Decadent and delicious French pastries, croissant, meringues and more! Great atmosphere, reasonably priced and generous portions. A wonderful spot to have coffee, espresso or lattee. They also have sandwiches and a few "to go" items. It's an open kitchen so you can see the chefs at work. There is no table service here.

When I lived in Paris in 2018, Aux Merveilleux de Fred was one of my favorite places. There was only one and the line was always out the door. Everything is absolutely gorgeous. You must stop in for the meringue with a light cloud of cream atop it or the delicious bread flecked with fine bits of chocolate or raisins. They serve fine tea and coffee and there is seating upstairs overlooking the massive chandelier and with windows overlooking the street. Transport yourself to Paris in NYC.

Google
The best pastries I had while in Manhattan. All were exploding with sweet, scrumptious flavor, from the cool and tasty chocolate and pistachio puffs to the chocolate chip brioche's pillowy soft and sweet dough, I wish I could take this place back home with me. Highly recommend!

Google
If pavlova and a cream puff had a baby, that’s the best way I can describe these little fallows of heaven. They melt in your mouth and the flavors are so decadent. Definitely a must try if you happen to pass by.

Laurel Clare

Google
The chandelier drew us in initially, and we tried the pistachio meringue (pillowy texture, super sweet), the raisin bun (freshly baked), and a couple lattes. All in price ~$22. There is a nice seating area inside (and customer restrooms).

My friend bought me a box of meringues which were delicious. It was two dark chocolate and two cherry flavored meringues. It’s so delicate that when you try to pick it up, it just crumbles so be careful when eating. The bakery alone is very pretty and lots of other pastry options. Recommend stopping by for a nice mid day treat!

Google
Quite literally the finest pastries {on par with those of Italy} that I've discovered. We were only in Manhattan for two days and so only had two mornings to enjoy our croissants and coffees before having to say goodbye (although we did grab one extra Chocolate Almond Croissant for the plane ride home), felt bad for the people next to me eating thier bag of pretzels...

Delicious and delicate pastries. The service and atmosphere were top-notch. Their meringues are heavenly. My friend and I tried different flavors, and they were all a dreamy treat. It's a beautiful location. The aroma is intoxicating. I had croissants, didn't eat them the same day, but they were still delicious and fresh-tasting.

Yelp
This is a French chain, but only based in select large cities across Europe. NYC is their only US-based locale as far as I can tell. For the price, it's more than reasonable. The banana bread is huge for $3 and among the best I've ever had. The quality of the ingredients is very high and I was talking to the lead chef at the Midtown location - the process which they employ to make their banana bread so dense yet moist and flavorful is pretty clever.

Yelp
We stopped in here while walking to the park for an event. It smells divine with tons of freshly baked pastries and freshly brewed coffee. We ended up getting the hot cocoa cocktail with hazelnuts and caramel. It was delicious and filling and the perfect treat as we walked outside on a chilly day. The price isn't bad all things considered and the staff is incredibly sweet and helpful.

Yelp
I wanted to hate this place because they exploit my number one pet peeve ... having absolutely no order in terms of the system. It is absokute bedlam trying to order. The pastry counter is a long counter with registers at one end. No start, or end, or system of ordering, is indicated. Do I wait at the case to pick out my pastry and risk cutting those at the registers? Or do I wait behind the registers and risk getting cut in line? People are scattered about and everyone is kind of looking at each other like, 'Is this where I am supposed to be?' For this reason, ordering two items took 10 minutes with only 4 other people in the store, which should have taken 2 minutes. Also, the pastries aren't laid out in an easy way to browse. Some are higher up on the back counter, forcing you to guess which is which. A better system would be so helpful. Beyond my idiosyncrycy of needing lines and order, the food is amazing. I have had all of the 'fake French' bakery foods in and around this place. NYC is obsessed with slapping white marble counters and crystal chandaliers in brightly lit spaces and filling it with mediocre croissants and French pastry. No matter how famcy your cursive writing on the little cards are, the macaroons, etc. won't be close to what you'd get even at the Paris country in Epcot, much less the city. However, this is the closest to the fresh, yummy pastries we loved in France. We had the cream filled bun, which looked blah but tasted amazing. The flavours blended so well ... sweet, creamy, doughy. The merengues were perfect. The little hand rolled pastries were a work of art. There wasn't a ton of variety here ... mostly croissants, buns and merengue. But what they had was fantastic tasting and worthy of a stop anytime we visit the city. I was a bit put off by the fact that they charge $2 per box. They'll smoosh everything into a single paper bag, if not. At $8 for two small pastries, you'd think they'd give you a box to transport them in.

Pamela J.

Yelp
How did I not know about this place? It's amazing! It's incredible! It's the kind of place you dream about. Anything you order is delicious. I especially love the raisin brioche. Next trip I'll definitely try the meringue coffee drinks. They look fantastic. Check out that gorgeous chandelier! So stunning.

Riley C.

Yelp
Best to stop by earlier in the day for most freshness. Truly the treats here are some of the best and should be a must have if in NYC. They are quick to get everything ready and helpful with understanding if you have any questions. The space is bright and open, with limited seating inside.

Sanjay G.

Yelp
I was passing by and saw this beautiful pastry shop. We did a pit stop for pastry & croissant. We ordered- Mini Merveilleux: a meringue-based thin soft shell encasing some whipped cream and sprinkled in with toppings Hot Chocolate: I'm glad some nice hot chocolate in the city. These small pastry delights are little clouds of heaven, something different, that landed on this mortal land via Lille, France, and is now also available in New York City. Beautiful ambiance, one big chandelier, and helpful staff. 4 or 5 tables are there to eat as well (2 person/table though).

Lisa M.

Yelp
OMG. Sooooo delicious. The croissant is unforgettable! Cute, cozy and clean, too. Highly recommend

Jessica K.

Yelp
Such a cute spot to stop for a coffee and a pastry! I've never had a waffle like the ones they serve there. I got the vanilla one and it's the perfect tiny treat with your morning coffee and so delicious.

Lucy C.

Yelp
Stopped in after a friend's recommendation on Saturday afternoon and waited 5-10 mins to order. Got a mini praline merveilleux and three different vergoise waffles to go (vanilla, coffee, and rum). Waffles were delicious especially the rum one; they are similar in thinness and texture to stroopwaffels but softer and rippable. The merveilleux was a bit too sweet for me but presentation including its own little box was very nice. Interior was gorgeous with the big chandelier (apparently in all locations). I didn't see how busy it was as I didn't sit. I would come back for the waffles and to try other pastries!

Honor G.

Yelp
Pros Quick service Good pastries Convenient to train Seating area Fresh pastry aroma Cons Pricey $$$!

Felicia C.

Yelp
Came here with my friend because she told me she loved the Merveilleux at this place. I have never tried Merveilleux before, but I was excited to give it a shot. Bonus points for the great service and kind cashier here! Chocolate Merveilleux - It was a creme covered meringue, but the textures and flavors were so complimentary. The chocolate was rich and surprisingly, not too sweet. Overall, I would definitely come back and try their other flavors!

Clara S.

Yelp
I got a croissant to go and it was great! Not too oily, perfectly crispy and savory. I really loved the vibe of the cafe and service was very fast and friendly. I'll definitely be back to try out their other pastries!

Mandy K.

Yelp
One word: meringues. If you've never had an incredible, melt in your mouth, fluffy, sugary delight, this is your sign to try Aux Merveilleux. They have other delightful pastries as well, but personally, the meringues are where it's at.

Ann S.

Yelp
I highly recommend the mini merveilleux (that has a lot of nuts on the outside & tasted like rocher) & the croissant. Those two were so amazzzing! I love meringues and I have never eaten a merveilleux before and it was heavenly! That croissant was so soft, flakey and buttery! I would reorder those two next time. I also tried the coffee waffle and it was on the soggy side & was ok. The brioche w/ choco chip was nice and soft but not as amazing as the croissant & merveilleux. Tons of seating in the place.

Jerry F.

Yelp
Excellent coffees and desserts and sandwiches. Such a pleasant quiet atmosphere with great music (jazz, standards, and bossa) in the background. There are more than a few tables where you can really enjoy the ambiance and converse with others or get your work done.

Sandra S.

Yelp
Wow! This place has one of the best croissant and merveilleux I have ever eaten! I regret not coming here earlier. We tried the following: 1) 5 of the mini merveilleux, 2) croissant, 3) choco chip brioche, 4) coffee waffle. Mini merveilleux - we had 5 mini ones & the best flavor was the one with nuts on it & tasted like rocher! Highly recommend that! So delicious with so many taste and textures. Superb! Croissant - one of the best croissant I have eaten in NYC. It was as good as the ones in Paris. It was so soft, flakey, and that butter they use was holy! Choco chip brioche - super soft and the choco chips enhanced the taste very well. Delish! Coffee waffle- this item was ok. It was not crispy or anything special.

Liza A.

Yelp
The closest thing to croissant bliss outside Paris. I chose a chocolate croissant that was fresh from oven. It was blissful - buttery, flakey, and melty chocolate. It was heavenly.

Gab G.

Yelp
Great option for a quick treat in what is otherwise mostly a treat dessert. I tried a white chocolate speculoos mini and praline mini - both great, though the praline was the highlight. They also have seating!

Caroline L.

Yelp
I was not expecting to stumble on a hidden gem in midtown but hey it's a flagship French bakery. Seems authentic and yummy. Best of all, cute chandelier and merengue are low calorie !

Olga S.

Yelp
Order one of the pastries for the road after witnessing the bakers hand prepare everything through the window. Was pretty tasty but didn't blow my address up.

Whitney S.

Yelp
Service was good, we were quickly greeted and the attendant gave personal recommendations making my choice much easier and she did it with a warm and welcoming smile on her face. I love the ambiance makes you feel like you stepped out of América and into France. The music, decor and this gorgeous chandelier with beautiful artwork on the walls. I had the coffee waffle which was pretty good I do wish it had more of crunch but that is a personal preference of mine. It was more of a soft waffle. Then the almond croissant had the potential to be amazing due to the high quality chocolate and this delicious amaretto almond filling by but the croissant was hard on the outside and taste like it was a day old. But overall enjoyed the experience.

Mariaela G.

Yelp
I indulged in their signature pastry - the mini merveilleux: coffee, hazelnut and strawberry- it was absolutely divine! The presence of a French pastry chef added an authentic touch to the service, and the iconic chandelier enhanced the ambiance to elite level.

Sonya S.

Yelp
A must stop each time we come to NYC. They their signature sweets and milk bread. We were lucky to be there when a freshly baked croissants moved from the kitchen to the counter. So we grabbed a couple for the road. There is nothing better than a freshly based croissant.

Amanda Q.

Yelp
I was walking by the shop and the sight of the pastries stopped me in my tracks. The merveilleux were absolutely incredible. I tried the speculoos flavor, and it was out of this world. I'll stop in whenever I'm in the city.

Bijal R.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible French bakery. Some of the best desserts ever. Interior looks luxurious and clean. Le Merveilleux was perfection. Meringue with chocolate whipped cream coated with shavings of dark chocolate. So delicious and decadent.

Neelam P.

Yelp
Expensive but worth a try at least once. Brioches were soft, mini meringues were quite good...try the cherry! Croissants were not my favorite.

Matthew M.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it as always, was amazing. This is a fresh French bakery in Manhattan. (They have a second location as well) The ambiance is elegant as you walk in but has a tiny French cafe feel. The upstairs today was closed but is usually open. You order at the counter and the people working there are nice and will explain what options you have. We had almond and chocolate croissants as well as regular croissants and some cappuccino. The chocolate almond croissant had just the right amount of soft almond filling with stripes of chocolate within. The outside was crisply but soft inside. Fantastic!! The cappuccino was rich and smooth, hit the spot. Check it out and you will love it!

Haley S.

Yelp
Love it here! Best croissants and fresh sandwiches. Love the waffles too! Not all service is really good however there is one woman who is always so rude and literally hates being there. She was so rude to us on Wednesday morning that we actually left without purchasing. Wish I caught her name.. We love getting quick breakfast and sandwich on the way to my daughter's school. Otherwise, delicious treats!

Amanda W.

Yelp
For a classic Parisian authentic real croissant I have found my spot! We've been here in paris many times and am so happy it's in nyc! Highly recommend, everything is made fresh there. So delicious. Reminds me of my Parisian days!

Chalita P.

Yelp
The croissant is a must. So warm, buttery, crispy at the top! Definitely come try the pastries but also their cute mini le Merveilleux! They recommended the top best sellers which were the white chocolate, dark chocolate, and coffee flavored.

Christina V.

Yelp
I came across this place by mistake. The outside looks amazing and the window display looked fabulous. The service wasn't not great. The place was not even busy. When I walked in there was no acknowledgment and one of the guy was making coffee and the other was having a very long intensive conversation with a customer. I don't even know what I bought. When I ate it was alright. It's just hard to describe. I am guessing I had some kind of French dessert. Since the pastry guy wasn't talking I just point and he warp up my pasty.

Grace L.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem with amazing French pastry. The owner is from Northern France. The pastries and bakeries are different from the other shops that you find in New York. I highly recommend you trying this place. The prices are affordable.

Julieann M.

Yelp
Beautiful clean bakery with decadent looking pastries. Service was good and the latte was decent. The only thing missing is savory items on their menu. I would come back for the basic croissant. If you have a major sweet tooth- this is your spot

Sam E.

Yelp
A stunning location to pick up a quick patisserie française. (I didn't just google translate that, no way...) Making my way away from Penn and stumbled upon the Midtown location, 2 floors, complete with a giant chandelier on top. There are plenty of unorthodox treats to choose from: merengues, stuffed brioche buns, crisp waffles and of course, croissants. I cannot tell if its a brilliant move or not, but in order to see the labels, you have to step outside and look at the products through the window. I ended up just going for a regular croissant and was serviced pretty quickly. Overall, its a solid croissant! Not too buttery but filled with layers upon layers. I ended my visit there sitting upon the 2nd floor, gazing at the chandelier. Would definitely come back to try their other unique options!

Nancy A.

Yelp
Nice and fancy deserts! Love taking pictures of the cute desserts! They look so pretty to eat! The box that they used to bag the desserts is very cute too. The merveilleux were tasty and pretty. Decor inside was nice and fancy looking. You can see all the pretty parties sitting inside the display for everyone to view.

Janette O.

Yelp
Decor, music and of course the delightful merengue pastries! Stop in for a sample of the merengue alone. Wonderful teas as well, was looking for a respite from work. Thank you all!!

Holly S.

Yelp
I first discovered AMDF at the OG location downtown. I never had really liked meringues until I tasted theirs. Absolutely light and not overly sweet and tons of different flavors. My favorite being the one with speculoos and the one with praline and crushed hazelnuts and almonds. The bakeries are gorgeous inside and you can see them inside preparing all the lovely menu items. Their packaging is super cute too, little boxes with handles, like fancy Munchkin boxes. Service is also excellent and they're happy to answer questions about their products. It's definitely worth stopping by to check them out.

Joanne U.

Yelp
Finally got to check this off my list today. Glad they opened one in Midtown! First and foremost, interior looks pretty, that chandelier is a major vibe. Once you step in, the smell of fresh pastries also hits you, not too much like the fake pastry smell sprays that some shops do in France, but subtle scent that's wonderful. Anyway, staff doesn't even greet customers which I found odd. Wish they were warm and nice, think that would make a difference. Tried both the croissant and the pain au chocolat. I asked if they had butter or jam, she said no (when I was stepping out I saw they had mini Bonne Maman preserves!) so that was a bummer and would have made the croissant far more enjoyable. But the quality of it is fantastic. The pain au chocolat was amazing. Honestly one of the best now in NYC. The latte was okay. Love that they have a nice space above but you hear people working and on calls the whole time. One was being interviewed. Not that it's a problem, just doesn't give off that relaxing vibe while you're enjoying your coffee. Bought 3 more pain au chocolats and a chocolate brioche for my husband and I to share this weekend. Looking forward to try the signature meringue desserts.

Karen T.

Yelp
This was a perfect little post dinner dessert / sweet treat. It also happened to be within 10 min walking distance of the hotel at NW corner of 6th and 37th, so convenient, which was key at the end of a long day. Two of the minis are basically same price as one big size merveilleux, so it helps if you know what flavors you like and don't like to begin with. I love lemon but enjoyed the mini praline more over it- and my husband committed to a speculoos one, which was also delicious. The meringue was on point. After studying abroad in Paris I have tried many a patisserie and this merveilleux was a delightful one. We'd stop by again if in the area.

Joan D.

Yelp
I love the brioches. The marvelous (sp) are divine also. But I pick up brioches and bring them home. Toast in the morning and a smile to start my day!

Rupel J.

Yelp
The pastries are very unique and SO tasty! The owner is also very friendly and nice. The shop has a very cozy vibe to it and is great for a quick stop by!

Brandon Y.

Yelp
God, I absolutely adore this place and their Merveilleux. I first tried them last year and it's one of the most luscious aerated desserts I've ever had. It's a wonder what they can do with mainly cream and meringue. The melt in your mouth meringue disks to the flavored meringue bits they use to coat each different Merveilleux, everything about it is just mmmphhhh so good. I absolutely love these. I stopped by and tried their seasonal lemon one and it's definitely up there too! Like the perfect lemon meringue pie in this form. I

Adam B.

Yelp
It's rare that I encounter a food item that is unlike anything I've ever had before, but their Merveilleux are just that! Yes I've had meringue before and yes I've had creamy mousses before. It's the combination of the two that are magical because they can build an airy tower of deliciousness together. L'Excentrique: The first one I tried since I love cherries and cream. So light and so creamy, I can't believe the mini only had 85 calories! Wasn't a strong cherry taste, but the subtlety was fine. Le Magnifique: Maybe my favorite because I loved the texture contrast of the crunchy caramelized nuts on the outside against the creamy interior. Maybe the most flavor of all of them, probably because of that coating. Le Sans-Culotte: I'm a big fan of caramel, so this one was a tad disappointing because the caramel flavor was so mild. Kinda like if you get caramel frosting instead of actual caramel drizzle. If this was rolled in little bits of actual chewy caramel, might have been better. L'Impensable: This reminded me of Le Magnifique because the crystalized coffee meringue on the outside was similar in texture to the caramelized nuts. The coffee taste wasn't super strong, but good enough for a dessert, since it's not supposed to be a morning pick-me-up. Le Merveilleux: Perfect for finding that balance of dark chocolate vs. milk chocolate. It's rolled in pungent dark chocolate shavings. And by the very nature of the center being cream centric, it tastes like milk chocolate. Really loved the combination. L'Incroyable: The speculoos inside gave some nice spiced flavor to what otherwise might have been a very bland snack. Plus the crunchy cookie texture was a great contrast to everything else that was creamy.

Yelp
Never heard of these merengue pastries so we decided to give them a try. Lovely bakery with their baked goods clearly displayed. Workers are knowledgeable and informative. Ours let us know that the merengues don't travel well so we decided to sit and eat. We chose the coffee merengue and the lemon merengue. The texture was a light and thin merengue en sing the light filling beside. What a pleasant experience. We also got an almond croissant but decided to save that for later. Will definitely have to come back to try more meringues. The only thing was that our almond croissant seemed deflated, unlike the usual puffy crescent shaped croissants. Haven't tasted it yet tho.

Josue D.

Yelp
Bought an espresso and almond croissant. The place is well decorated without being ostentatious. The baking on site is nice to see (you can peer into the kitchen) and shows in the end result. The espresso is a perfect medium - balanced floral, citrus, smoky and chocolaty tones. The almond croissant was crispy on the outside and progressively pillowy on the inside with a delicious buttery almond spread. The variability in textures was nice as most places only achieve one of the two. Anyway, I think most people will like this place - though it'd be pricey as an everyday stop. It's very different than Lou The French on the Block in Burbank, CA but it's the closest in terms of goodness I've tried in New York. If you've been, you understand.

Rina D.

Yelp
Everything looked so good when walking past this place, so I decided to go in. There was a variety of pastries, and I asked the worker what were on display. I decided to get a Chocolate Cramique, which the worker described it fluffier than the croissant. However, each bite was disappointing ): It was more of half baked dough kind of texture and I was wanting a drink after every couple bites ): Maybe some of their other pastries will be a better hit..

Irene H.

Yelp
I'd heard of this place in Paris before but didn't realize they opened here. The space itself is spacious and inviting, well located. Ordering was somewhat confusing as there is no menu posted by the case where my order was taken. You can see the items lined against the window far behind the case. I might have ordered more if it was easier to see what was offered. Service was friendly though. I ordered 2 mini Merveilleux (dark chocolate and cherry) - which I would describe as some meringue, cream, and chocolate shavings. Not something I would crave again but it's a pretty, unique dessert.

Retna S.

Yelp
This place has been in my bucket list for a long time but never had never had the chance to go to West Village area. I went to Krispy Kream donuts on 6th Avenue 38th street across the street I saw this store. Upon entering I could smell buttery fresh pastries, the meringue and croissants are displayed by the window, enticing people to come in. The chandelier is gorgeous and makes the store looks classy. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I had the Nutella-filled brioche, so good and the Nutella was freshly filled. Raisin with sugar pearl brioche is very good too, buttery and had a nice crunch from the sugar. Chocolate croissant is also fresh and buttery. It's soft and has good quality if chocolate. Definitely a must visit.

D R.

Yelp
Delicious croissants. I've had my fair share of trying croissants but this is by far the best one I have tasted. Crunchy on the outside and super fluffy inside. Would definitely come back for more.
