Yelp
After just happening to stumble into a gem like Sour Duck across the street, it'd be fair to say I was both curious and hopeful that Austin Daily Press might deliver the same, awesome experience. While their photos on Yelp didn't look quite as impressive, most of their reviews (and ratings) were just as positive and glowing. Which, unfortunately, might also be why the experience left me feeling so mixed. Some good things to be sure, but some not so good things, as well. All in all? It certainly makes this review a bit painful to write!
Now, compared to their neighbor across the way, Austin Daily Press is far more casual. In a sense, it's almost like a food truck (food shack?), with a half dozen or so picnic tables in a make shift "garden" under a canopy to shield you from the sun. However, despite the relatively modest set-up, the menu is pretty legit. Although it's not super extensive, their array of offerings is pretty enticing, featuring tortas, paninis, classic and brioche sandwiches, tacos, salads, and starters/snacks. No joke - I had so many problems trying to figure out what to get, I moved myself to the back of our group just to buy myself more time to decide!
-- NACHO NACHOS - Pork Belly Carnitas, Black Beans, Goat Cheese Yogurt, Queso, and Red Cabbage Salad...$11

This alone might have been worth five stars. The carnitas were juicy and flavorful and the yogurt added a bit of brightness. However, I loved the queso and chips; the former was delicious and had a nice kick while the latter was crispy and just slightly thick. AWESOME.

Since it seemed like they're known for their tortas, this seemed like the best way to try as many as possible. Sadly, though, these didn't really do it for me. Of the three, I liked The O.G. the most, as the ham, onions, ranch and cheeses mixed well together. The Cubano was decently tasty as well, but the Lucille was a miss for me (a little busy and didn't care for the red cabbage. However, the bread killed it for me - super airy and dry, which just sucked all the flavors away.
Even though I wasn't overly impressed with what I had, I think it'd also be fair to say that my experience was a little more atypical. Between how good so many of their dishes looked (both on the menu and in photos on Yelp), as well as their glowing reviews and how much my friends seemed to enjoy their orders (which were different than what I had), perhaps I just didn't get the right things. Sliders aside, there's denying that the nachos were just THAT GOOD.
THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.
