The 38 Essential Restaurants in Paris

"The tongue-in-cheek decor nods to les routiers, the roadside restaurants once frequented by truck drivers — think red-and-white checkered tablecloths, plastic bread baskets, and moleskin banquettes. Deals like a solid two-course meal for 16 euros, including wine, have kept this jaunty bistro packed since it opened. The menu changes constantly but you can expect dishes like celery remoulade with crabmeat, steak au poivre, stuffed cabbage, beef braised with carrots, and chocolate mousse. Located in the 11th Arrondissement." - Alexander Lobrano

Google
Great food, great wine and excellent service. The vibe in the restaurant was lively and relaxed. Highly recommend the traditional cabbage dish, the creamy sauce, with the slow cooked meat and cabbage is absolutely delicious

The service was amazing, the staff was highly knowledgeable and more than willing to provide excellent wine recommendations. This is a traditional French style diner. The escargot are must have dish! All of the plates were rich and delicious.

I feel like the people sitting next to us were served before we were, despite being seated after. It's a small place with a nice vibe and decent food, but I'm not sure if I'd go back

We had a wonderful family dinner, 4 adults. Excellent wine, exquisite food and very friendly staff. Thank you for making this evening special for us.

I really enjoyed this French Bistrot. Everything was amazing. I really enjoyed the eggs meurette and the stuffed cabbage. However, I would highly recommend considering your appetite when ordering cause the portions are really big.

It was the second time we visited AUX BONS CRUS and it was even better. The service is prompt, attentive and especially helpful. The food is consistently great. We had the pate, steak, seabass and profiterole.

We stayed 3 weeks in Paris, just about a 5 minute walk from this restaurant…and ate dinner there FIVE times!!! All of the restaurant staff are welcoming and accommodating, but we have to give special recognition to Morgon who is one of our favorite servers in all of France. This is a Les Routers restaurant…dedicated to providing classic French dishes, well prepared, and at a fair price. They do that, perfectly, every day…simple as that. Now, if you know what’s best for you…you’ll order the farsi (stuffed cabbage)…and have a Babà au Rhum for dessert. In addition to their standard menu, they always have some daily specials that never disappoint. This place is a neighborhood gem, and you are going to be very happy that you discovered it…and you will come back…or, unfortunately, wish that you had. As for us, we’re happy because we got to eat there FIVE times. Sure wish we were still just around the corner… We miss that classic French cuisine…and the lovely Morgon. As for you…GO! ENJOY!

Yelp
My husband and I came here for dinner during our recent 10-day stay in Paris. Despite the rain and our apartment hotel being in 1er, it was well worth the walk to the restaurant. Most of the patrons were local residents at the time we were there and it felt like the neighbourhood restaurant we were looking for. Although our French was limited, the waitstaff was extremely helpful and friendly. Our waiter gave us the English menu which is the same as the local menu. We love the homey and traditional bistrot menu. I order the eggs mayonnaise and pot-au-feu. For my main dish, I had looked up the menu ahead of time was going to order coq au vin, ribeye steak or steak tartare. However, I made a last minute decision to go with the pot-au-feu which I thought would be more fitting for a rainy night. I'm glad I made the switch. The beef was so tender and full of flavour. The carrot, potato and rutabaga soaked up every essence of the soup. I did not leave a drop of soup by the time I finished. The mayonnaise served with the eggs was simply divine.

Yelp
- Locale Destination - It's on Rue Godefroy Cavaignac and Ave Ledru Rollin, nearby Pl Leon Blum (circle). Classy old brown wood entrance. Ambiance: old school, homey, and casual. Menu: solid, classy (bistro items), not too many items. Price: appetizers were like under 15€, entrees were like 25€. In Paris, mid range bistro. Many wine options, price was reasonable. Service: they do speak English and had an English menu. Make sure to RSVP at night because they are small and popular. If you can't, just be there when they open for dinner (7:30pm) so you can squeeze yourself without a reservation. - Gluttony Expedition - Baguette: decent Porches eggs: porches egg was a bit overcooked, but the sauce was homey yet tasty. Loved it. Steak tartar: only comes with shoe-string fries, no salad. 25€. Big portion, bit acidic, well seasoned but solid dish. Fries were cooked well, but shoe strings and a bit saltier side for me. Steak au poivre: beef was cooked well (), bold & punchy sauce w a bit too much of salt and black pepper. Steak wasn't so big, but good portion and cooked well to be tender. Solid. Wine: incredible Crème brûlée: light, flavorful with lots of vanilla beans, more like a mousse texture than cream, which I did like. Good! - Conqueror's Deduction - 4.5 stars. Overall, this was very solid bistro in Paris! Definitely I felt quality on food and service. Tourist friendly. I like it.

Yelp
This restaurant is one of the best places we ate at during our week in Paris- it's a more laid back restaurant with a simple menu and comfort food as others have mentioned. I had the haricots verts with goat cheese to start, and the chou farci--stuffed cabbage in a tomato cream sauce--for my meal. It was really delicious! My sister had the chicken in a mushroom sauce and she said it was her favorite meal. It was so nice to visit Paris again-- we hope to come back here one day!

Yelp
Simple restaurant with a more laid back vibe. No English menus and most waiters couldn't speak English but that's ok. I tried their fish and lamb shoulder. The lamb shoulder was very tender and delicious. Their fish dish was okay ... would not get again. Would recommend coming here for a laid back easy meal. Everyone was friendly.

Yelp
The ambiance is simple and charming with red and white checkerboard tablecloths and an old school French bistro vibe. The service is courteous and friendly, matching the simplicity of the environment. The menu choices are also old school French. But this is the thing: they knock it out of the park with the value of the meal. Our 9 year old son ate steak frites and the waiter recommended the standard version over their ribeye version of this dish and he was right. The regular steak frites was thick, cooked perfectly medium, and covered in a delicious brown pepper sauce. Fries in France are always a notch above those back home for reasons I don't understand, but I suspect duck fat may be involved. Our 12 year old had truffle Mac and cheese and he wants to go back just to have this dish again. My wife had the stuffed cabbage. She said the sauce smothering it was too creamy and rich for her taste and I have to agree. I had the quenelles Nantua (pike fish dumplings) which was smothered in a similarly rich creamy sauce that I enjoyed but couldn't finish. My wife and I have sensitive stomachs that can't tolerate huge volumes of butter or cream that give us pain, so we ate half of our meals and stopped, which was more than fine and we took home leftovers. This is not a gourmet establishment. This is French comfort food and easily beats the regular bistros (which are usually just fine). It's worth going a bit out of your way to dine here in my opinion. We did and we are happy with the decision.

Yelp
A classic French bistro, reasonably priced, and highly recommended. They offered me an English menu when I arrived but I thought I'd give it a shot with the original French. My opened was a lentil "salad" that distinctly had a delicious strong mustard seasoning. The main was chicken and mushrooms with a yellow wine sauce, even better -- and a mountain of very lightly salted fries. The staff could not have been more welcoming and friendly, and it was obvious the patrons were really enjoying themselves, making this a big recommend from me.

Yelp
Very classic French restaurant/bistro. Steak frites and sauces are the specialty, and you won't be disappointed. You can start with a pate, escargot, salads or soups, and then jump right into your main dish. Steak cuts from entrecote to ribeye are available, and both the au poivre and the bearnaise sauce were outstanding. The staff are super friendly, and happy to help with native English speakers; plus, they love to help find a great wine to pair with your food. Dessert adds to the experience, with the profiteroles and the brioche being standouts.

Yelp
Had a wonderful meal at reasonable prices with a carafe of good house wine. Tender veal chop in a tasty sauce w morels. Also Hake, perfectly done with a sweet pepper cream sauce. Good service too.

Yelp
I live in Paris part-time. Apart from the hyper-priced gastro-shrines, you can do no better than this. Their stuffed cabbage (choux farci), in a to-die-for tomato/cream sauce, is sublime, legendary, exceptional. My "grand mere" (if I had such a thing) would weep. Today I had the artichoke heart as an appetizer. It was very good, but did not reach the pinnacle as the stuffed cabbage. The baguette was exceptional as well. Many baguettes in Paris are desultory attempts at a vanishing art. I assume Aux Bons Crus buys theirs from a baker, and I'd like to hunt that guy down. The pitcher of Côtes de Rhone was just right -- I didn't need to spend a centime more. Yes, this place is old school (for the same thing, try Le Quincy on Ledru-Rollin). The patrons are all Parisian, many of whom are quickly shown to their regular table. Ah, to be so lucky!

Yelp
Lively and enjoyable restaurant with well-made simple comfort food. The chou farci was excellent. Thiago delivered warm and friendly service. This was a great experience.

Yelp
Aux Bon Crus deserves its excellent reputation for simple French bistro fare. The Salade Lyonnaise was as good as any I've ever had, with an exquisitely poached egg, meaty lardons, and a flawless proportion of superb vinaigrette. The veal chop came in a cream sauce with morels, which was rich and savory, reminding me of blanquette de veau. The accompanying mashed potatoes were simple but divine, or vice versa. The ribeye steak came with a béarnaise sauce and chopped black truffles (additional cost). The truffle addition was unnecessary because the ribeye burst with flavor at every bite and chew (even without any béarnaise). The abundant side of fries came hot, well-salted, and almost distractingly pleasurable - trite things to say, but so it was. We were not asked about our temperature preferences for either protein, but they were both a perfect medium-rare. Service was fast and excellent, and you could not ask for a more fitting ambiance to soak in all of the pleasure. To be sure everything was simple, but why should I hold that against it? We walked home with butter-joy coursing in our blood.

Yelp
Recommended by eater as one of the red and white table cloth casual diner, Aux Bons Crus disappoints. The veal special was well cooked with a great hearty sauce. Steak frites was trouble, dry and over cooked without flavor. Wine list was reasonable we got a Michel Magnien Cote de Nuits village wine for $50 and is solid and hard to get in the US. Overall, average experience. Pass.

Yelp
I've been here numerous times and always order the steak with frites. Frites are always wonderful. Each time I come, the steak gets tougher and tougher. Based on today's visit, where I was barely able to eat 1/2 the steak I will return but never order the steak again.

Yelp
What a gem here in Paris. Friends of our from Bordeaux recommended this restaurant. It was fabulous. We sat and enjoyed a lively dinner. I had the cod with their butter sauce. My wife had the steak frites - cooked to perfection. Our waiter was one of the owners. He was so nice and recommended some wonderful bottles of wine. We will definitely return for another delicious meal.

Yelp
The steak was very chewy and the atmosphere wasn't very good. I would choose one of the many other amazing restaurants in Paris instead.

Yelp
Came here because of The NY Times review last Sunday.. will come back because the staff were amazing. The chefs pate appetizer was delicious and the desserts both the chocolate mouse and Napoleon were outstanding. The steaks were good, basic could have used a little seasoning when they were cooked but we enjoyed both the rib eye and filet.
