Designed from the start to feel like home both aesthetically and spiritually, it serves as a safe, nurturing space where Black patrons — including queer, creative, curious, tired, and joyful folks — can be received with care; people come not just for the food but to feel seen and safe. After the 2024 election the cafe became a vital site for emotional processing and community healing; built without outside capital, the owners are deepening their commitment by expanding their Brooklyn location and collaborating with like-minded Black-owned businesses to support broader community-building efforts." - Shani Hillian

"Many of the best vegan restaurants are inherently innovative, and Flatbush Caribbean restaurant Aunts et Uncles is always surprising us with what they can churn out of their plant-based kitchen. Hearts of palm are transformed into fresh, herbaceous lobster rolls or subbed for saltfish in a fresh bake, and the dairy-free dough used for their patties is surprisingly flaky.
