Austhentico Review - South Menchaca - Austin - The Infatuation

"Located on South Menchaca in an area Austhentico has dubbed “SoChaca” (let’s hope that doesn’t stick), Austhentico is a trailer specializing in Spanish-inspired sandwiches and tapas. That means dishes like bocadillos with jamon serrano or Spanish chorizo, patatas bravas, and tortilla Española.  " - Nicolai McCrary

If you love Spanish food and are missing the food you tried in Spain, this is your spot. We got the jamon Serrano and cheese croquetas and they were FIRE. Also the paella de marisco was so goood and don’t forget to order a jamon iberico sandwich too. They were so friendly and gave us some great recos when deciding what to eat. We’ll for sure be back! VIVA ESPAÑA!

Google
This is like going to Spain without needing to use your passport. Luis, the owner introduced himself and made us feel like we were back home in Spain. They have the best croquetas I've had in the US and the fact that you can eat outside and enjoy a nice evening there is just amazing. We will be back as soon as we can! Mil gracias por hacernos sentir como en casa, Luis!

Highly highly recommend stopping in to have a meal at Austhentico! Hard to believe you can get this high quality of a meal in such a casual atmosphere. As someone who LOVES Spanish food but is usually disappointed by stateside options- I can say this is the most authentic food you can get. The owners here brought Spain to Austin- literally. We ordered the seafood paella and I’m literally scraping the pan as I type lol It reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking (but ahem, way better!). Also had the croquettes which were recommended and soo good. They literally melt in your mouth. Enjoy if you’re able to make it by, if I lived in Austin this would be a regular stop!

Google
This has probably been my most authentic experiences of Spanish food in the US. Usually it’s intermixed with Mexican or Amerindian cuisine, not the case here. I had a Belgian blond beer together with the food truck’s tapas which were absolutely fab.

Google
A literal hole in the wall thats the closest you'll get outside Spain itself. Authentic and well prepared. It captures the "casualness" of a true tapas bar as they exist in Spain. The bocadillos are simply made yet full of flavor. The gambas al ajillo sizzle in their plate and have an amazing explosion of flavor. The patatas bravas don't skimp on crunch and sauce like at other restaurants in town. Everything is delivered with truth; representative of the purpose tapas serve across Spain. Head to Mort Subite for a pour of your favorite Spanish wine to accompany these amazing flavors.

Delicious food and great chef. It is a food truck behind the Belgian beer bar, but you’re able to sit at a table and dine in.

Great vegan options and very generous portions. Indoor or outdoor seating.

It was our first time trying Spanish food and it was delicious! We especially loved the Bombas, the beef as well as the vegan (soyrizo) option. They went so well with our favorite beer La Trappe 💛 Also I have to mention the guy taking our order, I’m not sure if he was the owner but he was super nice and sweet and made us feel welcomed.

Yelp
This food truck is located in the back courtyard area of the Belgian pub, Morte Subite. Outside of Spain, I haven't had truly authentic Spanish food since I lived in Pittsburgh. Yep, that's right! I digress. The food is smack you in the face delicious! Literally love everything on the menu from the omelette to beef Bombas, ham croquettes, and the charcuterie plate. Fresh, imported ingredients that bring travel memories back as though we're actually back in Spain. The chicken croquettes are to do for. So since they're located at a Belgian establishment, they also serve authentic fare from Belgium. The Flemish frites are spot on! Served with a homemade andalouse sauce that sends the tastebuds into orbit. I can't give them enough stars!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Tortilla Española, and the one here is just as good as I remember from when I was in Spain! I HIGHLY recommend the Mussels and Fries. Whatever oil they used to fry them in was so tasty. Super oily but with amazing flavor. Although the place is a food truck, it's located right next to a pub where you can take your food in and eat with air conditioning. The service is super quick and friendly too. Will be back!

Yelp
If you enjoy tapas, run..don't walk to this food truck. The food here is incredible. The truck is located behind Mort Subite (A Belgian Bar) off of Congress & 4th Street. You can walk through the bar or also park in the back alley if you'd like to get take out without having to park on the busy main street. You're able to order your food at eat it on the patio or inside the bar, which is nice on a hot day. Back to the aforementioned food, the aioli for the patatas bravas is delicious. The potatoes themselves were cut to the perfect portion and fried to the perfect level of crispiness. The jamon croquettes were creamy and exquisite. The taste of the bocadillo de jamon was delectable and the bombas were great with the sauce. I want to return and try the paella. For some reason, Spanish restaurants don't tend to stick around too long in Austin which is a shame because it's one of my favorite cuisines. So please go see for yourself how amazing the food is here!

Yelp
Austhentico needs more hype! My best friend studied abroad in Europe and said she was really craving patatas bravas, which is a really popular breakfast item in Spain. This food truck is pretty hidden, and it's also connected to a bar but you'd have no idea there was this delicious food truck right behind the bar. I've passed by this area hundreds of times and had no idea Austhentico was here. The patatas bravas were SO good. It was my first time trying it, but my friend said it was really authentic and brought back a lot of nostalgia. I love how it looks dense but it's actually quite light, and the sauce it comes with is delicious. We also ordered mussels and frites because the chef recommended it, and it was so good! I thought the pricing was really fair for how many mussels you get. I'm not even normally a mussel fan, but they cooked it really well and it's seasoned lightly as well. The fries were the star of the show. I have no idea what oil they use to fry the fries, but my friend and I couldn't stop raving about them. They're so nice and deserve all the business. Please come give them a visit!

Yelp
If you want authentic Spanish tapas then come here. I've been here several times and it always so delicious and consistent! My favorites are the croquettes, Spanish tortilla and the beef bombas. Chef Luis is amazing and so nice! I would give more stars if I could. 100/10!!

Yelp
I can't believe it's taking me 3 years to finally check out this place! The paella was delicious as well as the croquettes. I would definitely get both again! It is tucked behind a cute belgium bar. The staff was very kind! They speak English and Spanish. The vibes are very moody/sexy with dim lighting. I definitely will be back!

Yelp
A solid 5/5. I cannot rave about this place enough. It was quite the drive for us to eat here but it was well worth it. I did place an order in advance as I've never been here before and wasn't sure if there was a wait. The food was ready upon our arrival. We definitely over ordered because everything on their menu looked so delicious and we wanted to try it all. No regrets. Just from eating the food, you can pretty much taste the passion that had went into preparing the meal. - Bombas - 5/5 - Flamenquin - 5/5 - Chicken Paella - 5/5 - Patatas Bravas - 4/5 - Tortilla Española - 5/5 Other bonus points for me: - I love their homemade aioli and salsa that came with the tapas - Amazing service! We decided to eat there as we didn't want the food to get cold on our drive home. They have a tented area with mist fans to keep diners cool in the heat. Chef Luis himself checked up on us a few times to make sure we had enough plates/utensils and to see how everything is tasting - They put a little flag of Spain in every dish. Super cute! - They are an eco-friendly business I can't wait to come back and try out the rest of their menu. Definitely going to be getting the bombas and flamenquin again though!

Yelp
After reading previous reviews about Austhentico I really wanted to love it, but my group left disappointed. We ordered to-go food from this food truck on a late Thursday night and were met with spectacular service. The man in the truck was very kind and seemed excited to serve us, but unfortunately the food was just fine. We ordered the bombas, flamenquin, patatas bravas, chicken fideua, bocadillo de Spanish chorizo, and bocadillo de Pepito de Ternera. My main dish, the chicken fideua, had flavor but was extremely dry. I left wondering if it had been left to cook for too long. The flamenquin also had good flavor but was dry on the inside. The mashed potato and ground beef bombas were tasty and were complimented nicely by the homemade garlic aioli and salsa. The patatas bravas were my favorite dish by far -- they were perfectly crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. My friends that ordered the sandwiches said they also both had good flavor. The dishes are pretty fairly priced, with a meal for one person costing approximately $14. I do not recommend visiting this truck late at night, because the road to and from can be very dark and difficult to see. Overall, we found the food good but not great. Several dishes stood out, like the patatas bravas and bombas, but were not enough to keep me running back.

Yelp
A little bit of Spain right here in South Austin! Chef is from Spain (Barcelona) and cooking up nothing but authentic tapas! We tried the flamenquin, bombas, tortilla española and flamenquin . It was all delicious!!! So fresh and filling. In true tapa fashion, we ordered 4 dishes for two people to share so we could get a sampling of different dishes. As I mentioned, we had the fried potato balls filled with ground beef "bombas", deep fried rolls with pork loin, ham and cheese "flamenquin", a Spanish style omelette served with sourdough rye with tomato spread "tortilla espanola & pa amb tomaquet", little potatoes "patatas bravas", and the BEST steak, caramelized onions and cheese sandwich ever!!! It's called the Pepito de Ternera!!! Highly recommend!! There are also plenty of noodle dishes, salads and grilled sandwiches for kids! Located next to the hive in the parking lot area of gas station (the zone). The chef also offers specialized catering for private events. Check out his Instagram and Facebook for more info about his journey. This is a great way to sample many traditional dishes! We will definitely be back for more!

Yelp
So far it's the only Spanish restaurant I've been to in the states that ACTUALLY tastes like the food I've had in Spain! I had the seafood paella, the popular croquetas de jamon serrano, and baguette with homemade aioli- each blew me away. I was impressed that the croquetas were not overly battered or fried which made the outside delicate and the inside perfectly melted and savory. The seafood paella was truly special- the rice was cooked perfectly al dente and every single grain was scraped from the dish by the end of the meal. It was the perfect amount for two people and was abundant with peas and seafood. Still astonished by the quality that came out of a food truck knowing how long it usually takes to get this kind of flavor and dish! The owners are both so nice and seemed to have a friendly familiarity with a lot of the customers, which told me that people are definitely coming back a lot :)

Yelp
This is a great spanish food truck right outside of Mort Subite (best belgian beer pub in the USA). The vegan paella, beef bombas and spanish ham croquettes were all delicious. You can order right from inside the bar and Chef Luis will deliver your food warm and ready to enjoy. I will definitely order from Austhentico every time I visit Austin.

Yelp
Que rico! Amazing Spanish food truck attached to a Belgium beer bar! What a great combo

Yelp
Food was delicious, it was recommended by the owner and it was great. The service received from beginning to end was great as well. Owner was super nice and accommodating.

Yelp
Fresh made Seafood Paella. The location is a nice bar setting. Food actually ordered from food truck from outside back door and they bring dishes in when ready.

Great Spanish food near great Belgian bar. Highly recommend it. Paella and ham sandwich!

Yelp
First but not last visit. I tried the New York strip sandwich. I'm a sandwich guy and this one hit all my sweet spots. The baguette was perfectly crusty with nice grill marks for smoky notes. Beef was flavorful and tender. Caramelized onions were melty-sweet perfection. Gooey sharp Manchego pulled it all together. Next we tried the bombas. The beef encased potato fritters were spot on. I'd marry a bowl of these potatoes in mashed form. But the Chef decided to stuff it with well seasoned beef and deep fry it. Thanks Chef. For dessert I had the pork tenderloin, Jamon Serrano and Gruyère roulade. Cuz'... why not?! The aioli and tomato sauce accompaniments were amazing. Just enough back heat from garlic and what I assume is paprika. Lots of care and tradition is coming out of this modest mobile kitchen.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, consistent, and super friendly! I've tried a number of items from the menu and I wouldn't change a thing. Luis makes your food fresh to order and always seems to have a great attitude. You should definitely be eating here and supporting him

Yelp
I had a great sandwich for lunch. Toasted. I assume the owner runs the food truck. Thanks, wishing you the best

Yelp
Patatas bravas and Spanish tortilla are a must get, along with anything that comes with the garlic aioli. Go try austhentico and you will want to go back.

Yelp
This is a TERRIFIC Spanish Food truck! Amazing sandwiches and traditional appetizers and plates! Absolutely fantastic! As real as you can get straight out of Spain!

Yelp
Check this place out!!! Seafood paella and chicken fideua are incredible. All of the tapas are on point, best Spanish tortilla in the city! Keep it up, Chef Luis!

Christina S.

Yelp
So sad we found this place right before they are moving downtown and away from us! We enjoyed our food and hopefully will stop by one more time before they move

Johanna M.

Yelp
Austhentico's new location offers a cozy atmosphere to enjoy delicious Spanish dishes that pair so well with the beer selection at Mort Subite Belgian Beer Bar. I tried their delicious new moules-frites dish with a refreshing Estrella Galicia beer from the bar and I highly recommend it! Not only is their food amazing but they are the sweetest business owners you'll meet!

Katherine B.

Yelp
This was incredible! So much care put into this food, everything was excellent. Especially loved the jamon sandwich, chicken croquettes, and the two house-made sauces. It is SO rare to experience food with such attention to detail at such a fair price point. Highly recommend!

Mark H.

Yelp
First time visit. My wife saw a favorable article. It's near the Watering Bowl dog park, so we placed an order and headed over. The aroma as you approach the trailer was amazing. The owner/chef was extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was ready precisely on time. It's fresh and delicious. On the day we visited, they were out of a few of the appetizers, so we look forward to revisiting and trying some others.

Yelp
No pics because the food got scarffed!! Steak sandwich was killer, bombas were perfectly fried, and the patatas bravas were on point too. Nice work chef, I'll be back. Rumor has it that paella is coming to the menu soon as well. Going to be a regular here, I can just feel it!

Yelp
Just grabbed some takeout from here. We had Chicken paella and Tortilla Española. Both were fantastic! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Awesome authentic Spanish food. Very friendly chef! Definitely worth trying. Went there with my husband and a friend.

Yelp
Fantastic! So happy to have discovered a great new spot in south Austin. We loved the pepito de ternera and patatas bravas!
