The Best Cajun and Creole Restaurants in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"This place is a longtime local favorite. Try the famous Black Box — there are many iterations of this dish, most including some combination of a low-country boil: crab clusters, shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. It also serves an array of boxes of fried and grilled Cajun favorites ranging from fish and shrimp to wings and sausage." - Courtney E. Smith

The food was delicious! I'm glad we tried it out. My only disappointment was that they don't have salads anymore. (Update the menu please) My son went BACK to get salad and was told they refunded the salad. If you don't have an item to sell please let the people know when they pick up their order so they don't think they're missing something. I might have ordered something else. Come on Aunty...

Google
I tried the steak and shrimp plate for the first time. It was SO much food that I couldn't finish the plate. The butter sauce was so good I drizzled it on everything. The establishment is small, and there's not a lot of room to sit. The floor was sticky but overall decent. If you come with a group, you may as well take it to go. The lady who took my order is a down to earth sweetie pie! I'm looking forward to stopping by for another plate!

Google
Catfish was amazing. Corn, the sauce, seasoning amazing. The crab and shrimp were over cooked. I went for Juneteenth. The experience was exciting. I will definitely return, not sure I will risk the crab next time. Not the typical eat in establishment

Google
A true hole-in-the-wall gem! The food here was seasoned really well—flavorful and cooked just right. You can tell they put care into their dishes. I do wish there was more variety when it comes to the seafood sauce options, and the limited seating and tight parking made it a bit tricky to get in and out comfortably. That said, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and craving something tasty and local.

Google
This was my 1st visit. The service was great, the wait time was very reasonable. Prices were also reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food. Ever order $50 worth of food and wonder where your money went towards? Well, Aunt Irene's Kitchens ain't that place. I ordered the 3 catfish and 7 shrimp dinner. Ok, let's just say this dinner can be 2 or 3 meals, depending on your appetite. My husband ordered the All fried dinner with catfish, shrimp, 6 wings, and lobster tail. Just go see for yourself. They have kool-aid and mixed drinks too.

Google
This place is THE PLACE to go for anything boiled or fried. We had Wings, a Large Lobster Box, a Fried Pork & Shrimp Box, Crack Cookies, couldn't stop eating. Don't come in a hurry because everything is made to order but MOST definitely worth the wait!!

Tonia Butler

Google
The weight is too long. Over an hour for my food. I'm a cook myself, and to wait that long, I just didn't understand. The lady was friendly and polite, but the need to engage with their customers more. Remember, the customers are buying your food without us. There would be no Auntie Irene. Customers' service goes a long way. Please don't get upset 😢 from what I write, but in brace change. I will come back again. Oh yeah, where are your desserts 🍨 🥧 🍦 🍡 🍧 🍩. Have a blessed day.

Google
I give this place a 5 because the food definitely makes up for the location and atmosphere. It is in south Dallas near the fair park. It is well worth the drive from anywhere. I could get the online ordering to work so I had to place my order inside. I got the black box fish order so it wasn't a long wait. Some people that were there before me was still waiting when I left. The food is wrapped in foil to keep it warm for the drive home. There was 4 catfish filets, two corn on the cob, and red potatoes with cheese. It was a lot of food that could definitely feed 2 or even 3 people. The inside is small and only a waiting area.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! The food takes a while to come out but it's very worth it. Flavor and seasoning on their food is in on point and the portions are huge. My go to is their black box (with no sausage) and it comes out hot and heavy in a styrofoam box. I adore the lemony butter sauce that it comes with that I order extra. Their shrimp and crab clusters are meaty and filling. I would recommend bringing your own scissors or crab crackers if you are going to eat there. My husband loves their hood burger, he says it's one of the best burgers he's had. We like these two items so much that we haven't ventured out to other items, but we will soon! This establishment is traditionally to go only, however, the other half of the restaurant where there's seating is owned by the friendly owner of Krazee cocktails, who will greet you with a smile when you enter the restaurant and is the maker of the best daiquiri in town! Make sure to try a few drinks from him and you can sit down and enjoy while waiting for your food, and he doesn't mind you eating there. His daiquiris deserve a review of its own, but it's very refreshing with real fruit bits inside and is perfectly strong. The price is fair with it being $10 each, in nicely packaged to go bottle. I've tried lemon henessey, strawberry lemonade, and pineapple daiquiris and they are all so good. Anytime I think that I've found my favorite flavor, I'm always pleasantly surprised with the next flavor I try that it's hard to pick. People are welcoming and friendly here and it's a good vibe with good food and drinks.

Yelp
Nothing infuriates me more than spending a lot of money of food that isn't good. I ordered the black box and it was SO disappointing. Flavorless. Overcooked shrimp. Dry crab legs. An overwhelming amount of green onions. I tried to use the special sauce to help with the flavor and it's a pungent lime/lemon sauce. Not a fan. Not to mention I spent almost $50 for 1 crab cluster, a few shrimp, a sausage corn and potato. I wish I understood the hype but I don't, so I won't be back. (FYI: I am originally from Houston so my critique on seafood can be a little tough but only because I'm used to high quality. Do with that info what you'd like)

Yelp
Amazing food from seafood, pork chops, wings to even burgers. Fast and friendly service. Located in one of the older neighborhoods in Dallas, TX . In a small quant space.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Everything was well seasoned and freshly prepared. The sauces are amazing! This place is worth the 4-hour drive from Hoston! I will go back e-v-e-r-y time I'm in the Dallas area! I only wish they had larger building, as they were quite busy and we had to wait a long time for the limited seating. I have to say it's well worth the wait and I'll be waiting whenever I have to in order to get m yummy food!!
google avatar

Shan H.

Yelp
Seafood was overcooked. Flavor was good. The sausage was really good. Definitely pricey so be prepared to spend more than $35 pp. The parking is limited but there is no charge. Location is near the fairgrounds. They serve premixed drinks in a bottle that is well prepared.

Pat W.

Yelp
February 9, 2025, we were celebrating two birthdays and ordered two boxes of food. Port Chops/Fish, Crab legs, sausage, corn, potatoes Shrimp. All was seasoned to perfection. The only draw back is that the Shrimp was not cleaned and it took away from the experience. We will order again but not with shrimp. Plan on spending plenty of money. The wait time was about an hour.

Yelp
Believe the hype y'all! Aunt Irene's is the best Cajun/creole food spot in Dallas. I've been here multiple times and have never been disappointed. EVERYTHING is so good!! The flavors are bold, soulful & unique. If you love flavor, then you'll love it here!!! Besides food, it seems always busy but there's never a long crazy wait and the hospitality is always great. What I also love about Aunt Irene's is how vast & diverse their menu is. There is so much to choose from, and all of it is good!!! You must try it for yourself, if it sparks your interest.
google avatar

Yelp
There are not enough words to describe how great and comforting this food is. I love the cakes and crack cookies too!! Just awesome food. Every time.
google avatar

Tashana L.

Yelp
Aunt Irene's is my guilty pleasure. I spend my cheat days in fried food heaven with no worries in the world and Aunt Irene's always hits that spot. It's a very small place and usually has a line. I order ahead online then pick it up or I doordash it. Service is friendly. I've never had issues with my food. The food is WELL seasoned and flavorful. The crack wings are by far my favorite wings in Dallas. The wing box is a great value, takes me 2 days to finish the whole box by myself. Must try, but don't get addicted and eat it everyday!

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS STRAIGHT UP SINFUL! I did not get a single picture of my food, because I was starving. I ordered enough of food for 4 people and ate in my car, so that didn't leave much room for picture taking. The area is a bit sketch, I won't lie. LOL. But I wouldn't say I felt unsafe. Ordering was a bit confusing, because everything is such fast pace and it doesn't make you feel comfortable asking questions looking like the amateur who doesn't know how to order. So, I kinda hung out by the window while trying to figure out what to order and finally someone gave me some direction. Whew! I placed my ordered and waited about 20 minutes to experience the magic. The food was nothing to play with. I ordered the fried corn, fried catfish, fried shrimp, crack cookies, and bread. When I tell you I put that food DOWN, I am not playing. Every single piece of everything was fried to perfection and seasoned with immense love. And then politely put me to sleep for 3 hours! My only complaint about this place is: 1) you can't dine in, 2) there was only canned soda for drinks. I'd assume a place like this would at least have some type of house made punch, 3) the cookies were a bit hard...and $10. And, 4) there wasn't many smaller portion options. I wanted fried shrimp too, but they only came in an order of 15. So guess what I did? Ordered AND ate 15. LMAO. But that was just plain greedy. I wish there would have been like a 5 piece option or something. Other than those few things, I 10/10 recommend eating here. It will be on my list every time I am in the area!

Yelp
The food was amazing!!!! Drove from Texarkana and it was definitely worth it! Freshly made and delicious great service

Yelp
Okay I will preface this by saying that my rating also factors in conveniency and service: - i got the black box and the wings/fried fish combo Black box: 9/10 flavor, but overall: 7/10 bc my shrimp was a little overcooked, and there's nothing special about the sausages. Their seasoning is truly cajun, so if you're expected a very wet garlic sauce, then this is not it. I wish all of the crab and shrimp had just a little more sauce, but they do provide butter on the side instead wings/fish combo: 5/10 We ordered the aunt irene special flavor for the wings and the hot lemon flavor for the fish. There was barely any seasoning on our wings, and almost too much on our fish (it got soggy really quick). The cheesey potatoes that come with it is good. Nothing super special Overall, for the hassle of driving over to south dallas, I probably won't return. There's 1 parking spot in front of the restaurant, and it took us an hour to get our food (even though they told us 20). Don't get me wrong, the flavor of the crab and shrimp was really good. I would probably say best cajun seafood i've had, but it's honestly too difficult to get their food (out of the way)

Bill R.

Yelp
The food is delicious. The prices are high. No place to eat inside. It took almost two hours after placing our order to get our food. There is no ambiance.
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
Absolutely the BEST fried chicken I've had. Seasoning is on point!! It's busy so go early.

LaToya M.

Yelp
My daughter rode an hour to get Aunt Irene's seafood for my birthday. The meat from the crab legs was hard which I've never heard of. The shrimp was sour and the meat stuck to the shell. I contacted them right away to let them know that the food was no good. I was told to send them a picture of the food and receipt and they will refund the charge. I contacted them a week later and they claimed that food was missing out the box. I asked them to offer something since the purchase was expensive. I was blocked. I've eaten there for years and I am very disappointed that they are not willing to offer anything for selling bad food.
google avatar

LaToya A.

Yelp
I don't know why it took me so long to go, but the service and food was delicious. The wait was about 20 minutes for a lobster box and the hood burger with wings.

Diane S.

Yelp
The food and service was great! Wait was only about 40 minutes. Seating was available.
google avatar

LaPeshaa C.

Yelp
I'd had this place bookmarked for a while. After seeing them all over social media I knew the next time I was in Dallas that this is where I would be eating. I ordered the black box and my hubs got the all fried box. My black box was delicious and the portion was so big the box wouldn't even close. The flavor on my seafood was great I enjoyed every bite. As far as the all fried box only a couple of the items in there were good. The shrimp were fried to hell, so rubbery and nasty. They were inedible. The corn was a soggy mess. The lobster was over cooked as well but the flavor on that thang was awesome! The chicken was great! The wait for our food wasn't bad maybe about 20 minutes. Go try it out I think you'd really like it. The flavors are bussin, just make sure they don't over fry your seafood!
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I visited Irene's in Desoto twice in February and they were sold out of everything. My third visit, I could see why they sell everything. We ordered fried fish box and lobster box and both were excellent. The owner was there and she said she went over inventory. I think you should try ordering on line to make sure you get a box. The food is seasoned perfectly and the portions are plentiful. This place doesn't have dine in, your food will be excellent temperature.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
I think the service was really good the inside is small so I would probably just get it Togo and eat at home next time if I was alone . I got a large black box it was okay. I ordered spicy it wasn't as spicy as I'm used to but if you like a little spice then you'll like it. My mom and dad got an all fried platters and wings and fish platter. The fish was really good. They both rate theres a 9 I rate my seafood a 8. I would definitely recommend trying it out if you haven't. They also sell koolaid pickles and cocktails I don't really like pickles but they loved them I would definitely recommend trying this place out.
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
The location was not open and as we waited in our car someone came and opened the restaurant. The food was so good and the staff was nice. It was on a Sunday and they had on gospel music. The food took a very long time to be ready.
google avatar

Randall M.

Yelp
This spot has some of the best food I've had in DFW. I guarantee you won't be disappointed grabbing a bite from here. This spot is a lil stretch from my side town so I loaded up on a few options while there. I had the crab legs with shrimp fried pork chops with shrimps. Everything was super delicious and food was fresh. They have parking located in the lot on side of building all food is cooked to order so it's a little wait but wasn't super long. If you want something good head down to south Dallas and eat here.
google avatar

Michell H.

Yelp
1st timer here, been hearing about it, was volunteering in the area and decided. Everything is cooked to order...when I unwrapped the double foiled box...the food was BUSTING out the box and would not close!! Everything piping hot, well seasoned and delishous!! Will definitely visit again when in the area. Only reason not 5 stars is due to they did not open until about 12:30ish, supposed to open at 11a per Yelp.
google avatar

Brent G.

Yelp
Dre recommended and I came running. Amazing flavor. Best cajun seafood I've ever had. Service was nice and polite. No current indoor seating it looks like, so it was a battle eating in the car and not making a mess lol. I'll be back.
google avatar

Amaya R.

Yelp
I ordered the all fried box, some crack sauce and a koolaid. The koolaid was great. Everything else on the other hand ??? The all fried box was very disappointing, mostly because the whole reason i bought the damn box was for the lobster. The lobster was rubbery and the only thing "seasoned" about it was the breading. Which, by the way, is shell on. Yes. They fry the whole lobster tail, shell and all. The actual meat was tough and unseasoned. Tasted like i was eating rubber. The fried shrimp was also over cooked . The fish is okay and the chicken and corn were meh. I had such high hopes for this place too
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
Would not recommend. Although the staff were incredibly nice the wait time was horrendous and we were missing items (large order) not to mention we did see a mouse run across the waiting area.. I do my best to support local but I don't think I could do this again. We also ordered bag meals assuming their would be sauce/boil bag but it wasn't. The potatoes, crab legs and corn were in a Togo container and to us seemed dry. Not what we were expecting for a steep price tag.
google avatar

Kyriel W.

Yelp
Y'all I'm the eat in the car as soon as i sit down type of girl so when i visited this spot i didn't take pictures but i did make quick videos opening the boxes. This is a black owned soul food restaurant. When you walk in you order at the window, then to your left is your grandma's dining room. That's what it felt like to me! The music was great and the cooks were enjoying themselves while they prepared the food. When i received my food y'all i thought they had done wrapped up 2 Togo boxes in aluminum foil! What they did was pile my plate up to the tip top so the box was unable to close which is why they wrapped the heck out that box, which also controlled the hot temperature of the food. Yall can see in the clips below what i got and how it tasted. ‍ i have no complaints and this is by far the best wings, pork chops and fish I've ever had out of the DFW area!
google avatar

Catina C.

Yelp
Would love if it was consistent. The Black Box is everything. Irene's seasoning is unmatched. Burgers great here. Service worth a smile but it is sometimes a long wait.... and it's worth it. Only one bad food experience. I love that this building has more places to sit. People come from all over to eat Aunt Irene's.
google avatar

Yelp
The decline!! Standard not met: Cooking equipment free of encrusted grease Standard not met: Cold Hold (41øF/45øF or below) Standard not met: Ventilation hood-prevent grease dripping Standard not met: Clean Sight and Touch Standard not met: Handwashing signage Standard not met: Damaged Equipment Standard not met: Floors/walls/ceiling/nonfood dirty
google avatar

Devan DLeg L.

Yelp
Overall the food was a 6.8/10. It was good enough to eat and the meals seemed consistent but not anything that just WOW'd me. But the service was decent, food came out fast and its something that you could easily get to eat. The togo process is abnormal and If you are looking for some unordinary or spectacular taste I'd say keep looking.
google avatar

Porcsha L.

Yelp
When getting seafood, Aunt Irene will make sure you have more than enough! I got the Lobster box and it was filled! The Shrimp, corn, and sausages we so tasty that I was grateful I had some for the next day Oh and I'm so happy that they're on Door Dash now! I was able to order and get my food delivered! The excitement of my Friday night
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
This is my soul food spot!!! My wife and I moved to Texas from California 6 months ago and it took us this long to find a soul food spot where ALL OF THE FOOD ON THE MENU IS AMAZING!!! If you are diabetic, don't order their sweet tea or lemonade/kool aid. Your levels will be high through the new year. Hehehe
google avatar

Sherri P.

Yelp
First of all Great Customer Service! The lady at the window made you feel welcome with the biggest smile. I ordered the hood burger and it was amazing! I can't wait to visit the Desoto location again!
google avatar

Alicia M.

Yelp
OMG this place hits the spot every time! Flavors, crunch, and portions are all good! I recommend the black box and the all fried box. They have fried corn y'all and I was surprised the snow crab is so fresh tasting. I visit during the week to avoid any long waits times. Also I order online to make a quick in and out pick up. Location is a mom and pops kind of spot and it's also in the hood so don't be surprised of your surroundings lol if you know you know. Plan on spending about $80 on 2 plates it can seem a bit pricey but for the flavor and portions it's well worth it. Customer service is 7/10.
google avatar

Devon S.

Yelp
That all fried plate was crazy good and had my plate in like 15 mins after waiting like 10 mins to order and I was first in line lmao but fire af Cali boy
google avatar

Markisha B.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place a 0. The shrimp was super over cooked so I didn't even eat a whole piece of shrimp. The crab tasted fishy like someone put fish sauce in the boil. The sausage was very bland, no flavor. I have NEVER wasted seafood as it's my favorite meal. This was a 1st for me and I was pissed cause I ordered an extra cluster of crab legs to not even be able to eat them. Crazy thing is, I have been waiting over a year to try this place. I finally wasn't too far and had time to stop by on my way home. So many people raving about this place I was so disappointed. Is this how Dallas style crab boils are? If so, I will NEVER again.
google avatar

Jahnesha N.

Yelp
As much I want to always support black owned business sometimes we have to be real with eachother. I'm sorry but Opening doors 30mins after you are supposed to be opened is really unacceptable. My cousin had to call the desoto location for them to call this one to tell them to open up. No greeting or anything as we first walked in, there were women with bonnets on and men with ski masks. Very unprofessional. A woman then proceeded to tell us "they aint got no food yet so she cant take our order for another 30min". We already drove a hour to get there so we waited. However the fried lobster, fried corn, and fries were delicious. The shrimps were a little salty and the chicken lacked flavor. The fried pork chop sandwich was a little chewy and lacked flavor as well. (Was also told they were out of bacon so it didn't come on the pork chop sandwhich like the original one). The other ppl In line said the desoto location was better so I would definitely be willing to give it a try.
google avatar

Cheryl B.

Yelp
Desoto location. Ordered honey garlic wings. All i can say there was no garlic at all! Taste like fried wings absolutely zero seasoning other than being smothered in honey. Will never order that again.
google avatar

Yasmin S.

Yelp
I got the black box from here, and I'm just going to say I was disappointed. I've had many different seafood boils around the country, but this was not good. It was lacking sauce, and the crab barely had meat, and the shrimp did not taste fresh. The food was definitely on the drier side. Maybe I should've asked for extra sauce? What I did like about the food is that it was a great portion for the price. There was a good amount of each item included in the box.

Maurice D.

Yelp
The link basket is a big no. Links are cheap and seemed to be filled with a tripe filler. The old Good Luck link basket has fallen completely off and I was looking for a replacement. Rather than giving 4 links, I'd prefer the standard three links with a better quality link. These are cereal that you might as well put in a bowl and pour milk over. Even my grandson rejected it and he's like Mikey, he will eat everything. I had to beg my wife for some of her burger, which I did like. Not worth $16. Lastly, customers should have to hear the profanity from the back while standing there waiting.
google avatar

Lionel B.

Yelp
I was at the location on Canal. I got take-out and it was average. It was not bad, it just not that memorable. If you are hungry, it will hit the spot. But there are better places to eat on Canal.

Eva R.

Yelp
Great food Always taste so good.order the corn it's the best Love the chicken The crab legs are good
google avatar

Janee' T.

Yelp
The was some good food. I got the crab box and a fried lobster tail on the side. The crab box came with 2 clusters lots of sausage a potato and ear of corn. It had good flavor, the sausage tasted like real meat and not filler. The crab cracked fairly easily and it was so much seasoning on the shell which lead to the meat being seasoned cuz it was all over my hands from cracking. I wasn't crazy about the lobster tail, I thought it would've been pulled from the shell and then deep fried but instead the whole thing was battered and fried and I didn't care much for that. The sale crack cookies and they are some of the best cookies I've ever had. The inside is small and it's no room to dine in. But while we waited they had the music popping. The cashier was nice enough, not rude but not friendly either, she just was. There was a man walking around handing our food, selling the leftover mixed drinks, and interacting with folks, he was very nice and likeable. I advise getting there at least 2 hours before they close. The internet says the close at 8, we walked in at 6 and the cashier was yelling to lock the door cuz no other customers were going to be able to order. It took about 30-45 minutes for our food. My sister ordered the lobster box and the crab box with no sausage, cookies , and a mixed drink. We were the last customers to get our food. When they brought my sister hers she was informed they ran out of lobster so they gave her a lot of crab, a piece of cake, and another bag of cookies. Yes it was a nice gesture but what should've happened was them informing my sister they couldn't fulfill her order and gave her the option for a refund. Her sole purpose for going there was cuz she wanted lobster, so needless to say her $50 for the lobster box was a waste, she didn't even like the crab. It was strange as to how they decide who gets what because the ppl that ordered behind us in line ordered 2 lobster tails and they got their food before us without a problem. We really didn't like how that went but we just kept it pushing. Like I said the food was good, I'd probably go back and even try something different on the menu. I'm not so sure if they will see my sister again.

Yelp
Don't walk,,,,Run yo big back to Aunt Irene's. This place is sooo good and authentic. Nobody has flavors like this place. Been down with them since Ervay Street.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
If you don't know, make the trip. down South and find this slice of heaven. Seafood was great, and it was ready for pick-up when I arrived.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
I ordered a Hamburger at the Desoto location and it was horrible put together. The bread was soggy with to much mustard. I threw half of the burger away because it wouldn't stay together. I was very disappointed

Cha D.

Yelp
I love the food here. Takes a lot of time so the wait can be very lengthy at times. The food is delicious. Just plan accordingly. It is worth the wait.
google avatar

DaQuita H.

Yelp
The drive is a bit far for me it was me and hubby first time trying here. It's not an ideal neighborhood and the parking is scarce. I don't think my food was worth the 75-80$ we paid but it was the experience we were looking for. Although, we aren't Dallas natives we had heard a lot about this place and decided to give it a try. The parsley was a bit much and I could of went without it being so much. I wouldn't mind trying here again I would just get a different meal.
google avatar

Meechelle F.

Yelp
I must say that I was very impressed. The boxes were stuffed and more than enough for one person to enjoy. When I tell you my crab was bussin OMG I was a very happy camper. The shrimp, potatoes and sausage were flavorful. The corn and Cajun eggs had seasoning on it but it tasted a lil bland to me.... You know how we Creoles are about our seasoning and seafood!!! My husband enjoyed the Shrimp & Fish box. He said the seasoning was good but just a lil heavy which made it a tad salty. The veggies were awesome and hot just like he likes them. He wasn't to keen on the Cajun eggs saying they had no taste or flavor. The wait time was great compared to the weekend wait. The inside was clean, nice and smelled great. The employees had on gloves, mask and the proper attire to prep your food safely. Masked had to be wore to enter and order. They were practicing social distancing. Once your order was placed you waited in your car. The delivered your order curbside once it's done. The prices were fairly reasonable for the food and the amount you receive. We will definitely order again and try the other boxes. I'm so looking forward to the all crab box
