"Things just got a little sweeter at the Avery Bar within the Ritz-Carlton, Boston with the launch of Avery Bar Chocolate late last month. Each Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. through the holidays, pop into the hotel bar and warm up by the marble fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate and accompaniments by pastry chef Christoper Goluszka. His concoction is a mix of Maracaibo Créole milk chocolate — a cream-forward chocolate with hints of caramel — and Maracaibo Clasificado dark chocolate, with notes of coffee, plum, and orange blossom. Adults can choose to spike their sip with their spirit of choice, and kids can enjoy a more classic (booze-free, naturally) hot cocoa. Alongside hot chocolate, savor candy cane shortbread cookies, double-fudge brownies, vanilla bean marshmallows, caramel whipped cream, and more. The sweet escape sets you back $20 per adult and $12 per child. Stop in after a day of shopping downtown, or when you just need a chocolatey pick-me-up." - Nathan Tavares

Google
Beautifully crafted cocktails. The Lion’s Tail is delightfully refreshing. After a day of walking and shopping it’s the perfect place to relax with a cocktail and snack. A lively place to people watch.

Google
Phenomenal experience every time. The bartender, Joel, is one of the most talented bartenders I've met. Food is great. Very comfortable and quiet most nights but even when its busy the experience is lovely.

Drop by in December and enjoy the warm, fuzzy feeling of Christmas.

Google
Very intimate bar with piano and fireworks. I stoped by for a bite and everything is delicious I was surprised by the quality for bar food. They serve food til midnight. Our server Jack was great, very attentionate and professional

Google
My friend and i stopped by on a whim and had the best experience! The bartender Joel made us custom cocktails that were excellent, and the atmosphere was chill and cozy. We will definitely be back!

Google
Absolutely spectacular experience. Professionally made drinks, expert suggestions, and fantastic atmosphere. Our Bartender, Joel was especially impressive! 10/10 would recommend.

My boyfriend and I stopped in here before a show at the Opera House and loved it! The vibe is classy but also cozy. They had a terrific pianist and a fireplace. We sat at the bar and the bartender, Jack, was great. He was friendly and very knowledgeable about all types of drinks. We will definitely be back.

This is one of my favorite spots... in the world. The designer made the space modern, trendy, homey all at the same time. This is a place for a drink and conversation, not dancing or watching the game. The cocktails are creative and executed well. It is pricey, but that is to be expected being in the Ritz.

Yelp
I went here for the Saturday hot chocolate experience. It was very confusing and disorganized to figure out how to get seated. We were waiting in a cluster/line but there was no host to facilitate the seating. I think it was self seating? And then the service was very very slow. The interior was gorgeous and the hot coco was cute and fun. I think if they were more well staffed this experience would have been better.

Yelp
A hotel's lobby bar should *not* be closed two days a week (Sunday and Monday). While it's nice to look at, the layout is inefficient and confusing and with low furniture, my pet peeve as it's hard to get up from. Also it was closed (full of people) one morning for a private party, thus elimanating a positive perk of staying in nice hotels -- the ability to have a coffee / business meeting in the lobby with a colleague. Amazingly, even while closed it was pretty full on a Sunday night (confusing) because people went to the open bar and carried drinks over until it closed.

Yelp
Stopped in after dinner on our way up to our room. Cocktail list is small and uninspired. Ordered an espresso martini (dark) and it was OK. The bartender was nice but didn't know how to mix drinks. His Cosmo was way too pink, for one. after seeing how bad he was at mixing drinks, I opted for a glass of wine next lol. PASS!

Yelp
I love this bar. But what kinda of hotel bar has last call at 10p on Sat? Wtf!! A group of 5 came in post theater and the place was packed but they were no longer serving. That's just pathetic.

Stephanie Q.

Yelp
Avery Bar is sexy. Located in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton, the bar is horse shoe shaped, behind a fireplace. There are also tables and chairs if you prefer. The cocktail list is rather limited. It is called the "Avery 10" so there are only 10 cocktails. The cocktails are very well crafted though. I had no. 6, the harvest mule, which is a moscow mule. It was very well done. I also tried no. 2- gin & juice. you get a bottle of Hendrick's and a small pitcher of juice, and you mix the 2 together. Each cocktail is $15 a pop, definitely Ritz-Carlton prices. We were served mixed nuts and mustard pretzels. Those were delicious! Overall, a really nice bar that is pricey.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for cocktails, a night cap or pickies and drinks. I've enjoyed myself each time. The decor is fantastic. Lot's of neutral colors, serene and cozy. There are plenty of seats and sofas scattered around as well as a centrally located bar. The bartenders are great. They make a fantastic Last Word! The drinks were all fantastic however we didn't love the food. We tried the mushroom pizza and truffle fries. A fantastic place to pop in for drinks when downtown.

Savvy T.

Yelp
This is a cozy bar with excellent bartenders and cocktails! PERFECT FOR CHRISTMASTIME because the ambiance is warm, beautifully appointed and, as the lobby of the Ritz Carlton, buzzy and full of cheer. There is a sleek fireplace on one wall, and great entertainment too. The bartenders crafted several holiday dessert cocktails which were divine. The wine list is well curated, too. Four stars because seating is limited and not as comfortable as the setting is inviting.

Neechi M.

Yelp
On the pricey side but it's nice and low-key (read: not very loud) and they make a perfect Vesper. I'm not generally a fan of hotel bars but this place is elegant and has comfortable seating. It also has never been full/packed (been there twice) and has a nice fireplace that makes for a cozy experience (great for those cold winter nights). It's a great place to have a drink before waiting for one of the shows in the area (musical, opera, movies) or if you're staying at the hotel but I don't think I would make a night of it or anything. Also, if you don't get complimentary nuts/pretzels, ask for them -- they are delicious, especially the pretzels.

Jenn H.

Yelp
Death by chocolate. I totally under estimated the holiday hot chocolate bar. You make your own hot choc with any fillings from cream, marshmallow, choc, cookie bits etc.. You also get to choose the option of sweets & pastries. On the 1st glance I thought that's so little but the sweet addict inside me couldn't finish it!! I couldn't even finish my 2nd mug. I guess $36 is kind of pricey for an afternoon tea.. It was yummy but fairly average.

Mike F.

Yelp
The room and music is why i gave 2 stars. the drinks were ehh. The food was microscopic and fair. What a great disappointment. I live in the city and im very disappointed. Save your money and go elsewhere

Aaron J.

Yelp
Cozy, modern, and for now what feels like a hidden gem in the Chinatown/Downtown area. Located in the Ritz-Carlton lobby, which means free WiFi for all. The specialty cocktail and food menu need a bit of developing (seemed a bit too "old world" for me--not every cocktail needs dark liquor and bitters, thanks) and the beer selection is kind of lame, but it's such a lovely space to spend time in that you'll be willing to overlook these things. I promise.

Mitchell W. L.

Yelp
Pricing expensive, but quality drinks and service was outstanding. We broke a glass on the floor and the wait staff was so kind and when we tried to help clean up, they refused. It was a lovely experience and very luxurious as it is situated in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton.

Sonia N.

Yelp
As for as hotel bars go, this is a nice option. It's a great little hideaway from the hustle and bustle of mainstream Boston and all its frantic frenzy. The roaring fireplace first lured me off the street but the nice wide leather seats kept me feeling comfy and cozy. Martinis are priced around $15 which to me is the norm these days. Free complimentary nuts too. Perfect place to be if you're looking around for a place to have some conversation.

Hilary H.

Yelp
The Avery Bar is gorgeous: modern, sleek, luxurious. But don't be fooled: interiors and ambience are no replacement for a delicious, artfully-crafted cocktail, kids. I was all excited to have a drink at this beautiful, spiffy bar. The bartenders were all so sharp, and I assumed the exquisite taste of the design would extend to the cocktails, but sadly, they were mediocre. In fact, mine wasn't good. I had the Cumber Collins, which is (I believe) intended to be a schmancy, artisinal version of the Tom Collins as it features Hendrick's. sea salt and lime-infused ice cubes. Really, it just tasted like a G&T, which I do not like. At all. I would have asked for another drink if our server had come back to check on us, but he never did. In fact, we sat there for a full fifteen minutes AFTER our glasses were drained trying to grab the attention of just about anyone, but no one ever looked out way - not even the bartenders who were less than 5' from us. I'm serious. When we finally were able to grab someone, she was extremely curt and put-out by us asking for our bill. It took another five minutes for her to return with it. I bet you're not surprised to hear me say skip this one, kids -especially with all the drinks options in this neck of the woods.

Yelp
What I love about the Avery Bar is its lounge. Every morning after breakfast, I come to this lounge to study and run errands. It's very quite and peaceful; and my work never gets disturbed. You even don't have to worry about guests creating noise from checking in and out. And the cool thing is that after 5pm the lounge turns into a bar which I reward myself with a nice glass of wine. Cheers to Ritz Hotel for putting together a beautiful lounge where I can study and work!

Cody C.

Yelp
most beautiful bar in boston. sterling the bartender is incredibly personable. fireplace is ridiculous. mid century modern/sexy as hell. marble. wood. fire. iron light fixures. even the pretzel/nut mix was the best bar snack i've had. so happy to have found this place! new favorite hands down.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
3.5 stars - classy and upscale but pretty much just a lobby bar. $$$ drinks and tasty bar menu for a nice albeit pricey retreat from the chaos of Downtown Crossing. Our event party enjoyed good service while there on a weeknight. Likely won't return given price, lacking ambiance.

Josh B.

Yelp
The hotel bar, a dangerous adventure unto itself, sometimes amazing, sometimes the biggest mistake you'll ever make. Avery did everything right and with the level of service you would expect from the Ritz-Carlton and a downtown convenience. If you're looking for a swanky place to meet up before the big heist look no further than the Avery. Wait, wait stop the presses! I forgot to talk about the most important thing: the booze. Stiff and to the point classics with the occasional twist. I had a agave sazerac and the lady had a bloody mary. Sazerac gave a fine buzz with a fantastic finish and the bloody mary sparkled with fresh tomato juice and cracked pepper. I didn't watch the presentation but I can say the finished product is fantastic!

Yelp
Very very cozy! Lots of books and crannies to settle into. My husband and I call this place the "Mad Men Bar". Decor is so mid century modern. Just fun to be in. Drinks and food are pricey! Sometimes the crowd is bit cheesy but other times just regular people.

Brian M.

Yelp
Big fan. Great spot for a nice drink before/after dinner. It won't be crowded. The room is beautiful and you'll have to pay a bit more than usual. It's a bar at the Ritz g-dammit.

Corey L.

Yelp
Stopped in after a movie on Saturday night for drinks. The place has a big fireplace, nice couches, and is pretty relaxed. Waitresses were very attentive. And attractive :) Got free spiced pretzels and nuts, which is always awesome. Drinks were the price you would expect for the area and were good. Not a huge selection, but solid. This is a good chill place to relax and chat with a nice atmosphere.

M W.

Yelp
Worst bartender I have had in a long time. I don't care if you were not originally scheduled to work tonight. I don't want to hear you mutter under your breath that you need a drink. I don't want to see your back all night. I don't want you to fit my order in between some long conversations you are having with a girl friend at the bar. Smile. Make me feel wanted. OR get a manual labor job that does not require a personality. JEEZ!

Jackie C.

Yelp
It was a good place! The bar was well lit which is always nice so that you can see who you are talking too. It wasn't too loud - I could actually here the friends I was with. The lounge sections were great with great service. It didn't have any crazy, college, drunk kids around but ADULTS who were just out for drinks and a good time. It was beautiful, modern but still had a cozy feel. We will definitely be back.

Jordan B.

Yelp
The Ritz Carlton Avery Bar is located immediately off the main entrance to the hotel and features a nice fireplace, mid-century modern furniture and a fully stocked bar great for cozy evenings. It's a great place to have a drink before waiting for one of the shows in the area (musical, opera, movies) or if you're staying at the hotel. The food is good especially the lobster tacos and bacon wrapped scallops.

Michelle B.

Yelp
Came here last night with my lady friends for a Gilt City deal for their Tuesday Tea Party. I really liked the space; classy, not stuffy, and super comfortable. Service was very good. Our waitress at first didn't know about the tea party stuff, but immediately got our drinks out to us and put in our food order. A friend met us about 40 minutes after we had been there, so her food order went in late, and there was a bit of a mixup as to where it actually was at one point, so the waitress apologized profusely and brought us over a free cheese plate to make up for the error while our friend's food was being located. Like I said - classy! The drinks are pricey, but MAN, are they well made. I had a Cucumber Collins that was literally the most refreshing drink I've had all summer - and I assure you, I've sampled a lot of drinks this summer. :)

Yelp
This is a great bar nestled in the Ritz Carlton hotel. It's warm, inviting, quiet, and classy - and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. My friend and I came here after a terrible experience at Artisan Bistro next door, and we were floored at the difference between the two places. We were warmly greeted by the bartender before we even sat down at the bar. We were feeling to order some wine, and the bartender was knowledgeable and walked us through their selection. Their cocktails are on the pricier side, but their wine and beer is pretty consistent in pricing with other bars. Will definitely come here again!

Nicole R.

Yelp
As an addition to the Ritz- Carleton main lobby, Avery Bar definitely is well modeled. It boasts an attractive set-up with an intimate space, modern decor and even a raised fireplace on the far wall, which is a welcoming invitation to guests. I think there is adequate seating for an often less-than-packed venue, and it's nice to have the option between raised bar seating and the more lounge-style couches and chairs. I had visited Avery Bar on a Tuesday night, so I guess there is not much that can be said about the very few guests that were present. I actually sat at the bar so as to get quicker service and have a view of the bar scene and the lounge in the back. The bartender was actually quite knowledgeable and very sociable as well. She definitely made the visit more enjoyable. My friend and I did a mix of cocktails and Pate (which has since been taken off the menu, thank God). The pate was very watery and lacked any real flavor. Again, I am happy this has been removed from the menu. The cocktails were actually quite good, both of us chose from the "Avery Ten" listing. We went with the Fire and the Martinez, both were quite good. Well made and well proportioned in terms of ingredients. Again, the bar was not packed on a Tuesday night, so not much can be said for visitors to this venue. I do think the decor is well presented and up to the typical standards for a Ritz as well. I think the menu has been spruced up a great deal since my last visit as well. This is also a good recommended stop off for a martini before heading into Artisan for dinner.

Karyn V.

Yelp
I know its the Ritz, it is expensive. They lose one star for what I see as over-the-top prices. Some items deserve a premium, but for other items it is just greed. The service is usually excellent, but it is not always impeccable. Perhaps, I would give back this star if it had not faltered. My only complaint is the bartenders can sometimes be slow to take care of people at the bar, when it is slow or busy. Their conversation topics when it is slow can also sometimes deviate into the inappropriate. Their cocktails are great. They also have a good scotch selection, but you will pay for it. The food is fantastic, but the prices are not. I like it here. It is a good place for a special occasion. If you go here, just don't expect a cheap night out.

Rachael R.

Yelp
Gorgeous Danish-modern remake. Lots of cozy corners with couches, coffee tables, intimate lighting. A great place to bring 8-10 people and still get a good table. I love to slip in here after a movie. Typically it is seat-yourself. You must walk through the lobby of the hotel, the bar is in the back, it's not the same as the front restaurant. Unfortunately I must suggest skipping the speciality cocktails. I've tried three and they are all just as weird as they sound, will no delish-payoff. Plus, if you order a standard drink (like for me, a whiskey sour) it should cost $2-$3 less than menu prices.

Mashka I.

Yelp
The excellent: Service, wifi, wine, espresso until close, menu The space could be better - either more airy or more dark. The recent renovation cut off the bar from the dining area with a big wall, making the bar feel cramped. For a completely different bar scene, try the Ritz lobby bar just through the connecting doorway - fireplace, couches, bar tables, large U-shaped bar. Both offer a calm place to work/study for a few hours.

Galavanting G.

Yelp
It's a shame this place isn't bigger, but I guess that's what the alternative bistro next door is for. The drinks are expensive but they are very well made because the bartender is truly experienced and is very into the final product. The food menu is a complete joke though. As for the clientele, it's sad the Ritz attracts some real gems. I would given this place 5 stars if the food menu was better/server later, bigger bar, clientele was a bit better. I'm astounded how often drunks roll into this place.

Mike G.

Yelp
not really a hotel bar, as such. more like a low-key hangout. that i like a lot.

Jessica C.

Yelp
I ordered the Sweet martini, and it was barely palatable. The beer nuts are amazing; they include these delicious honey mustard pretzels. The ambience is nice with a cozy fireplace and interesting light fixtures, but nothing to write home about. I was thoroughly disappointed.

Nate Y.

Yelp
How the Avery Bar is situated in the Ritz Carlton it seemed this was more of an afterthought, but it works. Going through the doors keep going straight ahead, rather than to the right to the bistro restaurant, and there you are. The decor is post modern as reflected by the furnishings and the long fireplace in the back. There are many comfortable seating areas which are great for hanging with a group of friends. Drinks are more expensive than other cocktail bars of similar caliber, probably $2-$4 more. Their drink menu lists various martinis, wines, specialty cocktails, and beer, but you can order any cocktail that you have in mine. Some friends wanted whiskey and the waiter named a fairly good selection. A good time had by all, even if the bar tab was a bit prickly.

Joanne C.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place! It has a warm, mature atmosphere, with a fireplace in the backdrop. I love the shape of the bar. The drinks are great (on the pricier end. But it's the Ritz!). The best part is the bar food - DELICIOUS. Cheese platter is outstanding. Not too crowded on a Thursday night. FANTASTIC PLACE!

Liz M.

Yelp
Pretty spot, with a nice fireplace. We enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail. Cocktail was average, but pricey. Staff was helpful and the other patrons at the bar friendly. If you are staying in the hotel, it's a relaxing spot to grab a quick drink while enjoying the fire. Wouldn't say it is anywhere destination-worthy.

Ryan A.

Yelp
Had a great evening of drinks at the bar courtesy of Sterling. Will be back.

Laurin J.

Yelp
Every time I come to the Avery Bar I have a great time. Last week Shakil Ahammed was bar tending and he could not have taken better care of my date and I. Shakil was engaging, funny, and didn't hover. I definitely recommend going to the Avery!

Ren T.

Yelp
While I should love this place as I helped out with the construction when the project manager quit. The service was horrible, for any price, never mind their inflated prices.

Jill G.

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere and delicious drinks. Usually a good amount of people and friendly servers

Eric K.

Yelp
this is a hot spot. The drinks are delicious, the service is outstanding. Jayke and Jenny are amazing and so welcoming. The bartender is very good at what she does. I felt at home and very snug by the fireplace with my friends and drinks. I am glad not a lot of people know about this place because it was not crowded like so many bars are. Will definitely come back.
