San Francisco’s Most Festive Spots for the Winter | Eater

"Bay Area music fans may know August Hall as a place to catch their favorite acts when they come through town, but the venue’s worst-kept secret could be the real star of the show. This season, music-lovers can catch sets from White Panda or Roosevelt and then slip upstairs, through the door that says “Relief from the glare of the stage,” and indulge in a cocktail and some quieter conversation in the Green Room. After the show, head next door (it’s connected so no need to go outside) to Fifth Arrow. Try the Dogtooth Cocktail, made with white rum, pisco, citrus, and fortified wine, for a perfect post-concert sip." - Vox Creative

We recently attended a work event at The August Hall in San Francisco, where they rented out the entire venue, and it was fantastic. The place features a live band and multiple levels of entertainment—at least three floors of fun. There’s a spacious dance floor and a roomy balcony overlooking the band, providing a great view. Downstairs, there’s a fun area with ten-pin bowling, arcade games, and a bar, plus you can watch the band on big TV screens from there as well. Overall, it’s a super fun venue with something for everyone and highly recommended for a great night out!

Google
Awesome venue with strong sight lines on the floor and in the balcony and great sound. My partner and I went to a show here last week and had a blast. The artists were good, the production team was excellent, and the drinks and bartending in the back were quick and easy. I would definitely recommend a show here. The location is also within easy walking distance of the Powell BART station.

Google
Amazing venue with beautiful acoustics. I would highly suggest watching shows here. Small enough that you get to experience the musicians and the room intimately but large enough to still have wow factor. Really beautiful historical building with tons of character.

Google
My family and I recently saw a show at August Hall, and we were incredibly impressed with this venue, especially their outstanding commitment to accessibility. My positive experience began weeks before the show when I reached out to inquire about accessibility accommodations. Seeing the show listed as GA, standing room, initially worried me, but Melissa from the box office was incredibly helpful via email, arranging for accommodated seating. Upon arrival, the wonderful service continued. Despite a slight mix-up with our group size for the reserved seating, the staff quickly and happily resolved it. They then escorted us to our seats, providing a helpful rundown of the venue's layout. Throughout the night, staff even checked in on us, ensuring we were enjoying ourselves. As someone new to mobility issues and still learning to ask for help, this kindness and caring was not only appreciated but deeply meaningful. Beyond the excellent service, August Hall is a fantastic place to see a show. The band sounded great, and the line of sight was excellent – even from our designated side seating, I had a clear view of the stage despite the packed floor. The balcony also offered great views. Bar service was quick and friendly, with reasonable prices for a venue of this type. And yes, even the bathrooms were remarkably clean for a music club! I would happily return to August Hall anytime for another show and am genuinely grateful to everyone there for making it possible for my family and I to have such a great evening together.

Google
Went to a show last weekend here at August Hall, and I really want to highlight the staff there. I'm not a San Francisco native, so I was incredibly anxious about the area, but the staff made me feel so safe and I can not express how much that made my night better. There was a security presence, but it wasn't overbearing, and the guards were so nice (shout out to T, she was way cool). It just added a layer of comfort in a very anxiety inducing situation. One thing that I wish I could give extra stars for was the water bottle policy. Everyone was able to bring in an empty water bottle, no matter the material (I brought in my metal one), and you could fill it with ice water at the bar area on the second level. No purchase needed, just bring the bottle, again empty, and fill up as many times as needed. I was also told you could bring in hydration packs as well, as long as they were sealed. Done and done. Most venues will charge you the price of a kidney for a bottle of water, so you roll the dice for dehydration, but this policy is just amazing. I wish this was standard. Thanks for the great time August Hall! I hope to be back soon!

Google
Beautiful place, great acoustics and lighting. Beautiful bar and clean. I would go back for another event. Even the staff was super nice, great personalities, and fast check in.

Google
I've been to two concerts here. Both were excellent experiences. We did the VIP for everclear. There was a spacious upstairs bar with cool antique decor. The staff was friendly. Great service at the bar. A free water station was available. Overall, it's just a great venue.

Google
Wow. This place is gorgeous. The staff was friendly. The upstairs was a fantastic view with bar, seating and restrooms, but the best acoustics are downstairs. Our concert was elbow to elbow people so we opted for upstairs but depending on what you are seeing standing downstairs might be better

Yelp
Sound is great, size is great, programming is great, staff are great... So why is the lighting awful? I've been to multiple shows here where the lighting feels like I'm a department store or an awkward high school prom/talent show. Why am I able to see the details of every air vent on the multi level ceiling in the middle of Nilüfer Yanya? Why am I able to discern the color of every piece of clothing of the person in front of me during serpentwithfeet? Is it because someone in management felt it was a bigger priority to show off every mosaic, carving, and cranny of detail in this hall than create an ambiance that actually makes you focus on the musicians? It honestly feels like somebody left house lights on by mistake but it's been too many shows now to where it can't be an accident. The result is an audience that isn't able to fully focus and enjoy the music in front of them as they're distracted by that one guy head banging to the totally wrong beat in the front row or that other person who is doing tons of trips back and forth from their spot to the bar or they feel uncomfortable and aware of their body movements and less inclined to dance. The artist must feel the same way! During the show tonight if you looked up, you could see certain color lights on stage and above the audience moving to accent the songs, but their choreography was for naught as it wasn't felt or seen at all because there was so much other light drowning those ones out and making the space so unfortunately bright. Including some pictures. Easy fix August Hall! I'll still come back because you have great bands and you make them sound great, but this weakness in lighting design is so unfortunate!

Yelp
Guilty, I wasn't super thrilled to check out August Hall, purely based on location but to my surprise, this has been one of my favorite venues in the city! Tokyo Police Club announced their final tour and I had to fulfill my middle school dreams. I typically don't care to watch an opener and show up a few minutes before the main show but Born Ruffians was a must. Conveniently located next to bart and a few bus stops, so plenty of public transit opportunities. There was a little line to get in but moved very quickly. Ticket and bag check was a breeze. The venue is small but spacious, has lovely architecture (fun fact! this used to be a movie theater), and the air conditioning in here was lovely. This was my first solo show and it was perfect for that! Crowd control was so great. Drink lines were not long (shout out for reusable cups). I even took a bathroom break during the show and managed to make my way back to my spot, how is that even possible! The sound in here could have been better but that wouldn't stop me from coming back. I gotta check out the second floor next time.

Yelp
Saw Stabbing Westward last night here at August Hall and I thought overall the venue was great. Staff were nice, sound was decent, place smelled good, bathroom clean. They didn't open the balcony probably due to crowd size and them wanting the floor more packed. Totally understandable but I was hoping to be standing up above to see better. Getting uber to come pickup was super easy. The street looked safe too.

Yelp
Went to August Hall for the first time last week to see IDK HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME in a sold out concert. Had a blast! The venue is a 5-10 minute walk from the Union Square Parking Garage. They stamped our wrists and checked our bags as we went in. There's a bar located on the first floor and another on the second floor. This particular concert was all GA, so first come, first served on both floors. I found a spot on the balcony near the stage and had a great view for the whole concert. There were also free water stations! (Stay hydrated!) The venue is pretty intimate compared to other concert venues I've been to, but I think it makes for a more fun experience since you're closer to the performers. It was my first time seeing IDKHOW live and they were amazing! Ended up buying merch too. Will definitely be seeing them again next time they tour!

Yelp
Went here in mid January for an Amber Liu concert, previous member of legendary KPOP group f(x), Asian-American singer that is very popular in China and the Far East, current soloist who performs in Korean, Mandarin, and English. Her SF show was entirely English. August Hall, previously known as Ruby Sky, is a smaller intimate music and dance hall with two public areas viewing the stage. First floor is primarily the dance floor and second is more like a quieter viewing area of the action or concert below. The second floor was closed for Amber's concert. Patrons go thru security to enter the facility and are checked and wrist-banded for alcoholic drinks if desired. The venue has good acoustics and the elevated stage is visible from the entire dance floor. There's a small seating area on the left side of the first floor. Bar is opposite of the stage. We had a very good time at the concert and felt safe and secure for the entire performance. Street parking can be a challenge but doable, just don't leave any valuables in the car. The Union Square parking lot is also a few blocks away.

Yelp
One of my favorite venues to visit in the city! Closeby to a BART station, good air ventilation, and the venue is small - which calls for intimate and good views from anywhere! I have been here several times now and every experience is smooth. Thorough security, good sound quality, and friendly bartenders. Love the vibes! Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Neat smaller venue that's been getting some great acts lately. The capacity, in my estimation, would be just shy of 1000. For those familar with venue sizes, it is probably very close to Ace of Spades in Sac. We saw Cannons at August Hall on Memorial Day 2024 and since the show was sold out, we stuck to the back of the hall, close to the bar. There is some limited seating on the side of the main floor, but those spots must have been taken very early on. However, since the venue is so intimate, there is no bad spot in the house. Also, the balcony offers some birds eye view for those that like that better. On the opposite side of where we were standing, I saw the food sign and there were some other guests walking around with pizza, so I'd guess that's what they have to eat. Sound system seems crisp and clear, with no distortitons or too heavy on the bass as with a lot of venues. The only two little complaints i had are the overwhelming smell of Fabuloso lavaner (which can be waay too much), and the drink prices ($15 for a beer). Relatively close to Union Square and parking garages, this makes August Hall one of the better spots to see a show in SF. Needles to say, we'll be back...as long as they keep their part and keep on booking great acts.

Yelp
August Hall is a beautiful venue in the heart of Union Square. Took my daughter here for her first concert to see Mod Sun on Sep 28, 2024. The other artist were No Love for the Middle Child, HonestAv and Lovely the Band. Everyone played so well and we all had an amazing time.

Yelp
Saw Matt and Kim here a while back. We showed up only 15 minutes before showtime so there wasn't a line to get in. We stood at the top balcony level and had a great view of everything. The energy on the first floor by the front would have been fun but I wouldn't have been able to see much because of taller people. Matt and Kim even came up to the second level briefly. Sound level was very very loud, so bring your attenuated ear plugs or regular ear plugs if you want to save your hearing for old age. Merch line was short.

Yelp
This used to be a favorite venue of mine, but last night they broke my heart. As I was going through bag check, their security person took a piece of my property out of my handbag and threw it into a trash bin while saying, "sharpies aren't allowed." I know this sounds silly, but this particular sharpie was actually very special to me. It was my "lucky" sharpie - my favorite artists have used it to sign things for me after shows for many years - I only use it for that sole purpose. If security had given me the opportunity to put it back in my car before they trashed it, I would have done so, because it's important to me. Even though it was only a sharpie, they shouldn't trash a person's property w/out giving the option to re-enter without it. Even TSA asks people if they want to finish a bottled water before they toss it. It's common courtesy, which clearly doesn't exist at August Hall. As I walked away from the bag check, a staff saw me upset, so I explained. She didn't apologize, just said I could go through their trash if I wanted to look for it and take it to my car. Despite being heartbroken, I opted not to dig through a bin of discarded food, snotty kleenex and wet garbage. To be honest, I didn't want it after it had been in that garbage anyway. August Hall has a long list of prohibited items, do they toss selfie sticks in the trash? Strollers? Skateboards? Drones? I'm pretty sure they don't, because they'd catch hell if they did. Just because my property was "disposable" doesn't give them the right to trash it and THEN tell me it's not allowed inside.

Yelp
This venue is terrible, smells like weed. Their policy is ridiculous - they say that you can check in and step inside and then you can go out and come back in. But they lie, they don't actually let you step out and come back in. The guy at the door and the person who claims to be the self proclaimed general manager "Josh" is extremely rude. Seemed outright racist and also intimidating, considering how he was talking to me. This is how they treat their guests, people of color anyway. They lie and they tell you that's how things are. I didn't have my physical ID on me but had the ticket and digital copy of an ID. Their argument was that they if they let me out with a reentry wrist band, I may get alcoholic drink outside and that's violation of CA laws. I could've gotten a drink before I entered the first time, they don't and can't check what you do before entering the venue. Just making stuff up, to get a power trip. He told me that "this" (meaning lying) is their policy and if I have issue with that, I am welcome to leave the venue

Yelp
This place is such a cool venue. Small-ish space with good sound for concerts and lots of spots to easily be able To see performers on stage. However, I have now been to two shows now and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back because the smell of cleaning product (I think fabuloso) is so strong that it's nauseating. I think switching cleaning product would make a huge difference. Also bring a coat when you come here--the AC is usually on full blast AND if you choose to stand in one of the furthest stage left or right areas, the lights stay pretty bright the entire show.

Yelp
Good customer services to all people regardless of the color of their skin. Respect goes a long way

Yelp
Very friendly staff for the kid's concert we attended. The place has tons of space so everyone could enjoy the show. It was clean and well kept. The venue is in a safe neighborhood and their is parking with security located directly across the street. I would recommend this place in the future to other fams looking for a fun time.

Yelp
Saw a great show here. Beautiful building, good sound system, two bars and tight security. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Awesome venue but I received an overcharge from the bar, bought 2 15$ drinks and confirmed the payment on the ipad, but then found a 51$ charge to my card. Tried to reach out on social media but didn't get a response

Yelp
It was ok, I hear it's like the independent but I felt it was like the regency. I got pretty close to the stage and made it past security pretty well. The sound system was super loud which I enjoyed. Everclear was awesome. They had free water which was cool. The drinks aren't expensive tho.

Yelp
Came here to see BandMaid perform live back in October 2022. I was really happy with this venue! I missed being in intimate rock concert environments, and standing close to the stage when BandMaid was playing was so great! This is a very lovely venue too that makes me remember why I love attending rock and metal concerts so much. It's walkable from Bart too.

Yelp
Updating previous review as they made an effort to make things right about the drink overcharge. Was just an accident. Cheers

Yelp
Quality: 4 Decor: 4 Service: 4 One of my favorite smaller concert venues in the city. The venue capacity is a little under 1000 people, but there is a beautiful 32-foot ceiling and 100-year architecture. I particularly like smaller venues since you can get up close to the artists during the show. Artists I've seen at this venue (most recent at top): Faouzia Neon Trees Broods The staff is mostly friendly (although the lady in the box office was rather curt and unhelpful when I asked for specific set times).

Yelp
The good: This place is really pretty. It's also, as far as I know, the only rock music venue in Union Square (as the area around Warfield becomes Tenderloin.) The place is clean, modern and nice, with cool artwork (a tastefully gaudy balcony and stained glass on the walls), and it's the perfect size to get some cool acts without getting overcrowded. The staff has always been super nice and sweet each time I've been here. The...not quite bad, but maybe shrugworthy: The lighting is always the same shade of blueish purple (or purplish blue). It was cool looking at first although there was a period where I happened to go to a few concerts in a row and the lighting got a little monotonous. YMMV. Also, there are some pillars near the back center that get in the way of seeing the stage if you are unfortunate to get stuck in that area. The ugly: $12 beers + tax and service charge (making the grand total $13.78) if you pay with a credit card. They used to be $9 on the other side of 2021. I know, inflation but $13.78 for a pint is excessive. At least they do always have a Fieldwork IPA on tap, but this price has sadly made me just stop buying drinks here and pre-game or after-game instead.
google avatar

Eoin B.

Yelp
I had my wallet stolen from my bag during a concert, and the person who stole it charged $100 at the bar during the show. I reported this to August Hall, and when I reported my card stolen and the transaction as fraud, August Hall chose to fight with my credit card company to pass off the transaction as legitimate, even when the receipt they submitted as proof was clearly not even close to my signature which my bank also noted. Again, August Hall was aware that I was a victim of theft at their establishment and they still chose to pass off a fraudulent transaction they processed with my stolen card as a valid transaction. I will never see a show here again, I'd rather wait to enjoy my time at a venue that respects their customers and practices good business.

Yelp
We finally had our first visit to August Hall and were very impressed. The first interaction was queuing to get in. A group of four more-or-less cut us off. It was not a big deal, but one of the security people stepped in to point out their indiscretion. We indicated it was all good, but were very impressed with the courtesy of the staff. The venue is lovely and all the vintage details have lovingly been restored. We wondered around and took everything in. The staff inside were very courteous and friendly. The bathrooms were immaculate. We opted to watch the show from the balcony, and there was great viewing from all around. The Sound was very good as well as the lighting. I would heartily recommend this venue if someone you want to see is playing there!

Yelp
I was positively blown away by this venue!!! The staff were all very professional and friendly. The sound was luscious. The venue is pretty and clean. Free water was on offer and canned water as well for a very reasonable price. You can also bring an empty reusable water bottle with you (but no food). The operations were smooth and orderly. Overall, very well run and managed. Excellent venue. The bougie truth of it is that I mostly go to the symphony and opera these days but in my youth I went to a lot of pop/rock clubs. What I remember about those clubs is that they were seedy and dirty, back in my day. I can work around that when I go by myself but I wouldn't want to bring my kids into that atmosphere, usually reeking of bleach and beer on a good day, sticky benches/seats, missing toilet stall dividers, and all that. So when I saw that there was an amazing artist who my middle school kids would love to see coming to August Hall, I sort of braced myself when I bought tickets for us to the all ages show. I figured it was going to be like the pop/rock clubs of my youth. August Hall turned out to be a shining example of how well these venues could be run! Sending huge thanks to the many staff people who made our night amazing! The sweet guy who saw my kids' enthusiasm and invited them to the meet & greet. So grateful to you! The security guard who kindly picked up something dropped in front of the stage and handed it to my kids. The meet & greet manager who gave my kids a set list from the concert. You all made our night one that we will never forget. As far as the neighborhood, when I was single and childfree I lived in the Tenderloin so I arrived fully prepared for the mayhem of the Tenderloin just in case. However, it is much more of a Union Square feel here. There are several well lit parking garages nearby, the lights are bright, and the streets are clean. There was a short line on the sidewalk to get into the show. There were several security guards outside of the venue as well. Overall, highly recommend to everyone!

Yelp
TL;DR - Beautiful venue, no reception I remember when August Hall used to be Ruby Skye... It was a fantastic venue then too to watch/party with EDM artists. Now, August Hall typically plays rock/alternative and I love that. I recently saw the band WET there! I love the spacious venue. I had no reception in there though - maybe its T-mobile? Also, if you are a corporate company - you can rent out August Hall to host parties or trainings. I did that for my tech company before. Also I ordered a "double" for a drink and was disappointed as hell, NOT worth the extra pricing.

Yelp
So impressed with my first concert at August Hall. Great sound quality, an intimate, beautiful venue, and extremely kind and attentive staff members from the door to the floor. We observed someone having a medical issue shortly before the show began and the staff attended to the individual immediately. Couldn't have had a better night, thank you!

Sue K.

Yelp
Highway Robbery! I just looked at my credit card pending charges for my one single cocktail and it says $25.57 before tip! This can't be right! The bartender served me a small cocktail in a small orange cup and flipped the iPad around for me to leave tip. I think she overcharged me for my one drink! Never have I ever paid this much and the pricing on the menu posted did not state such high prices either.
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
I told the security guard that I couldn't go through the metal detector due to having a medical device (pacemaker), she still made me go through the detector. If you're going to have security guards at least train them to recognize when someone says they have a medical device. This is the second time this has happened at this same venue and it is absolutely ridiculous that it happened even once. The people who train the security guards don't give two shits about anyone, they just want to collect a paycheck and call it a night.

Yelp
Seen quite a few shows here recently and overall it's a good venue. Not a bad view anywhere in the house, easy access to the bar, clean bathrooms, friendly staff. But the lighting for concerts is terrible. I've stood in many different spaces throughout the venue and lights are constantly in my eyes. Light the stage, not the audience... it's really distracting and makes it really hard to see the band. Also - they rely on strobes WAY too much. Anytime the music gets slightly faster someone slaps the strobe button and walks away. Honestly I'd give this place 5 stars if they fixed the stage lighting. I wanna watch the show, not squint my eyes and feel like I am being interrogated.

Yelp
Decent venue. Saw Covet, Hikes, King of Heck and Moxy the Band. It was fine. The sound was best where it usually is at live venues, in the middle where people eventually want to "mosh". But they have plenty of speakers in places where at other venues the sound is unbearable. The sides for example had their own PAs. That's also where the handicap area was, which was cool to see. Had the sides elevated about a foot with benches for those who want to sit. Upstairs the balcony also has a bar like the GA first floor. Balcony has more benches to sit on the sides and railings to lean on but the sound isn't as good as the floor. Venue is near plenty of parking garages and restaurants. Bathrooms are acceptably clean for a concert hall. I would recommend this place to someone if they really liked who was playing there. THE SHOW: headliner was Covet, who was without their bass player for some reason. Drummer Forrest was awesome with his audience contact and fun facts about frogs between songs. Referred to the bass track as "Digital Dave" . About halfway through covets set the guitar players amp (Vox AC30) blew up and they asked the other bands if they could borrow an amp. (That AC30 sounded AMAZING before it blew up, tubes I guess.) The Hikes singer and lead guitar player (Nay Wilkins) helped Yvette Young out and let her use her Quilter amp and 2x12 cab. After about 5 or 10 minutes of the drummer stalling in the best way telling comedic facts, they got back into playing and it was almost like that never happened. Really cool to see. Drummer got the crowd convinced that everyone had pent up chaotic frog energy that need needed to be purged by dancing and moshing. Awesome show.
google avatar

Shauncey D.

Yelp
The sounds quality was unbeleivably bad. All three bands had to do multiple sound checks during their sets/middle of songs. The headliner could barely finish their set. I have gone three times at this point and the first two the sound quality was not great, but passable. This was truly attrocious. It is a shame because it is a beautiful and historic venue. I hope they can get it together, I feel bad for any band that has to play there in this state. Noteably, the drinks are stupid expensive. I got one Titos Soda and a Stella and it was $35!!! The prices are not posted as well. They also would not allow the musicians to bring booze onto the stage?? I don't know where to start on how ridiculous and non sensical that is. People (including staff members) ended up buying them shots.

Yelp
I was at the Wolf Alice concert and the sound at this venue is horrendous and muddy. Although I stood in the front row, I could barely hear the vocals of the opener and the main act. The band even picked up on the bad sound and commented on it during the show. The atmosphere of the venue is nice though. An usher let me know about the downstairs joint bar, the Fifth Arrow. Their website stated that a minimum of a $20 purchase at the bar was needed for expedited entry to the venue, but the usher let me in even though I explicitly said I wasn't going to purchase anything. The bar is bowling themed and very modern. Lastly, mask wearing wasn't enforced that much. A press photographer had to be told to wear their mask and many concert goers were maskless even without drinks in hand.

Yelp
Well dang; thank goodness for a wonderful night out with a good friend last week, which led us to find August Hall, nestled in the Union Square area. Best of all, we found out Rick Ross was coming to SF the next day! Me: Oh Snap! Rick Ross is coming to SF tomorrow!" My friend: "Oh, I love that big man!" I looked at her surprised o_0 Funny thing was, I'm in love with him as well! UUHH (in my RICK ROSS VOICE) I pulled my phone out and long behold the tickets were CHEAP! The next day we were back in Union Square dressed to impress to see Rick Ross. Now, the venue is GORGEOUS! (I heard it use to be a club). I loved the décor and the acoustics were on point, plus inside was very intimate and had an upstairs and downstairs with a bar on each floor. Gotta' love it! I must back up and give props to the security for the fast check-in to enter the venue. Showed ID, scanned the ticket, checked purses and walked right in--Viola! Just like that. Upon entering, there was a stand where Rick Ross was selling his Hurricane book--Honestly, I would have also liked to see his alcohol hurricane bottle for sale there as well; I'm just saying'. We ordered a drink and headed to the front of the stage. Shortly after Rick Ross entered the building and the crowd went crazy. Now, the things I loved about the concert that helped them earn all 5 stars: 1. Rick Ross, of course! 2. The venue was very intimate, and it was a great crowd of people (not overcrowded) 3. The concert started and ended at a reasonable time 4. Bathrooms were clean 5. Bartenders know how to make a damn good drink! Dang, they were STRONG! Whoo! The tickets were an amazing price! I love that it was priced for everyone to attend! Okay, okay! I could go on and on! Honestly, I love this venue and can't wait to come back to see a more amazing artist like Rich Ross! UHHH! Yelp
Well it's about time I gave this place a review. To me, this place will always be Ruby Skye in my heart. Regardless, I really enjoy this place. The drink selection has improved over the years. Of course, the genre of music will vary depending on each night. They bring in different genres of music like EDM, Hip-Hop, Rock etc. When August Hall plays EDM, I will definitely be here.

Yelp
A really great venue! The staff was incredibly nice. They have water dispensers at the bar, clean bathrooms, and great vibes! I was skeptical at first, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Yelp
I absolutely hate posting shitty reviews. But I have to do this, Digable planets, what used to be an amazing hip-hop band was absolute garbage. One of the main reasons was the worst sound system I have ever heard any venue try to push off on an audience. This was a hip-hop group that really heavily relied on their percussion and their baselines, etc. You couldn't hear it. I'm not joking you could barely hear a fucking groove. So part of it was the band not giving a shit and the other part was August hall. I think if you are the venue and you booked someone Who couldn't give a shit about their sound, the venue has a responsibility to do something about it. I'm still blown away at how shitty that show sounded. Just awful just freaking the worst.

Yelp
The sound in this music venue is great. I saw Nosaj Thing, Dam-Funk, and Machinedrum last night. The music played ranged from drum and bass to funk with vocal and finally eletronic, glitch-hop type music. Music played with no distortions that I could hear with the high/mids/low range and I was mostly at the front and middle of the main floor area. Security didn't seem as bad as some of the reviews here mention. There's additional standing room and limited seating area off to the sides on the 1st floor. They had the 2nd floor closed off for this show. $14 for a gin and tonic at the bar.

Yelp
Manager Joe, was so awesome and helpful. He went above and beyond to help me tonight and I deeply appreciate him and his staff. This was my very first time at August Hall. I had a really good time, as this was my first night out on the town in two years. Thank you Joe! You are awesome! Hugs to you!

Yelp
The venue itself is pretty and the acoustics are good -- unfortunately, their bouncers seem to have a very hard time with IDs that aren't from California. You don't have to humble yourself, August Hall; some people really do come from out of state to see your shows. Those people like to drink and like in/out entry, too! Unfortunately, your bouncers, who either don't know Nevada is a state or are veritable Matlocks privy to a conspiracy to fake an ID just to get into some random venue in San Francisco that the TSA, four other Bay Area bars, and the Nevada DMV are all in cahoots with, deprived you of at least one drink sale tonight. They also deprived the poor main act performing of $60 in merch sales, since their merch guy's card reader was broken and I would've had to go to an ATM and come back, necessitating an exit from the venue. As someone who used to manage an act, myself, I understand the importance of merch sales and wanted to show my support for a bunch of phenomenal musicians...but August Hall had other plans in mind. Sorry, guys! Hopefully I get to see you at a venue that believes in good, old fashioned American commerce next time.

Yelp
Beautiful space, friendly bartenders, and ticket window lady was really nice. But the security was so invasive!!! The guy just started pulling stuff out of my purse, whereas most venues just look inside... He was just rudely yanking out stuff, and it was really invasive. I go out to see live music a LOT, to many venues in town, but taking this one off my list. Also, I could not find my ticket in my email, but luckily I did remember the last 4 digits of the card I bought it with, so it was easily found. But what if I couldn't? Stressful!

Yelp
Was excited to see Lil Skies on 2/6 but as we are waiting in line with our personal drinks a Karen(girl with blue hair and glasses) tells us we aren't allowed to drink In front of the venue?? So they proceed to take our drinks and dump them in the trash and asks me for my ID, but only asks me and not my friend. After then she proceeds to tell us we can buy drinks inside their bar (17$ per drink).... Once inside I ask the security nicely when the bar opens up and he just mugs me and asks if I'm over 21 and then says he doesn't know. Finally as I'm on the floor with my second drink in hand 1 hour later, the same guy who dumped out drinks outside comes up to me to check my ID again lol asks why I didn't have a wristband when they never gave me one and proceeds to tell me to go with him to get one in the front after already getting two drinks and being on the floor...ridiculous. Ruined the first half of the show for me honestly and wouldn't go back to that venue with a staff that seems to pick and choose who they want to give a hard time too. If you look younger than any of the staff who seem to be all pushing 30 make sure you have your ID somewhere they can all see so you won't be asked several times.

Yelp
I ventured to the newly redone August Hall to see an absolute favorite artist. It was my first time at the venue and traffic was atrocious getting here. Thankfully there are some parking garages that only cost an arm nearby so I didn't have to mess with circling in traffic to find a needle in a haystack parking spot nearby or end up walking 8 blocks. 7 blocks I can do like a champ, but 8 is my limit without a snack -just kidding of course ;) . I really love the look and feel of this venue. It has great views from multiple angles with no annoying pillars or posts obstructing the view. It is standing only except the alcoves underneath the balcony against the wall or against the wall in the balcony. Not a fan of that particularly, but it's a cool space, well cool as in the vibe. It did get unbearably hot in the front; you can take off a jacket but that's about it, and it didn't help much. They have a bar if you're thirsty with friendly bar tenders. Actually pretty much everyone that worked there including the security was friendly. Bathrooms for men and women have the same entrance. No hooks on back of bathroom doors for purses or backpacks and running out of toilet paper without it being a jam packed event-why??? The main floor was quite sticky when you walked on it but didn't dissuade people from sitting down while waiting for the event to start. Some people didn't like the sound system in their review; for this music event there didn't seem to be any issues, except for the annoyingly loud people talking during a quiet song. The place wasn't overly packed but of course, I must smell amazing people, because some dudes just can't figure out personal space and kept inching up on me every time I moved away like a bee on a flower swaying in the breeze. The flower being me, of course, but you already knew that didn't you dear discriminating reader. When I finally had it with Mr. No-concept-of personal-space, I meandered up to the balcony which ended up being much more enjoyable for me. The view and space allowed me to be contentedly mesmerized by the incredible music...

Yelp
I never came here when it was a club, but I love it as a music venue. I can walk to it from BART, there's two levels and it's a great size. It is smaller than the Warfield but bigger than The Independent. It's not massive but it's small enough to still be intimate. I think there's only one bar, which I could see being an issue for a big show but it was fine when I went. I thought the sound was good and the staff were friendly. Like most places in San Francisco, parking is basically impossible. But there is a ton of parking garages close to the venue. I usually park at the California Parking lots because it's valet and 24 hour covered parking. There is a restaurant and bowling alley, I heard it's cool but didn't actually go to either.

Yelp
I used to come to Ruby Skye all the time. The carpet was nasty and the sound was very distorted and muffled. When I heard it was being remodeled, I hoped for better sound so badly. I saw pictures, new wood floors and new stadium level speakers. I was very excited. I went tonight to see feed me and no Mana. No Mana's set was very quiet and the bass was overpowering with missing sub bass frequencies and very weak treble. It was such a poor sounding system, but because he was the opener, I was hoping it would improve when feed me got on. When feed me got on the sound was the same. Super weak bass, balance was off, low treble, very low volume. The old Ruby Skye speakers were bit and loud, but old and poorly tuned. The new setup looks nice, but is actually extremely weak. Feed me even seemed visibly upset at the low quality of sound. I hope they fix this issue, otherwise I will not be coming back.

Yelp
A fantastic new remodel of the old Ruby Sky nightclub. No more stinky moldy carpet. Fresh paint (nice touch with the gray and dark green colors), bottle service tables got removed hence the space felt larger. Neat new light and sound system. The drinks were well made. I liked the drink holders on the railings. Stoked to see a new show here again!

Yelp
Beautiful venue, amazing autistics, and polite/ helpful staff! My girlfriend hand a migraine and the staff took such great care of us. Jordan, the owner, responded directly to my questions. If I could give August ten stars I would! Thanks August Hall team!!

Yelp
I liked this venue! To think this was Ruby Skye used to be! It's cool that it's this beautiful music venue now! The sound was really good and there's ample space to dance. There is an upper level if you prefer to see the stage from above. There is one bar area so it can get congested if you want to get a drink. Near the sides of the venue, there are a few spots to sit if you need to. The bathrooms are clean! Overall, cool place to check out a show and dance!

Yelp
-on Wednesday March 2 2022 I purchased a general admission ticket for the Ty Segall show ----------------------------------------------- -at the box office I was told to show full proof of vaccination -as of February 1st 2022 California passed a new rule that in order to attend any private events you must be fully vaccinated with a booster shot as well 2 weeks after full vaccination was received -I was not aware of this new rule...as me being "fully vaccinated" with the Johnson & Johnson shot *only one shot is needed for full vaccination* but not having a booster I was told to speak to the current shift manager of that night working on March 2 2022...the manager explained to me that without the booster shot I was unable to attend the event. -which was understandable why I was not allowed by management to attend the event but without receiving what I paid for *seeing the event* I asked the shift manager for a refund which I was told to do by the shift manager himself on Wednesday 3/2/22 NOW COMES THE ISSUE------------------------- -the male shift manager for that night Wednesday 3/2/22 told me to speak with the window and the female employee at the window said "okay" and "that my refund is going to be processed" THIS IS THE ISSUE---------------------- -the female employee at the window DID NOT ASK FOR MY NAME OR INFORMATION OR GIVE ME A REFUND SLIP OR RECEIPT FOR THE REFUND I REQUESTED -I got angry and upset that I was not issued a receipt slip or refund slip receipt -I do not like theft, fraud or people stealing my money -I didn't not receive any EMAIL from august hall Sf WHICH THE MALE SHIFT MANAGER TOLD ME I WOULD RECIEVE 7-8 business days from the point or sale -I was not issued a receipt and your staff told me to "take a hike" in thee exact words -I respectfully became angry...no swearing no rude remarks to the August Hall SF staff...me simply as a customer of your business I was pretty much told to get the fuck out of their sight or they would call the cops on me for being violent or drunk which is absurd because I was not -all I asked is I do not trust them nor will I take their word that a refund will be issued without a physical receipt I was threatened with arrest which is an absurd and weak attempt at a power move of your employees part but after all of that I was still not promised a receipt -I threatened them with calling my bank which I called right there and then...my bank told me I would need a receipt for proof of refund and if given a receipt and not paid then the bank will reimburse me -but your male shift manager for Wednesday 3/2/22 told me that August Hall SF does not have a printer in the vicinity and they do not give out receipts WHICH IS INSANE FOR ANY BUSINESS!!! How can you not have printers in your business!?? How is it possible that when asked for a receipt I was threatened with arrest? A cheap excuse and power move to get me away? To steal money? Just because I am a fan of a certain artist does not mean I am just giving my money to that artist and venue for free just for the sake of I love the music Never ever have I been treated at any concert the way I was disrespectfully treated the way your staff treated me..and one of the "bouncers" *as they call them* told me to "get the fuck out or I'm going to beat your ass" ...which I did after I was confronted with violence Very sad and pathetic that your employees are bullies first of all...rude second of all and 3rd threatening for basic simple thing businesses do...issue point of sale transaction with receipts and issue receipts for refunds P.s...just because it's 2022 doesn't mean do not have a printer in your business...I suggest to get one or these refund issues without a receipt is going to continue to happen...let this be the last case you have with this issue

Yelp
This place is awesome! I had no idea how small and intimate a place it would be. I saw Brazilian Girls here last weekend with two fun openers. There is plenty of room to stand up front and dance (where I was), seating on the sides, and an upstairs if you prefer to watch from above. I didn't go to the bar this time, but it was located conveniently at the back of the main floor. Bathrooms were nice! The acoustics were good, the design and atmosphere was modern and enjoyable, and the general layout was simple. No getting lost! I can't wait to come back and see more shows here! Bonus that it's so close to BART, and I felt totally safe walking back alone at 12:30 at night.
