Late Friday night plans of exploring this place was not disappointing to say the least. Ordered a kashmiri chai. I am a kashmiri and was excite to try it out. I have never had this tea in my life. It’s nice but I guess an acquired taste maybe. Doodh patti brought back memories of India. The typical desi chai. Loved it. Masala fries we a nice try. Attaching a pic of my husband smelling the tea and another pic of samosas in case you wish to see how they look like 😝 Ordered samosas too. So they use mezabaan frozen samosas. You get two in one order with a very unique chutney with lots of flavours in it but ginger overpowering them all. It’s just one person who takes care of everything. He is very hardworking and polite. He doesn’t seem to understand English and Hindi too well. But with some effort you might get what you want. There is a sweet seating area. Cannot accommodate too many guests but it’s ok to have something around to sit and enjoy. I loved it! One star less coz they use frozen samosas.

Google
Authentic chai wala !! Tried doodh patti it was really good but tell the guy to make it less sweet. Masala fries were too good and tried bun kabab which was okay it lacked green chutney. Overall a good place for a quick chai and some snacks.

Google
Best Indian chai in town, priced equivalent to Starbucks coffee but the flavors and quantity is amazing, the guy made tea right in front of me after placing order, loved the taste. Best CHAI in town, haven’t got opportunity to try other breakfast items and I guess they would amazing too!!

Google
Best Chai I ever had in Austin, the Doodh Patti chai was very well made to my liking, you can request the guy to add sugar etc as per your choice. Please note that this guy working on the truck doesn't speak English or Hindi, so please be patient with him, he is also quite a shy person so avoid too much talking. And lastly he is a handicap person working really hard to earn his bread, so people if you can then please give him some good cash tips 🙏

Google
The only place in Austin that has the tea-stall feeling of Bangladesh. Heard that the ownership was changed a few times, but the vibe is still the same. The tea: I found it AWESOME. French fry: Didn't even touch it. The tea seemed enough. Took one bite. Wasn’t bad. Our friends ate em up like bears.

Google
Nice addition to Austin food trailer. owner Is super nice and tea is also amazing. I had Kashmiri cold tea , quite refreshing. Also had samosas, piping hot. Gave us free cookies with our tea.

Kapil Pandey

Google
Tried the hot kashmiri chai. It's different with some pink rose flavour and some crushed nuts. He does have some samosa and fries as well. He made it fresh and hot for me. I wish I could have gotten my masala ginger tea. :)

Google
Came right around closing, and the employee was very courteous and helpful. We got the kashmiri Chai, which came out very hot which was perfect for the cold night. I really enjoyed the pistachio pieces in the Chai. It was very delicious.

Yelp
Have had this food truck bookmarked to try. On our trip to Austin, we made sure to stop in. Ambiance for food trucks is a bit tricky because you are sometimes in communities that aren't the most flashy.... Which means there may be outside smells competing with your food. Sadly, that was the case here. The spot they were at smelled really bad that our family didn't want to stand there longer than we had to. Wish they had a better spot for themselves. In addition to that, after visiting 6+ food trucks today alone, we were taken aback by how disorganized and dirty this truck looked on the inside. If you (chai wala) read this post, please clean the inside so ppl that are looking in can rest assured that the food is fresh, clean, sanitary, etc. I promise this will be huge for business! It's honestly the only reason why I'm giving 3 stars. We got the dhood patti and Kashmiri chai. Both tasted great. We also got a sheermal and a beef kabob paratha. The sheermal was good. Kabob paratha was good as well but it may not suit everyone's tastes. My wife expected it to have a cilantro or mint chutney but it had more or less a sour tamarind sauce. Having a different sauce on the side would've been nice. All in all, the food and teas are good and the service is quick. It didn't quite live up to my expectations but I'm hopeful they can change things around.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed since this place was highly rated. I went here a week earlier only to find it was closed when it said it was open. I thought it was just a strange mistake. I decided to give it another shot the week after and try. I showed up and ordered a Kashmiri Chai and a Kabob Paratha beef. I showed the Yelp check-in coupon for $0.5 off and he said it didn't count for the chai I got. I mean maybe it's exclusively for the masala chai but I was a bit disappointed it wasn't clearly stated for that type of chai. It was only $0.5 so it wasn't a huge deal but also it's $0.5, why do I have to jump through hoops to use a coupon for that amount. Also they don't take apple pay even though Yelp says they do. I'm pretty confused when the other review (even one yelp elite) said "this is a great place to hang out". This is located at the side of a gas station and dumpsters are right there. The tables/benches and chairs are pretty rundown. I wouldn't recommend to sit here to just chill. Also the service was pretty non existent. Other reviews said he was explaining the menu but when I ordered he just repeated what I got. The food is just okay. I feel the pickled veggies are a bit too strong in the kabob wrap and I think he pulled the beef kabob meat and the actual wrap out of the freezer. (It is a store brand frozen paratha wrap) The chai felt more like pink water. I felt there wasn't much chai flavour. Just a whole lot of pistachios. The price wasn't outrageous at $4.50 for kashmiri chai and $7 for the beef wrap but I'm not sure that is much of a consolation when it is a store bought frozen wrap and pink water. When I was leaving the person who served me just stared at me menacingly. I'm not really sure why. There is a difference between briefly glancing as I leave and taking time to stop in your tracks and look me in the eyes for a few seconds. I paid for my food normally like everyone else. I'm even more confused how it is a 4+ star place on Yelp and Google. I seriously question the legitimacy of some of the 5 star reviews of this place. This might be one of the worst places I've ever eaten at in Austin. edit: You read some of the more critical reviews of this place (1-2 stars) and you'll see overlap of the staring thing, frozen food, and overall poor service. I feel the people who can speak the language get better service.

Yelp
This is a great hang out or chillin spot! I had their Kashmiri chai which was terrific! The guy working there was super kind and helpful.

Yelp
We catered dhood patti, Kashmiri chai and desi coffee for a sip and see party at our home. Everyone loved the chai and coffee...including some very discerning aunties and uncles! The estimates Ahmed gave for how much of each drink to order were spot on. There was some confusion on the day of the event about the type of service I wanted (chai bar versus self service). Also, the drinks were delivered after the start of the event, which was concerning because we couldn't get hold of anyone to figure out what was going on. Also, the condiment caddy was sad looking. Despite the few issues, I would definitely cater from ChaiWala again!

Yelp
This place has an amazing assortment of Chais and Desi snacks. Their bun kabob and Masala fries are the perfect combo to complement both the Kashmiri and Masala Chai. If you are looking for the dhaba style chai the dhoot patti is worth every sip. Personally I am a huge fan of their Desi Coffee and Nutella Paratha as it's a fun little treat when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth. You can't ever go wrong with Austin Chai Wala when you are looking for a good place to enjoy the evening. Also Waj, the owner, is literally the most welcoming guy ever! With the ACW you feel right at home! PS they are shipping their world famous Kashmiri chai mix!

Yelp
Came here in the evening, loved the ambiance and the Chai was incredible! We drink Chai daily so this place was a must and we definitely came away astounded at how good his Chai was! Very friendly and great service, well worth the time, especially since we came from Los Angeles. Definitely coming back when we're in Austin again!

Yelp
Honestly not much to say then some phenomenal service, excellent chai, and great snacks. It's located in a fairly defunked gas station and so be prepared to fight for parking. I tried the marsala fries and of course the marsala chai. The fries were well seasoned and honestly much more flavor packed than I was anticipating. The portion size is also proportionate to the price, which was great. Overall a great place to stop by for a quick bite and chai.

Yelp
First time I came here, it was great. But i just stopped by yesterday and was so disappointed. I got the Masala Chai which was good, but the samosas I got were completely broken apart. They weren't puffed and round like they were supposed to be. Also whoever was working had no idea if anything was vegetarian or not, and I just needed more clarification on some items. The samosas were vegetarian tho! To stay on the safe side i got the Nutella Paratha and it was tasty- just heavy and oily but a fun dessert. There are some tables to sit at nothing too nice though(it is behind a gas station). Overall, good chai but probably won't come back.

Yelp
Authentic chai, as advertised! Perfect spot for the fall and winter! Highly recommend!

Fariha P.

Yelp
Came in town from Houston for the weekend. Husband and I got sore throats and wanted some hot chai in the cold weather. We decided to try this out. We drove 20mins, around 9pm up here and I was disappointed. I walked over to the truck and the man stared at me and the way he did made me feel like I was back on the streets of Karachi...such a filthy stare! I ordered two Kashmiri chais and he said they were out so I ordered two doodh pattis. In all honesty, it seemed the man was super high or drunk, not sure. Pls hire better people to represent your brand. The chai was great. But never coming back because it was not a pleasant experience.

Phaneendra P.

Yelp
Perfect winter late night eatery. The chai in the cold winter breeze is an amazing experience. Just wished they kept the area well maintained. There are two more food trucks incase anybody wants to try anything else with chai. Tried Kashmiri Chai, Nutella Paratha and Sheermal. Tasted really good.

Yelp
Not a safe/comfortable environment for women. Absolutely terrible experience. There was this creepy Desi employee dude (not sure if he's the owner) who kept literally staring at my girlfriend in front of me when we were ordering and giving her some weird smiles like wtf dude and really weirded her out. And he kept trying to talk to her instead of getting my order and even told her when she was paying for us that "she shouldn't pay and get money from me". Then I later realized that this place was filled with just a buncha guys lingering and getting chai. If you're getting your girl, def would not recommend this place. Didn't know his name but the employee was short, chubby and had glasses if that helps.

Yelp
I only have a finite number of meals left in my life, and I can't believe I wasted one on this place. We ordered the kabob paratha and the veggie omelette, plus the Kashmiri chai and the strawberry mint lemonade. Everything was awful. The kabob in the picture looked fresh with an array of sauces and some fries. The actual product was just the kabob, which consisted of some greasy over-sauced meat with a few sad vegetable in a frozen paratha. What it lacked in looks it failed to make up in flavor -- it was bland and lifeless. Meanwhile the chai and lemonade were both so watered down it was hard to discern any of the supposed flavors. The chai also had an unpleasant texture, and I am not at all sure the lemonade wasn't just some generic store-bought pink lemonade. I never tried the omelette, but now my wife has a stomach ache, so that is all I need to know. Stay away. Stay far, far away.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Was hoping for a great cup of chai. Found this business via map/gps phone app. Connected to their website. Went to the business and they were closed-- apparently they have not updated their newly changed (according to Yelp) hours on their website. Disappointed. Also, while there (and googling where else we could go for chai), we took note that we really wouldn't have wanted to sit and drink chai there anyway- basically on the side of a gas station across from a bunch of trash dumpsters.

Yelp
If you want a true Pakistani experience then come to Austin chaiwalla. Awful service, questionable hygiene, a hodgepodge array of seating, unreliable hours of operation, and scenic views of the dumpster. I initially gave this place five stars when it first opened but after frequenting it the past few times, I am downgrading my rating. The service has been absolutely awful. Recently we tried to order lassi from the menu and the employee said what's lassi? And we said it's on the menu and he stated oh lassi is only for breakfast. In a later instance we tried to order kulfi and he told us they don't have any and to come back next month. It's hard not to assume this guy either didn't want to make certain items or was unwilling to update the menu properly. The employee has also asked my husband, when he was trying to order, if he would donate to some random FB fund. This is very unprofessional behavior and makes one uncomfortable. Finally, the timings on google, Yelp, and IG don't coincide. Not sure when the place is open and when it closes since the times don't match up. We'd go according to google or IG times and when we got there it was closed. I want to support a fellow Pakistani American business but it's hard when the service is so abysmal. I hope you all can fix these issues as the dood paathi chai is still great!

Yelp
O.MG. The best authentic Indian chai I've had in all of the United States! Incredible samosas! And perfect replication of "Indian coffee"!! Super friendly people and an awesome experience overall.

Yelp
What a great idea for a chai truck! Sadly I was disappointed with my chai, it was a little too milky for my liking. I would like to try it again and maybe ask for less milk or try to tweak it to the perfect masala chai. It was a fun food truck to explore though. My friend really enjoyed the samosas!

M H.

Yelp
Service: Had the strangest service here out of any food truck I've ever visited. I ordered two drinks (kashmiri chai and mango lassi) and three food items (samosa, masala fries, and omelette paratha). I gave my order when I walked up and the gentleman at the counter just nodded a few times but mostly had a blank look on his face. Then he pulled out a little notebook and repeated the order to me and I had to correct him on several items. Then he started writing down the order in the notebook and I had to correct him on several items again. He wasn't able to answer any of my questions when I asked in English or in Urdu and communicated mostly in grunts. I originally asked him for scrambled egg and he nodded the first two times I gave the order; then when he started writing it in the notebook he said "No scramble, only omelette". Why did it take three tries to get that information? Food: The kashmiri chai and the mango lassi were excellent. The masala fries and samosas were COVERED in so much Chaat masala that they were almost impossible to eat. I'm talking like half the Shan masala packet on only two food items. They both looked to have been either overfried or fried in very old and dirty oil as they were very dark in color and didn't seem fresh at all. The omelette was under seasoned and I think the onions had gone bad because it had a pretty bad smell coming from it. All the food items are coming straight from the freezer - there's no actual food prep or talent going into the cooking except for the eggs I guess, but that's why the menu prices are only $2-6 per item. Bottom Line: I HIGHLY recommend the drinks. Avoid the food - you're better off eating from one of the three other truck in the lot. Service is subpar, and don't expect to get any of your questions answered.

Yelp
This place is not authentic at all!!! Now I can't account for the chai which seemed to be a popular item but the food and Kashmiri Chai was negative! Not worth the hype or the drive to this food truck! Here's a few things you wanna know before heading there: 1). Place is filthy...no concept of hand hygiene let alone anything else. The cashier/order taker is using the same unclean hands that took your money to prepare food and pack it. The gentleman in the back making the chai rubbed his face and body several times and continue to cook with those same hands. 2). The Kashmiri Chai was pink, which everyone looks for but was literally pink water. Saw another customer return the kashmiri chai and it should've been an alarm for me not to order it. 3). The omelette paratha...the paratha was not homemade it's a frozen paratha you can buy from any ethnic store. The omelette literally only had salt and pepper, no trace of being Pakistani or Indian. 4). Nutella paratha..,ok so who can go wrong with chocolate inside a paratha..I give this a 3/5 just because it could've been warmer. The name is catchy...you don't find many chai carts but wish the owner or even the workers put in more effort to make it authentic.

Yelp
Our favorite hot drink for 2021 so far. They make their drink from scratch so it may take a little bit longer.
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
I'm only knocking off a star because the hours are incredible inconsistent and never match what's posted on their website, Uber Eats, Yelp, etc. Twice I've spent over an hour waiting for an Uber Eats order that never came because they were just randomly closed with no notice even on their Uber Eats account! The chai is great and the food is tasty but even calling doesn't help because the phone is forwarded to a sister food truck in Houston and if you don't make sure they know you're talking about AUSTIN Chai Wala they'll say they're open. I'm not likely to ever go back or order from there again because I can't rely on them being open for their own posted hours. If you happen to be there and by some miracle they are open, then enjoy. Otherwise don't go out of your way.
google avatar

R G.

Yelp
Awful customer service. Drove 30mins to pickup my phone order. Only to be told they were out of what I had ordered, 30 mins ago. To add to insult to the injury he didn't offer me a different option for the takeout, all while being curt.
google avatar

Mariam M.

Yelp
The best kashmiri chai I've ever had!!! The owner was so nice- we went on a cold breezy night and he offered to bring the chai out to our car. My friend ordered the samosas which were fresh and flavorful.
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
I tried the iced vanilla chai and it's really good. Some of the best I've ever had. I also had masala fries and the masala flavor was amazing. Best fry seasoning I've ever had. The only reason I knock a star is because the inside is noticeably dirty. It's not bad enough that I won't come back, but the fridge doors and counters were clearly stained and they had cleaning chemicals sitting on the counter with food as well as whisks and spoons hanging on the walls that were noticeably stained and dirty. I don't hold any of this against them, but I know these might turn other people away. The man who attended me was very kind and nice. It's also very affordable and it's so much better to support these family owned local places over corporations like Starbucks. I'll definitely be back

Yelp
I was super excited when I heard about this place. Austin definitely was missing a good Chai/Tea place. We landed up here after a tiring day out around Austin. Took masala Chai, Kashmiri chai and coffee. I din not find the Kashmiri chai too awesome. It was just Ok. Felt there was a lot of water than milk. Regular masala chai was ok. We even took samosa, and they were awesome. Freshly fried with the authentic spices and filling . They were huge compared to samosa's that you get anywhere else in Austin. Just loved it. They were quiet filling and would definitely suggest a chai - samosa combo ! The owner was awesome. Since we were late and many a times food trucks are closed on Sunday night I gave him a call to check. Initially he did not receive my call, guess he might have been busy. But he was courteous enough to return the call back !!
google avatar

Jibran K.

Yelp
Wow. Very surprised Austin had a proper chai place. This is a must stop for us to get our chai fix everytime we are in Austin.
google avatar

Errol M.

Yelp
It comes down to this: 1. Why should you get a hot Kashmiri Chai when it's 101-degrees outside? 2. Because it's great. Austin Chai Wala is a brand new trailer, I don't know jack about Pakistani/Indian beverages, and the plan was to compare an iced Masala Chai with a Boba milk tea. But Chef Zaidi suggested I try his signature Kashmiri Chai, and definitely do it hot. Yeah sure, I'm game. Whoa, tiny chopped pistachios? Cool. He had just sold his last order of samosas to a young lady ahead of me, and I was tempted to make her a profitable offer. But that may have been a little too creepy. The "cake rusks" were interesting though - subcontinent Biscotti? They do have coffee here, but you're across the street from Stinson's & Upper Crust, and Austin has like 700 other coffee places around - who else is doing authentic street Chai? They're tweaking their hours (currently 5-10pm weekdays, earlier on weekends), and it's not that hard to park around this Rosedale Market convenience store on 45th & Burnet. It appears Chef Zaidi started Chai Wala from a GoFundMe effort, and he is a fun guy to chat with. I'm curious what he could do in a kitchen. Could a chilled Kashmiri quenelle be the next ramen? That'd be fun to see.
google avatar

Krista Y.

Yelp
My friend got the strawberry mint lemonade and I got the mango lassi. Both were excellent! I don't live in Austin, but I wish I did so I could go here all the time. It took quite a while for the drinks to come out, but we didn't mind. The strawberry mint lemonade was so refreshing, not too sweet, and you can see the minced up mint floating in it. The mango lassi had a good balance of dairy, mango, and sugar. I loved it, but I might be mango biased. I saw they had a short list of some scrambled eggs too, so I guess you could get a quick breakfast here. There was also a banh mi truck right next to them, and I kept thinking I'd really like to grab a drink and a sandwich for lunch.
google avatar

Jan T.

Yelp
I don't understand how this stand gets 4.5 stars. The Kashmiri Chai was watered down and had no taste. The veggie omelette was made from a frozen paratha base with overly cooked egg. Dinner was completely inedible.

ehab a.

Yelp
The fries were great but the omelet was bland bland no flavor. Will give it another try.
google avatar

S A.

Yelp
Who says no to chai! Chai is awesome, food/snacks all taste great, and service is phenomenal. They also have chai options with non-dairy, just ask. Their iced Desi coffee is not on the menu but if you ask, they will make it. It's perfect for a hot day. I also catered chai at one of my events and was impressed with their service to deliver and chai was great.
google avatar

Abdurahman L.

Yelp
This place is a must-go every time I visit Austin! The Kashmiri Chai is really really tasty, the pistachios are perfect, and the service is great! I definitely highly recommend it
google avatar

Aditi S.

Yelp
Chai!! Why not! What a fantastic menu designed to satisfy just the chai nashta kinda craving. Greeted with pleasing smiles always. The masala chai meets the perfect balance. They have introduced the veggie and chicken bun kababs this summer. The veggie one we tried was delicious with crisp fries and a fantastic mouthwatering chutney!! Don't miss!!
google avatar

Sushil V.

Yelp
Got two masala chais and an order of samosas. The guy serving us touched the floor, scratched himself and touched our samosas with his bare hands. We didn't eat the samosas but the masala chai was very good. If you're concerned about hygiene, this isn't the place for you. Amazing masala chai!

Deborah M.

Yelp
Really great Masala chai and snacks. Loved the paratha kebab. Last night the cook was an amazing man from Afghanistan. He claimed not to speak much English or Urdu, but we managed to communicate just fine, and I left a big tip because I was so pleased with his kindness and of course the excellent chai!! In my dream world, they'd be open for breakfast and I could have Masala omelette, paratha and chai every morning. And if they added dal to the menu my life might be complete. But it's a little taste of something great at the moment.
google avatar

Sara J.

Yelp
Loved the food and chai here! I ordered a chai, samosas, gyro wrap and Nutella paratha and everything was super delicious !! Will definitely be back and I love supporting a local small business
google avatar

Syed A.

Yelp
Great concept but terrible food and customer service. Have one dude working who's also the cashier and honestly doesn't know how to make this food. Kashmiri Chai is a joke. Do yourself a favor and don't order that. It tastes NOTHING like Kashmiri chai. Gyro wrap had two skinny pieces of meet. Nutella paratha has almost no Nutella in it. Ordered samosas and they ran out of chatni so gave us ketchup ‍ The wait is terribly long. Wow what a let down. Sigh
google avatar

Nimra N.

Yelp
Austin chai wala is a bringing authentic desi tea time to America. They have Kashmiri chai which is difficult to find but definitely a gem in the chai world. Also tired there chicken gyro which is a paratha roll and that is also really good. A perfect pit stop after work or at lunch.
google avatar

Anuja S.

Yelp
Have been twice here before and what I noticed is that they have an extended menu now with Omelette and paratha / scrambled egg with paratha too. In this trip, I decided to give their kashmiri chai a try again and it was a miss ! It did not work for me for 2 reasons - it wasn't anywhere close to Indian chai 2.Tasted way more milky to more but(almost like desi Masala milk). I would definitely stick to their doodh patti chai/ masala chai if I am craving for Indian chai. They have great samosas; hot, perfectly spicy accompanied with green cilantro chutney. Great to have a chai-samosa spot in Austin. Returning customer on rainy days.

Debolina D.

Yelp
Just discovered this place yesterday and we were went back there today as well. We tried the beef kabob parantha, kashmiri Chai, Masala Chai, Samosas and Mango Lassi in the two days. What can I say! This place is a hidden gem. The food is out of the world. Full of flavour and authentic In the best possible way. The masala chai trumps the Kashmiri chai in my opinion. I guess we will be going there very often.
google avatar

Niyati S.

Yelp
Yummy chai and great service. Tried three different chai and omelette with paratha.. perfect breakfast food
google avatar

Lybah N.

Yelp
I don't know what they did, but their Kashmiri Chai is so watery and terrible now. I can't bear with it. The Dhood Patti chai is still good. But kinda of disappointing about the Kashmiri Chai
google avatar

Amber K.

Yelp
Stopped here because...well...every Desi person from Dallas does. So of course we had to try it too while we were in town. And boy, if did not disappoint. The kabob rolls were SO yummy, tasted like homemade kabobs on yummy parathas. The Desi Coffee was delicious. Highly recommend stopping by here to grab a chai & snack while you're our exploring Austin. The owner is so personable and sweet, he chatted with us for a while and made the experience special. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Gina K.

Yelp
Fantastic, authentic masala chai and Desi coffee! If you want to try authentic Indian chai, come here! But be forewarned that the chai you get here it will not taste like the chai you get from Starbucks, which in my opinion is a good thing. Can't wait to come back and try the veggie omelet with paratha or masala fries!

Abid K.

Yelp
Food truck in Hyde Park...there aren't a lot of places in the area to get Kashmiri Chai and Ahmed and co. make a great one. Their other tea drinks are good too but the Kashmiri is the standout. He provides a nice assortment of snacks as well - I think the Nutella paratha is a particularly good accompaniment to the chai. Fair warning: his spot is pretty popular in the afternoons so there can sometimes a be a little bit of a wait. But in the Old Country chai drinking is meant to be a relaxed, social activity.
google avatar

Duaa E.

Yelp
Awesome Kashmiri chai and extremely kind service from the owner! Definitely would recommend stopping by here when in Austin!

Yelp
Went here a few days ago. We ordered the Kashmiri chai, masala chai, samosas, chicken bun, and sheermal. Great all around

Yelp
Pros: Finally, the first chai cart in Texas! If this is your first time to try authentic chai, then I recommend this chai cart. Cons: The Dhood patti (milk tea) and Kashmiri chai is nice, but with a few small recipe changes it could be better. Disclaimer: I am somewhat of a chai expert and a Desi (meaning anyone that is born in the U.S., but has parents from either Pakistan, India, or Bangladesh). Moreover, I have been making chai since childhood, so I am very particular about chai and tea in general. Chai makes me happy. If you haven't tried authentic chai, I believe you are missing out, friend. I am not talking about the Starbucks crap. I am talking about the honest to goodness, boiled tea. There are many ways to make it, but once you have had the real thing, there is no turning back. You will crave it, dream of it, and extol its milder than coffee virtues. A chai cart like this is very traditional in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, but a rather new phenomenon here in the States. Like Starbucks here, chai can be found on almost every street corner in South Asia. Hot chai is popular year around, even in the heat of summer, because of its higher caffeine content than traditional tea and its more even release of caffeine than coffee. It is a rich and stimulating morning wake-up, afternoon pick-me-up, or after-supper digestif. Austin Chai Wala offers different types of tea, from traditional dhood patti (milk tea) to Kashmiri tea (a mild tea that tastes like a blend of green and black tea and hails from Kashmir, is usually pink in color, garnished with chopped pistachios, and salty in taste) to black Persian tea to masala chai (a spiced black tea). I like that they offer snacks, including vegetarian samosas, parathas (a fried flat bread), and sheermal (a fluffy flat bread made with yeast and milk with a mildly sweet taste). I cannot comment on the snacks, as my wife and I had already eaten dinner and did not have room to try any of them. In short, I am happy to finally see a chai cart in Texas. The chai is nice, but with some improvements, I believe it could be made even better. The owner said that he has plans to franchise across Texas, starting sequentially in Austin, then Houston, then Dallas, and finally San Antonio.
