10 Essential Salvadoran Restaurants Around DC - Eater DC

"Named after a tiny plaza on the site of an active volcano in San Miguel, El Salvador, this pupusa spot serves up a variety of Salvadoran specialties, including the $16.95 puerco al horno — roasted pork bites sautéed with onions and plantains. The highly recommended La Placitas sampler at the restaurant’s 14th Street location offers grilled shrimp, steak, chicken, and one pupusa served on sautéed veggies." - Lenore Adkins

Loved this seemingly family-owned restaurant. Excellent service and quality food. I would highly recommend the chicken and rice the fingerling potatoes, those are highlights for sure. The bok choy was also very good. I think you can't go wrong this restaurant is very well done.

There aren't paintings on the walls nor clothes on the tables. There's nothing special about the decorations at Atxondo, but don't underestimate them. They make up for it with their food. A Spanish Basque Country restaurant, their menu is more affordable compared to many restaurants in D.C. and pack their dishes full of flavor. Everything we ordered, we enjoyed. Our favorites: Manchego cheeseburger, roasted Brussel sprouts, scallops on a bed of squid ink rice, and the Basque cheesecake. The drinks are solid too. The $10 red sangria was how I want all sangria to taste. The guava margarita was excellent too! The staff are so kind, attentive, and personable. I can't recommend this place enough!

i came in with a friend while visiting DC. we loved our food, everything was amazing. loved the homemade chips (it came with more but we were munching!). i dont remember the name of this dish but SO GOOD. we came in around 5:15pm and happy hour ended at 5:30pm. so we got sat, waited, ordered drinks (that were put on happy hour), waited more, and then literally as soon as it’s 5:30pm, our server comes over and when we ask, the server says we cant order food on happy hour. so in 15 minutes, we got two drinks and did not have a chance to order food. i think there may have been the one server only but unsure. he was running back and forth occasionally but other times, didnt look super busy. it was empty inside besides maybe one or two other tables and a few people outside so i wasnt sure if he was overwhelmed or what truthfully. my friend and i have both worked in food service so we’re always empathetic but it was super frustrating to sit for so long and not be able to order food. it genuinely almost felt intentional but maybe it was just poor timing or the kitchen was busier than it seemed. overall, i recommend you eat here most definitely, the food didnt disappoint at all. but if you want to get the happy hour deals, come in with ample time to spare.

The food here definitely punches above its weight. This is a local neighborhood gem and we’re lucky to have it. The gambas are my favorite, but really everything I’ve had has been solid. The decor is pretty simple, but I promise the food makes up for it. It’s family friendly and you’ll see kids there. The Dads will go for a good dinner out; the Moms will go and talk about their husbands; maybe the moms and dads will go together sometimes.

Stopped here for brunch on Saturday for our first visit, and I was very impressed! I had the steak and eggs, which was flavorful and very satisfying. My table also ordered the Torrijas, a French toast with Chorizo, as well as the golden beet salad. All of our plates were delicious. Service was prompt and we sat outside on the small patio. One member of my party is a toddler, and she approved of the eggs she hijacked off my plate, as well as the French toast off my partner’s.

Google
This restaurant was truly incredible. My partner and I went on a whim and are very glad we did. The food was delicious and came out super quick. Everything was cooked to perfection and the textures were especially amazing. Their chef truly knows how to get the perfect level of crisp. Also, you can't beat the prices. This restaurant probably has one of the best price to quality ratios I've ever seen. For what you get, you really can't beat the price! Even the drinks are strong and worth the money. Would highly recommend the scallops, pork belly, and mussels, but honestly everything was great!

Google
As far as Spanish tapas goes, this is a very middle of the road and unmemorable spot. Both the food and cocktails were pedestrian, and service while fine was equally unremarkable. We tried a charcuterie plate, kale salad, Spanish tortilla, grilled octopus, croquettes, meatballs, crispy potatoes and ribeye. Everything was sub par with the exception of the patatas bravas. Ribeye was particularly terrible, tough and poorly grilled. I would pass, much better options in DC for tapas.

Google
Popped in for deserts only.. got the cheesecake and churros for $17 bucks take out. The cheesecake was great but it was the size of a bite size sample thus the star deduct. The churros were good but a tad greasy. Staff was cool.

Yelp
We ordered a ton and finished it all. I'm going to be ranking the dishes from my favorite to least reached for. 1. chuleta de cerdo - this was so well seasoned and the butternut squash puree & crisp elevated the dish even more 2. seared scallops - this was my first time trying squid ink and it had such a depth in flavor with a slight creamy, light bitter taste that balanced well with the scallops 3. roasted brussel sprouts - I am not a brussel sprouts fan, and I am still shocked I am rating this over potatoes, but it was better! I enjoyed the slight char of it 4. crispy fingerling potatoes - I liked how the potatoes stayed crispy even though it was drenched in sauce. However, it did not stand out so much to me as other dishes. 5. tortilla española - for me, it was a lot of eggs and potatoes and that was really all you can taste from this one

Yelp
What a hidden gem....like ... seriously hidden...waaaaaay up 14th Street. In a easy to miss strip of shops in an easy to miss part of DC is a little Tapas Bar serving massive flavors at shockingly good prices. I went with 4 friends, all over 6 foot 2, so we were able to taste half of the menu. Everything we had was stand out good, came out fast and full of flavor. This is now my favorite Spanish restaurant in DC (thank God, cause I was really missing Estadio the other day). The dishes I'll ask for on my death bed are: the scallops over black rice (scrumptious and perfectly cooked scallops resting on the most delicious and most rice....like....the rice might out shine the scallops it's that good); the steak (PERFECTLY cooked and impossibly tender....what the hell did they do in that kitchen!!!!!! We almost ordered another); and the seafood paella (just...get...it.... period)!! Fast and friendly service, solid cocktails and of course sangria. I don't want to gate keep. This place is a hot! Go keep it in business!!!!!

Yelp
Hidden gem that serves many classic Spanish dishes like tortilla, paella and more! Loved the Brussel sprouts dish and happy hour food + drink specials. Seating available outside or inside.

Yelp

Yelp
Amazing food and lovely service. This place is a sleeper and it won't be long before Tom Sietsema 'discovers' it and you have to wait to get in.

Yelp
Stopped in recently for a meal on the patio and it was good, not great. Some nice dishes, some ok. Service was good. Didn't do any drinks. For food, the highlights were: crispy potatoes (bravas), pan con tomate (flavor was amazing, bread was soggy), mushrooms garlic wine sauce with an egg (great flavor but very liquidy/hard to share). We also did the gambas (delicious sauce but the shrimp were overcooked), the octopus (nicely cooked but just not a favorite), manchego cheesebuger (just ok), and the tortilla (not runny inside, no onions, i'd call it a potato omelet). the coconut flan dessert was nice, a touch sweet but not overly so. Overall enjoyed, it's not difficult to get into so that's nice but it's a bit of a trek for me so not sure how frequently I'd go as there weren't many truly standout dishes

Yelp
Dc's new hidden gem. Estadio's old chef opened this spot. He knows what he's doing. Top dishes: - Gambas al ajillo. Wow. Better than other Spanish restaurants. - Pork belly. Incredible. Crispy yet soft and perfect accompaniment. - Crispy potatoes. These kill the Jaleo patatas bravas. Decent dishes: - Croquettas: definitely decent but not wow. - Shishito peppers: v tasty but they could add more seasoning. - Churros: these were just ok. Greasy and needed more sugar coating and cinnamon. - Mussels. Great sauce but they didn't taste very fresh. Great corkage ($15). They need new wine stemware (it's very average) and a decanter. The atmosphere is meh. But the staff is super nice and relaxed - we loved them. Otherwise this is my new favorite restaurant in DC.

Yelp
The Food, Service, and Ambulance was Amazing. Will definitely patronize this establishment again!

Alison H.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Steak & cheese sandwich, egg croissant sandwich, bok choy, beet salad...all was truly delicious!

Yelp
This place deserves so much more business. Best cheese steak i've ever had and the chips are freshly made. Everything was perfect.

Yelp
Atxondo was such a lovely surprise. We are visiting DC for the weekend for dance and felt like we were in the middle of nowhere when we saw this place. It was a very chill neighborhood for a Saturday afternoon, and we're so glad we took a chance. The patatas bravas were amaaaaazing, and I was pleasantly surprised that they chose to fuse a curry sauce with their bok choi, rice, and salmon. A smart combination that cuts through to the palate. The smoothie and sangria were refreshing, and I was happy that I came during their afternoon happy hour. Their staff is friendly and the restaurant features an inviting environment. Check them out next time you're passing by; I highly recommend!
google avatar

Sam R.

Yelp
I continue to LOVE this place. The food is delicious and sauces are so good you'll ask for more toast to mop them up. The service is warm, prompt, and thoughtful. The environment is chill. There is plenty of parking. I recommend coming up to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Easily one of our favorite Spanish spots in the city. Extremely friendly service and such high high quality food. Went for a friends birthday and had so many dishes - the standout was the whole rock fish - wow! Don't sleep on this gem on upper 14th for amazing food and overall impeccable experience.

Yelp
Cam here with friends. We had heard good things and wanted to check it out. Spanish food from the basque region is very good as I have been there and have first hand experience. In the north they call them "pinchos" instead of "tapas." And of course most of the menu is naturally gluten free. We started with the cheese platter which was excellent and I a martini made with Spanish Gin. It was nice and served in a fun glass. In the end we ended having the manchego cheeseburger (no bun for me). I know, not the most Spanish item on the menu. But it was very good. The place is simple and their is actually more seating outside than inside. The prices are reasonable. I would come again if I am in the neighborhood (which is likely since my friends live a block away), but this is not something that I would recommend driving a long distance for. In other words a great neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in DC. The first time I visited ATXONDO was at their GRAND OPENING back in March, 2020; ever since, I've been a loyal customer. I love the flavors of their dishes, they are so succulent it's almost impossible to describe... The service is 10/10, the bartender and manager, Jose, makes the best cocktails you can ever have. Every time I go there, I stay at least, 4 hours or more, just enjoying the relaxed ambience of this small and cozy place. It's truly a Gem!! I recommend it 100%. You won't be disappointed. I have tried: Tortilla Española. Roasted Brussel sprouts. SAUTÉED KALE SALAD. Crispy Fingerling Potatoes (A must have!!!). Spanish Risotto. Mixed Vegetables. Manchego cheese. Yogurt-Salsa Verde garnish. Gold Beets. Asparagus Asados. Gambas Al Ajillo. Another MUST HAVE!! Seafood Paella. Seared Skin-On Salmon. Delicious!! ROCKFISH - Panfried whole. Chuleta de Cerdo. Argentine RIBEYE STEAK. This is my #1. Grilled Chicken. Manchego Cheeseburger. (My favorite). BOTIFARRA. (Not my favorite but it's good). Manchego Cheese. Enjoy!

Yelp
Delicious food! I almost don't want to leave a review for this place in fear that when more people discover this place, reservations will be harder to come by. We loved the no frills just great food ambiance of this restaurant. The drinks were yummy as well. Our favorite dishes of the many we tried were the scallops and the shrimp but everything we ordered was really good.
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
I wish I could give 4.5 stars on Yelp. The potatoes were a great starter, the steak wasn't a true medium rare but it was still well seasoned. Also the seafood paella was presented beautifully but the only gong and why I would give it 4.5 stars is that the seafood was a bit over cooked.
google avatar

Abe K.

Yelp
Paella paella paella. You won't regret it. It's the best in DC. The order serves 4 for $60 which is great value. It's better paella than some places in Spain. You get plenty of seafood with rice and the flavors are incredible. When you order at the restaurant, the rice will come out crispier on the top but getting it take out is just as good. The happy hour is long and great as well, fantastic margaritas.
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
Don't wait in line at Jaleo- check out this lovely restaurant instead! We ordered vegetarian items and were so pleased by the plating and flavors. We loved the patatas bravas, cauliflower, chilled tomato soup, and beet salad. The cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced. The servers are attentive and kind. One star deducted because the menu is only accessible via QR code. I didn't have a great signal in the restaurant, so it took a while to pull up the menu and it was hard to peruse on my phone.

Michael S.

Yelp
I've eaten at just about every trendy and high end restaurant in DC. I've also been to Spain multiple times, including Michelin starred restaurants in the Basque region. The food at Atxondo is better than anywhere else I've eaten in DC anytime in recent memory. Every single dish was absolute perfection. Certainly no other Spanish restaurant in the area comes close. And at a very reasonable price point. I already can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Susannah C.

Yelp
Took a photo on my next visit. The scallops and the veggie risotto are out of control good. Didn't see that coming on the risotto.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Hidden Gem in DC! My fiancé and I stumbled upon this gem while driving in DC, and it's been on my mind ever since. The food was absolutely delicious, and each dish came out promptly. Little did we know, by the time we finished, there was a line out the door. It's a hidden treasure that's definitely worth discovering!
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
We ordered take out this evening and every dish was scrumptious. My favorites were the Asparagus Asados, Tortilla Española, and the flan for dessert. The staff was very helpful when I picked up the food. We'll definitely be back for takeout and in-restaurant dining.
google avatar

J E.

Yelp
WOW! What a sleeper this place is!!! We came here with family who was familiar with the chef/owner and knew this place had to be amazing based on where he was previous to making this restaurant. He wasn't joking... the service was great, the food was outstanding!! For tapas this is one amazing joint, better than the "popular" place in DC owned by the very popular chef. The place is very clean and service was excellent! Prices are GREAT, this is another area that makes Atxondo better than the other tapas place, it's more affordable with larger portions here. We tried several (actually "many") items from their menu and each was outstanding!! I highly recommend giving Atxondo a try!!
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
This place is so delicious. A hidden gem. Completely worth the quick drive to get there. The staff are lovely and have terrific suggestions. The whole vibe of the place is great. And oh, that food. Yum yum .
google avatar

Aurore A.

Yelp
This restaurant was a pleasant surprise! The location and exterior are unassuming but the food is wonderful. We ordered both aperitifs to start. The aperitifs are full sized beverages so don't expect little glasses. For food we ordered: Crispy fingerling potatoes 5/5 Spanish risotto 5/5 (delicious!) Gold beets 5/5 Grilled octopus 4/5 Manchego cheeseburger 4/5 The food was delicious and the coquito is a must order! I can't wait to come back and try more items off of the menu.

Victoria D.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. Not a large place. Food is excellent. I went here with a group of six and they were able to accommodate and the service was quick. Loved the octopus. On street parking only.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
This might be my favorite restaurant in DC. There's no frills but the service is always incredibly friendly and the food is phenomenal. The Gambas Al Ajillo may be one of my favorite dishes in the city and the chicken was the surprise dish for me- I can't believe how good it is. This is the type of restaurant that I debate telling people about because I love the neighborhood home in the wall vibe, but it's that good. Don't walk but run to Atxondo, best Spanish food in the city by far.

Helene F.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service. Roasted cauliflower was insanely delicious. We also had the shishito peppers, jamon, chorizo, olives, pan con tamate and churros. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Robert O.

Yelp
Unassuming outside, but a very nice interior with great food, great service, and a nice bar and drink menu. Spanish theme but with nice diversions; curry on the salmon and Argentinian steak.
google avatar

Lucas H.

Yelp
Good and drinks are spot on, this is a hidden gem. Friday nights often have live music and a great crowd.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Simply amazing. The value and quality is unbeatable at Atxondo. Asparagus - smoky and deep flavor, balanced with tomato Pork belly - perfectly cooked (crispy exterior + soft interior) and wonderfully marinated, definitely get this Scallops - great price! the scallops are perfectly cooked the rice is buttery, everything melts in your mouth Mussels - good mussel flavor and cheese forward sauce, very solid Brussels - jammy raisins and melty cheese on crispy brussels Octopus - smokey as well and nice meaty texture Mushrooms - deep mushroom flavor sitting in some mushroomy sauce, topped with an egg! melty squishy goodness! Potatoes - perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, topped with a creamy and refreshing sauce Overall everything was very good, hard to find a place like this where they consistently deliver quality service and food! They were even kind enough to provide us a complimentary glass of sangria. The drinks are strong and worth your money. Will definitely be returning!

Aron T.

Yelp
These recent 5 star reviews have been spot-on. If you like Bouqueria or Barcelona fare, this is on the next level (wndat a better price point). Gambas were the best we've ever had, maybe anywhere, not just DC. Just get it. Vegetarian Risotto was our next favorite, very well balanced richness with just enough salty and herby flavors. Fingerling potatoes and cheese plate were not quite as much of a knockout as the above but still hold their own. Red Sangria was well-balanced boozy and sweet (stir it up a bit before sipping). The portions were very generous for tapas, we were able to split everything we had without feeling like we wanted more of it. Service was attentive and polite. The only slight negative I'd give it as others have pointed out was the basic decor, but the food more than offsets it. We'll be back regularly.

Babak S.

Yelp
Hole in the wall vibes but excellent food. This is a neighborhood gem that people shouldn't overlook.

Jane M.

Yelp
Unique Spanish food experience in DC outside of the typical Jose Andres restaurants. A hole in the wall I would come to again!
google avatar

Linda V.

Yelp
This place seems to be new haven't seen it before being from the area so gave it try. The fried potatoes with the sauce was really good had so many textures that just melted well together. The best thing for me was the flan, I love a flan that is more custard like rather than gelatin it was creamy, flavorful and delicious. The shrimp which isn't pictured with garlic sauce was probably second best only issue was I wish the one piece of bread that came with it didn't taste burnt and that they gave you atleast two pieces to soak up the garlic oil the shrimp is cooked in. The salmon dish was ok just a little put off by the basmati rice in a Spanish restaurant the skin was perfectly crispy but lacked all kinds of flavor just tasted plain. The gin I had gotten tasted like rubbing alcohol couldn't finish it but ate the olive that came with it. My brothers drink tasted better it was a margarita I believe very refreshing and a hint of spice muddled in it. The place was empty up until a couple of minutes of us leaving once another guest arrived it was like we kind of didn't matter and was attended to less. Future reference I would attend to all guest equally especially when you only have two to even worry about and one on the way out.
google avatar

Cynthia N.

Yelp
We love coming here! Everything is delicious and the staff is wonderful. We are gluten free and dainty free and find lots of wonderful Spanish options for us. If you live in petworth or nearby this is a great place to come with a group, for a date night, or time with your family, even young kids. Don't hesitate!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
I've had one five star experience and one three star for the same food, so evening out to four. The tortilla had been excellent both times, and I really like the gold beet salad. One time I went the cauliflower and Brussels were undercooked but the other they were great. Will definitely return though! Easy pick up for take out as well.
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
What a great find! Spectacular Spanish cuisine on par, if not exceeding the standard bearers in the city like Jaleo, Barcelona and Estadio. Our favorites were the Brussel sprouts, Tortilla, and the beet salad. The risotto was excellent as well, with multiple sauces complementing the perfectly cooked rice. An excellent value, with plates considerably more affordable than restaurants downtown. We ordered delivery through Uber Eats and everything was thoughtfully packaged and arrived intact. A bit off the beaten path but worth the trip for this hidden gem. Highly recommended.

Scott F.

Yelp
I have eaten here 3 times and i have never been disapointed by the food, the drink, or the service. Highly recommended!

Susan C.

Yelp
It was our fIrst time at the restaurant, and I'd say a solid 4.5. The inside is a little plain, but the service is excellent, warml and friendly. Food is uniformly good with a few standouts that were excellent. The cheese and charcuterie is delicious, as are the shrimp, mussels and pork belly. My favorites were the chicken croquettes and the salmorejo soup. A great neighborhood place, and we'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Julian B.

Yelp
Great spot with low frills and super high quality food. Started w the potatoes and soup. Both excellent. Then octopus and mushrooms which were fantastic Steak and burger were also incredible. One of the most unique burgers I've had recently. Churros are a must. Sangria also great.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
Made my first trip to Atxondo today. Service was excellent. Covid 19 precautions were solid. Had the chicken, pretty good. Comes with small salad on top and a tangy green sauce on the side. The weekend steak and eggs looks tasty. Good addition to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Walter A.

Yelp
I should not say anything because I want to keep this place to myself. Atxondo provides a nice taste of Spanish food at a decent price. The sangria was tasty and refreshing. The food was prepared right. I recommend the mussels and olives. The restaurant prepared the best flan I ever had. A real flavorful custard.
google avatar

Derek C.

Yelp
After a 4 mile walk it was a pleasure to stumble on this restaurant for lunch/brunch. We enjoyed the sangria (twice), Salmonejo and two entrees. Oh and a postre. The staff was great. Food was great and I hope many folks will visit and help businesses such as this thrive. We will be back.

Maria B.

Yelp
Food was terrible, I order salmon and they burned it. Service so so. Ambience regular.
google avatar

Claudia B.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, I recommend this place. You will get the best Spanish food
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to try out Chef Bautista's spot last night and it did not disappoint. There are not many places in DC with truly authentic Spanish food so I am excited to see this place flourish. We started with the the mojito and margarita and were very happy with both. While we are not drink snobs, we do expect a properly mulled and balanced mojito, and this was just that. The margarita was also very good and tasted fresh and balanced. For food, we had the seafood paella which was truly exceptional. Having had paella in Spain and all over DC, I can say this paella is the real freaking deal. The seafood was fresh, the rice had just the perfect crisp to it, and the flavor profile was complex, with just the right amount of tomato and lemon to balance the seafood. The paella was topped with a garlic aioli, of which I've never had before on paella but I ended up really liking it. We will definitely be coming back very soon to try out the rest of the menu. Give this place a try, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Would give this place 0 stars if I could. Arrived for a 7pm reservation and after asking the waiter about our order at 8:30 we were told it would be another 30 minutes. Every other table in the restaurant had drinks and food coming out consistently yet we didn't have a single thing come out. Would seriously not recommend ever visiting this place.
