"Vegetarian and vegan restaurants tend to be a lot like cover bands. The majority are awful, and some are actually shockingly good. Either way, they’re performing imitations of the real thing. That’s the case, for example, at Superiority Burger, a vegetarian takeout spot two few blocks up from the restaurant in question (which has received an inexplicably large amount of press). The veggie burger is tasty, sure, and probably the best of its kind, but it’s ultimately a cover band – a veggie version of Shake Shack or Corner Bistro or whatever other burgers people like. And look: that’s fine. It’s not like the guy in the KISS tribute band really wants people to think he’s Gene Simmons. (Well, he probably does, but you know he’s not). This brings us to Avant Garden, a tiny vegan East Village restaurant operated by the owner of several bars in the neighborhood. Here’s the thing: Avant Garden is not a cover band. Rather than serve vegetables that taste like meat, Avant Garden serves vegetables that taste like vegetables. They also serve bread, and pasta. Chewy, crusty bread topped with tomato jam and pickled peaches? Turns out that’s totally vegan. We’ve never eaten anything exactly like it in a restaurant, meat-serving or not. And that’s the case with the dishes throughout the menu here: they’re legitimately original. They’re also legitimately extremely tasty. Like most good artists, Avant Garden is definitely inspired and informed by other food. The beets dish definitely shares some qualities with a tuna tartare, and one of the mushrooms we ate tasted a lot like a scallop. But we felt smart when we realized that, not like we’d been asked to suspend our disbelief and pretend that beet was actually raw fish. Avant Garden may not be the kind of music you usually listen to, and eating there isn’t necessarily going to convert you into a diehard of the vegan genre. The experience also comes with some quirks, as opening yourself to new things often does. In this case, the tiny, unventilated space and open kitchen mean the room can get very smoky. Service can also be a little funky, probably due in part to the fact that there’s barely anywhere for the servers to stand. But you’ll get over it – trying new things is good, and you’ll definitely get to do that at Avant Garden. Food Rundown Tomato Jam, Pickled Peach, Tomato, Almond Ricotta, Basil Toast The first part of the menu is devoted to toasts, which are served on fantastic bread that apparently comes from Balthazar. This one’s the best of them – at once sweet, tangy, savory, creamy, and crunchy. I don’t even like tomatoes and I still would have ordered another. Peas, Cucumber, Beans, Whipped Tofu, Mint Toast Do you know about cucamelons? They’re tiny cucumbers that look like mini watermelons, and they are on this toast. This one’s lighter and brighter, with a lot of crunchy vegetables. If you’re the person who eats the whole crudite plate, you’ll like this one a lot. Beets, Mango, Avocado, Black Sesame, Tamari, Tobanjan, And Lime This is the rare dish that actually tastes as good as it looks. The beets sit on top of a creamy guacamole-type situation, with some salty, crunchy things that look like Rice Krispies. Farro Risotto, Butternut Squash, Baked Apple, Sage Pesto, Crispy Farro Putting pieces of crunchy, toasted farro on top of soft, cooked farro? That’s farroception, and it’s genius. This one’s basically Fall In A Bowl, and we like it a lot, though it is a bit sweet. King Oyster, Maitake, Smoked Macadamia, Crispy Leeks We were genuinely unaware that mushrooms were capable of tasting this way. Whatever’s going on here is beyond our understanding of fungi, but you definitely want it on your table." - Hillary Reinsberg

This is a great shop but it's by appointment only since the beginning of Covid. Call to schedule an appointment, it's totally worth it. Fair prices and lots of great treasures.

Yelp
The owner is incredibly rude. Walked in and she was annoyed we opened the door and then told my kid not to touch any of the clothes. Super unpleasant person.

Yelp
I love this place. They have the most hard to find items! It's great!! Andrea, the owner is so lovely. I've been going here for years. It's an amazing store. Definitely check it out!

Brooke B.

Yelp
It's time to get your Yelp page updated. Really and truly an annoying experience to come during "open hours" only to see an in uninviting entrance and by appointment only. I feel bad for your cute neighbor plant shop, if I wasn't from out of town I'd have bought from them.

Bret C.

Yelp
Arrived at 6pm. Hours posted open until 7pm. Now sign says by appointment only. Another example of Portland's businesses trying hard to not serve customers.

Yelp
I've walked by this store for the past two years .. always a little too intimidated to walk inside. Well today I strolled on in and so happy I did . Wonderfully curated pieces and so many fun wacky vintage tee shirts. The owner was very kind and greeted me right as I walked in. I tried on 5 dresses from 5 different decades and took home a funky mrs roper era maxi dress for 18 dollars :) . Definitely worth a visit :)

Yelp
Excellent store, great selection, and lovely owner. I've been shopping here for over a decade and glad to see it's still around. The owner has a great eye for interesting and unusual pieces, and is a total sweetie. Happy to report that the prices are still affordable. It's a special place!

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place and decided to give it a shot. I saw a few decent items, however the quality didn't remotely match the prices. The only interaction we had with the employee and owner were when they were trying to justify the holes/stains on every single item we looked at. With so many vintage shops in Portland, all I can say about this place is "meh." Edit: after viewing their reviews, dating back to 2011 and earlier, one major issue seems to be the owner "Andrea." She was negative and short with me when I mentioned possibly helping her with some promotional photography. And was also complaining about getting kicked out of her apartment. Idk girl, get your sh*t together.

Yelp
I found my vintage soul sister here. Everything in the store felt like it was hand-picked for me. I was so surprised by how much fit in such a small space and how organized it was. And I just loved that the shop owner let me and my homegirl just chill in the store look around at our leisure while she stepped out. Biggest pet peeve is hoovering shop owners that talk too much. Will come back when I visit . Great selection.

Yelp
This place wasn't open when I tried to go there on a Saturday afternoon. They did not have a website or have hours posted on their Facebook page. Apparently the owner only opens up the shop if you call first. Then she will close it after you leave. Don't get me wrong, its an OK vintage shop and all, but that is a very awkward way to run a business. I felt like i had to buy something because she opened up specifically for me. Because I felt so pressured as a first time customer, I wont return.

Yelp
Avant Garden is a well stocked vintage clothing store on 28th and Stark. Count on it being open at around 10 pm on any give night (but never noon!), so go after dark if you want to find the doors open for you. In addition to well-rounded vintage clothing for both men and women, Avant Garden stocks accessories and a fair amount of old foregin posters. The friendly proprietor brought out the vintage glasses frames collection she keeps behind the counter and her prices are better than most!

Lauren G.

Yelp
Ooh, the numerous times I've walked by avant garden, glanced at the rack outside, and just kept walking. What a fool i've been! I finally stopped into this vintage store and was super impressed. There are a bunch of clothes (many dresses!!), a ton of accessories, a handful of housewares, and a cute cute little pug dog who wants to be your best bud. I accept, and thank you! The owner is super nice and friendly and I love it when people working at stores like this know their merchandise and make suggestions cause they know what they have that would work for you...She showed me a dress that she hadn't put out yet because she needed to do a tiny bit of mending to it and while I looked around, she fixed it up, I tried it on, and bought it. Wise woman. Lots of cute vintage glasses and girly such and such. Oh, there's dude stuff too! Great shirts and jackets and so forth. also..."avant garden"? love it

Yelp
Why even have a window if you tell your neighbor businesses to tell those like me to NOT look at what you have? Weird. Most of your inventory comes from MY business which is estate sales.... think again how you operate. Plus your window selection of Fostoria glass is boring.

Jena S.

Yelp
The Zinesters Guide to Portland had a recommendation to head here so I figured why the heck not? There were some great finds here. Got an 80s style waitress dress (straight out of Twin Peaks minus the coffee) and a 60s slip nightie that I'll be donning for all the sleep over parties that I complain about Sandra Dee at. The owner had a BUNCH of great real vintage frames but (thankfully for my wallet) none of them fit. Not a bad little spot to check out for zinesters and non-zinesters alike. The pug that greets you at the door is also adorable.

Lena W.

Yelp
This is one of my all time favorite vintage shops in Portland. It's a tiny boutique with an array of vintage apparel and miscellany from various eras and man, it is marvelous. I've gotten some of my favorite dresses there, although it's pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to finding one that suits/fits you as they go through over 45 dresses a week. The owner and employee(s?) at Avant Garden make sure that the clothing has been thoroughly looked over and fixed up before it's on the racks. Their prices are also quite reasonable. The one reason this shop didn't get a five star review is because their hours are ridiculous. I never know if they'll be open or not even if the owners says they will according to the hours on their answering machine.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Excellent selection of a variety of vintage items. I enjoyed looking through the books, cards, and pins, especially. They have a big selection of vintage clothing. Some of it looked like the things my grandma wore in the 1970's. Although I wouldn't wear them today, they did make me smile. I was really looking for an old suitcase that could decorate and repurpose. Sure, they had a few, but they were so pricey I just couldn't consider them. Too bad, but it was fun to look, anyway. I would return if I were looking to purchase old costume jewelry or vintage clothing to be worn as a costume.

Dharma C.

Yelp
Mucho dinero and not a lot to choose from. Tiny shop, nice owner who was sitting at the bar next door. Probably won't return because there's no selection...

Becky C.

Yelp
I love this place! Avant Garden has a lot of cool vintage apparel and accessories, and they're open late which has been super convenient for me on many occasions. On a recent visit, I got an adorable vintage black patent leather bag, a 1960s bracelet, and some fun red 1980s pumps. So many great finds, and the owner is amazing and helpful! She even opened the store late one night so I could buy a lovely cashmere scarf to wear on a chilly night. I like to have one of a kind accessories, so vintage is the way to go if you don't want to spend a fortune but still want to be stylish and unique. The prices are reasonable and the selection is always changing. So far, I've only looked at the women's clothing and accessories, but there is a large selection of men's items as well.

Yelp
Although this place does have the occasional good vintage dress in the right size for me I've always been underwhelmed by the atmosphere. Every time I've been there the employees have been gossiped away about such topics as "which of their friends was wasted last night", "why Jenny and John aren't dating anymore" , and "how long Diana is going to be in rehab". Most of the time I want to leave just to avoid such pointless chatter. The owner, Andrea, has always come across as rude, distracted, and unhelpful. By far not my favorite vintage store in Portland. Zero stars for customer service. Two stars for the the clothes.

Suzanne A.

Yelp
Every time I'm up in Portland, I go visit Andrea and her pug Milo at Avant Garden and always find something cool (clothes, jewelry, chotchkes, furtniture). She has great stuff, great taste, great prices (especially compared to SF, which is ridiculous!). And she has this cool old massage chair that still works - so nice to sit in after a half hour of looking through the racks. Her hours are a little funky - she usually opens around 2pm and stays open late to take advantage of the evening foot traffic to the local bars and restaurants. She just lives upstairs so she'll also leave her phone number on the door and will run down and open the shop just for you. She also buys clothes, so if you're cleaning out your closets, have her take a look at your stuff. And then go get some pizza at Stark Naked Pizza next door, or a beer at Bonfire.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Usually thift shops are either dirty and cheap, or cute and pricy. Avant Garden is a rare combination of a carefully and lovingly selected stock of vintage ware for totally bargin prices. Leather jackets from $10-15, sweaters for a dollar, strange accessories and decor. Great find.

Haley D.

Yelp
This shop was actually recommended to me by another store owner down the street at SMUT Vintage, as I had arrived right around closing time. Avant Garden was a nice little store with tons of great deals on vintage clothing. The buttons and the jewelry with both well priced and I got a great skirt for a dollar in the $1 bin. I'd certainly recommend it. Something I don't see mentioned on the page is that this store opens fairly later on in the day (usually around noon to two) and is open late into the night, far after other stores close. Because of that fact alone I love this store.

Emily M.

Yelp
I can't really say anything other than to reiterate the other yelpers comments that this place rocks! I got the cutest little dress for $9, a steal! These are garage sale prices, but better quality. And, get this, they are open until 10pm- what? You can get drunk next door and then do my favorite thing...shopping tipsy. Hells yes.

Yvonne G.

Yelp
I always get super rad and great priced vintage here! If you know how to sew, it's one of my favorite spots to get fixer upper dresses and skirts for a good deal. Plus there is always that Sweety Mc.PugFace dog I love to give pets to when I'm there.

Jo C.

Yelp
A wonderful store with a wonderful owner. I love the posters and pins especially. Conveniently located in my neighborhood. I also love the home goods section. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great vintage shop with nice prices.

Melanie Z.

Yelp
When I went the store was closed for the day but because I was from out of town Andrea was nice enough to open up the store just for me! There was a wide range of vintage clothes from multiple different periods at reasonable prices as well as funky sunglasses, jewelry, shoes, bags, vintage photos etc... Andrea was extremely helpful and friendly and I would definitely recommend the store to anyone looking for unique vintage clothes or accessories!

Ryan S.

Yelp
This place is awesome! They are open late (sometimes you have to call the number on the door to get someone to come down) and they have tons of good stuff for low prices! I've picked up vinyls, old Atari cartridges, and other games for cheap (no more than $5 a piece). Love this place!

Breylan D.

Yelp
Great stuff, open late, awesome owner. Isn't this the stuff Portland is made of? Definitely stop here.

Alica P.

Yelp
Truly what I expect a vintage store to be. It's a rather cozy place but its packed with lots of genuine and quality vintage pieces available at crazy affordable prices! It's hard not to feel nostalgic for another time and place wandering through this little gem of a shop.

James L.

Yelp
So incredible. Almost like a curated museum. I'm a fiend for this stuff and people should consider this a gem.

raven t.

Yelp
You can't get better than this, especially in Portland! An adorable little shop packed with cool trinkets and excellent vintage clothing, eyewear and accessories (as well as a Max Headroom t-shirt hanging on the wall); the owner of the shop is helpful, considerate, awesome and friendly. As is her little pug! All in all, I ended up finding three pairs of frames that I liked after finding none anywhere else! There isn't a thrift-loving soul I wouldn't recommend this shop to! After my first visit I know I'll be back! Definitely the unsung hero of Portland vintage shops.

C G.

Yelp
This store is open late and has GREAT stuff, including some rad vintage corsets. I found a 1950's dress there in perfect condition that fit like a glove and was incredibly well priced. I highly recommend you check it out and you can stop for a cocktail up the street when you're done!

christine b.

Yelp
At first it was closed during stated business hours( but her cute pug was was not feeling well at all) so I called the number on the door and she came almost immediately down and let my friend and I in to shop. Wow.....while not really a "thrift store", it was full of all the sorts of things I love.....vintage crapola everywhere! The owner really is nice and knows her merch. The vintage chinese bric-a-brac is awesome! I ended up buying a wind-up clock with a pic of chinese opera players on the face......it is so pretty! My friend bought an amazing purple 50s dress and cute fitted 40s- 50s gingham jacket. This store is definately geared towards the feminine hipster girl, but also offers a thing or two for her boyfriend or her boifriend. I highly recommend stopping in.
