Vegan eatery with Caribbean-inspired plant-based fare & cocktails

"Run by Nicole and Mike Nicholas in Flatbush, this cafe centers vegan cuisine and an atmosphere that honors Caribbean heritage and Black creativity. Designed from the start to feel like home both aesthetically and spiritually, it serves as a safe, nurturing space where Black patrons — including queer, creative, curious, tired, and joyful folks — can be received with care; people come not just for the food but to feel seen and safe. After the 2024 election the cafe became a vital site for emotional processing and community healing; built without outside capital, the owners are deepening their commitment by expanding their Brooklyn location and collaborating with like-minded Black-owned businesses to support broader community-building efforts." - Shani Hillian
"Launched by Flatbush locals, the vegan cafe Aunts et Uncles also functions as a design store with clothing, magazines, and more. The menu pays homage to owners Michael and Nicole Nicholas’s Caribbean heritage: There’s a cauliflower dish with peanut sauce; fishcakes made seafood-free, and bake-and-saltfish using hearts of palm." - Eater Staff
"Aunt et Uncles is a casual vegan cafe in Flatbush that serves things like matcha lattes, espresso, mac and cheese, and breakfast sandwiches. When you enter this Brooklyn spot, you’ll feel like you just walked into a fancy boutique. There’s a bookshelf full of art books, the pink velvet sofa, gold-wrapped cafe tables, and pastel-colored chairs look like set pieces from the first Austin Powers movie." - will hartman, bryan kim, kenny yang
"Many of the best vegan restaurants are inherently innovative, and Flatbush Caribbean restaurant Aunts et Uncles is always surprising us with what they can churn out of their plant-based kitchen. Hearts of palm are transformed into fresh, herbaceous lobster rolls or subbed for saltfish in a fresh bake, and the dairy-free dough used for their patties is surprisingly flaky. The Brooklyn business is also a concept shop, where you can leisurely peruse through the clothes and books for sale while someone behind the counter makes you a chagaccino." - neha talreja, nikko duren, kenny yang
"Aunts et Uncles, a concept shop brought to you by local tastemakers Nic and Mike Nicholas, invites you in with its plush interior and plant-based menu. Pull up for coffee, the elevated Au (veggie) burger, mofongo, or cocktails. The space also curates books and magazines, making it the perfect place to unwind in the heart of Flatbush." - shelley worrell 31
