29 Croissants to Try Around NYC

"The croissants at Aux Merveilleux de Fred are baked periodically during the day, so you may get a warm one. They are compact, to be sure, and shaped like a well-worn armchair, but extremely buttery and done to a perfect shade of reddish brown. They rate third best among the best in the city. $3.90." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

West Village Bakery Aux Merveilleux de Fred Serves a Great Chocolate Sandwich - Eater NY

"The Nutella brioche ($3.20) is found at West Village bakery Aux Merveilleux de Fred... I was content to praise the Nutella brioche with faint damnation, until I stumbled on a similar product alternately available at the same bakery — the ganache brioche ($3.35)." - Robert Sietsema

Just a small place for toke out stuff, really tasty! Just wish the baker would wash her uniform once in a while! Not a great look if you want to bring people in!

Google
A small French bakery located in the west village. I really enjoy the croissants and brioches available. The plain croissant is one of the best I’ve had in the city

Google
Don't sleep on these treats! I fist tried Aux Merveilleux in Paris and fell in love, was so excited to learn they had an outpost in the West Village (just as good!). If the rum-filled waffles are offered, get those, they're the best!!

Google
Got a plain croissant. Was simple and nice. It Is a small place, there’s no seating.

Google
Best croissants and chocolate brioche in NYC and this is coming from a French guy ! The team at 8th Ave is also stunning, always in a good mood , welcoming and pleasant ! Stop there almost every evening and on week end for breakfast !

Yelp
The Pearl Sugar Cramique was light, pillowy with the right amount of sweetness. The buns had a light crunch due to the pear sugar. Was well priced for what it was at under $5 and made for a great snack while walking around. It reminded me of the baked pork bun bread from a dim sum restaurant but slightly sweeter!

Yelp
I was walking through the West Village and suddenly I found myself holding a warm chocolate chip brioche bun. I swear, I have no how it got there! I must've tripped and stumbled into Aux Merveilleux de Fred and purchased one, unbeknownst to me. It's warm, it's pillowy, it's the kind of sweet treat that will make you perch outside on the bench and think of childhood memories. I'm sure everything else here is fine, but the chocolate chip brioche bun is something special. I'll never forget the little boy calling his dad to tell him where he was, and the boy trying to pronounce "Aux Merveilleux de Fred". "Ahoox MervikJaixucj de Fred". Top ten funniest random New York moments I've experienced.

Yelp
I'm glad this store opens 7 AM so I can enjoy fresh breakfast after arriving from my 5:15 Amtrak from Philly. The chocolate croissant is my favorite. Very airy, flaky, buttery, and moist with melted chocolate inside. Tho chocolate cramique is soft with some chocolate chips in it. I had coffee marveilloux and vanilla with speculoos. I prefer the coffee. It has airy and crispy meringue on the bottom topped with flavored whipped cream. You don't want to skip this. The first time I bought it, I made a mistake of taking it home to Philadelpha. To my disappointment it melted. This time I ate it right away. I bought a bag of meringue. They are sweet, very airy, light, and fragile. The lady who works there is very friendly and courteous. The store is clean with displays of inviting pastries.

Yelp
Great bakery. Smells so good in there. Unfortunately I came right before closing and some of the goodies were already sold out. I ended up with a Chocolate Cramique, and i love it. Nice service.

Yelp
Incredibly cute french pâtissier in the Meatpacking district. Ordered a few things to bring to my uncle as he (and I) have a sweet tooth. The brioches are fluffly and buttery. They come with sugar inside, sugar sprinkled on top, stuffed with nutella or sprinkled with raisin throughout. So many options to fit everyone's preference. All were delicious. I also ordered a few of the petite cakes ... gorgeous to look at and delicious to eat. Wrapped in different shaved chocolate (milk, white, coffee, caramel, cherry, etc) with such a delicate cake and whip cream. Must refrigerate and enjoy within 2 days as the whip cream does break down quickly, especially in warm weather! Perfect treat to enjoy or bring to a friend/party.

Yelp
Sad I didn't get to try their classic merveilleux cakes, but I got a chocolate croissant and small raisin brioche. It is very worth it for around $8, and the croissant was delicious! The bakery is small with minimal seating, but very clean. Service was also quick! I kept seeing the employees rolling out dough and baking through the windows, and it just intrigued me. This place deserves more love, and I will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Yelp
We walked by and saw the brioche buns sitting in the window and were instantly drawn in. The chocolate chip brioche was delicious!! I had never tried something like that before and definitely will come back for another! You can see the pastry chefs working through the window and they were very kind and helpful. It's a to-go spot

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood craving something sweet and stumbled upon this place on yelp. Read the reviews and came across one that said the brioche bun was oh so fluffy and reminded her of childhood memories ... well I was intrigued. Ordered a sugar brioche and a chocolate chip croissant and OMG... this was better than any of the pastries I've tried in France. 10/10 recommend. I will be dreaming of this for months until my return.

Yelp
The service was horrendous!!!! I ordered a latte without foam and the woman that was handling the expresso machine refuse to do it, stating thats how it comes out, which I don't understand since this is not an automatic machine. Making coffee is not rocket science!!!! After I removed the foam I was left with half cup of milk. I went back and asked her for an additional shot if expresso for my cup if milk, she refused after I said I will pay for it, she still was giving me grief. I asked for the manager and with an evil grin she responded Im the manager as if she was in charge of even me. Great pastries poor service!!! She is not good to be a manager. Definitely needs more training in management!!!!! Will never go back, should have gone with my first pick across the street from them Paris baguette which was full and they are accommodating and pleasant!!

Marion S.

Yelp
A cafe in midtown, a hidden gem, where you can get a good cup of coffee and rest your feet - plus grab a sandwich and a pastry. Les merveilleux are cream covered meringues made to perfection. However the choice of sandwich is limited, but the space is friendly and there is a high turnover so you can be sure of getting a place to eat/drink in peace. So glad I found it!
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Delicious pastries , unique flavor, everything I got was delicious . The brioche chocolate chip was fresh and flavorful and the merengue pastries were all very tasty. Def will come back .
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
Pastries were tasty, high quality, and well-priced, the employee we spoke to was very kind and let us have a sample of their meringue before purchasing. I had their chocolate croissant and my friend had the bread pudding, which I had a bite of. Chocolate croissant was incredibly flaky and soft, which was impressive considering we ordered 30 minutes before close (I'm sure it would've tasted even better had we come earlier in the day). Bread pudding was moist and chewy, very good if you like bread pudding in general. Overall, would definitely come again and try their meringue based items, which seem to be their specialty!
google avatar

Yelp
Best croissant in the city (so far) and still reasonable prices. Service friendly and patient while patrons debate what to select from their lovely options. Not a place to sit down (this location) but service was fast for the counter take out. Yay!
google avatar

Isabella S.

Yelp
One of the best chocolate croissants in the city! Tastes very authentic and is super flaky and buttery. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Marcel C.

Yelp
Nice interesting bakery with a lot of potential. Service was not the best - one of the young ladies seemed bothered by everyone she was assisting. Croissants were pretty good; along with the hot chocolate. Great corner location and if you seat on the second floor you get a nice view of the large glass chandelier.
google avatar

Sharmila S.

Yelp
Pretty much one of the best croissants in the city. Fresh, warm, flaky. (Please note. The coffee is not good.Sorry. Just stick with the croissant.)
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
I feel like I'm escaping to Europe when I walk into here. This has been the best croissant that I've personally had / come across in New York. The coffee is also fanatic - just a simple drip coffee with milk even hits the spot. They also have these little pastries that are delish! One of my favs I wish I could come here every morning. No seats inside btw just a quick in and out!
google avatar

Gillian A.

Yelp
Woah woah woah.....the meringue concoctions here.....super delicate little things!!! It's like eating highly sophisticated clumps of whipped cream concealed in various tasty crumble coatings. They're super sweet/rich too. Sugar bombs for sure lol. My favorite one that I tried is "the eccentric" because it's the least sweet out of the bunch and has a slight cherry flavor edge to it. As for the other ones, I took just a nibble because they're a bit too sweet for me. I'd say that if you have some sort of a sweet tooth then you'll love these (satisfies sugar cravings without the heavy feeling). Even if you don't but are still really curious about them I'd still recommend getting the cherry one!
google avatar

Yelp
The kind of place that you would consider buying a plane ticket to return to. If you miss Paris. If you love pastries. If you want to treat yourself. If you want to preserve a culinary tradition. If you trust in butter. If you have high standards for yourself and others. Get the chocolate brioche fresh out of the oven and count to 100.
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
When I peered into the window display, I saw a honeybee ambling around on a brioche bun. This is likely a strong indication of high quality pastries. The aromas - so euphoric they drew in human & endangered pollinators alike. The sweetest flower - could not have moved the bee to abandon its buttery oasis. We decided on the Magnificent (praline) & Revolutionary (caramel) mini Merveilleux's and a Pain au chocolat. There's no seating in the shop so we made our way to a convenient bench. The merengue box took a severe tumble, but survived its vigorous handling. The pastries, while notably more abstract in appearance, remained delectable in taste. "Just like lucky charms", was the word on the Caramel merveilleux. My personal fav was the hazelnut one. The ratio of cream to cake was prime which provided for a simultaneous airy/crunchy experience if you can even imagine such a coexistence. The pain au chocolate was very respectable, but we encountered a lady who was near raving about the brioche. Def trying that one next time. 100% would come back! This is the type of place that might turn your worst bully into your greatest ally.

Yelp
I've been craving a good French Croissant for the longest time. I have my favorite spot on 9th Ave but I wanted to try something new so Aux Merveilleux de Fred was my French bakery stop. The past reviews mention their signature Merveilleux but I'm here to enjoy a simple Croissant and a latte. Walking into the bakery, there is a sign outside that says: one customer at a time. I wait outside until the customer leaves and I'm greeted with a pretty smile. I tell the young lady one coffee and a chocolate croissant please. Oh, and a small bag of meringue. I'm starting to pay and this young woman slid into the small store. She starts asking questions and ignores the one guest rule. Needless to say she didn't get the same smile I did. I drop my wife off at her hair appointment and bite into the chocolate croissant. The first bite I can taste the richness from the butter. The delicate process Aux Merveilleux de Fred prepared the croissant is noticeable. It's a very elegant and nothing like I've experienced. Very very impressed. And that small bag of Meringue? So ooh la la! Aux Merveilleux de Fred, I will be back for the sugar brioche

Yelp
We were dining across the street and happened to walk but this place. We stopped in afterwards. I ordered a raisin bread. It came fresh out of the oven and was sooo good!! I also ordered a hazelnut meringue. I had no idea what to expect. It was very light, a little creamy.
google avatar

Tansy W.

Yelp
Love the sugar bread buns they have here. Service was also great - the guy who helped us was super friendly!

Alice S.

Yelp
A friend recommended their croissants , but they were overcooked (not burnt by any means, but def overcooked ), drying out the inside and leaving the outside hard , so nothing about it was flaky . It seemed like it had potential to be good if it had been cooked properly .
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the brioche! Loved the new salmon, cream cheese sandwich!!good coffee and excellent pastry and bread
google avatar

S G.

Yelp
Precious and delectable! I wanted to get another immediately after trying the Coffee flavor but was worried I'd head into a sugar coma. Loved it all, taste wise and adorable cute box makes for a beautiful presentation. A bit spendy for a morsel but something fun and different to try.
google avatar

Yelp
L'appétit vient en mangeant. That means appetite comes from meaning. Eating a treat from this place you crave more. They are temptresses of sugary, creamy, northern French goodness. The colorful cream topped meringues stopped me in my tracks. They were organized my flavor and looked like a gorgeous pixelated rainbow. I have been walking this earth for a long ass minute, and never, ever, in my whole life, have I encountered cream drenched meringues. Have you had a Le Merveilleux? Then you are fabulous!!!! I was not until tonight. Run, do not walk to this yummy little torpedo of deliciousness.
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
Soo good we came across this place by coincidence and got the coffee flavor. The texture + flavor is amazing. The service is also very good. Will come back again!!

I'm With Jane M.

Yelp
I first tried these unique desserts when I was in Paris last September and they were incredible. As soon as I found out they had a location in NYC I wanted to treat my friend. I ordered the same coffee meringue dessert I ordered in Paris and it was not nearly as good. The NYC version is densely filled with the cream and the wafer on the bottom was soggy. It is very rich and very sweet. What a huge disappointing difference from the light and airy version in their Paris store where it was hallow inside and so the richness wasn't so overwhelming. Their staff at this West Village location was very nice and attentive. Too bad the pastry standards don't translate to their USA location.
google avatar

Yelp
Got a case of 24 of the mini merveilleux (4 of each flavors). Of the six flavors, the l'Incroyable was my favorite. I love the speculoos and white chocolate combination. The Magnifique was also pretty good (especially for those who prefer nuts) but honestly way too sweet. I think despite being super small, many of them suffered from being hard to eat due to the sugar level. For being low calorie, I think I expected it to be less sweet. The customer service is curt- despite there not being a ton of other customers, the ladies seemed impatient. I was buying the merveilleux for a party and because there was no fridge displaying the merveilleux (the fridge was broken), I asked about the typical serving size per person for the mini merveilleux and was met with a "depends on how much a person can eat" (lol?) The total was ~$81 with each clocking in at $3.40. Not too bad honestly for the amount we were given.
google avatar

Virginia T.

Yelp
Yes! Yes! Yes! What yummy sweets they have!! The merveilleux were quite delicious and fresh! The service was great and we will definitely return! They have seats in the back and perhaps upstairs as well?
google avatar

Miriam I.

Yelp
THE SMELL OF THIS PLACE I walked past and saw the brioche and was like that's what I need in my life. The smell inside was INCREDIBLE. I asked what one of the bakers recommended and he said the chocolate chip one because it was gonna come out fresh so of course I listened and I also got the pearl sugar. Both so great. The coffee was pretty meh but this brioche was worth the visit.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
A shop devoted to confections composed of fluffy light bites of meringue and whipped cream is not something I expected to survive the pandemic, and yet there is now a second location by Bryant Park as well! The large windows displaying the bakers at work and the merveilleux drew me into their shop where I was recommended the Magnifique (praline and caramelized hazelnuts), the Impensable (coffee), and the Incroyable (white chocolate and Speculoos whipped cream). I thought that the balance of textures, from the crunchy meringue shell to the velvety chocolate shavings to the fluffy whipped cream kept the dessert airy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, despite the incredible amount of sugar in them. Definitely worth a visit-- and they make lovely gifts too.
google avatar

Micah L.

Yelp
Fabulous! They melt-in-your-mouth without being cloyingly sweet. Definitely going back!

Yelp
I'm undecided about Aux Merveilleux de Fred; hell, I can barely pronounce the place, named after the meringue & whipped cream dessert they specialize in. I was disappointed that I couldn't take several sampler boxes onto a flight, as these delicate "cakes" wilt if they aren't refrigerated within two hours. I purchased a mini Amarena Cherry & my lunch partner had a mini Dark Chocolate (about $7 for both.) I thought mine didn't have enough cherry flavor, & each bite sort of unceremoniously melted onto my tongue. After inhaling my merveilleux, it made me chuckle that I initially thought the regular size would be far too big for one person because I could've effortlessly packed it away. The variety of flavors intrigue me but it was like eating air & I'm looking for more satisfying substance for my calories. The nail in the coffin was the chilly, uninviting service we received from both the woman helping us & who I assumed was a pastry chef. Come to think of it, maybe I have made up my mind about (not returning to) Aux Merveilleux de Fred.
google avatar

Angelica P.

Yelp
My homie and I enjoyed our first visit here so much we made it a point to come back two more times during our vacation in Manahattan. We got the chocolate chip brioche (fresh out of the oven, few things are more heavenly than sweet bread fresh out of the oven!) and subsequent times we tried the brioche split with nutella spread (delectable), the raisin brioche (my friend inhaled before I got to try) and the bread pudding (delightfully rummy) among others. Fernando and Christy made our trip so memorable, thank you for the hospitality!!!
google avatar

Suzanne P.

Yelp
Ohmygoodness. The best chocolate croissant in my life. Everything was delicious. Worth the visit!
google avatar

Alise R.

Yelp
I stopped here last week on a recommendation from a friend who had been to their Paris bakery. There was a line to get in so I figured it was going to be good ( note: and the line moved fast). The woman working was very nice and helpful and explained the flavors. I think I got an almond one? I actually can't remember what the exact flavor name was but I think that's what I got. I sat outside on the beach and ate --It was soooo delicious. Will def come back next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Sheila T.

Yelp
The chocolate brioche here is spectacular!!! Nicely toasted. Must eat when it's warm. They weren't overly sweet and it pairs perfectly with some coffee. They were also so nice and friendly when we stopped by! Gave us samples and also gave us full detail of what they have that we can order. I wish we were able to pick some up before we headed out of the city!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Stopped in because I was passing by and the pastries looked so good I stopped in. This place is famous for its meringues. The lady behind the counter suggested I try the hazelnut meringue. It was delicious, nutty and airy. Only downside was that when you order only one it comes on a napkin so you have to basically eat it right away and there are currently no seats or tables there. Multiples come in a box.
google avatar

Abe H.

Yelp
This has become my favorite bakery. Absolutely my favorite meingue in new york city. I came by this bakery right as they were closing and the team here was so sweet as to not let me try a meringue after they closed but gave me as a token an assortment of sugar buns which were out of this world. thank you so much for your kind gesture to a rando walking on the street. Will surely be back for the delicious treats! keep up the great work!
google avatar

Jade F.

Yelp
I have never seen meringues like this before. Since there are so many raving reviews about the meringues here, I figured I would have to give it a try even it's not something I would usually get. Verdict? Oh-em-gee, what is this sorcery? It is so delicious!!! Yummy. While it's a pâtisserie, it's not overly sweet at all. I wouldn't even say it's sweet. It has a hint of sweetness while staying light and fluffy. I got a 3 chocolate croissants, 2 plain brioche, 1 chocolate chip brioche, small chocolate, small coffee, and large coffee meringue. It was super worth it. I gave a chocolate croissant and small coffee meringue to my dad and 1 plain brioche to my uncle/aunt. They all enjoyed the goodies. :) I had the large coffee meringue the next day (after getting back to Boston), and it tastes amazing, even the day after. I would totally come back again. I'm so glad I got the large coffee. The lady there told me people often get one and then have to line back up to get more. No regrets and very glad I checked this place out. :)
google avatar

Meaghan J.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous! Not as "metvrilleux" as Francois Payard, but a fabulous and dearly needed addition to an otherwise culinarily deserted neighborhood! I had a brown sugar run waffle and my son had a chocolate croissant with sparkling Evian and they were equally fabulous! Kudos!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
If you're a meringue lover like me, this place is the place to be. These melt in your mouth pastries are some of the best I've ever had. The merveilleux pastries are a delicious combination of meringues of different flavors with a smooth and creamy buttercream core. My boyfriend and I tried all 6 flavors of merveilleux and my absolute favorite is the coffee one with the white chocolate coming in as a close second. These sweet treats are airy and light, making them the perfect dessert for any meal.
google avatar

Josephine L.

Yelp
(Greatly belated 2017 review) I was talking about Aux Merveilleux the other day and realized I never left a review despite having been a rather consistent customer back in the day. There isn't much to add at this point that hasn't been said before. This bakery specializes in light, airy merveilleux, a small cake in which two light meringues are sandwiched with whipped cream, then covered with more cream and dusted with various shavings. Of the various merveilleux I tried, my favorites were the namesake dark chocolate, L'Incroyable (white chocolate), Le Magnifique (hazelnuts and almonds), and the L'Excentrique (cherry). Despite being airy, these ARE French pastries after all, so a little goes a long way in terms of sweetness. Still...if you haven't been here, you really ought to check them out. I love when a specialty place does its specialty well.
google avatar

Annie D.

Yelp
If the scent of fresh butter pastries doesn't already persuade you to stop at this bakery, read my review and wait in line! I have never tried a merveilleux before, but these tiny cream & meringue treats are absolutely delicious! The light crispy meringue combined with the airy cream topped with shards of your favorite flavor make for such a dreamy dessert. I'm so happy I found this place, because these make for a wonderful treat box to gift someone special also. We enjoyed the chocolate, praline, and caramel. We also bought the filled waffles, which are thin pressed waffles stuffed with some sugar crystals. The chocolate croissant is a winner, but they sometimes sell out to you'll ideally want to get these before the late afternoon!

Cassie C.

Yelp
Totally delicious desserts, very sweet people, adorable shop. Get the chocolate merveilleux, it's my favorite! We got a box of sixteen mini merveilleux for an office birthday and they were a huge hit. Gift boxes are free! The L'incroyable is not gluten free because it's covered in speculoos cookies, but the rest of the flavors are! This Wedt Village location is quite small and has no seating, so be aware of that, and you have to refrigerate the merveilleux within an hour because they're pretty delicate meringues. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
We were walking by the bakery and noticed their huge glass display. It's quite eye grabbing as there were a few other pedestrians stopping to check it out. We ended up getting the pearl sugar brioche. It reminded my wife of an old Jewish pastry. Upon reading the reviews, it seems the meringues are the hot item here. I'm interested in returning to try one of the meringues.

Yelp
Holy crap. The chocolate croissant I got from Aux Merveilleux was LOADS better than what I got from Culture yesterday: the croissant is perfectly flakey and fluffy, and it was CRISP and soft. 100% would come back for it again or another one of their beautifully displayed baked goods!
