The Best Breweries in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Having outgrown its original location behind the Toffee Club, Away Days Brewing has since relocated to the Brooklyn neighborhood. Its bright, yellow exterior evokes the new life given to this former linen manufacturing facility that sat vacant for nearly a decade. This new spot, though cozy, is nonetheless bright and open during the summer, with the roll-up doors open and the patio full of chatter. Inside, locals gather to watch footy on the telly year-round. The patio, freshly muraled with colorful cartoon characters, is of particular note, as it’s home to locally acclaimed burger pop-up-turned-cart Champs Burgers. English milds and other British styles pair classically well with pub food like burgers and fries, and so this business collab ends up top of the table." - Ron Scott

Delicious beers! Really friendly staff and a great atmosphere, so happy to have a walkable, welcoming new chill spot within walking distance in the hood. Brooklyn’s where it’s at!

Gorgeous European inspired brewery with amazing design and delicious beer. Away days is doing something outside the Portland norm, and it’s so refreshing. Their bright, colorful space makes you want to stay awhile. Their beer is solid and the food (weekends only) is worth your time!

Amazing brewery with a great skill for making pills. Cora was by far the showstopper.. Cheers to the taproom manager for his great personality and knowledge of the brewery. See you soon Brian.

Shrieking children and babies (at a brewery), people yelling and talking as loudly as they possibly can, tables and chairs on the sidewalk blocking someone in a wheelchair from being able to safely be on the sidewalk. Bad pop music DJ sets on the loud speakers. This is a residential neighborhood. Y’all come on…you’ve got people living RIGHT next door. It used to be really nice to have the windows open to catch a breeze or maybe even sit outside in our backyards…now we have to her every single detail of drunk people’s so very interesting conversations. This is not it.

They put a brewery in a quiet neighborhood. It used to be nice to sit outside. Now I want to break my lease because the point of living here was the outdoor space that didn’t have someone else’s music blasting and drunk people yelling conversations thirty feet away. This place is the building sized equivalent of the person who listens to loud music on public transportation.

Yelp
I really, really, really enjoy going to Away Days. The ownership are such a gracious couple who clearly appreciate doing what they do. I was there this weekend for some of the Euro futball games and it sent me back to back in the day when they still had the Toffee Club up & running and we went for the world cup. Their beers are solid and they always have a cider on tap. It's such a chill atmosphere every time we've been in. It really does have a nice European vibe inside. Normally they don't have food other than some funly flavored British crisps that are a delight, but for the Euros they've had available a couple of sandwich options that are heated in the little oven. I had the chicken, bacon, & cheddar ciabatta during the game yesterday and for a quick sandwich, it was really delicious. The Hawthorne asylum carts are a block away and you can bring in outside food also. But man, oh man, that sandwich hit the spot. Given all the inflation we've been seeing, I thought that $10 was a very fair price, especially since it was a heated sandwich and not just straight out of the fridge. I love this place; it is a gem. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Euros there and I'm looking forward to visiting their new space once they upgrade! Thank you, Away Days, for making the world a better place with the wonderful community that you've built.

Yelp
This is a nice smaller brewpub in the light industrial area of SE Portland just east of the Hawthorne Bridge. The pub area is very nice, small but bright and decorated with great care. The large garage-door opens for a nice inside-outside seating area, the bar is nice, service is friendly, and it has a comfortable, quiet, relaxed feel. Beer is great quality and they have some cask-conditioned ales as well. When we were there, they had a couple lighter ales similar to light British summer ales and they were very enjoyable.

Yelp
Cute spot with cask beer on tap! We got the Bermondsey Brown and Milkers Mild. Service was fast and personable.

Yelp
We had a dunkel and although it's not as dark as the ones we had in Germany, it was good! They allowed our dog inside and we're glad since it was hot! Service was friendly. It's a small brewery, but it's nice and nicely decorated and modern. Not much besides just good beer and good company!

Yelp
Another great Portland brewery! This city has such a great craft beer scene that it's always super exciting for me to take a trip down here to try out breweries I haven't paid a visit to before and go to beloved ones. This brewery I got something on the lighter side for beer as that was what mainly was compromised of when trying having craft beer down here on my most recent trip. I got their Helles Lager which I really enjoyed. I love lagers and the Helles style is always something that I enjoy drinking. This brewery's version was no exception. It was extremely refreshing and had a good biscuity and nutty flavor to it. It was a very well tasting beer to kick back and relax with. There looked like other promising beer options on tap as well but I didn't get any more as I was trying out several different breweries. Away Days was a very fine stop and if you can swing by and try one of them!

Yelp
A hidden gem! Really loved the beers on tap and owner was extremely friendly. We chatted with him for a bit as out of town visitors and he wrote out a list of his favorite spots in the area, which was so generous. We loved some of his recs and I hope I'll be back in Portland soon to try more Away beers!! Hit up this beautiful spot soon if you can! Very clean and friendly spot.

Yelp
Away Days Brewing is a super cute spot. It's small but has seating available both inside and out. I started off with a flight (you choose four) followed by a pint and my husband had two pints. The Home & Away IPA was my favorite, I was sad that they were out of cans to take home. This was my favorite brewery visit while in Oregon. Cheers!

Melissa D.

Yelp
Husband liked two of the four beers. It's a cute, tiny little place and the staff are cool. We were hoping for some great beers. The IPA was really good but the others were just ok.

Yelp
If you think you're going to like it, you're going to love it. Two cask ales, same yummy grub as next door, friendly and competent service (getting both is sometimes challenging in PDX), awesome vibes, and did I mention two cask ales? Going to finish up this review and look for houses for sale on this block.

Yelp
Ok....closer to 4.75 stars. Taking a little off because of where the outside seating is, right next to the road. So car fumes were an issue for us last night. The service was awesome!!! Very quick and the gal was very friendly as well. Got a flight of beer to start with, so I could decide what beer I wanted to get a pint of later. I went with the Vienna lager. All the beers that they had on tap were just what they were supposed to be. The food was pretty good but nothing really special. My wife and friends were kind of bummed about the fish and chips being only one piece of fish. But they still enjoyed it nonetheless. I had a scotch egg and a burger. I thought the fries (chips) were a little too well done. They're only open until 8 PM currently but they may be extending their hours once there's more daylight in the evening. They are owned by the place nextdoor so you can continue to imbibe until 10 PM. It's also dog friendly as well so that's a plus.

Yelp
We stopped in for a little lunch. It's right next to the Toffee Club and same owner. Bright, fun, and whimsical atmosphere. It was not at all busy for a Sunday afternoon. We got a taster tray with the British Rail Summer Ale, Crossbar Radler, Away Days IPA, and Cleats Up IPA. All very tasty! Wow they did a great job capturing the season in these beers. We all ordered pints after the tasting but it was hard to choose! The Spanish chorizo sandwich was delicious. Loved the pickles and pasta salad it came with. The potato chips were nice too, just wish we had a little more of those. The house marinated olives are a must order. They pair well with everything. Great service! We shall return!

Yelp
Been coming here since they opened Labor Day weekend. Super friendly owners, and a good variety of beer that are a little different than those from a lot of the other breweries. Hoppy lager, pale ales, and yes, some IPAs along with bitters, milds, and other styles. Indoor and outdoor seating, and just a chill place to raise a few pints. I always enjoy it here. No longer serving food but outside food is welcome.

Yelp
Nice brewery. I had the British ale which was a nice beer and I sampled the Pilsner, also god. They have a cute inside area as well as some outdoor seating when it's nice out. Overall, it was a good stop with good beers.

Yelp
What a fun spot! Really friendly and a very clear identity. Very accommodating to set us up at a barrel until a table opened up outside. With beers on the lighter side, this is a great starting point for any SE beer afternoon.

Yelp
Watched the USA World Cup matchup with Holland and had a great time! Great oatmeal stout for breakfast. Great football decor with a mix of new and old. Even with a packed house still had great service.

Yelp
WOW! Cask ales! Say no more. A real rarity where I live (Bay Area). Everyone needs to brew 100 different variations of an IPA, I guess. Boring! The ESB and Bitter were both excellent, as was the Pale Ale. The fish n chips were delicious and fresh tasting, but a little pricey for the portion of fish. The staffperson was friendly and the pours were perfect. I look forward to returning.

Yelp
Love beer? Oh my goodness, come here! I just had the most astonishing cask ale, and actually a pretty good burger, too. The service is wonderful and the people are really knowleadgeable about beer. And it is a great atmosphere. I imagine it would be great on a warm evening with the garage-door style walls opened up to this great Portland-y area. Nice.

Yelp
Friendly spot after a long work day without having to walk far before hopping on the bus to commute home. Didn't have a chance to try the food, but the beer was delish.
