Best Sandwiches in Austin | Eater Austin

"Inside the Armadillo Den in Far South Austin, Atlas Sandwich Company crafts Greek-inspired sandwiches that are packed with flavor. Lamb and chicken marinated in herbs get loaded with tzatziki, smashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables. The spicy whipped feta sauce belongs on everything. Grab a beer and enjoy it under the trees. Ordering online for pickup and delivery is available." - Darcie Duttweiler

The Hottest New Restaurants in Austin, August 2024

"This newer food truck relocated to West Campus bar Cain & Abel’s in late June, bearing along its Greek-style sandwiches. Look out for options like the namesake Atlas with slow-roasted lamb paired with smashed lemon potatoes, tomatoes, red onions, and tzatziki or the the grilled cheese-ish Grilled Greek with saganaki cheese and hot honey. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are Uber Eats deliveries; and there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas courtesy of the host site." - Nadia Chaudhury

Austin’s New Restaurant & Bar Openings

"Parked in a quiet food truck lot on East Cesar Chavez, Atlas Sandwich Company serves mostly Mediterranean sandwiches and stuffed pitas. The signature filling here is slow-cooked and shredded lamb, but there’s also grilled eggplant, classic Italian deli meats, and more. " - nicolai mccrary

Google
I got the Atlas and the Spartan, both lamb! And Saganaki cheese on the side. Absolutely delicious and staff is very friendly! Great experience overall.

Google
Really enjoyed the Atlas and Athena sandwiches. Everything tasted fresh! The dip trio with pita was great too. Wish that the Armadillo Den allowed kids on the weekend but we were able to enjoy at a local park a few minutes away.

Finally got to try it out after it was sold out several times! Worth the wait and so glad we tried it. Definitely would come back for more.

Google
Tried the Atlas sandwich and lemon potatoes. Have to say that Joey did a great job on achieving the original greek slow cooked lamb flavor. It’s definitely a must for me.

Google

Google
Officially one of my fav new food trucks in Austin that I’m adding to my rotation! I could eat the Aphrodite sandwich everyday— if you’re a fan of sweet & savory, you gotta try it. All the ingredients were great quality and service was great!

Google
Solid sandwiches (I’ve had three they’re all great) and the lemon potatoes are awesome. I’m a big fan of all their sauces! I love to dip.

Google
First time trying this spot. We had it brought to work for lunch and everyone is raving about the sandwiches. I had the Atlas with slow cooked lamb, the lamb is so tender and flavorful, the pita bread is amazing and toasted to perfection and the lemon smashed potatoes set it off in a way I can't even begin to describe. The most unique and delicious sandwich I've ever had. Want to try the Aegean next time as mortadella is one of my favorites. Definitely coming back and would highly recommend this spot! Keep up the great work!!!

Yelp
Given its location is next to a rock climbing gym, you'd expect Springdale Station to offer more health-conscious options. Out of the few food trucks and pizza restaurant offered, Atlas Sandwich Company seemed like the closest fit. As its name implies, Atlas Sandwich Company primarily focuses on making sandwiches, modern Greek style. My friend and I split both the Aphrodite (slow-cooked lamb with whipped ricotta and hot honey) and the Greek Freak with added lamb, (cheese, hot honey & lamb) but both were not as refreshing or as light as I had hoped.

Yelp
I have been fiending to go to this spot for weeks and MAN I wish I hadn't waited so long. We split The Spartan (spicy feta is my weakness), and it was absolutely delicious! Only thing to note is that it is less filling than your average gyro due to the thinner pita, but that is evident by the photos. We prefer that! Cannot wait to see where they move next!

Yelp
Saw this food truck on my instagram feed and i ended up meeting here tonight for my run club so i decided to order the Atlas to give it a try. It was a flavorful delicious sandwich and the service was amazing! We got our food very quickly. But is the sandwich worth $15? I don't think so....loved the location & vibe of the truck though!

Yelp
10/10! Do yourself a favor and go try this place. You won't be disappointed. Promise. We had the Greek freak and the atlas. My husband tried the spartan earlier this week. His ranking is Greek freak, spartan then atlas. All the sauces are great, but I especially loved the hot honey as an extra side for the Greek freak. Service was great and ambiance is nice (outside on picnic tables under shade structure).

Yelp
Help me understand how their website (and Yelp) indicate this is open today, a Saturday, and it is not. We drove 30 minutes to try this place out, and I am going to be hard pressed to venture here again. Update your website, people.

Yelp
So good! We split The Spartan, which had a ton of flavor with the two sauces (tzatziki and spicy whipped feta) and the grilled pita bread. The feta had a good subtle kick without overpowering. We originally went to try The Soprano, but it wasn't on their menu anymore, so most of your choices will just be lamb. My only tip would be to eat it asap though, because the pita is thin and the sauces seeped through the bread on our 15 minute drive home. Still didn't affect the flavor though!

Yelp
Atlas sandwich is worth the hype, bringing amazing sandwiches (with a side of dad joke) to a lacking scene in Austin I LOVE hot saganaki/halloumi and start shvitzing at the sound. Then add honey AND lamb, served sandwiched between two pitas and you've got yourself one hell of a drug called the Greek Freak. I will be back to try the one with just the saganaki and honey ASAP. The other sandwich I had was the Corleone, a more traditional cold cut style, a little bready for me but delicious and was good balance to the pita. I enjoyed the spicy whipped feta and added it to this. The team in the truck were friendly and excited I complimented their dog treat menu add. Excellent belly rub joke. The sandwiches were made quickly and came out perfectly temperatured. The truck sits in a small food park on Cesar Chavez with plenty of outdoor picnic tables and a shade / rain covering.

Yelp
Really nice dining experience, the owner was very helpful, and happy to make a sauce substitution. The sandwiches are sort of panini-like, and the two sauces we tried were great. I had the Atlas Sandwich; the lamb was succulent and nicely balanced by the tang of the whipped feta (the afore-mentioned substitution). I also had a bite of my wife's veggie sandwich (can't recall the name - it was a special), and it too was great. Also highly recommend the house made potato chips (but eat them quickly - which shouldn't be a problem). We live close - will return.

Yelp
After waiting 30 minutes for our food, the chef, with an attitude, told us it would take at least another 10 minutes. When those 10 minutes passed, we still hadn't received any notification about the food being ready. As I stood there waiting, the cashier asked if I was waiting, and I discovered the food had been sitting there for a while, with the fries cold. When I mentioned the cold fries, there was no apology, and I was simply told I'd have to wait another 5-10 minutes. The fries were taken away, but no attempt was made to fix the situation. The sandwiches were mediocre at best. Save your time and money!

Yelp
Tried the 'atlas' sandwich, it was sadly very bland. Love the concept, grilling the pita added a nice crunch, but the filling itself lacked flavor. I agree that ingredients should stand out on their own but they still need some sort of boost.

Yelp
WOW! I absolutely love Greek food and Atlas just knows how to merge Greek & sandwiches so seamlessly. There really are no bad options on the menu and I can't wait to make my way through the entire thing. The service is also awesome! I love being able to support local businesses. You've got to check this place out!

Yelp
Was so excited for this sand which shop to open and it did not disappoint. The sauces are all unique and delicious and create an amazing combination of flavors. Excited to come back

Yelp
Ordered the Greek Freak with Saganaki Cheese and Lamb. Great flavors all around and very reasonably priced. Don't sleep on the lemon potatoes. Will definitely be back!

Brent K.

Yelp
Amazing food all around. get the Greek Freak if it's on special, but you can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches. all the sauces and sides looked good too. It's an easy location right on Cesar Chavez and there are picnic tables to eat at too. Parking was super simple and there were two other food trucks that all looked good too. Service was quick and the owner Joe seemed super cool. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
The sandwiches here are amazing! Serious lack of good sandwich spots in the area until now. We tried the greek freak and the atlas - lamb was really tender, and the sauces were so good. Greek freak is probably my favorite. Super savory, cheesy, a hint of sweet from the hot honey, and my pro tip is to add the spicy whipped feta. YOU WILL GET ADDICTED! I tried for the first time on Sunday and already planning on going back again on Tuesday for lunch. You won't regret it!

Chase D.

Yelp
I met a good friend for a quick sandwich and was so happy I found this place. Service was super fast and Joe was really helpful with picking out a banger of a sandwich!

Charlie G.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches. Austin needed this. Had the Aphrodite, the lamb was perfect and juicy and the whipped feta was a great touch. Good vibes from the guys working there. They care about what they are doing and it shows in the quality of the food. Super quick too. Looking forward to working my way through their sandwiches, especially anything with lamb!

Denise R.

Yelp
never thought I'd like lamb but this place knows just how to cook it! Went for a cold cut but ended up ordering The Atlas and was not disappointed, so good! Dont skip on the lemon potatoes!

Melissa P.

Yelp
The whipped feta is obsession-worthy. You definitely can't go wrong with the Spartan or the Greek Freak, but I plan to eventually taste everything on the menu (and add the whipped feta). Did I mention that I would eat cardboard if you put the whipped feta on it?
