get my awesome regular Greek food during breakfast time so I wish they would be a bit more flexible on their "rules" of what you can order at what times. The only real food criticism I have of the place is the baklava has a bit of thick dough and is more on the tougher side than any other baklava I've tried before. The online menus available for Athen's Family Restaurant don't do justice to the real menu selection they offer in the restaurant so the owners might want to update those as they are selling themselves short with all the great choices they offer. Overall I've certainly had better Greek food in my travels but this is the best Greek I've had in Tennessee.

Yelp
The gyro sandwich is delicious. Unfortunately, it's the service here (despite the restaurant being pretty empty) which leaves me never wanting to go back. Our simple food took about an hour to come. My SOUP took 45 minutes. Asked for simple things. Extra sauce-didn't come. A napkin-didn't come. Oh well.

Debbie J.

Yelp
Wonderful find for authentic Greek food. We had spanakopita, gyro and Greek salad with lamb. All delicious, great flavor and huge portions. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
I do a lot of travel for work, and decided to visit this place. What first drew me in was that Guy Fieri loved this place. Everytime I come through Nashville I stop by this place. I have been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything has been perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I've ever been to.

Yelp
Don't go. Drove from Chicago to Florida and decided to make a detour on Father's Day to go there because they were on Triple D show. Sign said open, website said open, tried to call, no phone message or answer at all. Arrived at 9:20, door locked closed, no lights. Even though they had a chalkboard sign on the sidewalk saying open at 9. Did someone sleep in and forget to show up? And what restaurant doesn't have a voice message in 2022?! Unprofessional! We wasted precious driving time to get to Florida just to go there. What a huge disappointment. Be accountable for the time you post and put a message on your phone! In the meantime, because we needed to eat, we walked a few doors down to 615 Deli with great employees, great prices, great food! And they were open when they said and working hard. Yay.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants. It is opened 24 hours a day and the quality never falters. The food is always amazing and never lets me down. The staff is friendly but not overly so. All the meals are good here although the breakfast is a real star. Athens is definitely a must try! However, this restaurant does not have great parking and sometimes has a long wait in the morning with no significant waiting area. Additionally, the service is occasionally slow (but not consistently... often times it is quite quick) so if you are in a hurry this is not a guaranteed winner.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Never had the food but I did witness what appeared to be the manager verbally berate a female employee in a very violent tone. Have been considering eating here, but will not support a business that condones that kind of workplace behavior.
google avatar

Jamie K.

Yelp
I stopped by Athens with some friends from work on a Friday night and it was surprisingly easy to find a parking spot, considering the day and time. The restaurant has a very mom & pop ambiance and to top it off, they had a live duo playing music. Very nice and comfortable. We started off with hummus and Spanakopita, both of which were wonderful. For the entree I decided on Kotopita (described to me as a Greek pot pie) with a side of Dina's Potatoes, which was an excellent choice. Sadly, I didn't have room for dessert. If you're in the area definitely check out Athens!
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
Somehow they've gotten worse. I wanted a breakfast but Cracker Barrel was too busy. Decided to give this place a try again. WHY!?!?!? Ordered pancakes, ham and potatoes today. I arrived and my bill was $18. They added an extra order of pancakes, but this is somehow my fault. On the menu, there is the option for Buttermilk Pancakes and a Short Stack. I went with the short stack, and since I did that somehow it's no longer a pancake breakfast and something like adding meat is no longer possible at the menu rate. It's extra. Instead of calmly explaining to me that the menu is wrong, they kept escalating and saying I was wrong and the short stack was clearly listed as a "side". It escalated and escalated until I pulled out a menu and showed them they were wrong. Instead of backing down, suddenly the hostess/waitress was fighting with me. Without her mask on by the way. Instead of fixing the problem, she argued until I told her I would pay but never come back. It was like a scene out of Kitchen Nightmares - you know, before Ramsay goes to work. The food was dreadful. They claimed the syrup was real - it was obviously microwaved Aunt Jemima or something similar. 100% fake garbage. The pancakes were Bisquick specials - gluey, rubbery, underdone and just awful. The ham was only cooked on one side - not sure how they did that. The home fries had raw pieces of potato running through it. Wow. Dreadful service, dreadful food. Took 1 bite of everything and tossed it all in the garbage. Why bother.

Yelp
Great food and service. The pita bread and dips are divine! Great family atmosphere! Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
I don't have enough knowledge or experience to speak on their Greek food, but I DO know that Athens has some of the best American breakfast food in town. I'm not a fan of oily, fried potatoes for breakfast, so I'm addicted to their hash brown stuff which is fresh, fluffy potatoes that are cooked on a flat griddle. They taste like butter and heaven. Their pancakes and french toast are also pretty good. I get chicken Alfredo sometimes when I'm craving pasta but the chicken in it is not great. The sauce is good though. And I've never had it anywhere else before but their lemon chicken soup is BOMB. So full of flavor! The people running this place are really sweet and they always get my order right. It's a hidden all-day-breakfast gem!

Yelp
The food at this place was amazing! We stopped on our way to East TN for a healthy lunch option. Good size portions but the flavors were huge. Service was great. Definitely recommend & will be back.

Yelp
Ordered from this restaurant only to receive items that were packaged so poorly they bordered on inedible...also, received incorrect items, including rice that I can't eat because I'm diabetic. Never ordering from here again!
google avatar

Yelp
After a year of living down the street from Athens Family Restaurant, I finally went this morning for a post-NYE breakfast. The small dining area was packed, but fortunately we didn't have to wait long. Our waitress was great, especially for the number of tables she was serving. I ordered the sausage omelette which came with home fries and a pancake. I was expecting crumbled sausage, so I was a bit surprised when I saw sliced chunks of sausage throughout the omelette. The sausage was decent but overpowered the eggs and (very little) cheese. For as busy as the place was, I was surprised that the omelette was lukewarm (at best). However, the pancake was great, as were the home fries. The menu here is expansive to say the least. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other offerings.

Yelp
This was one of the best burgers I ever had and my first ever lamb burger. This lamb burger was good tasting, very juicy and savory. The server brings you the lamb burger on a delicious bun, next to a bed of fries and a pickle on the plate. It made my mouth water as I watched the server bring it to the table. I have to say this is the best lamb burger I ever had best of all burgers period. I have never eaten a lamb burger one before now and wished, I had been eating this, better than beef to me. This was an amazing lamb burger with the succulent lamb meat and feta cheese sprinkled all over the top Lamb burger, giving it a very umami and flavor, the bun was delicious with the juices soaking in. The golden fries and on the plate made the entire dish look good with great presentation. The restaurant was clean and the waitress and hostess were very nice, I really had a great time and it was a good atmosphere in the restaurant for me.

Camella G.

Yelp
Mom and pop style with good food and large portions. Friendly staff made brunch a pleasure.

K P.

Yelp
Service was awful - so slow. Food was bad. Ambiance is terrible. So disappointing when the location on 8th had so much character. Don't even go if you're desperate.
google avatar

Tonya W.

Yelp
We stopped here one night on our vacation. We love authentic Greek food. My husband spent two years in Greece. The food here was delicious--not your fast food kind of Greek. The service was friendly. One of our favorite restaurants in Nashville. We look forward to going back.

Jeff G.

Yelp
So I haven't been to the Athens family restaurant since they moved. Kind of interesting to try to figure out the parking...but as usual, the food was freakin' outstanding, service was terrific. I'm sorry it took so long for me to come back. I highly recommend this place to anybody who's looking for an authentic Greek meal.

Ted S.

Yelp
Only reason they get two stars instead of one is that they somewhat redid the order after we had to complain. Not what I expected from a 'Greek family' restaurant. Where is the loving hospitality and service? Where is the soft mediterranean music in the background? Nothing against the young people working there trying to get through the week to make a buck, but... here's What we experienced: *Sticky chair backs. Ripped chairs. *Undercooked meat *Wrong order given, twice. * Missed item with order. * Atmosphere playing wrong music. * Floors dirty. Remember; if an apology is needed, None will suffice. I wish we could have given 5 stars, and we were so hopeful. Hopefully management takes the critical reviews and works on improving the place. Management must LISTEN to their reviews! Find new ZEST and PRIDE in serving the public with LOVE.

Yelp
As of last night we are retiring our suggestion of Athens Family Restaurant. The service was great, but the food was not that stellar. For the appetizer, we had Melitzanosalata. It wasn't the best we have had. It had a fizzy sensation to it, which isn't normal. Our table ordered spanakopita and the gyro platter. The spanakopita was mostly spinach and no other onion or feta. The gyro platter was fine, except it came with two triangles of pita...it used to have enough to make a kind of sandwich. The taziki sauce wasn't tasty at all. It tasted like mayonnaise. Then there was another sauce that was sour cream. We will not recommend this restaurant to people anymore and I'm very sad about that. It used to be our favorite Mediterranean place, but now in search of a replacement restaurant!
google avatar

Mandi W.

Yelp
This place is a bit pricey for their menu options. They appeared on a Food Network show, and I think that may be the cause of the prices. They served me meatballs with a salad on the side. The meatballs were just ok. I could only eat one, and the salad was a Greek salad with mushy tomatoes. I was unimpressed. I had to ask for a refill on my drink, twice. The third time I just went thirsty. It wasn't busy at all, so I don't know what the problem was keeping me hydrated. My kids didn't finish their meals either, which tells me they didn't care for it. I was disappointed and won't be back. They're awfully proud of being on tv with posters everywhere, and even in their menu, but they just didn't pull it off. Sorry, Athens Family Restaurant, but this first impression was a lasting impression.
google avatar

Dawn L.

Yelp
We went there with a large group of 13 people and we were able to sit together and the server was amazing handling our huge party. The food was pretty good. The eggs on my Benedict was a bit overdone. And the spinach was from frozen (would have been better with fresh) I picked it off and still enjoyed it. My husband had a regular Benedict and it was the same. The fruit side was great bc it was all fresh. All in all I'd come back but specify how I'd like the eggs done and no spinach.

Meaghan C.

Yelp
Just ordered postmates from this restaurant and the food is fantastic. Large portions and delicious flavors. The gyro meat is juicy, soup is great, hummus special was more than worth it. Will dine again.

Yelp
My husband really enjoyed the Big Boy Breakfast! I had the Bifteki and Athens Fries. Both were yummy! Our waitress Daeja was very cheerful, attentive and kind. Her smile lit up the room! Thank you!

Yelp
We, my husband and family asked yo take out our order, and it is very fast if service. The owner is very kind. The place is chill. I recommend homemade Spanakopita. The family thought their food was pretty good. If you go by car, they have parking lot. The price is a big deal!
